Welcome From Tal-Ko Racing
Dear Formula TKM Driver
On behalf of Tal-Ko Racing, Maxxis Tyres and the Hunts Kart Racing Club we have
pleasure in welcoming you to the 2013 Maxxis Kimbolton TKM Festival which once again
features our unique format to give you competitive racing, great value for money and a
weekend to remember.
2
Once again we have full TV coverage for the event being beamed to 200m homes across
the world. And there will be talent scouts looking out for more future stars from within
the class to follow in the wheel-tracks of successful race car drivers like Oliver Jarvis, Tom
Onslow-Cole, Jeff Smith and Nathan Freke, all past competitors at the Festival. And let’s
not forget F1 star Jenson Button.
On top of that there will be a display of historic karts with chassis and/or engine
supplied by Tal-Ko over its 50+ years history.
The effort put in by everyone at Hunts Kart Club deserves a very big thank you from all of
us as does the financial boost coming from Maxxis Tyres, our long time suppliers to the
TKM classes.
Whether novice or expert we hope you thoroughly enjoy your weekend.

Tal-Ko Racing History Comes to Festival
TKM owner and manufacturer, Tal-Ko Racing, has a long history within the karting world and numerous
UK and International championship titles to its credit. And this weekend historic Tal-Ko powered and built
karts will turn back the clock.
Originally started in 1958 by Bernie Turney, the company has a fine reputation as an importer of quality
karts and engines, while more recently being the only UK manufacturer of kart racing engines sold under
the TKM brand name for 2 & 4 stroke classes.
Over the years literally thousands of drivers have relied and won on TKM equipment including F1 driver
David Coulthard and World Champion Jenson Button, who was a Junior S1 title-holder in the TKM 2-stroke
class. Other star drivers like Anthony Davidson, Tom Onslow-Cole, Colin Turkington, Gary Paffett, Oliver
Turvey and Nathan Freke, have more recently graduated from the Formula TKM classes and some of
whom raced at this event.
Since the death of his father in 1982, the company has been run by Alan Turney, himself a former top
British kart racer and once team-mate to Nigel Mansell in the UK squad. Alan is an engine expert whose
skills have fine tuned engines winning World Championship and British Grand Prix titles.
The TKM BT82 engine used for the Formula TKM 2-stroke classes derived its name from Bernie Turney as
a memorial – BT (Bernie Turney) and 82 – the year he died. The engine was first used in the USA where it
become the dominant force within their categories and took their World Endurance titles.
It was introduced into this country first of all under the title of the 100UK class in 1989. Later the class
became known as Formula TKM.
The TKM K4S 4-stroke engine was introduced in 2000 and was the world’s first 4-stroke engine designed
and developed specifically for kart racing. It is used as far away as Canada and Japan.
On track this weekend will be a display of historic karts making use of Tal-Ko made engines including
early TKM models and before that Tal-Ko’s Hewland Arrow engines. The display comes at a time when
there is growing interest in racing historic karts and when Tal-Ko are actively supporting the movement
with availability of spares for older engines.
Meanwhile the company is also just preparing to launch a new engine onto the world market aimed at
giving Cadet age drivers a stepping stone onto greater performance. So 54 years on from its creation TalKo remains a significant player in karting with its engines used in many markets around the world, and in
the UK with its commitment to providing the best value racing available through Formula TKM.

Historic Karts Add a Touch of Nostalgia
to Kimbolton’s Maxxis TKM Festival
Owners of historic karts are being invited to join in one of the UK’s top karting events - the Maxxis
TKM Festival which celebrates its 15th year at Kimbolton in August.
With historic karts becoming more popular by the year and with both Tal-Ko and Kimbolton being
trail-blazers in karting with histories going back to its birth more than 50 years ago, it is a perfect
addition to this special celebration of TKM karting.
Any kart using a TKM or Hewland Arrow engine will be eligible to take part in what will be an
20 on-track demonstration on Sunday, August 11. Also included Tal-Ko supplied karts which includes
the original Get Kart and the legendary Voo Doo kart both of which were manufactured by Tal-Ko
in the late fifties and sixties.
Tal-Ko boss Alan Turney said: “This is great news. We started making TKM engines back in 1978
and it will be great to see some of the old models out on the circuit where they used to be raced
many years ago.
“Over the past year or so interest in historic karts has been accelerating rapidly and we have
been pleased to help those with older equipment by supplying spares which we still have on our
shelves.”
The organisers are also hoping to encourage along drivers who used to race at the Kimbolton
circuit over its 54 year history for a special reunion.
As usual the TKM Festival will be covered for Motors TV and the historics will be expected to
appear as part of that adding a touch of nostalgia to the highly competitive nature of the annual
event.
Says Martin Chesterman, Chairman of the Hunts Kart Club which runs Kimbolton: “This circuit has
such a long history stretching back to the very earliest days of karting so it will be great to bring
some old names and equipment back to the track.”

