I taught 3year-olds, and learned a number of lessons during my employment. The first lesson was that when a 3year-old says he needs Lyn Hester to go to the bathroom, Vice President INTEGRIS Marketing and he needs to go NOW! Community Health Improvement We took frequent bathroom breaks, but sometimes bladders are not as attuned to schedules as we would like, so from time to time one of my little charges would need to be excused during class. One morning I was teaching Play Doh (an important life skill), when Richie (one of my youngest 3-year-olds) raised his hand and asked to go to the bathroom. Of course I said yes and off he went. When he returned he walked up to me, zipper zipped but snap undone, and mumbled something completely foreign to me. I have to be august 2009 honest and tell you that listening to many preschoolers talk is how I envision my dog feels when I talk to him. “Blah, blah, blah, TREAT, blah, blah, blah, BYE BYE, blah, blah, blah, NO.” I’m only vaguely understanding about every third word, so I have no idea what Richie is saying to me, but it seemed pretty obvious; I mean his snap was undone. So, I snapped him up and he sat down. A few minutes later he came back to me and told me he had to go to the bathroom. OK, maybe he didn’t finish … it happens. So off he went. When he returned to class he walked to my desk, mumbled something, I smiled, snapped his pants and sat him down again. It wasn’t long until Richie was squirming around in his seat (one of the “tells” we had learned about). “Richie”, I said, “Do you have to go to the bathroom?” His head bobbed up and down enthusiastically. “Didn’t you already go?” I asked. This time he shook his head no, just as enthusiastically. “But why not?” Then, as clear as a bell he yells, “Because I can’t get my pants unzipped!” And that is why Richie became a gym teacher and only wears pants with an elastic waist. Peripheral Artery Disease Getting the Most from Your Doctor Visits The most common type of peripheral vascular disease is peripheral artery disease, which affects nearly 8 million Americans. Many people mistake the symptoms of PAD for something else, which can lead to serious consequences. Join interventional cardiovascular Imran virk, M.D. specialist, Imran Virk, M.D., to learn more about PAD and the treatment options available. The presentation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center in the Medical Office Building, 4200 S. Douglas Ave., Ste. B-10. Reservations required. The care you receive from your doctor and the confidence you have in him or her depends on many factors, including how well you communicate with each other and how well-prepared you are when you visit the doctor’s office. Be an active participant in your Earlene Posselt, M.D. health care. Join Earlene Posselt, M.D., internal medicine, for this interactive session and see exactly what the doctor herself recommends. Caring and Supporting One Another... FROM THE JAMES L. HALL JR. CENTER FOR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT From The Director The Benefits of Happy As we continue to learn more about the relationship between our minds, our bodies and our spirits, studies continue to demonstrate that being happy makes a difference. It impacts our well being and plays a powerful role in our overall physical health. Jay Gosney of Yahoo! shares some ideas about taking care of self and seeking happiness. 1. Raise your activity level to pump up your energy. Pace when you’re on the phone. Put more energy into your voice. Take a brisk 10-minute walk inside or … Karrie Oertli 2. Take a walk outside. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals Administrative Director James L. Hall Jr. Center that improve mood. For an extra boost, get your sunlight first thing in the morning. for Mind, Body and Spirit 3. Reach out. Send an e-mail to a friend you haven’t seen in a while, or reach out to someone new. Having close bonds with other people is one of the most important keys to happiness. 4. Rid yourself of a nagging task. Deal with that insurance problem, purchase something you need or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist. 5. Create a more serene environment. Order on the outside contributes to peace on the inside. So, spend a little time organizing bills and tackling the piles in the kitchen. Set the timer for 10 minutes and see what you can do. 6. Do a good deed. Introduce two people by e-mail, take a minute to pass along useful information or deliver some gratifying praise. In fact, you can also ... 7. Save someone’s life. Give the gift of life: give blood. Or sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your family about your decision. Do good, feel good – it really works! 8. Act happy. Fake it ‘til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced smile boosts your mood. 9. Learn something new. Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, buy a book about it or check your local library. But be honest! Pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think you “should” or “need” to learn. In these hot summer days, I wish you happiness! Mind/Body Essentials: Walking the Labyrinth A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness and provides a spatial focus to encourage people to be in the present moment. Walking the labyrinth path may be just the experience that allows you to slow down and quiet the chaos that seems to surround your hectic schedule. Join Debi Bocar, Ph.D., on Monday, Aug. 24, as she provides a brief overview of the symbolism of a labyrinth and how it can be used. Participants will have the opportunity to walk in the company of others on a portable labyrinth that fills almost the entire room. The presentation, sponsored by the INTEGRIS James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at INTEGRIS PACER Fitness Center, 5520 N. Independence Ave. Did You Know? Debi Bocar, Ph.D., The INTEGRIS Health Positive Directions mentoring program has been in existence since 1992, providing mentors at three elementary schools in Oklahoma City, one in Yukon and two in Seminole. During the 2008-2009 school year, more than 380 mentors participated, donating more than 6,000 hours of mentoring time. AUGUST 2009 * Reservation required.
