FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
THE FIRST OF THE MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
Origins and Values:
Middle East Technical University (METU) was established in
1956 as a Faculty of Architecture and Community Planning for
the Middle East region, through the collaboration of the Turkish
government and the UN. The Faculty of Architecture, originated
from this background with a special law which made it possible
for the best universal minds from all over the world to meet with
Turkish outlook, expertise and practice in the middle of Anatolia
(in Ankara).
The new academic attitude of the Faculty of Architecture mainly
consisted of critical outlook, new conceptual research for the
fundamentals of good design and good planning, a good mix
of international students from the region, open juries and open
discussions in the classes, social consciousness on a global
scale and taking social responsibility on a local scale. This is still
the major behaviour pattern in itself for our work at the Faculty.
In the early sixties, the Faculty founded the first Department of
City and Regional Planning and the first Department of
Architectural Conservation in Turkey and in 1979 the
Department of Industrial Design.

The University, in order to save the cultural heritage of the
campus, carried out excavations on METU campus site in
association with our Faculty. The findings dating from
5000-3000BC are now exhibited in the first private museum of
Turkey, which is in the Faculty complex.

Middle East Higher Institute of Technology Openning Ceremony
15 November 1956
The Faculty started publishing the Journal of the Faculty of
Architecture in 1975. A refereed journal, it was first of its kind
and accepts articles in both Turkish and English
(www.arch.metu.edu.tr/jfa.htm ). It is now in the Arts and
Humanities Citation Index as the only Turkish Architecture
journal and one of the approximately thirty journals covered by
the AHCI.
The documentation efforts of our Faculty’s heritage led to the
founding of Faculty Archive of Slides.Slides, produced since
1956 and which amounts to around 100.000 vernacular,
classical and modern buildings, environments and products, in
Turkey and abroad, Historic Buildings Documentation Archives
of about 800 historic monuments (some of which do not exist
anymore) and Planning Archives starting with some of the
originals of the Ankara Plan by Jansen of 1926 and onwards,
and a library of thesis work produced since 1962 (all in English)
and books from different periods form the Information and
Documentation Center of the Faculty. The center is also
accepted as being one of the three architectural culture centers
in Turkey. All services are open to the public.
Our Research efforts are reorganized around the ‘Faculty of
Architecture Research, Design and Planning Center’ (MATPUM)
with Research Units ranging from theoretical research to
profesional consultancy services to building science experiments
and ‘branding’. The Research Center has a separate building
on the reseach strip of the campus. (www.matpum.com).
In order to support our research and education efforts we are
transforming our workshops into design research laboratories.
They are being organized around the areas of, ‘virtual design’,
‘animation’, environmental physics’ and ‘solid modelling’.
The Faculty already enjoys most up-to-date workshops and a
printing press which not only prints our journal but has printed a
good collection of some 300 books all written by our staff since
1962.
Faculty cooperation with industry, private sector and NGO’s are
developing in a very healthy manner. Our staff act as public
specialists for a significant number of court cases, most of which
are very important in terms of public impact. Some of our
research activity is about helping the local authorities on
environmental issues, on policy making, crisis and hazard
management issues and above all in strategic spatial planning.
Our alumni, now around 6000 graduates, are organized
within the new Faculty of Architecture Alumni Association
(www.omim.org.tr). The Association as an NGO is providing
consultancy services for the public and the private sectors.
5
In 2010 we shall be celebrating the fiftieth year of our first
graduates, and looking at the way we are now organized, we
can say that our next fifty years looks more multi-dimensional,
multi-modal and multi-disciplinary in terms of the knowledge we
are going to process and in terms of the public, private
and non-governmental sectors as well as the national and
international bodies we are going to work with.
All this means that we are open and looking forward to meeting
and working together with those ‘students, teachers and
researchers of architecture, planning and design’ who would
like to share our basic attitudes and who would like to develop
new mutual value systems in the related areas of knowledge and
practice as well as the regions they are set or meant to influence
and would like to ask good questions and try to do the most for
good answers and best practice.

general information
The Department of Architecture (the first department
established at METU in 1956) offers undergraduate and
graduate degrees. The four-year undergraduate study grants
the Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Students have the
opportunity to follow minor programs in different areas like
business administration, building technology, structure, and
industrial design. Summer practices carried out each summer
throughout the period of study ensure that students are
introduced to building and professional practice in the field, on
construction sites and in architectural offices. Graduate
programs of the department offer the degrees of M.Arch. and
Ph.D. in Architecture, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Building Science,
M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Restoration and Preservation of Historical
Monuments, M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Architecture and
M.Sc. in Computational Design and Fabrication Technologies
in Architecture, which is an International Joint Master Degree
Program with TUDelft, leading towards a dual diploma. The
department also offers two undergraduate minor programs in
Conservation and Architectural Culture. The department, which
has been employing visiting professors from abroad since its
inception, continues its international relations through lectures,
student exchange programs and collaborative projects,
especially by actively taking place in ERASMUS and
ERASMUS-MUNDUS student and staff exchange programs.
The department is a member of the European Association of
Architectural Education (EAAE) and International Council for
Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB).

