Cowichan’s Got Arts & Culture
EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
I
mmerse yourself in local artisans’
creativity during a self-guided studio
tour such as the Ladysmith Artists’
Garden Tour (on until Sept. 14). Or visit
the Cowichan Valley Artisans and
Visions Art Studios year ‘round. Meet
each artisan in their own inspirational
environment, displaying their work and
demonstrating techniques. In August,
Ladysmith’s Arts on the Ave is a visual
feast of art.
Two lavender festivals feature local arts.
Mingle with an eclectic group of painters,
quilters and photographers at the
Lavender and Arts Festival on July 19.
Take in the wine garden, live music and
artisans at Lavenderfest at Damali Farm
July 26.
Live, outdoor music is in the air nearly
every day and in every community. From
Concerts in the Park in Ladysmith and
Chemainus to large scale festivals
including the Islands Folk Fest and
Sunfest – feet will be tapping all summer
long. Add high calibre performances like
Chemainus Jazz Festival, Bluegrass
Festival and Accordion Days, plus
ArtBeat and Duncan’s ‘39 Days of July’
featuring performances all day long,
everyday – Cowichan’s communities come
alive with interactive art, dancing and
music.
The region’s six farm markets,
including one of the Island’s largest
located in Duncan, are another way to
soak up home-grown arts and culture, and
to find that one-of-a-kind gift or item to
grace your home. For a truly unique
experience, head to Teafarm for a tea
tasting from original pots and cups
created by famous ceramist, Margit
Nellemann (and yes, Teafarm does grow
tea!).
Eclectic, funky, cool, traditional,
classic – whatever your style, however
you define art – Cowichan has it in
abundance.