24
Howdoesitwork
Thursday site opens at 9.00am to allow teams to set up for the race weekend.
Some pitbay spaces will be available for the race weekend at £20 per bay, call 01480 212210 for
availability.
Friday will be sessioned testing all day starting at 10am. Only competitors that have entered the
Festival are permitted to practice.
Saturday will start with official practice and then move onto timed qualifying with the order of
times used to set the grid positions for all heats. No weather problems because the positions/
times will be based on order within your qualifying heat.
On Sunday there will be a last heat with your results used to determine your grid position for the
pre-final. There will be at least three heats for all classes – in some categories there may be more
depending on numbers.
• In the large classes, after the heats, the top 34 from heats go into the Elite pre-final. The next

• If necessary there will be B finals and C finals with the top 4 going through each time.

Two&FourStroke
Drivers may compete in 2 and 4 stroke categories, though we cannot make any guarantees
over the gap between the races. You cannot compete in more than one 2 or 4 stroke class. The
categories are Junior 2 and 4 stroke, Senior 2 and 4 stroke. Dependent on numbers 2 and 4
strokes may race together for separate trophies.
Clubman
This class will run in line with the Clubman class being run at Shenington and Rissington with a
couple of minor changes which are underlined. This means:
• Kart chassis must not have been designed for use of a torsion bar. If using old style sidebars with
latest sidepods the kart must be of TKM homologated design and carry a TKM sequential plate.
• Must use 30mm rear axle.
• TAG engines not permitted.
• Direct-drive or clutch may be used.
• No data logging, but rev-counter which records lap times may be used.
• CNC cylinders not permitted.
• Number plate white with black numbers
• Sprocket is free
• Competitors may use new control slick tyres.
Dependent on numbers we hope to run the Clubman classes separately to the Extremes for heats
and finals. At minimum we plan to run the finals separate.
Tyres–AllClassesExceptClubman
All competitors will be required to use new Maxxis slick tyres which must be ordered and paid for
with Tal-Ko Racing. These tyres will be sold to you at a discounted price of £132 inc VAT.
The control tyres will be issued and marked in parc ferme. Competitors must mount their own
tyres on wheels within parc ferme and the tyres will be stored there at all times apart from
when the kart is on the track until the end of the meeting or when a driver retires. A tyre spike
is provided for a refundable £5 fee. You will be limited to just one set of dry tyres for the event.
In the case of a puncture you may replace a tyre, but only if it is approved by a scrutineer within
parc ferme. A compressor and inflation points will be available to all drivers within parc ferme.
Note an official tyre sniffer will also be in use.
Note that you do not need to use your control tyres until timed qualifying, though you may if you
wish use them for official practice on Saturday morning. They will be in parc ferme for collection
and removal.

during practising or racing. On testing day, once scrutineering has been completed, no further testing is permitted for that
day. All karts must be race prepared before being taken for scrutineering. If race numbers are required to be changed by a
competitor, written instruction must be given and numbers changed before next race and confirmed by a scrutineer. All karts
and engines must conform to the information appearing on scrutineering cards, which must be signed by the driver (unless
the driver is under 18, then the scrutineering card must be signed by the parent or guardian responsible for the driver) and

remain in parc ferme at all times other than when the kart is taking part. Any removal of tyres outside of this may result
in exclusion. If the Clerk of the Course or Chief Scrutineer suspects that kart tyre performance has been enhanced, then the
club has the authority to ask for another set of tyres to be used at the competitors’ expense. Under no circumstances may
tyres be left at the circuit
Drivers must place their karts on the dummy grid one full race before their next event and remain with their kart until their
race starts. The dummy grid will be closed after the preceding race has left the grid and competitors not in position at this
time will be placed on the back of the grid.

