Lambley Nursery BULB CATALOGUE 2011 Lambley Nursery and Gardens www.lambley.com.au We are now importing the best varieties of garden bulbs that the Dutch bulb industry has to offer. It is a long and expensive process. Some of these imported varieties are in this catalogue and many are being offered for the first time in Australia. Some varieties are in short supply so it would be an idea to order promptly. The bulbs in this catalogue are for summer dry climates and are not suited to coastal NSW north of Sydney nor most areas of Queensland, Most need a reasonably cold winter and a dry summer to do well. They do not need lifting each year and are best left to increase in the garden. BULBS FROM THIS CATALOGUE will be available from the beginning of February until the end of March. WEBSITE The Lambley website has a full catalogue of the plants which we have in stock. David Glenn‟s Garden Notes can also be found there. www.lambley.com.au PACKING We take a great deal of care in growing, selecting, packing and dispatching our plants. Our policy is to replace plants which do not arrive in good condition. If there is a problem please let us know within 24 hours as we will not be able to take responsibility after that time. DELIVERY TIME We will get plants out as quickly as possible but we do get a lot of orders in at once so there may be some delay. Let us know if you need plants delivered by a certain time. Brian Matthews, in his monograph The Crocus, writes “In parts of Montenegro and Hercigovina I have seen it growing so thickly as to colour the woodlands, like English bluebells.” I grow it in the dry garden under salvias and toad flax which are cut to the ground in May. This crocus flowers in July. It self sows in the garden and as it flowers in three years from seed it soon makes a decent show especially as the bulbs increase freely too. Over the years European gardeners have selected quite a few different forms, six of which we offer here. All are beautiful. 6 for $8.00 25 for $30.00 50 for $50.00 ‘Barr’s Purple’ Large rich lilac purple flowers. ‘Lilac Beauty’ This has starry pale lilac flowers ‘Roseus’ The most nearly pink of all crocus “.....almost the colour of peach blossom” also described as “.....cyclamen rose with a silver sheen” ‘Ruby Giant’ A rich purple-red form with a lighter throat. ‘Whitewell Purple’ Purplish mauve flowers. ‘Yalta’ A large flowered Janis Ruksans selection with “silvery shaded outer petals and beautifully contrasting purple inner petals” Yalta 12 Barr’s Purple Lilac Beauty Roseus Ruby Giant Whitewell Purple Yalta 13 Crocus chrysanthus Crocus chrysanthus The cultivars of this species are amongst the most handsome of all Crocus. They produce several flowers to each bulb which helps to give them a long season. Earlier flowering than the Dutch bred C. vernus hybrids, they are beautiful in form and intense in colour often with exquisite feathering on the petals 3 for $7.00 10 for $20.00 ‘Ard Schenk’ is a vigorous and freely increasing pure white flowered cultivar. ‘Blue Pearl’ is a swooningly beautiful crocus with pale blue inner petals, a yellow throat and lavender blue outer petals. ‘Cream Beauty’ has rich cream flowers ‘Fuscotinctus’ has flowers of bright yellow with violet feathering on the backs of the petals. New import. ‘Gypsy Girl’ exceptionally good doer with bright yellow flowers and rich maroon feathering. ‘Prins Claus’ has startling flowers, white interiors with purple black white edged exterior markings. Blue Pearl 14 Ard Schenk Blue Pearl Cream Beauty Fuscotinctus Gypsy Girl Prins Claus 15 Giant Dutch Crocus Selections Giant Dutch Crocus Selections These varieties have giant flowers almost the size of tulips. They flower late winter and early spring and will cope with more summer watering than most other crocus although they grow happily in dry conditions. They all make good pot plants and can be brought inside when they start to flower. 10 for $12.00 100 for $100.00 Crocus vernus ‘Flower Record’ Glossy violet flowers. Crocus vernus ‘Grand Maitre’ Violet blue Flowers. Crocus vernus ‘Joan of Arc’ Pure white with contrasting yellow stamens. Crocus vernus ‘Pickwick’ Creamy white flowers with purple feathering. But these horticultural triumphs, the result of centuries of assiduous breeding in the bulb fields of Holland, are not the only tulips that grow in the garden here at Lambley. Wild tulips, native to the Central Asian steppes, the hills of Crete, the olive groves of France, the ranges of Kurdistan, the Taurus Mountains, the Hindu Kush, even north Africa, and all the wild places between, have made themselves at home here. Some species have settled into the dry garden and others have naturalised in rough grass. No matter where we grow them they are amongst the most admired and coveted plants in the garden. All the species listed below need much the same conditions in the garden. They prefer cool winters and hot dry summers and won‟t do at all in subtropical climates . At Lambley we plant the bulbs under perennials which are either low growing or cut back to the ground during winter as tulips make their foliage growth during winter and flower during the first half of spring. I personally think that the wild tulips do better if the soil they are growing in is covered by other plants during the heat of summer. We leave all the wild tulips in the garden and lift them only when they become congested which is about every ten years or so. Some groups of bulbs have been in the same spot for fifteen years. Our soil is naturally very acid, Ph 4.5 to 5, so we add dolomite lime or ground limestone every so often. Tulipa eichleri This tulip, from north west Iran and adjacent countries, is one of the largest flowered and showiest of all the wildlings. Anna Pavord writes in her book „The Tulip‟ that it has “enormou s, showy flowers ....... a clear bright crimson -scarlet with a brilliant sheen on the inner surface of the petals.” A black basal blotch is margined with yellow. This evolutionary wonder is held on 30cm tall stems. Lambley recently imported this species from Holland. 30cm x 10cm. 3 for $12.00 10 for $35.00 27 Tulipa greigii Tulipa greigii This This variable variable species, species, from from the the wild wild forbidding forbidding mountains mountains thof of Central Central Asia, Asia, was was th century. It is stoloniferous running around freely when happy. It needs a good summer baking to flower well. The bulbs in our own garden often have three flowers to a stem. The green hanging buds opening to large upward facing purple-pink, yellow throated flowers. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa tarda White tipped yellow stars on short stems, generally about 10cm tall, are produced sometimes half a dozen or more to each bulb. This tulip grows on “...rocky slopes in the Tien Shan.” It is very easy to grow in the garden. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa turkestanica Whilst the individual flowers are quite small each bulb produces such an abundance of them that this easy tulip should be in every garden. White, yellow throated stars open quite early in September. Our form grows to about 20cm tall but flowering height varies with the season and the garden. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa urumiensis A dwarf flowered species which was first collected from the hills surrounding Lake Urmia in north western Iran about seventy years ago. It has never been collected again. Easy to grow, it is related to the much taller T. sylvestris and has the same green back to its clear yellow flowers. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 30 Tulipa vvedenskyi ‘Tangerine Beauty‟ Endemic to the western Tien Shan mountain range where it was first found growing south-east of Tashkent, in hills above the Angren River valley, during the early 1950s. The exceptionally large, orange-red flowers are produced on 20cm tall stems. It has grown well in our thyme lawn for the last two years and is a good increaser. A spacing of a minimum 15cm is needed and this tulip does best in a sunny spot which dries out during summer. 3 for $12.00 10 for $36.00 Urginea maritima Sea Squill A bulb from Mediterranean sea shores which flowers with us during late summer and early autumn. We‟ve had it growing in a neglected paddock where it has thrived without water for all of the past years of drought. The Sea Squill makes stiff thick strong stems up to a metre tall tightly packed on the upper half with two or three hundred ivory white stars. The winter spring foliage is handsome as well. Needs a sunny spot and let the bulb dry off in summer. $10.00 each Large bulbs. 31
