Our congregation is alive, well and thriving. But we are also deeply aware of the changing landscape of South Shore Long Island Jewry. Rather waiting until we are in serious trouble, we are trying to address the challenges now. So let me tell you what’s right about OJC. We have over 350 families in our congregation. Our nursery school is an attraction for young families. Children are happy attending our religious school and they are learning. Our staff has changed to reflect the changing needs of our congregation. We're widely respected in the Jewish community for the type of programming we offer, our vibrant Minyanim, and our outstanding arms: Sisterhood, Men's Club, PTA, and Couples Club. We were pioneers in bringing PJ library to Long Island. And we are fortunate to have outstanding professional and lay leaders who are passionately committed to our congregation. This evening we are honoring them: Rabbi Aviva and Ari Fellman, and Bernie and Helene Kenner. We also have caring and visionary partners like Arnie Preminger. That’s not to say that we don’t have challenges. OJC is smaller than it used to be. We just faced one of the most challenging years in our history. Families are just beginning to rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. We have an aging building that is in need of serious capital to maintain itself. We believe, however, that a congregation is not measured by the size of the building but by the vibrancy of its membership. It is also measured values, ideals and vision. But we cannot do it alone. We need you to be a part of this discussion and the solution. Help us decide where OJC should be over the next decade. OJC is alive and well - and doing what most congregations are afraid to do these days - planning for the future rather than simply coping in the present. And we are fortunate to have leaders who are making that happen! We recently observed the festival of Pesach. Pesach is the time of the year that Jews around the world re-tell the story of the Exodus – the Israelites being led out of Egypt and becoming a free nation. The leaders of this story were instrumental in making this new nation a unified community. OJC is proud to recognize leaders in our community that are instrumental in making the Oceanside Jewish Center, and the Oceanside community, a unified Kehilah. Bernard and Helene Kenner are long standing members of the Oceanside Jewish Center. They have volunteered their time and have positively made their mark on the successes that OJC has experienced in the many years they have been here. And not just to OJC but to the Oceanside community as well. The Kenner’s are shomrims, guardians of our Jewish traditions. Ari and Rabbi Aviva Fellman are new comers to OJC. But they have already made their mark in such a short period of time. They, along with their daughter Hadar, continue to reach out to the community and show us new ways to experience Judaism in shul and in our homes. OJC is pleased to recognize Arnie Preminger as a member of the Oceanside community. As the President and CEO of the Oceanside Friedberg JCC, the commitment and services he provides is central to the Jewish people of Oceanside and the surrounding communities. OJC honors and recognizes these leaders of today, becoming part of the story of what it takes to unify a community. These leaders, individually and collectively, are endlessly part of the story that strengthens and maintains a Jewish Kehilah. Congratulations! William Gurman OJC President Biographies Rabbi Aviva and Ari Fellman Rabbi Aviva was in Israel for a year of her Jewish Theological Seminary rabbinical training; Ari was nearing the end of a ten-year stint as an engineer in the Israel Defense Forces. They met after a Kabbalat Shabbat service at a Masorti congregation in Tel Aviv, and, a little under a year later, they were married in Jerusalem. While on their honeymoon in Guatemala, Rabbi Aviva interviewed and accepted the position as Rabbinic Intern at OJC. Rabbi Aviva and Ari have brought an infectious enthusiasm that bridges generations and enhances the vibrant spirit and traditions of OJC. When not working in Brooklyn as an Electronics Engineer for Minicircuits, Ari can be found attending minyan and reading Torah. From Tot Shabbat to Torah reading, from Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring to adult education, and from directing the Religious School and attending daily minyanim, Rabbi Aviva has enlivened OJC values: a caring community, a love of learning, an appreciation of ritual and services. Rabbi Aviva and Ari were initially attracted by the warm welcome they received at OJC, and they have come to appreciate how the community is receptive to new ideas, programming and melodies...and to the spirited presence of their daughter Hadar. (Stay tuned- The Fellmans are expecting the arrival of their second under-age minyan attendee in June…) The dynamic Fellman duo truly live in the synagogue. In opening their homes for Shabbat meals and other gatherings, Rabbi Aviva and Ari reflect the open arms of OJC; in their teaching and leading they mirror the mentoring and guidance that Rabbi Mark and Marilyn Greenspan have offered them; in becoming an integral part of OJC, they emulate the commitment of the leadership and membership of the congregation. Rabbi Aviva and Ari Fellman are humbled and honored to be recognized at this year’s gala. Thank you for being part of our family! We wish Aviva, Ari and Hadar good health and happiness for many years to come. Biographies Helene and Bernard Kenner Helene grew up in an observant family in Brooklyn. She graduated with a BA in French from LIU, and went on to teach French and ESL in Brooklyn, where she met Bernard. While working, she completed a Masters in ESL at