DON SOMMER AMERICAN ARROW CORPORATION © 2008 American Arrow CUSTOM ACCESSORIES FOR CLASSIC ERA MOTORCARS TROPHIES, AWARDS & AUTOMOBILIA year of 2009 105 Kinross Clawson, Michigan 48017 Phone (248) 435-6115 or (248) 435-2916 Fax # (248) 435-4670 E-mail: dsommer@greatid.com/Website: www.donsommer.com Marilyn Sommer 1935-2008 Things are different for me, my wife Marilyn died peacefully in her sleep on June 24, she was 73 years old. We met in college and had been married 52 years. She was my inspiration when I started making car parts in my basement in 1966 and became the office manager and bookkeeper for our company American Arrow. Many of you knew her from Hershey and the many other events we attended. My family and I would like to thank you for all your prayers, cards, flowers, donations and condolences. She is missed very much. PRICES ARE EFFECTIVE October 1, 2008 This brochure presents a summary of some of the quality products we currently manufacture. It is hard to believe that it has been over 30 years since our first catalog came out in August of 1971. It’s been a pleasure meeting many of you and providing the parts and accessories that make your classic era cars valuable. I plan to continue as long as I can and my son Dan will continue as long as he can make a living doing it. He has worked here since high school. A natural spin-off of our experience in lost wax castings has been our fine art sculptures and awards which we provide for events throughout the country. Cars throughout the world use our custom motor car accessories. Our accessories represent a sound investment that enhances the beauty and increases the value of your car. You will find that in many cases, our accessories are a less expensive investment than restoring original parts when you consider the cost of labor, rebuilding and replating. Remember, WE USE NO POT METAL, so our accessories are stronger and last longer. I am a registered professional engineer by trade. I have collected cars all my life and my dad bought me my first antique car over 60 years ago (when I was 9 years old) and I still have it. My collection includes a 1930 Packard Phaeton, a Brass Model T Ford and a number of 50’s Convertibles. I have learned a great deal about the antique car hobby over the past 30 years. There are all types of people; some want ridiculously high quality while others will take anything as long as it is cheap. Somewhere in between is where most of you are and you are the ones I like to make parts for. PAYMENT – Advance payment in U.S. dollars or equivalent, company or personal checks are accepted along with Mastercard, Visa or C.O.D. Cash only. Prices in this catalog are generally effective for one year, however, prices are subject to change and parts may be discontinued without notice. Michigan residents add 6% sales tax. Make checks payable to American Arrow Corporation. Since most of our items are custom made, a reasonable deposit enters your order at the prevailing price at the time the order is received. Deposits on custom items may be forfeited if payments are not received within 30 days of request. This gives you the benefit of a firm fixed price and enables me to plan my production. Orders are accepted without a deposit, however, they will be priced at the prevailing price at time of shipment. C.O.D. orders are Cashiers Check or Money Order only. Personal checks are accepted and parts are shipped after they are cleared. You pay shipping and C.O.D. charges on C.O.D. orders. Prices in this catalog do not include shipping charges. LIMITED WARRANTY – Standard products may be returned within 10 days for a refund. No allowances made for shipping or C.O.D. charges. Returned parts will not be accepted via C.O.D. We will not accept returned parts at Swap meets. Refunds are by check only, unless the parts were charged, in which case a credit would be issued to Mastercard or Visa. No allowances made for secondar y operations you might perform on parts before return. This applies especially to wheel parts. Check your parts before chroming and assembly. Do not keep a part over the guarantee period and expect me to take them back! Any work in progress on special projects that are cancelled must be cancelled in writing and you will be charged for all work incurred up to that date. TELEPHONE CALLS — You can generally reach us from 7:00 AM until 5:30 PM Eastern time Monday thru Friday. I am also here many evenings and on weekends. Our Fax number is (248) 435-4670. You are encouraged to visit our website www.donsommer.com ORDERING INSTRUCTION — Be sure to include a street address so I can ship by UPS. Checks payable to American Arrow Corp. Be sure to include shipping charges as shown above. DELIVERY — I have found that the only way to maintain top quality antique and classic car parts is to remain a small operation. This sometimes results in delays. We Make No Deliver y Guarantees but do the best we