CITY and REGIONAL PLANNING
general information
Established in 1961, the Department of City and Regional
Planning at METU is the oldest and one of the largest schools
of planning in Turkey. With more than 2,000 graduates and
about 400 undergraduate and graduate students today, the
Department has played a key role not only in planning
education but also in the development of urban research in
Turkey. The Department offers a 4-year undergraduate degree
in City and Regional Planning in the last two years of which,
students are oriented to one of four modules according to their
areas of interest (Urban Policy, Urban and Regional Economic

research interests and facilities
Industrial design is a practice mainly concerned with the
creation of products that satisfy human needs by integrating
qualities such as ease of use, cultural and symbolic values,
market appeal and safety, and to develop the concepts
embodying such qualities for manufacture. The role of industrial
desigers is to develop products that we frequently come across
in daily life that we choose from among many alternatives and
that respect our quality of life and our environment. Creative
and innovative design products that designers bring forth
contribute to making our lives easier and enriching our
experences. These products may range from electrical
household appliances, cooking ware, mobile phones,
wristwatches, office furniture systems, lighting units, city furniture
to transport vehicles.
46
The industrial designer contributes to various stages of product
development such as defining needs, responding to needs in the
form of new products or making changes in existing products
and ensuring the recycling of products once they have
completed their life cycles. The industrial designer also makes
sure that the design process takes into account manufacturers'
considerations related to production, cost, market share and
target market, as well as cultural values, aesthetic preferences,
product safety and ease of use.
METU’s Department of Industrial Design uses the facilities and
services offered within the Faculty of Architecture’s Computing
Labs and Documentation Unit. These included computer aided
design, image processing, multimedia presentations, desktop
publishing, data analysis, printing and reproduction. For model
making, the Faculty workshops for wood, metal, plastics, and
ceramics are used as well as rapid-prototyping facilities.

SUMMER CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE
general information
METU Department of Architecture organizes for its students in
the 1st year a construction summer practice as a requirement
of the “Arch 190 Summer Practice in Construction and
Surveying”. This summer practice entails each time the
construction of a small-scale structure in a rural settlement.
Arch 190 Summer Practice has a multidimensional function: It
gets the students of architecture acquainted with construction
activity and materials; it gets the students have an
acquaintance with the rural regions where a great percentage
of Turkey's population live and contributes to the community in
the form of a built facility for public use or through a
community research.

November 22-24 , 2006
There have been significant advances in art and aesthetics in
Turkey. However, discussions, criticisms and views could not be
brought to a common ground; the assets could not be made
thoroughly accessible for all potential contributors. Turkish
Congress of Aesthetics aims to discover these assets, to
constitute a platform for communication among artists and
scholars, and hence to contribute to our esthetical knowledge.
Turkish Congress of Aesthetics had also been an occasion to
prepare philosophers, researchers and artists from Turkey and
abroad for the XVII. International Congress of Aesthetics, that
was held in the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, 9-13
July, 2007.
Organized by SANART, METU Department of Philosophy,

MANAGING MASS TOURISM, URBAN CONSERVATION AND
QUALITY OF LIFE IN HISTORIC CENTRES
Tourism in historic cities is continuously increasing following
the global trends in the tourist industry. Tourism has played a
certain role in promoting public awareness towards the historic
built environments and provided the historical centres with the
necessary resources for conservation. However, the negative
impacts of mass tourism on the conservation of cultural
heritage, and the impoverishment of historic places in terms of
their civic values is evident. The planning and conservation
policies in many historic cities continue to be fragmented and
to ignore environmental and social issues as a result of undue
focus on the short term economic advantages of tourism. In
this workshop, the risks that historic centres are subjected to
have been investigated on an international comparative and
interdisciplinary basis, in relation with urban, conservation and
tourist policies. The workshop is the kick off event of an
international project supported by the EU Culture Programme
(2007-2013).

