Rhododendron (Ivory maximum x Sunspray)
Rhododendron 'Consolini's Windmill'
Rhododendron (Ivory maximum x
Sunspray)
A nice late yellow we received as a seedling
from Chris Trautmann back in the mid 90's. He
tells us the cross was made by the late Dr. Tom
Ring and Chris grew some of the seed. Hardy
yellows are scarce and late-blooming ones
even more so. This has beautiful dark green
foliage in bright light and not too much direct
sun or the leaves may yellow. Zones 6-8. H:

Rhododendron (maximum x calophytum)
Dr. August Kehr. Large leaves on a robust
grower. The flowers are pink to white and sit
on the rosette of large leaves in a most regal
manner. Zones 6-7. H: 5-6 ft. W: 5-6 ft.

Rhododendron 'Carolina Spring'
(sport of catawbiense 'Boursault'). Thomasson.
A variegated leaf form of 'Boursault' with irregular creamy streaks and splashes throughout
the leaves. The flower is the same purply-pink
as 'Boursault'. Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Caroline'
(fortunei ssp. decorum hybrid). Gable. Named
for one of Gable's daughters, the loose trusses
of large flowers are light orchid pink and
moderately fragrant with narrow light green
leaves. A large growing plant and one of the
best performers for the East Coast. Popular for
hybridizing, as recent research has shown it to
be resistant to fungal root diseases. Zones 5-7.

Rhododendron 'Barmstedt'
Rhododendron 'Carte Blanche'
('Sammetglut' X yakushimanum 'Koichiro
Wada'). Hachmann. Rosy-red flowers with
darker edges holds their color well and are
displayed beautifully on a low-growing mound
with recurved dark green leaves. Buds young
and is perhaps the best overall grower of the
Hachmann introductions. Named in honor of
Herr Hachmann's home town in Germany.
Looks great even when not in bloom! Zones

(R. brachycarpum X 'Bonfire'). Shapiro. White
funnel-shaped and ruffled-edged flowers are
set off by brilliant yellow spots on the dorsal
lobe. Domed trusses of 18-20 flowers open
from pink buds, which age quickly to white. Retains color longer on outside and on margins.
Compact and vase-shaped with exceptional
dark green glossy foliage. A good performer.

Rhododendron 'Betty Hume'
Rhododendron 'Charles Loomis'
(fortunei x unknown). Dexter/Baldsiefen hybird.
A mid-May bloomer that will not be easily upstaged. Ruffled and fragrant, multi-colored pink
4" flowers have heavy substance. The upright
trusses are displayed on a medium growing
sun-tolerant plant with the characteristic large
matte-green fortunei-type leaves. A "top-of-theline" Dexter. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
('English Roseum' X hyperythrum). John
Thornton. The species R. hyperythrum shows
great heat tolerance. Our plant of the hybrid
'Charles Loomis' endures our hot summers and
never shows any ill effects. Buds heavily, with
rounded trusses emerging first as blush pink
quickly turning white, much like a yak hybrid.
The narrow and glossy recurved leaves are
retained for 3-4 years. Zones 5-8. H: 3-4 ft. W:
4-5 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
Rhododendron 'Cadis'
Rhododendron 'Cherries and Merlot'
('Caroline' X fortunei ssp. discolor). Gable.
One of the last to bloom in what we call the
midseason (May 25 for us), 'Cadis' puts on
a floriferous show with its fragrant ruffled
light-pink trusses with yellow deep in its throat.
Zones 6-7. H: 5-6 ft. W: 5-6 ft.

[('Pretty Baby' x pachysanthum) X ('Rosevallon'
x 'Rubicon')='Whid Bee']. Fujioka. Stunning
new hybrid with red-purple leaf bottoms. Upper
leaf surface is glossy dark green and flowers
are glowing red. Plant is very dense, compact
and mound shaped. This plant may have a better chance of tolerating eastern gardens than
'Rosevallon'. Zones 6-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
3-6", 1 quart $20
Rhododendron 'Calsap'
Rhododendron 'Consolini's Windmill'
('Catalgla' X 'Sappho'). Michener. A show
stopper! 'Calsap' combines the hardiness of
'Catalgla' with 'Sappho' to produce a super
hardy, upright grower. White flowers with a bold
purple flare on the upper lobe in a formal truss.
Sets a prodigious amount of seed and should
be dead-headed after flowering to maintain
vigor. Zones 4-7. H: 6-7 ft. W: 5-6 ft.
10-15", 2 gal. $35
(unknown Dexter parents). Consolini. A
sensation in bloom! The picotee-type flower is
red edged with white on a fast growing plant
with good habit and shiny foliage. Best in
dappled shade. Tony Consolini was Charles
Dexter's gardener for many years and a noted
hybridizer in his own right. Zones 5-7. H: 4-5