Adelphi University and a Certificate in Reading. Bernard also has his roots in Brooklyn, getting his BS in Biology from Brooklyn College, and an MA in Biology at Hofstra while working in Brooklyn. They were married in 1970, and moved to Oceanside in 1976. They are the proud parents of Steven and Russell, who were both Bar Mitzvahs at OJC. Helene and Bernard joined OJC and they have been actively involved ever since. Jewish education has always been important to Helene and she quickly took an active role in the PTA helping with holiday preparations, organizing many events and activities for the Hebrew School students. She eventually became President of the PTA and was honored by the Board of Jewish Education of New York. She also was a substitute teacher at OJC, using her extensive Hebrew background and education. Over the years, Helene continued her participation in other arms of the Temple as well. After becoming active in Sisterhood, she eventually became Sisterhood President twice. She served on the Board of Trustees and cochaired Adult Education for several years. She is now co-chair of the Judaica Gift Shop and has done the New Year Leagrams for the last three years. Helene is a Life Member of Hadassah and has been President of Oceanside Hadassah. She is currently serving on the Nassau County Executive Board as an Area Vice President. Bernard did not get involved as quickly as Helene did, but, eventually became involved in Men’s Club where he chaired many events, such as Parent /Child Breakfasts, incoming and outgoing dinners, Lag B’Omer field days, and cooked countless hot dogs and burgers at Purim carnivals and Hebrew School end of year barbeques. Bernard was elected Men’s Club President and honored a few years later as Men’s Club Man of the Year. Still active on the Board of Trustees, he served on several search committees for Rabbis and Cantors. He co – chaired the Kol Nidre Committee for several years, and has run the Passover wine sale for the last thirteen. He is currently the OJC House Chair and continues to be involved with Men’s Club. Bernard is an Associate of Hadassah. He has been a swimming instructor at the JCC since 2000, and started a wine education and consultation business, because of his interest in wine and food. OJC has been and continues to be a very important part of their lives, and they are thrilled to be this year’s Honorees. May Helene, Bernard and Family continue to go from strength to strength! Biographies Arnie Preminger President and CEO of Friedberg JCC Arnie Preminger has been involved in the JCC movement for the past 36 years, having begun his career as a youth worker and camp counselor in the Bronx in 1976. For the last 28 of those years, Arnie has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Friedberg JCC, during which time he presided over the expansion of the agency from a $120,000 operating budget to its current incarnation as the only full-service JCC on the south shore of Long Island with annual operations totaling over $12 million. He has overseen the fundraising and construction of two major facilities, including a 57,000 square foot center for operations in Oceanside and a brand-new 8800 square foot pavilion at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in Wheatley Heights, and is currently involved in a new 18,000 square foot expansion of the JCC’s main facility. Arnie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Social Work. He was the first recipient of the Bessie Pine Award for Excellence in Mentoring, has trained emerging professionals as JCC Association’s “Scholar in Residence”, served as President of the Eastern Region of the Association of Jewish Center Professionals, and was the first recipient of The “Sofer” award (which is Hebrew for “Scribe”) by National AJCW for excellence in writing. Arnie presented the first scholarly alumni’s paper on “Social Work and the Holocaust” at Hunter College School of Social Work’s 100th Anniversary Symposium, and his articles on myriad social and political issues have been published in Newsday, The Jewish Star, the Jewish World, the JCC Association Circle, and most recently in the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. He is co-editor – along with Joe Harris – of the JCC Association publication “Strategic Alliances: A Compilation of Successful Collaborative Programs” and has taught on the subject to professionals around the country. Arnie is founder and CEO of Sunrise Day Camp, which he opened in 2006 – the only full summer, dedicated day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings. An initiative of the Friedberg JCC, Sunrise quickly expanded its services to include year-round programming, hospital visitations, and bringing camp activities into outpatient clinics at affiliated hospitals. In 2010, Sunrise opened its second summer day camp in the State of Israel, currently hosting 175 Israeli children, both Jewish and Arab. Arnie was recognized in 2006 with the “Health Care Heroes” award through Long Island Business News, and again in 2009 as the first “Eyewitness News Hero” by WABC TV in New York. Arnie is the proud father of two remarkable children (if he says so himself), Melissa 24, and Sam 21, both of whom he says are his greatest achievements. Message from OJC Community Gala Committee We are proud to honor Rabbi Aviva and Ari Fellman, as our Leadership Honorees. Helene and Bernard Kenner as the Outstanding Award Recipients. We are happy to bestow upon Arnie Preminger, CEO of the Friedberg JCC, a Community Service Award. This has been a difficult time for the Jewish Community of the South Shore and each of our Honorees has had a part in bringing our community together. We wish them good health and may they continue to go from strength to strength.
