From the Vosges mountains to the Rhine, Northern Alsace
enjoys a great reputation.
At the crossroads of the German and Latin worlds, the region’s
historical heritage is lovingly nurtured and the European flag is
proudly flown.
In Northern Alsace, nature, the land and culture are all intricately
linked. Here, a strong identity founded on an art of living is solidly
preserved through festivals and traditions, including decorating
the houses, villages and towns with a bounty of flowers earning
Northern Alsace its top-ranking reputation in this field.
A gastronomy famous worldwide, a remarkably rich historical
heritage, a particularly warm welcome – Northern Alsace brings
you all the best of the region in the most beautiful setting.
To set off on a tour of discovery at your own pace, let your
inspiration be your guide – fantastic surprises await you on
every page you turn.
When nature is synonymous
with relaxation…
Northern Alsace offers you a broad spectrum of landscapes:
- the plain, bordered to the East by the Rhine, a mythical, majestic river
- the foothills decked with vineyards producing vintage wines
- the Vosges mountains, culminating at an altitude of 1,100 metres, with Mediaeval fortresses overlooking the green valleys…
In summer, you can choose from a myriad bathing places and aquatic centres to go for a refreshing swim, and in winter the
mountain peaks are an open invitation to go cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and rambling with snowshoes. With 6,500 km
of signposted trails and 1,150 km of trails reserved for mountain bikes, Northern Alsace is a genuine paradise for sports
and leisure activities.

through the woodlands – but
don’t worry, you won’t get lost

RIVER TOURISM
Along the Rhine, the river Ill around
Strasbourg, on the canals leading to the
Rhone or the Marne, via the impressive
boat lift at Arzviller… exploring Northern
Alsace by boat is quite simply amazing. It’s
an original way of discovering village life
and admiring landscapes usually only seen
by river boatmen.

At the crossroads of
tradition and good taste
With its long history of many cultural influences, Northern Alsace cultivates its traditions and loves the good life.
The wealth and diversity of its gastronomic delights, the charming flower-decked villages, popular festivals so important
to village life, and fascinating museums are all great opportunities to discover the living traditions of Alsace!
Gastronomy
You will quickly fall under the charm of Alsatian cuisine with its succulent specialities served in a friendly atmosphere… In this field, Alsace holds its head up high with starred
restaurant and countless tranquil country inns and “winstubs”. In short, a myriad of place to choose from to sample the emblematic dishes of Alsatian cuisine: sauerkraut,
Bäckeoffe, matelote, Flammekueche, and all sorts of typical dishes served in the “winstubs”, the forerunner of the wine bar. And don’t miss out on tasting Alsace wines which are
appellation d’origine contrôlée, when you visit the numerous wine cellars. And there are other specialities such as eau de vie, liqueurs and beer, for which Alsace ensures over
half the national production.
Excessive consumption of alcohol is dangerous for your health. Drink with moderation.

Half-timbered houses
The style of half-timbered houses varies according to whether they are found on the plain
or in the mountains and what the buildings are used for (breeding, farming or winegrowing). The criss-cross pattern of the beams have symbolic shapes. A diamond shape
symbolises fertility, a St. Andrew’s cross is for protection and multiplying (sometimes the
diamond and cross are superimposed), slanted posts evoke the silhouette of a man and
therefore virility. Inscriptions of Sun wheels and starry tulips with five or six branches
protect the house from lightning, fire, witches and other evils. On the half-timbering and
facades you can find sculpted figures and painted motifs. The steeply sloping roof (to
evacuate snow) is made up of «Biberschwanz», roof tiles shaped like beaver tails. Inside,
only the main room, the Stube, was heated as was the kitchen… Some experts claim that
rather than being symbolic, each part of the halftimbering has above all a specific role to
play in supporting the overall frame.

Alsatian costume
While the black headdress remains
symbolic of a certain image of Alsace,
the traditional costume is, in fact, very
varied (white sun-shaped headdresses
in Meistratzheim, headdresses with a
small bow worn well above the forehead in Hunspach and Seebach etc.).
In a number of villages, red skirts are
for Catholic costumes and green for
Protestants (and more rarely blue or
violet). Whereas the headdress is always
black for a young Protestant girl, it
can be plain red, embroidered with
flowers or tartan for a Young Catholic
girl. Generally speaking, the costume
depends on the woman’s status, religious
festivals and geographical location.
10
Festivals throughout the seasons
Many traditions stem from trying to find the meaning of life or protections rituals. Christian festivals are still important events in village life throughout the region.
But in Alsace, everything is a good excuse to have a good time throughout the four seasons of the year – harvest, grape-picking, patron saints’ days, craftwork, emptying the
attic, local produce etc… Download the brochure «Schedule of events Alsace» on www.tourisme67.com See page 19.
PAST AND PRESENT
TRADITIONS ALL YEAR
ROUND
«Messtis»
(from Messtag = day of the Mass) or Kilbe, are fete-days
for the patron saints and annual fairs usually held in the
Summer. Traditionally, they are held from Whitsun to the
Autumn. Among other customs, a greasy pole is erected
with sausages, hams, pretzels, bunches of vegetables
and sweetmeats hanging from it. The young village lads
compete against each other to try and grab them. These
messtis are now giving way to another type of festival
(flower-decorated cavalcades) and all sorts of other
summer events.
The Christmas cycle
begins with Advent, four Sundays before Christmas Day.
The Advent crown with its candles symbolises the coming
of the light. The candles are lit one by one every Sunday.
During this period, all sorts of Christmas biscuits are made
(«Wihnachtsbredle»). The Christmas tree tradition is
really a part of Alsace with the first one ever mentioned
being in 1521 in Sélestat! Originally, it was decorated with
red apples, wafers, paper roses, biscuits and candles. As to
offering presents, the Protestant movement in Strasbourg
transferred the event from St Nicholas’ Day to Christmas
Eve in 1570.
Easter to Whitsun
Easter traditions were initially references to acts of
purification with spring cleaning («Oschterputz»), and
a dish of green vegetables and herbs served on Maundy
Thursday («Gründunnerschda»). Nature being renewed
and coming back to life is associated with Easter Sunday.
The cake in the shape of an Easter lamb symbolises
the Risen Christ. The Easter rabbit and his eggs are a
celebration of the springtime and fertility. On 1st May, it
was traditional to plant decorated green shrubs («Maïe»)
as a promise of love and esteem, and to celebrate the May
Queens, young girls who were the messengers of Spring.
Whitsun was a time for rituals linked with the vitality of
Nature, personified by the Whitsun valets, hirsute figures
made out of straw and green plants.
Autumn and winter
After the grain harvests, October is the month of grapepicking. In the old days, as Winter crept in, the evening
gatherings would begin. Several families would gather
round the ceramic stove («Kachelofe») and various tasks
carried out – repairing tools, spinning hemp, cracking
walnuts and beechnuts… with all the generations
together, telling anecdotes and recounting legends.
Saint Martin’s Day marked the end of the economic year.
A procession with lanterns is still part of the customs
today in the Rhineland. In Alsace, beets – not pumpkins
- were carved out and lit. It is said that the light paved the
way for St. Nicholas’ donkey..
Carnival
marks the coming of Spring and the temporary

