February 2013 - Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
Iniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club Happy New Year Alfa Style! Words by Fred Russell How we get so lucky each year, with perfect sunny weather on New Years Day? With another wonderful sunny day, we had 34 cars and 1 motorcycle gather for coffee, bathrooms, and getting warm in a Starbucks near Martha Lake. At our driver’s meeting, we chatted about the 102 miles we’ll drive, welcomed the addition of a number of Fiat and Ferrari club members, and talked about the baker’s dozen Gimmick Rally style questions to answer along the way. With plans in place, we headed out making our way eastward before dropping into the Snohomish River Valley to find a wonderful layer of fog. We wound our way past farms and the old Harvey Field airport, crossed the river and past numerous antique stores in Snohomish. Exiting the old town to the north we wandered to Machias for our stop at the Union 76 Gas Station and Country Store. Though not many needed gas, the real target was the bathroom which would have been a good plan had there been more than just one. The line was long and I spotted a few people doing a bit of dancing while waiting in line. Gathering at Starbucks Photo by Kim C Stopped in Machias At this point, we had already passed answers for five of the gimmick questions. An example or these would be “What street is Annie’s on?” with the store being Annie’s on First, you can bet it was on First. One of the other questions was “What is the third park rule for using the Centennial Trail?” The answer was to Clean Up Animal Waste. I wondered how clean Mount Pilchuck it needs to be? A nice shine perhaps? Clean enough to put on a coffee table? No matter… it’s the third rule. Mike & Steve (8C) follow Gordy & Pam (JrZ) Photo by Kim C Before we got back on the road, I realized that Steve Schaeffer was riding in Mike Leonetti’s Alfa 8cCompetizione. “I asked Mike if he could use a passenger…” said Steve. Mike being the nice guy he is, said yes and Steve played navigator while listening to the wonderful sounds of the 4.7 Inside this February 2013 issue… * * * * * New Year’s Drive …... pgs 1-5 President’s Column ….... pg 6 Feb Club Meeting …...……pg 7 Chili CookOff ………..….. pg 7 News ………...…….....….. pg 8 * * * * * Corsa 2013 ………….……. pg 9 Next events… Woodinville Tour ……… pg 10 * Club Meeting ……….......… Feb 12 Double M Ranch ……….. pg 11 * Chili CookOff …………….... Meanwhile Gordy and Pam enjoyed a cold drive in Gordy’s Alfa JrZ, after the heater fan stopped working. Once back under way, we headed north on Russell Road and Schwartzmiller Road following the scenic path of the Pilchuck River. The mountains, farms and fields looked nice, albeit a little chilly as we went. Next, we headed out of Granite Falls on the Jordan River Road where one of the painful gimmick questions was, “If Ernest hit a foul ball outside of the third base line, where would the ball land?”. Answer?... there was a baseball diamond next to the road with a fence line right by the third base line… the road beside that fence was Hemming Way. Painful, huh! After passing through Arlington and joining Hwy 9 we wandered alongside Lake McMurray, Big Lake, and Clear Lake on our way to Sedro Woolley. We passed the Nakashima Barn which is now the northern terminus of the Centennial Bike Trail that starts 30 miles south in Snohomish. The gambrel roofed barn used to belong to the Nakashima family with their 11 children. They were some of the first Japanese settlers in the area, and had to clear all the stumps The Pilchuck River with Three Fingers and Whitehorse Mtns behind one by one, from when the area was a shingle mill. In 1942, they were forced to sell the farm and move to the Tula Lake internment camp in California. They returned to the Seattle area after WWII and started successful businesses. Two of their children still live near Lake McMurray. We headed west out of Sedro Woolley and wandered Bow Hill Nakashima Barn Entering Sedro Woolley with a dusting of snow on Lyman Hill Road down onto the Skagit Flats and the towns of Bow, Edison, and Bayview on our way across to Anacortes for lunch. Our host, Fred Schueddekopp was waiting for us at his shop, Autostrada. There were approximately10 more cars that met us there. In all, Fred, his daughter Natalie, and the cook Chuck Landgraf fed over 80 of us with wonderful BBQ and more! One fun point was that this worked as the first chance to hand the Alfisti NWARC February 2013 newsletter page 2 New Year cont’d... Cars at Autostrada More Autostrada cars! We were surrounded by a great assortment of Alfas and if that wasn’t enough, Fred took us over to his hanger space nearby that houses a number of other race cars. Between food, raffle gifts, fun conversation and nice cars it was tough to leave. Our next stop was to drive back to Burlington where Ferrari 246 Dino joined along for the day. Wes & Rita Ingram hosted us at Ingram Enterprises. It was fun to hear Herb Sanborn trying to explain the inner workings of Spica fuel injection pumps in an easy way, while Wes talked about Alfa engines. If we had any room left there were plenty of desserts for us to enjoy on this great start to 2013. Choosing a raffle prize! Another GTA hidden under in the hanger. By Kim C. Fred sent me a reminder that I had a president’s article to write. Hey Fred, aren’t you missing a left side rocker panel trim piece of your Alfetta? Remind him of that everyone. (“It’s only a flesh wound. I’ve had worse.” Editor) Frozen Alfa I gotta admit, Fred did help me evaluate a late 1985 GTV6 from a local fella named Justin on behalf of Phil Overeyndr out in Colorado. Remember that cold weather we had just before the cold fog set in? That’s the weather we enjoyed with the red Alfa sitting in the shade, covered with thick frost. How does one evaluate paint when all you can see on the hood, roof, and deck lid is thick