Visitors are enthralled by the world-famous collection, filled with six centuries of European paintings. The highlights of the collection include the

artists. The gallery is currently undergoing extensive maintenance work.
From 26 February 2016 the collection highlights will be on display in the
newly renovated eastern wing of the Semper Building.
The Dresden Collection is one of the largest porcelain collections in the
world, not least because of its outstanding items of early Meissen porcelain and East Asian porcelain from the 17th and early 18th centuries. The

The Green Vault is one of the most famous and largest museums of
treasures in the world. In the New Green Vault, visitors can get close to
marvels in gold, silver, precious stones, enamel, ivory and amber, on show

LIPSIUSBAU
In the 19th century a magnificent centre of the arts was founded between
Frauenkirche and Brühlsche Terrasse. The richly decorated complex of
buildings was named the ‘Lipsiusbau’ (Lipsius building) after its founder,
professor of architecture Constantin Lipsius. Alongside the Academy of
Fine Arts, it houses an exhibition hall of the Dresden State Art Collections.
COIN CABINET
LIPSIUSBAU EXHIBITION HALL
The Dresden Coin Cabinet is one of the oldest and most important of
its kind. The coins, medals and bank notes on display are tangible evidence of human history, from antiquity through to modern times. Since
June 2015 the Coin Cabinet has been on display in its original home
in the Georgenbau building at the Royal Palace, in a fully redesigned
permanent exhibition.
The Lipsius building with its impressive architecture is host to regular
special exhibitions of paintings, drawings and sculptures from the 20th

JÄGERHOF
JAPANESE PALACE
The Jägerhof looks back over an eventful past. For most of its 400-year
history, the house was used by the royal hunt. Nowadays, the Jägerhof,
as a building of historic importance, is a reminder of the pre-Baroque
architecture of Dresden during the 16th century and at the beginning
of the 17th century.
The Japanese Palace is a building with a colourful history and a site of
special cultural interest. It played a key role during the Baroque period
in Dresden. With this building, August the Strong (1670–1733) planned to
turn his dream of a porcelain palace into reality. The rooftops and interior
decoration – everything would be made of porcelain. However, the full
vision of the porcelain palace was never completed. Only a few rooms
are publicly accessible, mostly during special exhibitions.

and candle pyramids, magnificent costumes, ceramics, furnishings and
much more are on display.
DRESDEN ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Dresden Damascus Room is currently undergoing refurbishment.
The museum therefore remains closed as of April 2015. Nonetheless,
visitors are able to follow progress for the duration of this work. The
Museum offers special tours that include entry to the open workshop

PANOMETER DRESDEN
map

The Panometer in Dresden, a historical gasometer built in 1880, makes
an impressive 3,000-m2 setting for the powerful images of Yadegar Asisi’s
360° panoramas.
For the first quarter of every year, the huge circular painting “DRESDEN
1945: tragedy and hope of a European city” is displayed on its walls,
27 metres high and 106 metres in circumference. The rest of the year,
“BAROQUE DRESDEN: the myth of the royal city of Saxony” is shown.
This final touch to this unique event is the changing cycle from day to night
and the accompanying music providing an atmospheric tapestry of sound.
An exhibition about the panorama introduces visitors to each subject. The
panoramas are supplemented by guided tours for young and old and a
film on the creation of the panoramas and the motivation behind them.
The Panometer houses:

the outskirts of the Radeberger Vorstadt district is a place for GermanPolish cultural exchange. Frequent special exhibitions give a vivid insight
into cultural life in Poland.
The former summer residence of Carl Maria von Weber is now home to a
unique museum, which is dedicated to the life and work of the composer.
The museum attracts many international visitors. It was here that Weber
composed the operas Der Freischütz, Euryanthe, Oberon and the Invitation to the Dance.

PALITZSCH MUSEUM
SCHILLER PAVILION
In the Palitzsch museum, the 7,000-year-old traces of settlement in the
area around Prohlis form the starting point for the newly created area of
the permanent exhibition – ‘Prohlis, Palitzsch and the Planets’ – which
tells the story of the Dresden district. The main attraction is a digital
planetarium.
The Schiller Pavilion, the city’s smallest museum, is a reminder of Friedrich
Schiller’s time in Dresden. Documents, extracts from poetry he wrote
here and reproductions of a few pictures give a flavour of the period in
which Schiller worked on the Don Carlos manuscript and completed
the Ode to Joy.

MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY
GALERIE KOMISCHE MEISTER
The Museum has recently undergone a major redesign by Daniel Libeskind. The exhibits have been chosen to portray violence as a historical,
cultural and anthropological phenomenon. The aim is to provoke thoughtful responses and to serve as a forum for understanding the history of
armed conflict and for dialogue about the past, present and future of
warfare and the military.
Old Masters, New Masters and now Comic Masters: Dresden’s new caricatures gallery presents current works by renowned German caricaturists in
temporary exhibitions. The famous German Caricature Award has already
been presented in Dresden since the year 2000, and now the genre is also
to have its own gallery.