Rhododendron 'Cynosure'
Rhododendron 'Edith Bosley'
Rhododendron 'Cynosure'
Rhododendron 'Edith Bosley'
('Essex Scarlet' x fortunei). Shapiro hybrid. The
Shapiros considered this their best plant and
many agree. A medium-sized plant, wider than
tall that buds up heavily even in full shade, but
also does well in sun. The full pink trusses in
late May have a distinctive rust-colored flare in
the throat of each flower. The name says it all
because it is a center of attraction! Zones 5-8.

(Dexter/Bosley 1035 x Lee’s Dark Purple).
Bosley Nursery. The closest thing to the royal
purple color of 'Purple Splendor' in a zone 5
hardy plant? Perhaps. In late May flower buds
of rich dark purple open to medium purple with
a dark flare on the upper lobe. The plant habit
is bushy and compact with nice dark green
foliage. Not recommended for areas with very
hot summers. Zones 5-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron decorum 'Gable's
Hardy White'
(seed collected in the wild). Gable. This is a
tough decorum. It is a well-clothed but open
grower that eventually becomes a large plant.
The leaves are a dark shade of green and the
flowers are large white in an ever-so-slightly
loose truss. Zones 5-7. H: 5-6 ft. W: 5-6 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Dexter's Champagne'
(parentage unknown). Dexter. The name is
an apt one; the fragrant flowers are buff with
faint highlights of pink, apricot, and yellow. The
foliage is moderately glossy and olive green in
color. Zones 5-8. H: 6-7 ft. W: 6-7 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Dexter's Honeydew'
(parentage unknown). Dexter. Few rhododendrons can rival 'Dexter's Honeydew' for
fragrance, filling the air when in full bloom. The
medium-sized plant forms a mound wider than
high with a tendency to sprawl, but pinching
when young will help shape it. Large 4", flatfaced flowers are soft pink and white, set off by
large olive-green leaves. Choice! Zones 6-7. H:
3-4 ft. W: 4-5 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30

(probably a fortunei hybrid). Dexter.. As the
name implies, fragrance is the name of the
game, and "peppermint" nails it perfectly.
Flower color is a mixture of pale pink lilac to
white with yellow green spotting in the throat.
Plant is upright and floriferous. Zones 6-8. H:

(Dexter's Giant Red X yak, Whitney dwarf
form). cross by Charlie Patterson, registered
by George Hibben. Humorously described as a
cross between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua,
it's an exceptionally worthy addition to our
"kennel" of offerings. Deep pink buds open
to large light pink flowers turning pure white
with a contrasting red spot deep in the throat.
Matte-finished leaves are thick and leathery
with a thin layer of indumentum. Zones 5-7. H:

Rhododendron 'Excelsior'
Rhododendron 'Janet Blair'
Rhododendron 'Excelsior'
Rhododendron 'Harold Amateis'
Opening from deep pink buds to blush-colored
flowers, this is a tough, durable and beautiful
yak hybrid from Heinje Nursery in Germany.
Leaves are thick in texture, providing an attractive foil for the flowers which appear later than
most yaks. Reportedly very cold hardy-try it
and let us know! Zones 5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
10-15", 3 gal. $50 15-18", 3 gal. $65
(maximum X strigillosum). Amateis/Baldsiefen.
The new growth is fantastic. Long, narrow, upright fingery shoots are covered with red bracts
and hairs. Mature leaves are relatively narrow,
very dark green and heavily textured. Flowers
of deep, pure red in ball trusses will knock you
out. Zones 5-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Francesca'
Rhododendron 'Helen Everitt'
('Britannia' X 'Dexter 202'). Hybrid by A. Consolini & A. Savella in 1971.. A tall growing plant
with buds that are almost black-red as they
open. The flowers are a deep carmine red in a
large spectacular truss. A great very cold-hardy
red for late midseason display. This was the
answer to the blue-red color of 'Nova Zembla'
which had been the hardy red choice for northern climates. Zones 5-7. H: 5-0 ft. W: 5-0 ft.
18-24", 3 gal. $65
(two unknown Dexter hybrids). Everitt/Fuller
hybrid. The trusses, made up of 4 inch pure
white highly fragrant flowers, are often partially
double. They look stately and handsome on
this medium to large-sized plant. The flowers
are remarkable, but the intense fragrance is the
real story. Zones 6-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Ghost'
Rhododendron 'Helsinki University'
Delp. NEW! Flowers are pristine white opening
late (early June here) after most others have
finished. Leaves are very dark green. Parentage is 75% native maximum with 25% yak.
What this gives you is a plant that looks much
like maximum in flower and leaf, with a much
more refined and compact habit from the yak
genes. Zones 5-8. H: 3-4 ft.. W: 4-6 ft..
6-10", 1 gal. $25
(R. brachycarpum (as ssp.tigerstedtii) open
pollinated). Uosukainen. Tough as nails,
this Finnish beauty is medium in height and
extremely cold-hardy. Light pink flowers sit in
jaunty fashion atop its glossy green foliage.
This one stands out among the many other
varieties in our nursery for its clean "brachycarpum-type" foliage and rounded plant habit.