white ice? The hood was not latched down so we peered into the engine compartment looking for rust and anything unusual. We spotted a few light rust spots at the top of the shock towers but appeared to be superficial. I couldn’t drive a scribe through it so thought it was ok. Engine looked good and one of the two radiator fans were missing. We couldn’t initially get into either of the driver/passenger doors as they were frozen shut, and that’s with the owner trying to get in. Did manage to get the trunk open and pull the carpet. All looked good except for another rust spot in the right rear corner. Also didn’t seem bad enough to worry about and couldn’t punch holes through it with my scribe. The rear fender wells also checked out so all in all it was looking pretty good on the rust worries. After much fiddling Justin managed to get the driver’s side door open without leaving remains of a broken key in the lock from his efforts. The leather needed re-stitching but otherwise looked good. The dash had been pulled because of a laeky heater core (heat exchange radiator) and wasn’t ready to go back together yet. So definitely a project car with good prospects. I hear that later GTV6 style of Recaro seats (not the Milano Verde style) weren’t all that comfortable but wonder if an upholstery shop could make them better? Our seller went and fetched a battery (good idea keeping it warm in his apartment) and installed it. He said it hadn’t started in a month and I’m thinking with this cold weather the odds weren’t good. He went to cranking and it took a bit but the engine then started! Didn’t see a fog of oil smoke, only white water vapor cold cars always emit on frosty days. We didn’t push the engine much although rev'd it some but then shut it down after a bit as it was pumping water into a bucket on the passenger floor. Not bad, not bad I’d say. Tried getting that passenger door open but was still frozen shut. Oh well, seems ok for a 28 year old car. Would I buy it? Yeah, so I recommended Phil continue the possibility of purchase. It definitely needs some attention but what a nice canvas to begin working on. Did any of you Alfa drivers join the Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest club for their Saturday drive on the 28th? I hope so, Dillon had a basketball game and I couldn’t miss this 11year old scrapping it up with those other kids. I’ll be having more of that before his seasons out. If the turnout was anywhere near what we had for the New Years drive that makes for a fun event. Selling Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lancia Parts Since 1971 FREE CATALOG 1-800-788-4435 www.international-auto.com Another short thought; I was driving to work a couple of weeks ago in my ’89 Milano Verde, again during that cold snap before the fog bank settled in and was waiting my turn at the merge light to enter I-5 South. Ahead of me was a modern Fiat 500, always good to see, but in front of that car was an early 70’s Alfa Spider, with the top down! It was still dark outside! Was this guy a nutcase or a supreme Alfisti? Didn’t recognize the driver and couldn’t catch him in the heavy traffic. Hope to see him again and I thought it cool to have three Italian cars lined up doing the commuter grind to work. That’s all I can think of for now, so keep your Italian cars going so I can enjoy spotting them out in public. Test and tune for the folks at the Chrysler / Fiat offices I’d say. This helps keep the dream alive that the Alfa Romeo 4C will actually be sold in the U.S. later this year. Recent info is that the 1.7-liter turbocharged 4 cyl will have around 225-235 HP which is lower than the initial info of 270 HP with tons of torque. The transmission is targeted as the six-speed dual-clutch automatic so sorry, no traditional shift. The weight was initially quoted as less than 2000 pounds but changes have been made to materials used so the actual weight will be higher… hopefully not much above 2000 pounds. Production is still rumored to be 1000 each of coupes and spiders. Its all still just a waiting game but at least the photo above makes us think it could be real. Speaking of new Alfas we get in the USA, Mazda and Fiat officially confirmed that the Mazda-made Alfa Romeo Spider is due in 2015. Based on the next-generation Mazda MX-5 platform, and assembled at the Mazda plant in Hiroshima, the two cars will have "two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brandspecific roadsters featuring rearPhoto by KGP Photography wheel drive." The Alfa Romeo Spider will have an “Alfa” engine to go with the Alfa Romeo styling. The Mazda MX-5 is targeted to be a couple hundred pound lighter than the current car and should come with a long list of upgrade options. All of this is a great financial move and in many ways, long overdue. It will also be the first real production rear wheel drive Alfa Spider since the early 90s. No, there are no real photos yet. Our ever-vigilant member, Paul Affolter was reading the latest Vanity Fair, (I told him that was normal and that most men read that magazine.) when he spotted this image. He was rightfully concerned why they would cover the great lines and details on the car with fake leopard skin. Have you ever seen those way cool old Race Program Covers, often reprinted as posters? They were artistic and fun capturing a nearly lost time from long ago. They are great to frame, perhaps as a unique birthday gift. These cool people have gathered and scanned numerous covers. Check them out and support their efforts. www.progcovers.com NWARC February 2013 newsletter page 8 Vanity Fair 2013 Corsa Plans Take Shape! The Corsa Committee met twice in January and came away with great news. Mirko Freguia and Chris Benny have taken on the shared role of Co-Directors for the club’s Corsa side. They both have extensive experience with our events as trackmaster, instructor, student, and driver. As both of them