London continues to attract new residents
London has a drawing power that local residents
continue to cultivate and are proud to boast about.
And rightly so. Founded in 1793 by John Graves
Simcoe at the forks of the Thames River, London
today is Canada’s 10th largest city, and a regional
centre for Southwestern Ontario.
London which now boasts over 300,000
residents, has managed to retain the beauty that
dubbed it the Forest City. Greenery and modern
architecture reside hand-in-hand, expanding out
from picturesque waterways and the
forks of the Thames.
Housing, education and tourism all play
significant roles in giving this vibrant city its
magnetic qualities as well. The London Home
builders Association is proud to play a major role
in making London one of Canada’s premium cities.
The LHBA has a simple-yet-effective
Mission…the betterment of the community with
active participants using their talents, products and
service to enhance living for London families.
Home builders like Sunningdale Homes,
Rembrandt Homes and the Covington Group are
keeping the buzz about home building alive,
vibrant and new. These proud Londoners, are
committed to building homes on wonderful lots
and community based subdivisions. As a
testament, housing starts in 2002 are currently

All in all, London has a drawing power
that’s contagious. From its serene beauty
and community-based family subdivisions…to world-class colleges and
universities. London continues to be a terrific place to raise a family, grow a business and obtain a top-notch education.
Welcome to the “city of choice” in

without compromise continues to make
London home base for thousands of
residents.
Equally as proud of “community” are
the schools of higher learning in London.
The University of Western Ontario (UWO)
and Fanshawe College are 2 prime
examples. The UWO was founded in
1878, and is one of Canada’s oldest and
most respected universities. Alumni date
back to 1883 with degrees granted in
medicine and the arts. Today, UWO has
nearly 23,000 undergraduate and graduate
students and close to 1200 faculty
members. Western has 50 degree granting
programs offered, with research and
development playing an integral part.
UWO is located on 155 hectares of land in
the heart of London.
Fanshawe College of Applied Arts &
Technology also calls London home.
Here programs in science, computer
studies, health care and child psychology
are highly recognized for their excellence
and growing numbers of graduates.
As a new development on the scene, the
City of London has recently announced a
new Sports and Entertainment facility
being built in the downtown core. This
first-class, year-round complex with 9,000
fixed seats for hockey and floor events and
up to 11,000 seats for concerts and special
events, will
mark its debut in Fall 2002. This complex
will revitalize and create new excitement

London’s Bio-technology Health Care Network
Leading the way in Canada and the World
erving a population of nearly 1/2
million in south central Ontario,
London is now home to 13 hospitals
& research centres, and 18 medical care &
service companies and firms. Fundamental
to this medical networking foundation, is
the evolving and significant Bio-technology sector. Just this year, a joint $10 million grant from the city of London and the
Province of Ontario, has resulted in the
creation of the Biotech London Council to
promote and market this technology-based
medical platform.
As an integral partner and key
contributor, the long-standing relationship
with London’s own University of Western
Ontario (UWO), has played a major role
in this emerging field of study.
The UWO’s inter-connected Research
Departments of Engineering, Chemistry,
Plant Science, Anatomy, Immunology,
Biophysics and Physiology, among others,
are poised to develop and foster significant
Bio-technology advancement on a national
scale. As recently as a year-and-a-halfago, UWO was awarded $1.4 million by
the U.S.-based Whitaker Foundation,
S
specifically geared towards the establishment of graduate programs in Bio-medical
Engineering. Key is the application of
engineering principles to new medical
challenges. London is fast becoming
known as the Canadian Centre and worldclass leader in Bio-technology, due in
part, to the importance that UWO and its
affiliates have given this new discipline.
The London Health Care industry has
long been regarded as an excellent
medical centre, and with good reason.
London is home to several highly
regarded research-based establishments,
including St. Joseph’s Health Care
London with superior programming in
mental health, women’s health,
cardiology, urology and diagnostic
imaging. This community-based facility
is dedicated to breakthrough research
and results.
The London Health Sciences Centre has
been singled out as one of Canada’s
largest teaching hospitals. The LHSC’s
mission it is to offer top-notch patient care,
new insight research and innovation,
which now attracts physicians and