Rhododendron 'Grace Seabrook'
Rhododendron 'Heritage Best Orange
Salmon'
('The Honourable Jean Marie de Montague'
X strigillosum). Seabrook. One of the earliest
eleps to bloom, "Grace" has many fans! MidApril brings a "wake-you-up-in-the-spring" red,
in full trusses of large flowers further enhanced
by large dark green leaves. Give it a protected
location in Zone 6 or warmer. Similar to
'Taurus', but her flower buds are green and she
blooms about a week earlier. Zones 6-8. H: 5-6
ft. W: 5-6 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Great Smokey'
Rhododendron 'Ingrid Mehlquist'
(vernicosum X 'Hardy Giant'). Haag. This is a
vigorous plant with large soft lilac pink trusses
topped off with a vivid reddish-purple blotch
deep in the throat. A hardy "big one" that
deserves wider attention. Zones 5-7. H: 5-6 ft.
W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
('Besse Howells' X yakushimanum). Mehlquist.
Frilly white flowers emerge from pinky-lavender buds in small but very full and abundant
trusses. An exceptional rock-hardy yak hybrid
with great foliage. The low, compact plant
buds heavily from a young age and has been
identified in scientific studies as being highly
resistant to phytopthera (root rot disease).

Rhododendron 'Hachmann's Picobello'
Rhododendron 'Janet Blair'
('Hachmann's Kabarett' X 'Schneespiegel').
Hachmann. NEW! White as snow with a
blackberry eye, the ruffled 3-inch flowers are
striking. The plant is small and compact, in 10
years only about 3 feet high and 4 feet wide,
Beautiful glossy dark green foliage. Winter hardiness to about -10°F. Both parents grow well
here so this should too. Zones 6-7. H: 30-36 in.

(parentage unknown). most likely Jack Cowles.
Of unknown origin, this has unusual pastel
peach-colored trusses. It has proven to be an
excellent and satisfying plant with no winter
damage here in central NJ, in over 20 years.
Somewhat lax growth habit, but the color
is lovely, with healthy medium matte-green
foliage and a hint of tan indumentum. Quite
distinctive! Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

The offspring of 'Wild Affair' x 'Kristin Marie'need we say more? She's a late bloomer and a
beautiful bicolor, with pinky-red edging a white
center- well worth waiting for! Well-endowed
with medium green, long pointed leaves. Hank

blotch, edged with ruffles. Deep green and
very glossy foliage on a compact plant. A topnotch plant from the world-famous Hachmann
Nursery in Germany and a standard in its color

Rhododendron 'Kalinka'
('Morgenrot' X ['Mars' x yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada']). Hachmann. A low-growing beautiful
shrub with dark green, lightly indumented
leaves that show off its yak background. This
is a compact shrub that needs no pruning.
The flowers are a strong rose pink that fade to
lighter pink but hold their color better than other
yakushimanum hybrids. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft.