can, generally working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Most mascots are stocked for immediate delivery. Pilot Rays delivery runs two to six weeks. Wind Wings and Tonneau windshields take longer. Sportlights currently take one to two months and wheels take two to six months. I’ll try and help you make show dates whenever I can. It pays to call me if you have specific delivery requirements. Items can be shipped Air Freight (shipping charges collect). I won’t sacrifice quality for fast delivery. If you are the impatient type then I would rather have you purchase elsewhere. SWAP MEETS — You are encouraged to visit our booth at Hershey GCK 46-51. Be sure of the material before you buy. It is false economy to buy an inexpensive mascot from zinc or similar metal it will break or pit after a short period of time. There are no short cuts to making quality mascots. The only durable ones are from brass or stainless steel. (Silver or gold would also work.) These metals melt at 2000° For higher and can be cast by sand casting or lost wax. Sand castings are suitable for simple parts with little detail and no reverse draft. Lost wax casting is the only way to capture the beauty and detail of your radiator mascot. The auto companies originally used zinc because it was inexpensive, copies well and lends itself to mass production. They have no concern over durability except for the few short years of the life of a normal car. You can currently buy some mascots in zinc from your local hot rod shop for under $10. I could cast them in the same molds I cast my wax patterns and sell them at a ridiculously low price, but I won’t. I only make quality parts. A car worth restoring is worth a good mascot. My lost wax castings in stainless steel are miniature sculptures. They are worked by hand both in the wax form and after casting. Because of all this hand work, you can expect slight differences between mascots. This is one of the reasons they are unique and they are already becoming collectors items. To make these mascots, a mold is made using an original as a master. Wax patterns are then made from the mold. These waxes are then mounted on a casting tree and coated with ceramic. One wax is required for each mascot. The wax is melted out and stainless steel is poured in at 2800° F - 3000° F. This process is expensive, but copies detail very well. With this process, shrinkage is .030” per inch. This means that a 1” thick mascot would be .970” when cast and a 3” long piece would be 2.910”. This is not noticeable on a mascot. Caps and tight tolerance parts are machined after casting to insure proper fit. (Originally, a hand-made over-sized pattern was used; the cost of which would be prohibitive now.) The stainless steel castings are machined, polished and flash chrome plated. (Polished stainless looks much like sterling silver; the flash chrome gives it a blue lustre.) A small loss in detail occurs (about 5%) during polishing, however, this is a small penalty to pay for the superior strength and aging properties of stainless steel. They are offered on an unconditional 10-day money-back guarantee. Some of you might wonder why “stainless steel” is used and not brass. I have found that stainless gives more consistent detail despite the fact that it is harder to work. In the years to come, my stainless steel mascots will become collectors items just as Laliques are today. Mascots make an interesting collectable and prices have escalated sharply in recent years. The mascot era began, with some notable exceptions, in the midtwenties when motometers replaced the dash mounted temperature indicators. The first mascots were on radiator caps and after about 10 years the radiator filler was put under the hood and mascots became hood ornaments. The hood ornament era lasted about 20 years, ending in the 56-58 period. The plain cap over the radiator filler wasn’t particularly attractive so some enterprising designer developed a statue-like figure to adorn the cap. Not only 1947 PACKARD 34 FORD DOG 1937-40 PACKARD 34-38 LINCOLN SHIPPING CHARGES EXTRA - SEE INSIDE FRONT COVER did it enhance the appearance but also became a profitable accessory. Mascots became some of the most fascinating sculptures of the “Art Deco” era. They came as dogs, birds, lions, elephants, naked ladies, clothed ladies, airplanes and an unlimited variety of subjects. I became interested in collecting mascots in the late 60’s but wasn’t smart enough to collect the really great European ornaments and rare Laliques. I remember once buying a collection of 11 Laliques for $1800 and reselling them for $2300 because I couldn’t afford them. Beginning with the winter of 1963 issue, the “Classic Car Magazine” a series of articles by “Doc” Mundhenk on mascots appeared using examples from the great Al Thurn collection (now at Merle Norman). This generated considerable interest and the Williams book was also a great help. When