Abernethy Physical Education Center
The Julius W. Abernethy Physical Education Center, home of Catawba’s basketball teams, is one of the finest on-campus athletic facilities in the state of North Carolina. It was named after the late Julius W. Abernethy of Newton, N.C., and was dedicated on
September 26, 1970. Basketball games are played in the center’s Goodman Gymnasium, named in honor of Enoch A. Goodman of
Salisbury. In October of 2002, the floor was named in honor of former head coach, Sam Moir, who guided Catawba to 546 wins over
34 seasons.
The Indians, under head coach Sam Moir, properly opened the new facility with a 120-82 triumph over the visiting Pioneers of
Tusculum College on November 27, 1970. Since that game, Catawba basketball teams have compiled an impressive 437-171 record
for homes games, for a winning percentage of .717. The Tribe has recorded two 23-game home winning streaks in the past six years.
The building, which cost more than $1.8 million to build, has a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball, and now has a value of
about $5 million. A beautiful maple hardwood playing surface was installed in December 1990. The facility is also used extensively for intercollegiate volleyball, student activities, civic events, concerts and various athletic camps during the summer months.
The College’s Athletic and Physical Education offices, as well as classrooms, are located on the upper level. Situated on the lower
level is the Allen S. Johnson, Jr. Swimming Pool, three racquetball courts, the Meyer Auxiliary Gym complete with an indoor batting cage, various student and athletic dressing accommodations, and the Lofland Strength Training Center.
PLAN NOW FOR
2013 CATAWBA COLLEGE
SUMMER CAMPS!
Brochures will be distributed after January 1.
Call 704-637-4473 for more information.

Jim Baker - Head Coach
Jim Baker begins his 19th season as the head coach of the
men’s basketball program at Catawba. During his tenure, Baker
has guided the Indians to the NCAA II Tournament nine times.
His teams have won nearly 65% of their games and have an
impressive home record of 192-67 (74%). Catawba has a 105-67
record in games decided by five points or less under Baker. Under
Baker, Catawba has produced three conference Players of the Year
and two All-Americans. The Indians have graduated 60 of 64 seniors under Baker.
In 2009-10, Catawba won its sixth SAC Championship under
Baker and advanced to the SAC Tournament title game for the
third year in a row. The Indians had won back-to-back SAC
Tournament titles in 2008 and 2009. Catawba has won a league
or tournament championship in six of the last seven seasons.
In 2006-07, Baker was voted SAC Coach of the Year for the fifth
time as Catawba won the league title and earned a spot in the
NCAA Regional Tournament. In 2004-05, Baker earned SAC
Coach of the Year honors as the Indians claimed the conference
title and advanced to the NCAA II Tournament. In 2004, Catawba
became the lowest seed (#7) to win the league tournament, earning a regional tournament berth. After a 25-5 season and a third
South Atlantic Conference title in 2001, Baker was named league
Coach of the Year.
Baker was named SAC and NCAA II Region Coach of the Year
in 1998, after Catawba posted a 25-6 record. He also earned SAC
Coach of the Year honors in 1996, after he guided the Indians to
their first conference title since 1983. His 16 victories in his first
season was the most ever for a first-year basketball coach at
Catawba. He has a 319-181 record over his first 17 seasons and
ranks second all-time in coaching victories at Catawba.
Baker came to Catawba from Virginia Military Institute, where
he had been an
assistant coach for
two seasons. He
also had NCAA
Division I experience as an assistant
at Virginia Tech
(1989-91)
and
Davidson (198189). Baker came to
Catawba in June
1993, as an assistant coach during Sam Moir’s final campaign as head coach. Moir
retired in May 1994, ending a great 34-year career at Catawba.
Baker, a dean’s list student at Catawba before graduating in
1978, played for Moir from 1975-78. He transferred from UNCCharlotte and was a part of two 20-win seasons at Catawba. He
was a member of the 1976-77 Carolinas Conference Championship team and three of his former teammates, Benny Callahan,
Eric Harris and Herman Miles are in the Catawba Sports Hall of
Fame.