BLACK SEA STUDIES SYMPOSIUM, 16th -17th of April, 2004
Archaeology is a field of study which prospers through communication and
interdisciplinary work. However, many archaeological study in Turkey
remains as thesis study and reaches only to a limited circle without getting
a chance to be published, although the output of studies and results of
research in any field should be shared with other scholars as well as anyone
interested in the field. The Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology of
the Middle East Technical University in Ankara organized a graduate
symposium entitled “Black Sea Studies Symposium” in April 2004 with this
ideal. During this symposium, numerous universities from all over Turkey
have contributed and a wonderful academic environment and cooperation
developed which demonstrated the necessity of such platforms for young
scholars.

THE ASWA VII, ARCHAEOZOOLOGY FOR THE SOUTHWEST ASIA
INTERNATIONAL MEETING, 1st – 4th of June 2004
The Archaeozoology of Southwest Asia and Adjacent Areas (ASWA [AA])
Working Group was formed during the 1990 ICAZ International
Conference in Washington D.C. It aims is to promote communication
between researchers working on faunal remains from sites in western Asia
and adjacent areas. One of its practices for meeting this aim is to organize
regular biennial international conferences.
The ASWA VII Archaeozoology for the Southwest Asia International Meeting
was held at Ankara, 1st – 4th of June 2004 at the premises of METU. It
lasted for four days, the first three devoted to presentations of papers and
the last to a field trip at Çatalhöyük. Posters submitted to the conference
were in exhibition for the three days of the event. The first day included
speeches on animal bone remains recovered from excavations in Turkey.
The second day was given to papers on methodology of archaeozoology
and the third day to papers on materials recovered from excavations in
other countries in the region.
MARMARA STUDIES SYMPOSIUM, 27th of April, 2007
The second of our mini graduate symposium series was held on April 27th,
2007 at the Middle East Technical University. Studies on the archaeology,
history, art history and geography of the Marmara Region were presented at
this symposium which also provided a great opportunity for us to publish
the second of the Settlement Archaeology Series. The symposium was not
only incredibly diverse in terms of subject matter, but also the papers
extended over a very long period of time.
STUDIES IN SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA GRADUATE SYMPOSIUM,
30th of April-1st of May, 2009
As the Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology of the Middle East
Technical University, our Graduate Symposium designed in a regional
framework began in 2004 with Black Sea Studies and continued in 2007
with Marmara Studies. This year, the symposium aimed at bringing together
young scientists working on topics relating to the Southeastern part of
Anatolia in the fields of archaeology, history, architectural history, art history,
anthropology and other supporting fields. The objective of the symposium
has not only been to create an environment where graduate students freely
share their research but also to provide an opportunity for them to meet
other fellow graduate students in their field and actively contribute to
academic life.

>“Spaces / Times / Peoples: Patronage and Architectural History”
2009
The Graduate Program in Architectural History in Department of Architecture at Middle East Technical University organizes a series of graduate
symposiums, open to graduate students and researchers who have recently
completed their Ph.D. studies. The symposium series, which began with the
Spaces / Times / Peoples of the Ottoman, Republic, and the Ancient Age
continued with the thematic meetings on Gender - Sexuality, and Identity Sense of Belonging. The sixth symposium which met on December 3-4,
2009 focused on the themes of “Spaces / Times / Peoples: Patronage
and Architectural History”. “Design” and “Patronage” have held a
significant place in researches on arts, architecture and architectural
history as those on other fields of social sciences studied through a
contextual basis on space, spatial perception, space production and
usage; with reference to artist - architect and patron relationship; and
studies considering the concepts of power, representation, imagery,
memory, gender, and identity. The symposium aimed to bring together
current researches on spaces, times, and peoples, and discussed the
consequent knowledge produced in architectural history, particularly
framed by the relation between architecture and patronage.

of 3-12 months at a university or higher education institution in
another participating country. ECTS (European Credit Transfer
System) facilitates academic recognition of periods of study in
partner institutions.
> Erasmus provides support for teachers giving courses,
generally short courses, as part of the official curriculum of a
partner university in another European country.
> Erasmus supports Intensive Programs (IP) in the form of
intensive courses that provide an additional option for teachers
and students, and offer them an opportunity to gain a
European perspective.
> Erasmus provides support for Thematic Networks (TN)
around a subject area or a specific topic as a platform for
analysis and discussion
Middle East Technical University joined Erasmus Program in
2004. Since then Faculty of Architecture signed bilateral

INTENSIVE PROGRAMS (IPs)
The intensive programs, European Union supported
initiatives in the framework of the Socrates schemes, aim
to promote exhange programs between universities. The
Faculty of Architecture has recently involved in three IPs,
namely Borderlines in Urban Space and Planning,
BRANCABIKA,
Spatial
Development
Planning.
BRANCABIKA was carried in partnership with the
Department of Architecture, while the partner of the other
IPs was the Department of City and Regional Planning.

SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
INTENSIVE PROGRAM
The Department of City and Regional Planning is one of the partners of
the Erasmus-Socrates intensive program (IP) Spatial Development
Planning. This program is carried out with the partnerships of University
of Milano - Bicocca/Department of Sociology and Social Research
(Italy), Middle East Technical University/Department of City and
Regional Planning (Turkey), University of Newcastle upon Tyne/School
of Planning, Architecture and Landscape (United Kingdom), University
of Sciences and Technologies of Lille/Faculty of Economics and Social
Science (France), Catholic University of Leuven/Department of
Architecture (Belgium), Utrecht University/Department of Human
Geography and Urban and Regional Planning (Holland), University of
Averio/Department of Social, Legal and Political Sciences (Portugal),
Mediterranean University of the City of Reggio Calabria/Department of
City, Landscape and Territory Planning (Italy), Harokopio
University/Department of Geography (Greece), University of the
Basque Country University of the Basque Country/Department of
Applied Economics (Spain), Royal Institute of Technology/Department
of City and Regional Planning (Sweden), Helsinki University of
Technology/ Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (Finland),
University of Naples Federico II/ Department of Social Sciences (Italy),
Sapienza University of Rome/Department of Territorial and Urban
Planning (Italy), Slovak University of Technology/ Department of
Architecture (Slovak Republic), Vienna University of Economics and
Business Administration/Department of of Urban and Regional
Development (Austria).
The main purpose of the IP on Spatial Development Planning is to
provide students with a learning experience on different planning
contexts, to become familiar with different instruments and approaches,
and to confront the problems and issues at hand. In particular, this
learning experience is focused on achieving a critical understanding of:
a) different urban redevelopment patterns and models;
b) methodologies to evaluate the economic and social impact of these
redevelopment projects at various scales;
c) conceptual tools for the analysis of governance dynamics.
Within this IP, two projects were prepared in 2007, related to two
transformation areas in Milan. Three students from the Department of
City and Regional Planni participated in the IP workshop together with
the coordinator Dr. Bahar Gedikli. Students worked in collaboration
with other participant students; while the coordinators assumed the
teaching duty. The first project involved the BICOCCA area, where the
University of Milano-Bicocca is also located. The University have
become a central part of a large redevelopment project informed by the
“knowledge-city model”, where higher-education, R&D and cultural
functions are mixed with advanced business services and high-quality
residential units. The analysis of this project enables a critical appraisal
of the development patterns set in motion by policies promoting the
Knowledge–Based Society and their impact in the metropolitan area.
The second project is on PARCO NORD, a 600 hectare green area
along the northern border of the city of Milan and including portions of
five minor municipalities of the metropolitan area. The park is managed
by a Consortium of the municipalities involved and constitutes a
successful example of collaboration at the inter-municipality level; while
connecting adjacent municipalities this park plays a large role in
providing opportunities for socially innovative initiatives which promote
an inclusive and active fruition of green spaces (for example, urban
vegetable gardens, well-equipped paths and facilities for educational
purposes).
In 2008, in addition to the two transformation areas studied in 2007,
Manufattura Tabacchi was chosen as the third project area; the
planning of a cultural district. Three students from our Department
participated in the project. Next IP workshop is going to be held in
Stockholm in 2010.

UES 08 . URBANITY, CULTURE, AND THE PLACING OF DIFFERENCE
URBAN EXCHANGE STUDIO .
UES‘08, organised by Middle East Technical University (METU)
and the University of Adelaide as a collaborative teaching
exercise in two graduate courses, and held in Ankara between
30 June and 14 July 2008, focused on the connection
between place and difference. Its main aims were to raise
students’ sensitivity to spatial and social difference in their
experience and design of constructed environments, and to
explore new modes of design education. UES‘08 brought 7
city planning, and 13 architecture students from METU
together with 22 architecture and landscape architecture
students from the University of Adelaide. Taking a holistic
approach, it focused on urban matters in the Hac Bayram
Area (HBA), the historical heart of Ankara, as an exercise to
explore innovative design strategies in architecture, landscape
architecture and urban design for the revitalization of the site.
Working as international and interdisciplinary teams of 5, 6
and 7 students produced 7 alternative projects with a number
of creative solutions for the problems of the HBA. Each project
team developed a master plan for the whole project site and
detailed design solutions for a specific part of the HBA.