I started collecting I would see a great number of good prewar mascots at every flea market and now you see few. I remember going on vacation to northern Michigan and stopping at junk yards and spending much of the afternoon taking off hood ornaments until my wife would get angry waiting in the car. I believe the fellow used to charge a sum of $3.00 for a bucket full of mascots. In all, I must have at least 3000 original ornaments and mascots. Mascot collecting has been fun, and led to some interesting experiences. I once put up a display at the Greenfield Village old car festival. They let me put up a “Wanted mascots” sign. A fellow came up and said Uncle Bill had died and left quite a few ornaments and would I be interested. Uncle Bill apparently worked at a mascot factory and had a big lunch bucket as I got several hundred new unmachined and unchromed ornaments, including five Austin Bantam Roosters and a dozen or so ’34 Plymouth ships from him. The two great U.S. mascot makers were Stant of Connersville, Indiana and Ternsdedt Division of GM. Years ago I visited Stant and the Chief Designer said that the Whippet Dog was the best first mascot they made. He told interesting stories about using real live quail for models, and showed me drawings for a beautiful ’35 Ford ornament where the dog was integral with the hood piece. Because some mascots are so beautiful, I decided to make them oversize as sculpture. I used about a two times scale which is a nice size for your desk or table and also a great trophy. They are made from patinaed bronze or polished stainless steel. Stainless steel is a sculpture medium which few can successfully do, and if polished properly is absolutely beautiful. For many of you, my mascots mounted on marble or my oversize mascots make an attractive decoration for your office or den. My ornaments are art quality statues. Some of you have asked me to pick the 15 most beautiful mascots. I realize that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but my personal choices of American mascots would be: Big Willy’s Knight; Wills St. Clair wings up goose; Pierce Arrow bare headed archer; 32-37 Packard Goddess (Doughnut chasser); 32-37 Packard Cormorant; 29 Packard Sliding Boy (Adonis); 34 Ford Dog; Ford Quail; Chrysler Gazelle & cap; 30-32 Cadillac Goddess; Cadillac Herald; 30-32 Buick Mercury; 31-34 Auburn Man; 27 Chevy Spirit of St. Louis Plane; and Hudson Man. The mascots we currently offer are listed in this catalog. Not all of them are in stock at all times. 1932-37 PACKARD 29 PACKARD 29-32 CADY GODDESS -1 - 26-29 CADY HERALD PIERCE ARROW FRANKLIN HISPANO SUIZA Catalog Pages 2008 10/27/08 30-32 BUICK GODDESS 4:22 PM Page 2 30-32 BUICK MERCURY 1920-32 Alvis Hare & Cap . . . . . . . $600.00 1930-33 Alvis Eagle. . . . . . . . . . . . 485.00 Apperson Rabbit . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 255.00 Austin Bantam Rooster . . . . . . . . . 500.00 Bugatti Elephant . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 590.00 1929 Auburn Cap. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 410.00 1931-34 Auburn Man. . . . . . . . . . . 635.00 1936 Auburn Man & base . . . . . . . 635.00 1936 Auburn Man only. . . . . . . . . . 435.00 1936 Auburn Base only . . . . . . . . . 230.00 1936 Auburn Side Trim . . . . . . . . . 600.00 pr. Rene Lalique was a master craftsman in jewelry and glass. In 1932 his catalog showed about thirty mascots. they are signed “R. Lalique” and “France” usually cast in the glass although it is sometimes engraved in script on the base. Some of these early Laliques are very valuable, and some of you no doubt saw prices of $12,000 or more being asked for “Victoire” (spirit of the wind) at Hershey. Rene died in 1945 and all Laliques after that are signed “Lalique France.” The three examples shown below are Laliques in current manufacture that are suitable for radiator mascots. There is also a Swallow available which can be used with a special base to mount on a classic era motorcar. We offer a lighted adapter which mounts to a variety of classic era radiator caps. The adapters are made in plated brass. Our adapter which utilizes AAA batteries with a small switch protruding from the side. (The unit has to be disassembled to change the batteries.) The lighted Laliques with adapters are especially attractive and fit well on Duesenbergs, Packards, and Mercedes. Some applications work better if you purchase a new stainless cap along with the Lalique and adapter. We can rebuild these wheels with new steel rims and in many cases can supply complete new wheels. Our rim blanks are polished to a mirror like finish before they are dimpled and that’s the way to get a strong beautiful wheel for your classic. Rims and hubs are triple plated steel and spokes and nipples are made from stainless steel. We have tooling for snap ring style rims in 17-18-19-20-21-23 and 25” sizes and Firestone style rim in 27”. We