Baker began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Moir
in 1978-79 and at Wingate the next year, while earning a master’s
degree in human development and learning at UNC-Charlotte. He
was also an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey (1980-81).
Baker worked under Bobby Hussey at Davidson, Frankie Allen
at Virginia Tech and Joe Cantafio at VMI. At Davidson, Baker was
part of a program which graduated 25 of 26 student athletes. In
addition, the Wildcats put together back-to-back 20-win seasons
(1986-87) and appeared in the 1986 NCAA Southeast Regional.
While Baker was at Virginia Tech, the Hokies became only the
third team in Metro Conference history to sweep both Memphis
State and Louisville in the same year. At VMI, Baker was responsible for recruiting, scouting, practice and bench coaching, public
speaking, summer camps and scheduling.
All of VMI’s seniors graduated during Baker’s stay there and he
was part of an outstanding recruiting class in 1992-93, which saw
three freshmen make the starting lineup.
In addition to editing and publishing a monthly basketball
newsletter (“Time Out”), Baker has published four booklets:
“Power Post Play,” “Striving for Excellence,” and “The Best of Time
Out, Books One and Two.” Baker released a one of a kind basketball CD-Rom “The Best of Time Out”.
Baker’s ties to the international players in his program come
from doing camps and clinics abroad. He has conducted both
camps and clinics in Belgium, France, Iceland, Luxembourg,
Barbados and Costa Rica. He has also served as the U.S. advisor to
the Belgium Women’s Olympic basketball team.
Baker comes from a strong sports family. Both his mother and
father were outstanding athletes and his dad, Walt, coached him
at North Rowan High School where he graduated in 1974. The
field house at North Rowan is named in his dad’s honor. His
brother, Chip, is a longtime assistant baseball coach at Florida
State.
Baker and his wife, the former Tina Waters, reside in Concord.
They have four children, Jamie (14), Madison (11) and Hannah (10)
and Jacob (5).

Bill Haggerty - Assistant Coach
Bill Haggerty is entering his 26th season as an assistant coach for the Catawba men’s basketball
team. In addition to his duties under coach Baker, Haggerty assists in the coorrdination and promotion of Catawba’s summer basketball camps, and has been active in securing basketball game sponsorships. Haggerty also serves as head coach for the Catawba cross country teams. Twice he has
guided the men to a tie for second place and has had a runner qualify for the NCAA II Nationals four
times. He is the first Catawba coach to be associated with two programs involved in NCAA Regionals
in the same year, as the men’s basketball team also made the NCAAs in 2000-01.
Prior to his current position, Haggerty coached the women’s
basketball team at Catawba (1984-87), turning a near-winless situation into a respectable program. Haggerty’s best year with the
Lady Indians was 1985-86, when he led Catawba to a 17-15
record, setting 30 school records in the process. He joined coach
Sam Moir on the men’s basketball staff in July 1987. A 1979 Catawba graduate, Haggerty took the
women’s basketball position at Catawba after serving as recreation director for Jefferson
Township, NJ. He was also assistant coach in basketball, football and softball at Jefferson
Township High School. He was born in New York City’s Bronx, but his family moved to Oak
Ridge, NJ, during his childhood. Haggerty graduated form Jefferson Township High School, where
he was a runner on a state championship cross country team and played basketball. He later
returned to his former school to coach another cross country state champion.
Before transferring to Catawba, Haggerty attended Morris County Community College in New
Jersey, where he also ran cross country and earned All-America honors. He ran in numerous
marathons, including Boston and New York City. Haggerty earned a bachelor’s degree in physical
education at Catawba.
Haggerty resides in Advance with his wife, Carolyn, who returned to school and graduated
from Catawba in 1994. Their family includes a daughter, Amanda, and her husband Jeff with children Maya and Jonah, a son, Jared, and his wife Amie, with a daughter Emma, and a son, Travis.
