February-March, 2016 - Monticello School District
SCHOOL DISTRICT OF MONTICELLO FEBRUARY-MARCH 2016 Monticello’s values build world ready citizens From the Desk of the Principal by Mark Gustafson The first half of school has really gone fast. Our students in the elementary are already preparing for the 100th day of school which will occur during the second week of February. Our elementary teachers have a lot of fun activities planned for that day. Make sure to watch for more information regarding the 100th day of school. Our high school and middle school students have already begun their new schedules for the second semester, and we will soon be crafting the schedule for the 16-17 school year. We are going to begin our “season of assessments” during February and March as well. Students in grades 3-8 will be taking the new state assessment called the Forward Exam. Our students in grades 9 and 10 will be taking the ACT Aspire this spring, and all of our Juniors will be taking the ACT plus writing and the ACT Workkeys assessment on March 1 and 2. The data from these assessments will be used by the state in order to create our district report card, which will look a little different next year than in years past. Make sure to help out our district by making sure that our students get a restful sleep so they are better prepared for these assessments. Homecoming Week begins on February 8. Our Student Council is hard at work in order to make it as successful as ever. The competition for the “Pony Spirit Stick” between the classes is always fun to watch. Make sure to try and make it to our sporting events during that week so you can witness “Pony Pride” all over the school. Homecoming Week ends with the dance on February 13 in the Rehmstedt Gym starting at 7:00 PM. We will be offering a school musical this year instead of our traditional senior play. Our students have been putting in a lot of work in order to make the performance something to remember. Our advisors, Paul Burk, Kim Becker, and Mike Pollock are working with our “actors” in order to present the community with something to be proud of. “Snoopy the Musical” will be Saturday evening March 12 with a matinee to follow on the 13th. Our school has really made an effort to reach out and communicate with the community using social media. Many of our elementary classrooms have created grade level Facebook pages, and our district Facebook page has close to 400 followers. We have also created a Twitter account so make sure to search for and follow #GoPonies for more district information. We love to celebrate the great things that are going on in our school, so please make sure you are part of the celebration by following us on Facebook and Twitter. Go Ponies!!! 4 Year Old Kindergarten News by Kristin Roth Yippee! 2016 is off to a spectacular start, and we’re looking forward to February! We’ve been adding some letters to our knowledge base, and we will add even more in February, including Ll, Cc, Hh, Uu, and Rr in February. We spent some time talking about what the word peace means to us, and how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to make sure everyone was treated fairly so we could live in peace. We’ve also been exploring and talking about our names, and snow. In February, we’ll learn more about how to make and keep friends, and we’ll also learn about what mail is in our dramatic play post office. We’ll be working on more assessments soon to see how much your child has learned, so keep up the reading routines, name-writing practice, letter-naming, and counting at home!!! Families, please also keep watch in your kiddo’s folder for news about our second conferences, coming up this month! Order forms can be found on the web site or in the office. It is vision and hearing screen time! During the month of February, all elementary students, 7 th graders, and 9th graders will have their vision screened. Hearing screening will be done in the 4K and 5K classes. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A CALL OR A LETTER FROM ME, YOUR CHILD PASSED HIS/HER SCREENINGS. A big thank you goes out to the Monticello Lion’s club for again assisting with vision screening. The Lion Club’s has access to a digital photoscreening camera, and this camera will be used to screen our 3K, 4K, and 5K students. Photoscreening cameras can detect abnormalities in the eyes that may lead to conditions such as near and farsightedness. This way of vision screening works especially well in younger children – each child needs to look at the camera for a matter of seconds and images of the child’s pupils are obtained. While vision and hearing screenings at school can be very helpful in finding students who may have sensory difficulties, these screenings are very basic and not foolproof. Having successfully passed these screenings does not guarantee that a child has or will always have good hearing and vision. Below are some common signs of vision and hearing difficulties for you to review. If you have any concerns, please have your child evaluated by his/her medical provider. If your child is in need of an eye exam and/or glasses and there are financial concerns, our local Lion’s club has resources to help. Please contact me at school if you are in need of assistance, and I will confidentially contact the Lion’s club on your behalf. As always, please feel free to contact me at school with any questions or concerns you have. Chapters from all across the state were allowed to send two leaders from each chapter in preparation for finishing the school year strong. Members developed advanced leadership skills by attending various workshops and explored ideas for banquet planning, speaking contest preparation, and proficiency and scholarship applications. As our FFA chapter prepares for the busy winter and spring season ahead, we have to give thanks to those that allow us to participate in these many functions. Recently, the Monticello School Board approved our chapter to send members to Oklahoma in May for the National Soils Judging Contest, to the Washington Leadership Conference this summer and National FFA Convention in the fall. We are also fortunate to have many sponsors who assist with our many activities. Not only do we work with fundraising throughout the year with fruit and pork sales, but we also owe gratitude to the Monticello FFA Alumni who just recently donated a large sum of money to our chapter to help in funding all of our chapter functions. Many thanks to the FFA Alumni and its members for working hard throughout the year to help generate funds that come back to us. Pictured here are Marissa Peterson (on left) and Megan Lehr on their way back from the Half-Time Leadership Conference in Stevens Point. Lastly, Erin Lehr and Megan Lehr attended a meeting of the Stateline Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, and a special thanks goes out to them as they also donated a sum of money to our chapter in December. With many events soon to come, including speaking contests, State FFA Degree Applications and Proficiencies, and Career Development Events, we’ll try to keep everyone posted on our chapter and individual successes. Thanks again to the Monticello School Board, Monticello FFA Alumni, and the Stateline Trailblazers Snowmobile Club for helping our chapter with future activities to come.