have built racing Milano’s, they are excellent examples of what our Corsa program can create… impassioned Alfa track people. Thanks Mirko & Chris! We had a great discussion of capabilities, volunteers, limits, costs, and targets, enabling us to determine our scope of what the club should do for the 2013 track season. We limited our track events to one driving school and one lapping event. A number of members volunteered to support the events with advice, tech skills, hours, and whatever is needed. Thanks to all in attendance and to those who took on tasks! Now, with the Corsa season in the planning stage, we are working towards the date of June 29th for a lapping day at The Ridge Motorsports Track! If we can finalize all the details, this will be a great chance for us to drive at the new and wonderful local track. Since this is still in the planning stage, we will get a confirmation out as soon as we can. You won’t want to miss out, plus it can serve as a tune up for the AROC National track events just over a week later. But this will be much more than a cool lapping day, we are putting plans together for a nice wandering drive to the track, a car show event, and picnic gathering… in other words, Gita e’Corsa. Many of us remember these great events from 1997-2000 that were all about our club members, and Alfa Romeos. The plans for the Driving School are still in the works but we recognize how important these events have been over the years. Car control saves lives, adds fun to life, and may spare an Alfa Romeo from a premature end. We’ll get the details out as soon as they are finalized. Words by Fred Russell Photos from the Internet Though the State Patrol officer was wrong, I decided not to argue about my speed entering the line for the Kingston Ferry. I simply smiled and agreed that 40 mph was a bit fast. I was only doing 30 mph, though an Alfa always sounds a bit faster than it really goes. I made the ferry along with Steve Schaeffer who was only 3 cars ahead of me. Onboard the ferry we found another couple Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest (FEN) members heading to the Port Angeles gathering at the Double M Ranch; a restoration business for Morris Minors. The crossing was smooth, quick, and uneventful… afterall, I didn’t have a speeding ticket to complain about. As we disembarked, Cindy and I met back up with Steve driving his Japanese Alfa and followed a wandering route of backroads around Kitsap Peninsula past nice farms, big homes, and plenty of greenery. We crossed the Hood Canal Floating Bridge and continued wandering along our route enjoying great views out onto Hood Canal, then Admiralty Inlet and both Indian and Marrowstone Islands. We got a little backwards as we approached the “Ranch” when the leader turned Right when he should’ve turned Left. We turned back around and followed the strategically parked Morris Minors down the lane to the right location. FEN had organized this tour and many of the people had driven straight there so over 30 fun cars were already there as we arrived. The Double M Ranch is a great facility where the owner, Rob, and his couple person crew try to “put tired Morris’ back on the road.” From the look of it, they do that really well. They will repair, or restore your Morris Minor to whatever condition you’d like. If you don’t have one, they can help you out by offering one of there numerous cars. They accumulated over 60 cars so far. Some get parted and the parts are neatly organized on shelves nicer than I usually see. Many cars get started on restoration with targets usually being a fun driver car with the larger 1275 cc engines and front disk brakes. Rob can build show level cars with exact engine matches and all details as original but that costs much more. The Morris Minors came in multiple body styles and they can help you with any of them… 2 or 4 door. Woodie wagons. Trucks. Vans. Anything you’d like is an option. He buys old Morris Minors from all over the world and also sells to everywhere as well. One oddity is they will also convert these cars into Electric Cars if you’d like. Since most electric cars still look dorky, why not consider something with more fun looks? Steve jumped in one and went for a ride… a rather quiet ride at that. A few other NWARC members joined in for the visit to the Double M Ranch. For more info about this wonderful place, go to their web page at: doublemmorrisminorrestoration.com or call Rob at 360 385 6121. Our next stop was lunch in Port Townsend where Steve, Cindy, and I met up with George Baumann and his wife and daughter. After a wonderful meal, we walked over to Bergstrom’s Antiques with all of their automotive related items. That was a dangerous place and I walked away with my arms filled with old books, magazines, and oddities. Luckily, there are a lot of great stores to wander in Port Townsend so we wandered most of the afternoon. At one point Steve and I found a small out of the way wood workers shop where the craftsman worked on hand carving an amazing bedframe unlike anything we’d ever seen before. The intricate patterns they were recreating were from an old Norwegian church the artist had seen while the frame function and design was all his own. As the light was fading we headed back towards home. One funny part was that my car was low on fuel and I decided it would be okay to push my luck… afterall, I had a rescuing hero following me. That hero got to earn his keep because as we passed through Port Gamble, I ran the car out of gas. Cindy waited patiently as Steve shuttled me back 4 miles to get the needed gallon. Back on the road we went happily along, even making it on a ferry, this time without getting yelled at for speeding! It was a great day and very relaxed event. My thanks go out to FEN and all their efforts. NWARC February 2013 newsletter page 11 NWARC February 2013 newsletter page 12 Classified Ads Cars & Parts For Sale!