also make 16 x 4, 17 x 4 and 18 x 4 conventional drop center rims and 17 x 4, 18 x 4 and 22 x 4 double beaded drop center rims. Our rims are correct for most of the classic era cars, Auburn, Cord, Cadillac, Duesenberg, Chrysler, Rolls Royce and Mercedes to name a few. We can rebuild most Packard Wire Wheels from 1925-1936 and can make complete new wheels for Packard’s of the era, including the 1933-36 Packard Eight. Most 1933-36 Packard Eight’s came from the Packard Factory with welded spoke wheels however some special order cars came with chromed wheels with take apart spokes and nipples. These wheels are similar to the 1932 900 wheels except they have a 4” rim instead of a 3 5/8” rim. Classic era Lincolns used chromed wheels on some of their show cars. These wheels used spokes with removable nipples. We are proud to offer these wheels in 18” for 32-34 KA & KB and 17” for the 1935-39 Lincolns. Rims are made on special order. Delivery can take two months to a year or more depending on our workload. We’ll work with you whenever possible to insure that you get your wheels when you need them. A 1/3 deposit gets your order started. By using the Tonneau Windshield in conjunction with a Tonneau Cover, you can enjoy the comfort of a dual cowl without the inconvenience of the lid. We make a copy of the famous J & H tonneau shield. It fastens to the back of the front seat and is also supported by floor legs. It is operated by sliding backward and forward on a pair of straight arms. It can be folded down out of the way when not in use. They are made from triple plated steel. It comes complete with safety glass and all the hardware necessary for installation. Our Tonneau Windshield is custom made and can be sized for almost any installation. Special bracketry is available for mounting on the open Fords. We have developed a working tonneau windshield from the “Classic-era” for the 1961-67 Lincoln Convertible. It mounts with special brackets to the “B” pillar and to the floor. It slides back to the passengers on short arms and folds when not in use. Send SAE for a drawing to list installation dimensions if you are unsure of size. They mount above the bumper and turn with the wheels. They add that finishing touch to your quality restoration. They can be identified by their long “skinny” metal handle. They were approved accessories for Cadillac and Duesenberg. A very complicated light that would not be practical to reproduce. We now offer new heads for these lights since the 31 Cadillac style (matches headlight) and the regular shell that was used on Duesenberg. For those of you who must have them we have restored originals from time to time but they’re expensive. The most practical approach is to use our Sportlight bottoms with the Lorraine head. PACKARD HALL SPOTLIGHTS We offer an exact reproduction of the Packard Hall Spotlight in 2 styles. The style with the switch out the rear of the knob for 1932 and earlier Packards, and the style with a toggle switch in the shell for the later cars. They come with the proper mounting bracket. I have always been interested in western art. I realized how beautiful some of the pieces were and as we developed the classic era mascots in stainless steel through the lost wax process, it was natural to branch into sculpture. Stainless steel is a medium that few do successfully and we have become proficient in stainless awards and sculptures. Listed below are some of the stainless and bronze sculptures I make. I grew up on a farm near Davison, Michigan and got my first car when I was 9 years old; a 1915 Ford Model T (which I still have), and have been interested in vintage cars ever since. I graduated from Michigan State University in 1955 as a Mechanical Engineer. Drafted 5 days out of college, I was assigned to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville, Alabama where I worked for the oldest engineer in the Von Braun Missile Team for 2 years and then spent about 20 years in the Aerospace industry. I started making vintage car parts in my basement about 1966 and since 1972 have worked at it full time. We have produced a wonderful series of oversized sculptures from some of the most beautiful classic era radiator mascots. These sculptures are made from lost wax castings and range from 10” to 20” high and weigh approximately 15 pounds. Each piece is signed and serialized and is available in patinaed bronze or polished stainless steel mounted on a marble and wood base. $2,750.00 each or buy the entire collection at a special price. Available in up to 5 colors, they can be made with individual names or all alike. These collector’s license plates are handcrafted in the USA from fired porcelain. This old world finishing process consists of fusing finely ground glass crystals to 18 gage steel fired at 1470 degrees. The resulting images are permanent to ensure lasting beauty, thus creating a treasure to be passed on for generations.
