Deacon Vonnie will be a familiar face to many in our community, as St. George’s shared part of her diaconal formation process. She has since remained closely connected with St. George’s and the Greater Newburgh Area, in particular through her service and leadership in the area of hunger relief and feeding ministries. Chamber Music 3 Girls Friendly 3 PB Collection 3 Cabaret 4 Episcobuild 4 Culinary Recap 5 We are incredibly fortunate to welcome a deacon into the midst of our shared ministry. The list of parishes seeking a deacon in the Diocese of New York is very long, and the need for diaconal ministries is great, but unfortunately the supply of deacons comes nowhere close to the demand. We will be blessed in so many ways to have Deacon Vonnie with us. You will be hearing in future newsletters how the particular ministry of Deacon Vonnie will play out in our covenanted community, but for now, it is a time of thanksgiving and rejoicing that we will be welcoming her into our midst beginning on October 20th. I hope that you will plan to be present for worship that day, and that you will introduce yourself to the newest member of our ministry team! Join us once again downstairs for delectable food, raffle gifts, and lots of entertainment. We are always looking for additional help. Contact Pam Morrill for more information about how you can participate and support this wonderful evening in the life of our parish. Pam has many ideas to share, all that is required is your willingness to help out in whatever way you can with this main fundraiser of the fall. And for those with culinary skills—Lana Scott is once again coordinating the food and refreshments for the evening. If we spread the task across several people, a wonderful spread of food will be much more manageable: Popular items from the past have included: mini quiche, mini onion tarts, shrimp cocktail, mini burgers, egg rolls, salmon tartar, meatballs, empanadas, marinated olives and relish tray- pickles, carrots and celery sticks, spinach dip w/tortilla chips, crab cakes, cheese platter, calamari, sautéed beef tips, hummus w/pita bread, quesadilla, escargot, BBQ chicken strips, gourmet salad, and croissants. And for dessert: pears & grapes dusted w/powdered sugar, cream puffs, pretzels, cheese cake, crème brûlée, soufflé, cookies, cupcakes. H abitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh will hold its annual Interfaith Celebration on Sunday, October 6, at 3:30 p.m. (refreshments at 3 o’clock), in Guzman Chapel on the campus of Mount St. Mary College, Powell Ave., in Newburgh. This event will take place in conjunction with World Habitat Day and celebrate the many Habitat Newburgh homes (more than 40%) sponsored by congregations and coalitions of faith communities. It is an occasion of song, prayer, and rededication to the Habitat mission. All are welcome! Come join the Habitat Newburgh community for an afternoon of story telling and sharing through music and hymns. This year our celebration is also linked with the 30th Anniversary of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. WHEN: Sunday October 6th, 2013 from 3:00PM to 4:30PM WHERE: Guzman Hall @ Mount Saint Mary College 4 NEWS FROM ST. THOMAS: THE CULINARY WORLD VOYAGE WAS A SMASHING GOOD TIME! M any thanks to all who supported St. Thomas’ very first Culinary World Voyage Fundraiser. Cuisine represented in abundance included Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Italy, Thailand, India, and Kazakhstan. It was a delicious afternoon filled with exotic flavors, live music, and some spontaneous dancing as well! Many thanks especially to Kara Smith for the idea and spearheading this truly “fun” fundraiser. And for those who weren’t able to attend in person, here are a few shots of the day for you to enjoy as you wait for next time…. 5 St. George’s Cemetery Matters community service workers in tasks for the good of the cemetery, has also added to the life and the appearance of our site. Thanks go to both Bill and the community service individuals. All who have ever served our cemetery have made a difference. We will have a different kind of service taking place in our cemetery on Friday, November 1st, at 5:30 p.m. It will be a prayer service commemorating all the faithful departed. Father Dustin will lead the brief service. Those who gathered last year were moved by the words of the service, its meaning and the cemetery setting. At the front of the cemetery in a circle we remember our beloved dead out loud, hear words of consolation, and renew our trust in Christ, praying, that together we may be one in Him, through whom we offer praises to the Father. W e all have a stake in St. George’s Cemetery. Therefore, we thank Bill Hildreth of William B. Hildreth Land Surveying for returning to the Clark Street perimeter of our cemetery and “staking out” again the boundary that he determined when he surveyed our property several years ago. This is important as we move forward in our goal to fence the Clark Street side of our 7.4 acre site. Richard Simms, our maintenance/volunteer coordinator, has reported that five preliminary fencing bids were received . Further data needs to be ascertained, then final bids will be sought, and the information passed on to the building and grounds committee and the vestry. The cemetery committee is excited over the bidding process and the quality of the bidders. We ask your continuing prayers as we move forward with this significant maintenance/restoration project. Prayers for a wonderful work session were answered when the September 28th scheduled time arrived for our first fall clean-up . Thanks go to the seven people who spent part of their Saturday morning picking up trash and debris (about six bagsful) along the entire perimeter of our cemetery and reseeding one of the plots, as well as tending to the flowers still beautifying the area surrounding our entrance monument. Counted among the workers were Antonio Cruz, Luis Fonseca, Leslie Hoffman, Karen Mejia, the Rev. Wayne Schmidt, and Richard Simms. “Blessed are you, Lord our God, lover of souls. You uphold us in life and sustain us in death: To you be glory and praise forever!” St. George’s Cemetery is located at 145 Washington Street. Invite your friends and neighbors to attend the prayer service. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the church. The next cemetery committee meeting is slated for Monday, October 14th at 7:30 p.m. in the John Brown room. Thanks also to Ann Schmidt for providing and delivering coffee and doughnuts for the workers’ enjoyment. I am told that the first-time workers were so captivated by the whole experience at these holy grounds that they wish to take part in further opportunities for service at the cemetery. What a lift to the spirit of the cemetery committee and the cemetery itself. The fact that our lawn care professional, Bill Rose, has volunteered his time to supervise 6 EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY @ ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH 105 Grand Street, Newburgh, NY 12550 Wednesday Evenings from 6:30 – 9:00pm Openings in January 2014 for new participants. You do not have to belong to St. George’s or St. Thomas’ to participate in the group. OPEN HOUSE REMINDER: Wed, October 16, 2013; Wed November 6, 2013 ALL ARE WELCOME. COME JOIN US FOR AN EVENING AND TRY IT OUT! Education for Ministry (EFM) is one of the finest programs in the church for spiritual seekers. The program, over 30 years old, provides participants with a community to study and reflect on the Scriptures and Traditions of the Christian faith. Approximately 7,300 people enroll every year in seminars located throughout the United States and abroad. The program is run from the School of Theology (Episcopal) at the University of the South. The program meets for 34 weeks during the year, (January – June and September – December) once a week for 2 ½ hours, in a seminar format. There is a program cost for materials. Participants have weekly readings to study with the help of resource guides. As adult learners, group members set their own learning goals in the context of the seminar. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM participants move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God’s kingdom. The distinctive element of EFM is the theological reflection, an intentional group discussion that considers issues of interest to the group members, from the personal to the global, but all focused on our lives as practicing Christians. The program is Episcopalian in its roots but ecumenical in its perspective and it is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of faith tradition. You can also find out more at the program’s website, which is www.sewanee.edu/EFM/index.htm.
