The first professional Ukrainian theater was founded in Lviv in 1864.
It was called the «Teatr Ruskoyi Besidy» (The Rus’ Theater Company).
The Theater Company toured Halychyna (Galicia) and Bukovyna, and
travelled to Poland (Nowy Sanzc, Tarnow, Krakow). They also performed
beyond the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: in KamianetsPodilsky, Zhmeryntsi, and Zhytomyr. Actors in Polish theater groups in
Lviv performed on this stage, but other guests included such renowned
performers as Marko Kropyvnytsky (1875), Mykola Sadovsky and Maria
Zankovetska (1905 – 1906). Halychyna and the regions along the
Dnipro River joined their creative forces together, and exchanged
stage experiences, thus enabling Galician theaters to raise the artistic
level of their respective repertoires.

In 1724, the Lviv municipal councilor (starosta), Adam Senyavsky
gave his daughter, Sofia, away in marriage. He became famous when
he celebrated this special occasion by organizing a magnificent, but
very unusual public event. Towers decorated with flowers were erected
all across Ploshcha Rynok (Market Square) to the Archbishops Palace.
Six hundred torches and four hundred lanterns burnt brightly at the
top of the towers. While guests gathered to celebrate in the building,
servants poured expensive Hungarian wine from large vats into the
four drainpipes for a full hour. The citizens of Lviv were amazed by
such lavishness and held basins and hats up to the pipes. Other people,
who were thirsting to taste the expensive beverage, just lay down on
the cobblestones and opened their mouths wide.

Festival «Fort. Missia -2009» on the defence forts of
World War I. It is held in the unique forts of World War I on the
Ukrainian-Polish border territories in Popovychi Village near
Shehyni Village. Literature project «Kabi.net» will organize
presentations with participation of modern writers, poets, and
playwrights with traditional on-line broadcast. At nights powerful
Lviv DJs from «Funkmasters» will create electronic music. Within
the framework of the festival environment and lend-art projects,
multimedia projects, and performances of Ukrainian and Polish
artists will be presented. Besides traditional formats, the cuttingedge musical, literature, and artistic phenomena will be
demonstrated during the festival. Entertaining attributes of the
festival: craftsmen galleries, local cuisine, «Cossack» and «Bike ride
Lviv-Paris» programs of the Auto ZAZ project, performances of vocal
and choreographic bands from Poland, Slovakia, local bands, other
solemn events, performances of such bands as Haidamaky, Mertviy
Piven, Vo-Vo, ShockolaD, Lomaga Band, Dalai Lama, Orchestra Vito,

Art song festival «Dykyi Med». The art song festival
«Dykyi Med» takes place in picturesque town Skole, Lviv Region,
near the Carpathian Mountains. It aims at developing and promotion
of modern art song by different ways of its presentation and

International Music Festival «Stare Selo». Legends of
world’s dance-floors are to perform, whose arrival to Ukraine causes
sensation. Three days of various music non-stop. Enclosed secured
camping is situated near the castle. You may camp there for free.
There are tents for rent. The territory is under 24-hours security
surveillance. Busses run constantly from Lviv to Festival and back

Music Festival «Pidkamin-2009». Annual ethnic festival taking
place in picturesque Pidkamin Village has become traditional.

On 14th July, 1894, a remarkable event took place in the history of
Ukrainian football – the first football game was played between the
Lviv and Krakow municipal teams, «Sokil». The newspaper, «Gazeta
Lwowska» reported that the Lviv players wore grey gym shorts and white
sports shirts, whereas the footballers from Krakow played in blue shorts
and white sports shirts. Volodymyr Khomytsky, a student at the Lviv
Pedagogical University, scored a goal in the sixth minute of the game.