‘Just’ Baroque either side of the Elbe? The Hans Körnig Museum presents
modern graphic art and painting in the Baroque Neustadt district. Hans
Körnig (1905–1989) worked at No. 2 Wallgäßchen and opened his studio in the 1950s for his legendary attic exhibitions. Today, the museum
presents Körnig’s wide range of complex works in the house where the
artist once worked.
The OSTRALE deals with the issue of placing creative inspiration in a
temporal, spatial and cultural context. Painting, sculpture, photography,
sound, light, video, installation and performance art.
From 1 July to 25 September 2016, up to 200 artists from more than 30
nations will be presenting the entire spectrum of contemporary art in the

Located in Radebeul, the country’s largest museum of its kind is home
to a unique historic exhibition illustrating life and work in former East
Germany. It features aspects of the political structure as well as various
vehicles, technical equipment, furniture and numerous special exhibits.
This permanent exhibition is dedicated to Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s
life and work, and features many exhibits, first editions, engravings and
sculptures. Writing table displays give an emotional dimension to Lessing’s living conditions. His fables, selected plays, theoretical writings and
play ‘Nathan the Wise’ have their own separate display areas.

Karl May’s extraordinary life, his imaginative fiction and his memorable
heroes are the subject of the exhibition ‘Karl May – Leben und Werk’ (Karl
May – Life and Work) which occupies his former residence of Villa Shatterhand in Radebeul. Villa Bärenfett is given over to the culture, history
and handicrafts of the Native Americans. The latest feature in the Museum
Park is a prospector’s gold wash.
The Sakralmuseum houses a unique ensemble of five late-Gothic carved
altars. Visitors can also admire other examples of late medieval piety
and of the Reformation. The story is also told of the Franciscan monks
in Kamenz, of pious patrons and Protestant Sorbs, and of the veneration
of saints and the power of faith.

FESTUNG DRESDEN
ELIAS, TRINITATIS & JOHANNIS CEMETERY
Underneath Brühl’s Terrace – which also goes by the name of ‘Balcony
of Europe’ – is Festung Dresden (Dresden Fortress), probably the oldest
preserved part of the city. A tour of the interior with its subterranean
atmosphere reveals stone relics of the Renaissance period.
Dresden’s oldest and most beautiful cemeteries contain the graves of
famous personalities. More on Gustl von Blasewitz can be found at the
Elias Cemetery. Information on the painter Caspar David Friedrich is
provided at the Trinitatis Cemetery and a great deal is told of the architect
Paul Wallot at the Johannis Cemetery.

THEATERKAHN – THE THEATRE ON THE ELBE
The Societaetstheater is the oldest still existing theatre in Dresden. The
Baroque building is now home to a modern ensemble which performs
drama, dance and musicals, both national and international. Two stages
are supplemented by a third in the Baroque garden during the summer
months. There are regular concerts and festivals. In addition to its contemporary programme, it also features a theatre restaurant.
The Theaterkahn has a special atmosphere. It is housed on a ship in the
centre of the Altstadt between the Frauenkirche and the Semperoper.
Exceptional actors and musicians offer small-scale musical and theatrical
performances. The repertoire includes more than 20 productions from

A ribbon of music links the Semper Opera House, Kreuzkirche, theatre
and Frauenkirche, where the creative genius of Richard Wagner celebrates
resounding triumphs, Weber was inspired by the dramatic heights of
Saxon Switzerland to write his Freischütz, and the voices of the Kreuzchor
boy choir rouse intense feelings.

FRAUENKIRCHE VIEWING PLATFORM
CLIMB THE KREUZKIRCHE TOWER
A very special attraction of the Frauenkirche is the ascent to the dome and
the viewing platform. Visitors first use a lift until they reach the cupola to
then walk along a stepless spiraling rising walkway that circles the dome
two and a half times. After two further stairway sections they reach the
67 meter high viewing platform. There, a unique view over Dresden and
the surroundings opens up.
A step closer to heaven… The tower of the Kreuzkirche church has dominated the skyline since 1792. It survived both the 1897 Kreuzkirche fire
and the bombing of 1945. Visitors cannot climb the 92 metres right to the
top of the cross, but the viewing platform 54 metres up offers a fantastic
panoramic view of Dresden and far beyond.

SUSPENSION RAILWAY
WEISSERITZ VALLEY RAILWAY
Passengers on the oldest suspension railway in the world can enjoy magnificent views of Dresden and the whole Elbe valley from the platform of
the upper station. For anyone interested in technology and history, a visit
to the machine room is well worth while.
Freital near Dresden is home to Germany’s oldest operating narrow-gauge
railway. The track passes through three very different natural settings on
one of Europe’s most beautiful routes: the wildly romantic Rabenau Gorge,
the region around the Malter dam and the mountainous landscape of the
Osterzgebirge. The journey from Freital-Hainsberg to Dippoldiswalde is
approximately 45 minutes.

KIRNITZSCHTALBAHN
Since 1884, the steam-powered narrow-gauge railway has been running
from Radebeul Ost station past romantic vineyards, through the narrow
Lössnitz gorge and the Moritzburg lake district with its famous castle
Moritzburg, and on to the town of Radeburg, birth place of Heinrich Zille.
The journey from Radebeul-Ost via Moritzburg to Radeburg is approximately 50 minutes.
Probably unique in Germany, the Kirnitzschtalbahn tram has been running through this dense woodland and the craggy sandstone formations
created by the wind and weather since 1898. The nine stops along the
way are all starting points for exciting walks in the Saxon Switzerland
national park. The duration of the journey from Bad Schandau Kurpark
to Lichtenhain waterfall is approximately 25 minutes.
