GLOCAL MISSION CELEBRATION 2016 BEING WITNESSES IN JERUSALEM, JUDEA, SAMARIA AND THE ENDS OF THE EARTH Sunday March 6 – JERUSALEM & JUDEA Sunday March 13 – SAMARIA Sunday March 20 – ENDS OF THE EARTH Saturday March 12 – A special GMC Seminar day Being Witnesses – Here and There visit us at www.bramalea.org Projects GMC 2016 – SPECIAL PROJECTS – GOAL = $20,000 Please use the special green “Glocal Mission Celebration” envelope to give to GMC Projects 2016 Donations can be made up to April 3, 2015 GO – Global Outreach Project = $10,000 Partnering with Key Leaders and Organization to Equip National Believers from a Muslim background (BMB) as leaders in a restricted access Arab nation. For security reasons we won't spell out particulars, but the goal of this specific project is to launch a 1 year program to train 10 underground church leaders with a vision that each one of them will accomplish 2 Timothy 2:2 by discipling and training at least 10 other new Muslim converts. The country targeted is one of the most restricted countries in the Arab world. The very fragile church (mainly formed of BMBs) is trying her best to survive in the midst of very severe waves of suffering and persecution. They are in desperate need of the equipping and discipling that this project can provide. By the end of the first year, the intention is to establish a national steering committee that will take ownership of this program in that country. Our goal at BBC is to raise $10,000 toward the $17,200 needed for this whole project. For more details on this project – contact Pastor Semple or Jeannie Boisvenue ssemple@bramalea.org / jboisvenue@bramalea.org LO – Local Outreach Project = $10,000 ‘Loving Our Neighbours Across The Street’ – Onsite outreach to high-rise, high-need families in Brampton Inspired by the Browns, a Brampton couple who obeyed the Lord’s call to “move in” to the Knightsbridge apartments, BBC’s Iron Men will take the lead in starting a BBC outreach ministry to high-need families in the high-rise apartments like at Lisa Street and/or Kennedy Road. For those who will not cross the street to come to “church”, the church will cross the street to take Jesus to them – through deed and word. Among the planned outreach activities will be 1. Refresh - painting apartments at no cost to the residents as a way to meet and get connected with them and to build trust with the management of the buildings. 2. Free Store - an apartment rented to take in material offerings from local believers and to give it away to apartment residents as they have needs. The apartment would also be the base for outreach to the resident families such as 3. Kids Club - Bible-based weekly teaching and activities Our GMC goal for this Local Outreach is to raise $10,000 towards the $15,000 rent for an apartment for the Free Store. Be-ing Witnesses … In Acts 1:8 Jesus’ final words to his disciples are “… you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Note that Jesus did not say his disciples, then and now, should or must be his witnesses; he says we will be his witnesses. There is one condition: that we wait and receive power from the Holy Spirit. Have you experienced a personal Pentecost? The proof is that you are a witness to and of Jesus in and through your life. It is more about be-ing (a witness) than about doing (witnessing). Is your life in sync with your lips as a testimony to Jesus? Jesus even says where we are to be his witnesses: in Jerusalem AND Judea AND Samaria AND to the ends of the earth. Note that he does not leave us any choice – it’s AND, AND and not either/or – to cherry pick where we would like to be witnesses. But how can every one of us be witnesses in all these places, even sequentially, even over a lifetime? Obviously we can only be that as the body of Christ, the church. Therefore, as a local church, Bramalea Baptist intentionally intends to directly or through partnerships be and bring witness to Jesus everywhere there are no witnesses. BBC’s glocal (global + local) mission has now been clearly demarcated between Local Outreach and Global Outreach. Local Outreach covers our “Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria” – North America – and Global Outreach the rest – overseas to “the ends of the earth”. Being Witnesses – Here and There Saturday, March 12 @ 9:00 am – 3:30 pm with lunch A practical day of application and mobilization – putting action steps to our call to be on mission. Jesus DVD to our neighbours in Brampton Again this year, just before Easter, we will be distributing 2000 DVDs to Brampton homes to share the story of Jesus Christ. People will also receive a postcard invitation to the Good Friday and Easter Sunday services at BBC. Hopefully all of you who have participated in the past will do so again; together with new volunteers this distribution can happen quickly and easily. Teams of 2 or 3 will be assigned specific areas within which to distribute the DVDs. This is a great opportunity for your growth group to become involved! Distribution of Jesus DVDs with instruction and prayer: Saturday, March 19 - 9:00 am at BBC Lower Auditorium. … in our Jerusalem AND Judea What does “Jerusalem and Judea” mean today? Some would say just the area immediately around the church campus at Dixie and Queen. That would literally be parochial – a “parish” concept of a church’s sphere of influence. Most would agree that it at least extends to all of Brampton, the 9th largest and amongst the fastest growing cities of Canada. There are even some who would say the Peel Region or the GTA or even the Golden Horseshoe – all the way from Oshawa to Niagara Falls! Most of this area is of course urban. to us in Brampton But that’s only addressing geography. The Gospel is for people – all people. Traditionally "Jerusalem" was understood missiologically as geographically and culturally closest to the witnessing body of Christ. "Judea" was then understood as referring to those culturally close but geographically farther out. Think of Toronto and Ontario. This model worked fine so long as Canadian society was relatively homogenous – majority WASP or Caucasian at least. Today even the 905 zone around Toronto is very diverse; Brampton, one of Canada's most multicultural cities, is a case in point. Rural Ontario by and large continues to be culturally and ethnically homogenous and so would still qualify for our "Judea". Obviously we have to adapt culturally to each setting to be effective witnesses of Jesus. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." (I Cor. 9:22) Wednesday, March 9 @ 7:00 pm free DVD to everyone who attends Come with your friends and neighbours Peel Region Premiere @ Bramalea Baptist Church Guest Speaker on March 6 Nigel Paul “In early 2008, God led me to move into a Muslim-majority neighbourhood in Toronto at the invitation of a group of friends who had started a church-plant there. In January 2009, God gave me two words: ‘move in’. It was a message for my generation to imitate Christ and literally move in to the neighbourhood, specifically among the unreached, urban poor. “I wasn’t endeavouring to name a movement, but we later became known as the ‘move in’ people. That’s how we got our name. Today, MoveIn continues to spread across cities in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Europe and even Asia. Together, we have seen God work. We have seen people from Iran and Japan and Israel and Canada and India and other countries come to know Jesus. “I look and sound Canadian but am a mixed bag”. Born to missionary parents in Zambia, schooled in Kenya and Pakistan, he was the Travelling Assistant to OM founder George Verwer. In between the GTA has been home. He has a degree in Internet Business Entrepreneurship. Check out www.MoveIn.to … AND in our Samaria Once upon a time “Samaria” to the church across English Canada was synonymous with Quebec. In fact to this day some of our fellow churches see Quebec as part of "foreign" or "international" missions! All this because or despite the understanding that "Samaria" today represents that region and people that is culturally somewhat different and at some distance. Quebec remains at the heart of Bramalea Baptist's "Samaria" mission field. In fact, it is one of BBC's mission priority focus areas. We are investing in that over the long haul. (See box below) However, when in a city like Brampton (our Jerusalem) you just need to cross the fence or the street or the aisle to engage with people of other cultures, Samaria has come home. In fact, today it would be better to speak of our Samarias. While we tend to focus on the so-called visible minorities in our cities, the church in Canada has largely been blind to our First Nations peoples both on and off the reserves. Church Planting in Quebec Laval / Montreal Les Moulins is a regional county municipality of Quebec, located immediately north of Laval (Montreal) on the north shore of the Rivière des Mille-Îles. Its two main municipalities are Terrebonne and Mascouche. The Evangelical Baptist Church of Terrebonne-Mascouche (Eglise Baptiste Evangelique TerrebonneMascouche) under the leadership of Pastor Louis Bourque planted 6 daughter churches in the last 10 years. Pastor Louis now leads its church planting movement called the Conquering Vision. With God’s help and partnerships such as BBC’s the plan is to plant 10 new churches and train 15 new workers in the next 10 years. BBC’s commitment of $20,000 per year over 5 years will help achieve that goal. Our youth team joined theirs in local outreaches there last summer. This summer their youth will join ours for outreach in Brampton. Guest Speaker on March 13 Dr. Yaw Perbi Dr. Yaw Perbi is a medical doctor by training and has practiced medicine in both his home country, Ghana, and with the United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoire. After miraculously escaping a tragic road traffic accident in 2008, he strongly sensed the LORD had saved him for a purpose beyond medicine. In 2009 he hung his stethoscope to fully commit himself to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and raising emerging leaders worldwide; he hasn’t turned back since. Dr. Yaw Perbi and Anyele have four energetic children and currently resides in Montreal. Presently he pastors at the Montreal Chinese Alliance Grace Church. He is also involved in leadership and financial consultancy, and serving as Global CEO of The HuD Group with operations in over a dozen countries. Since 2013 he serves as the President of the International Student Ministries of Canada, with oversight of some 110 staff in 30 cities across Canada. He owes all these to Christ Jesus. (see www.yawperbi.com). … AND to the Ends of the Earth The Global Outreach of BBC has 4 priority focus areas: 1) Rising Sun - church planting in Japan 2) Oppressed Societies - development & discipleship among the Dalits in India 3) National Servants – training of national leaders 4) Desert Sand – outreach to Muslims in restricted access nations. Desert Sand will be the focus on March 20. There are many Muslim dominated countries in Arab world - North Africa and the Middle East (part of what is called the 10/40 Window) where it is not possible for a foreign missionary to get a visa. In this Desert Sand region there are countries where church activities are greatly restricted and some countries where open evangelism by Christians is completely prohibited. Many churches in these areas have to meet in secret and are sometimes referred to as Underground Churches. Many who live in these countries have suffered not only the ravages of poverty and disease, but they have also been kept from the transforming power of the Gospel. While fulfilling the Great Commission in those countries can be challenging, it is not impossible. Closed to missionaries does not mean closed to the gospel. We need to continue to pray for and find creative ways to introduce Jesus in these restricted access Muslim countries. Dr. Don Little, our speaker for the day (bio below), will highlight the great need and challenges in the Desert Sand region, and seek to inform and motivate us through Scriptures and stories to respond to reaching Muslims both across the street and around the world. “May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere. May the nations praise you, O God. Yes, may all the nations praise you.” Guest Speaker on March 20 Dr. Don Little God called Don Little to devote his life to reaching Muslims with the Gospel of Jesus Christ while he was still a teenager. At the age of 21, while serving with Operation Mobilization (OM) in India, he clearly sensed God narrowing this call on his life to church planting in the Arab world. As a result Don served with OM in Cairo and then joined with his wife Jeannie to serve with Arab World Ministries (AWM / now merged with Pioneers in 2010). After language studies Don and Jeannie ministered in a team as tentmakers and church planters in North Africa from 1988-1998. Upon returning to Canada in 1998 Don served as the Executive Director of AWM Canada for more than eight years. Currently they live in the U.S. but serve globally. Don is the Islamic Missiologist for Pioneers. He is also Editor of SEEDBED: Practitioners in Conversation, as well an Adjunct Professor of Islamic Studies and Ministry to Muslims at Houghton College in New York. In 2014 he co-founded the Lilias Trotter Center and currently serves as its Director. He has just published a book on discipling believers in Muslim communities.