RaceTimetable
We plan everyone to have two heats on Saturday and one on Sunday but this is subject to alteration if need arises.
Timed Qualifying
We will again be using the international system of timed qualifying to set grid positions for all heats. Where entries
are larger than one grid we will ensure fairness by using the 101% rule to cover any change of weather conditions
between sessions. Karts will be placed in qualifying sessions by random picking. During the course of the heats every
driver will race against every other within the class. Please study your grid positions carefully.
Note that during qualifying you do not have to go on track until you are ready within the allotted time. However once
you have gone out onto the track you are not permitted to come back in and go out again.
Note that during qualifying the scales can only be used by those drivers on the track.
RaceFormat
30
In both of the TKM 2-stroke classes the heats will be split into groups. At the conclusion of qualifying and heats
the classes will be split with the top section going straight through into the Elite final (34 karts maximum). The
remainder will go into the A & B Festival finals as required. Top four will move up from B final to the A. There will
be no drivers moving forward from the Festival final to the Elite.
Parking
In order to accommodate everyone it is vital that competitors and their teams abide by a sensible rule of conduct.

vans, trailers etc may be brought into the paddock. Other private cars must be parked in the additional parking areas

vehicles, sponsors, TV crews, etc. If you do not comply with parking requirements you will not be racing!
Access/Security

Tyres
Drivers in the main Junior and Senior classes must use control slick tyres supplied by the organisers for dry use.
Drivers will only use one set of dry tyres throughout all timed qualifying and racing. You do not have to use control
tyres for the Saturday and Sunday official practice sessions but you may if you wish. When collecting control tyres
during the race weekend you must present your card to the Tyre Bay Scrutineer before the tyres are handed over.
You must bring with you to the Tyre Bay area in the assembly area your wheel rims and suitable equipment to
mount the tyres. Airlines are available. Once mounted the tyres must remain within assembly area /Parc Ferme all
weekend apart from when fitted to your kart to race. Bring with you suitable tools to fit and remove wheels before
and after each race.
Failure to return the registered slick tyres to Parc Ferme after a race will result in an exclusion from the meeting. Be
careful especially if you have a breakdown with the kart on the circuit. You must return to Park Ferme to remove
the wheels and tyres.
In case of a puncture or damage, only allowed 1 Front 1 Rear, as required, which will be replaced at the
confirmation of the Chief Scrutineer
Wet tyres will not be marked and are not limited in number. Tyre spikes are available at £5 per spike refundable.
ReplacementTyres
For all categories, in the case of a puncture or other damage, the driver must seek the permission of the Chief
Scrutineer and Clerk of the Course for a replacement tyre.
Clubman Tyres
Clubman entered karts may use either new tyres ordered at special price through the event or pre-used tyres.
Clubman tyres will not be held in parc ferme but they will be marked and restricted to one set for the meeting
subject to replacement if damaged.
Tyre Sniffer
An MSA approved ‘tyre sniffer’ will be in use. The driver of any kart found to have tyres showing an abnormal level of
chemical content at least 50 per cent higher than average readings from other competitors will be deemed in breach
of MSA rule U16.9.2 and banned from taking part in any further races during the weekend.
Fuel
You may use S1 type control fuel if you wish provided that it meets all other relevant regulations. Control fuel will
not be used for any class.
Engine Seals
Both engines for the 2-stroke classes must be sealed at scrutineering using the special TKM sealing nuts. Sealing
nuts will be available at a special cost of £5 each for any driver not owning them. They will be useable for all future
Formula TKM racing.
Kart & Driver Livery
You will be required to carry mandatory livery on your kart, race suit and helmet. The stickers for this will be handed
out at signing on and must be in place at all times during official practice and racing. Damaged stickers must be
replaced and will be available. Any livery in conflict with Maxxis Tyres or Formula TKM must be removed or covered.
No cigarette advertising is permitted. Failure to carry the required branding can result in exclusion from the meeting.
RaceSuit
The TKM and Maxxis cloth badges must be sewn onto the front upper chest area of your race suit and attached the
right way up and in a horizontal position.

Engineering Group Support
If you have read are previous adverts, you’ll know we went to F1’s fastest team,
Red Bull for a tour but this time we went to one of the world’s leading companies
in synthetic resins and polymers, Scott Bader. We learnt the prestigious art of
applying a Gelcoat to a plastic mould and laminating Fibre Glass, the team
thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The only question we’re thinking is: where next?
We would like to thank our sponsors Hunts Kart Racing Club, Gerratts Brushes,
Scott Bader, Schwalbe, Kimbolton Fireworks, Kimbolton School Society, Kimbolton
School CCF and Robinson Coaches. This has enabled us to gather up £1770 but
with more money, not only would the rear of the kart be carbon fibre, the whole
thing would be, giving us the edge!