A rich heritage and
culture still very much alive
Influenced by many cultures, Northern Alsace bears witness to the historical role of the Rhine basin. You can
relive the era of the gallant knights by visiting the numerous castles. Travel through time and relive the legends
of the builders of the myriad churches, chapels and historical buildings. Let the excitement of these eras take
you away – not forgetting the countless museums catering for all tastes and the more conventional sites to
explore. Strasbourg, the 7th ranking town in France, listed as part of the world heritage by UNESCO, offers
you 2000 years of history, an exceptionally imposing, yet delicately carved Cathedral and many other exciting
places to visit. Strasbourg became the Capital of Europe in the wake of the second world war, and today is a
symbol of the reconciliation between nations.
Tourist routes
At your own pace, you can wend your way through the roads of Alsace and find delightful surprises at every turn. The most famous
is the Wine Route, but other itineraries are just as exciting. Download the tourist routes on www.tourisme67.com
ALSACE WINE
ROUTE
+ - 150 km
The Wine Route is a serpentine ribbon
which runs from along the eastern slopes
of the Vosges mountains, tranquilly unfolding along the mountain side, crossing
through sixty winegrowing towns and villages and around fifteen vintage vineyards
«A.O.C. Alsace Grand cru» in Northern
Alsace.
www.vinsalsace.com
RHINE ROUTE
+ - 140 km
The mythical River Rhine is a magnet for
many who come just to contemplate
the flowing currents. It enters Alsace just
downstream of Basel and leaves the region
at Lauterbourg. In the 8th and 9th centuries, boatmen were already sailing down
the Rhine to the North Sea to sell wine to
the English, Danes and Swedes. In former
times, the Rhine flooded the plain, but
at the end of the 19th century, extensive
works were undertaken to regulate the
course of the river.
BEYOND THE
FOREST TO THE
NORTHERN VOSGES
+ - 170 km
Beyond the forest of Haguenau lies a
region bordered to the East by the Rhine
and to the West by the Regional Nature
Park of the Northern Vosges. It is a land
of hills, dales and forests, the main tourist
attraction being the picturesque villages
and potters’ villages, spas, castles and the
Maginot Line.
FROM THE VOSGES
MOUNTAINS TO THE
RIED PLAIN
+ - 260 km
The middle Vosges culminate at an altitude
of between 900 and 1,100 metres. Easy to
access, the excellent road network means
you can reach the mountain meadows and
wooded heights via the mountain passes
or visit the deep valleys. In addition to
the more usual places to visit, this region
stretching out under the open skies offers
plenty of opportunities for sports and
leisure activities: walks, hikes, mountain
bike circuits, downhill skiing and crosscountry skiing etc.
NORTHERN VOSGES
– ALSACE BOSSUE
+ - 210 km
Along the roads of Pays de Hanau, the
Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges
and Alsace Bossue (the «Hunchback» of
Alsace), there is a succession of typical,
majestic farms, solid stone churches and
mansions, followed by the vastness of the
Vosges forest and finally a landscape and
architecture typical of Lorraine. What’s
more, sites bearing witness to the Jewish
heritage and the brewing heritage in Alsace
abound along this itinerary.

Religious heritage
Alsace is a land of great spirituality and has been for centuries past. Romanesque art was practised extensively over a long period of time and is characterised by some remarkable
monastic churches. Enhanced by the growth of the towns, the apotheosis of Gothic art is found in Strasbourg Cathedral. After the Thirty Years’ War, superb edifices were built such
as Ebersmunster, in flamboyant Baroque style.
In a number of villages, there are two churches, reflecting the presence of both Catholic and Protestant communities. Furthermore, the density of rural synagogues still present today
demonstrate how extensive the Jewish community has been since the Middle Ages. The Concordat regime specific to Alsace and Moselle has contributed to these three faiths being
so firmly rooted here. The French Law of 1905 introducing the separation of the Church and the State does not in fact concern the region, which was annexed to Germany at the time.
Today, Alsace remains the most multidenominational region of France.

Top-quality organs, in particular those

century (Saint Thomas in Strasbourg,

the 19th century (Roppenheim, Bischwiller,

resounds during the Sunday service and