Brian Graves
Volunteer Assistant Coaches
Assistant Coach
Brian Graves begins his first season as an assistant
coach with the Catawba College men’s basketball program
in 2012-13. He has returned to his alma mater after four
year of playing professional basketball since his graduation. In 2011, he coached the junior varsity at Heritage
High School to a 16-2 mark.
Graves graduated from Catawba in 2007 with a degree in sports management.
While at Catawba, Graves was a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference performer and was named All-Southeast Region as a senior. As a freshman he was
named to the SAC All-Tournament squad in helping the Indians to the title.
Catawba advanced to the NCAA II Regionals in three of Graves’ four seasons
and he helped the team to conference championships during his sophomore and
senior seasons. Graves became a 1,000 point scorer in his career, currently ranking 22nd with 1,387 points. He stands third all-time with 600 assists and shares
the school mark with 15 assists in one game. Graves produced the second highest assist season as a senior with 203. He also ranks third all-time in steals.
After graduation, Graves played in Germany with the Grevenbroich Elephants
and helped the team move from the Regional League to the 2nd Division. He was
named All-League both years. Graves also spent a year with the Vermont Frost
Heaves of the PBL and most recently was team MVP in 2011-12 with the Virginia
True Hope Trailblazers.
Graves, a native of Newport News, VA, currently resides in Salisbury. He has
a son, Brian Jr., born in June of 2011.

ADMISSION
Inquiries regarding admission to Catawba College are
always warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining
the Catawba community, you should apply for admission
anytime after your sixth semester of high school.
Catawba follows the usual guidelines for “rolling
admissions” and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting applications. Applying early will ensure an early
response from the college.
In your application, you are asked to provide a wide
variety of information relating to your academic and cocurricular background. This information is used to help
determine your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the Catawba community.
You must complete a minimum of 16 units of high
school course work, 12 of which should be in academic
subjects. The following college preparatory course work is
strongly recommended: four units of English; three units of
mathematics (Algebra I or above); three units of
Laboratory Science; three units of Social Science; and two
units of foreign language.
Your admission to Catawba also will be evaluated by
class rank, grade point average, SAT or ACT examination
scores, and academic course selection.
Arrangements for visits to the Catawba campus may be
made by calling 1-800-CATAWBA, or by writing the Office
of Admissions, Catawba College, 2300 W. Innes Street,
Salisbury, NC, 28144.
The coaches are available by writing the Athletic
Department or by telephone:

ACADEMIC LIFE
Catawba College is dedicated to helping students
reach their highest potential.
Blending liberal studies with
career preparation, the college offers the Bachelor of
Arts, Bachelor of Science,
Bachelor of Fine Arts,
Bachelor of Business
Administration and Master
of Education degrees.
COLLEGE ORIENTATION
Catawba officials want to do everything they can to
help new students succeed, and that means more than
making good grades. It means adjusting well. It means
learning to live
and work with
others in an environment that is
new.
To ease the transition to college
life, Catawba offers
an orientation session before the
opening of the fall
term for all firsttime freshmen and
transfer students.
One of the primary
strengths of the program is that students
have contact with an
advisor from the first
day they arrive on
campus. And that relationship continues in
small, twice-weekly
classes during the entire first semester.
SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
The South Atlantic Conference is a group of
ten church-related colleges of similar size and
athletic philosophy. As an all-sports conference, the league has grown into one of the
premier small-college athletic conferences in
the nation.
The 1993-94 year was extremely special in that the conference became fully affiliated with the NCAA Division II
and is now eligible for national championships opportunities in all of its 14 sponsored sports.
NCAA DIVISION II
The National Collegiate Athletic
Association is the organization through which
the nation’s colleges and universities speak
and act on athletic matters at the national level.
It is a voluntary association of more than 1,000
institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals
devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate
athletics.