Rhododendron 'Kerns' Violetta'
(unknown cross). Kerns. The flower is a large

Rhododendron 'Lady of June'
Rhododendron 'Maid For Shade'
('Lady Eleanor Cathcart' x decorum). Dexter. A
very large growing and distinctive plant grown
by John Wister at Swarthmore, PA and later at
Tyler Arboretum from seedlings he was given
by Dexter in 1945. The very large leaves show
R. maximum influence as do the late June pink
flowers. Leaves also have a distinctive bend
or arch shape sometimes seen in R. arboreum
hybrids. Zones 5-7. H: 6-8 ft. W: 6-8 ft.

We're still trying to find more about this plant's
history- but it's from the Shapiros and is a good
grower that stands out after the main bloom
season is past. Pink and prettily ruffled flowers
in a nicely rounded truss are set off by dark
green leaves. The plant gets quite large and
prefers shade. Plant detective needed! Zones

very odd rhododendron in that in blooms reliably in September! Nice medium sized trusses
are white with a small yellow flare on the upper
lobes. Leaves are attractive dark green on a
very low growing, dense, semi-dwarf plant.
Don't expect much bloom in the spring, it's a
fall thing! Zones 5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 5-6 ft.

This would still be a garden gem just for
its leaves, which are long and narrow and
arranged around the stems like the ribs of an
umbrella. New growth is covered with white
tomentum and the plant habit is dense and
rounded. Flowers are pink turning white and
held in a compact truss. This species does well
in the Northeast. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

Dexters, how can this not be good? Large,

Rhododendron 'Rabatz'
('Double Date' X 'Erato'). Hachmann Nursery.
The name means "ruckus" or "uproar" in German and this variety may certainly cause an
uproar in the world of red rhododendrons. Brilliant cardinal red flowers in full trusses appear
in May on compact growing plants, unusual for
reds. We must grow it for a few years more to
see if it's as good as we think. It looks great so
far! Zones 6-7. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.
18-24", 3 gal. $55
One of the very earliest blooming large-leaf
(elepidote) varieties to open here. This makes
quite a splash in early to mid April in central
NJ. Our original plant is very compact and
about 5-6 feet after about 15 years. It is an
easy to grow species. Bright pink buds open
to flowers of the same color. Zones 6-8. H: 5-6
ft. W: 5-6 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron pachysanthum
A rare species from a few high mountains in
Taiwan, certainly a contender for the most
attractive foliage of any rhododendron. New
growth covered with white to brown indumentum which changes to golden tan, wearing
off during the summer, yet retains a thick
layer underneath the leaves. Pink buds, white
flowers. Not for beginners. Zones 6-8. H: 3-4

Rhododendron 'Pearce's American
Beauty'
(possibly 'Mrs. C. S. Sargent' X 'Dr. H. C.
Dresselhuys'). Pearce in the 1930s, named by
Watson, 1983. Hard to walk past this one! A
distinctive plant with an overall formal effect,
but the deep rose flowers set off by a gold flare
are definitely NOT! The compact, full truss sits
on an "Elizabethan collar" of wide dark green
leaves. Very cold hardy and a robust grower
which is becoming more popular. Zones 5-7. H:
5-6 ft. W: 4-5 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $35 18-24", 3 gal. $60
Rhododendron 'Pure Sex'
('Janet Blair' X 'Loderi Venus'). Tom Ring. A
lovely flower and plant with a hard to forget
name! The romantically scented and appealing
soft lavender flowers have no stamens or
anthers, those are the male parts, giving the
flowers a simple pure look. The name thus
refers to the most "pure" of the genders. Zones
6-8. H: 4-6 ft. W: 4-6 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
Rhododendron 'Purple Passion'
('Purple Splendour' X 'Catalgla') PP9981.
Blough. When we're asked for a good purple
rhododendron,'Purple Passion' has become
our standard answer. It hails from the "icebox"
of western PA where winter temperatures can
reach -20°F. Trusses of medium purple flowers
with a white flare on the upper lobe. The plant
is upright and vase-shaped, with deep green
leaves. Zones 4-7. H: 5-6 ft. W: 5-6 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'R. O. Delp'
('Lodestar' X 'Mary Belle'). Delp. One of the
best creations and introductions of Weldon
Delp ever. This prolific breeder must have really liked it because he named it for his father:
Ronald Otto Delp. Beautiful light pink in rounded trusses on a plant with great leaves. Has
proven itself to be a good parent for breeding
yellows. Zones 5-7. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

To inject some humor into Hank’s talks on rhododendrons,
he began providing a handout to reduce planting and care

using it, we noticed a decline in questions about how to
handle rhododendrons and azaleas. It turns out it helps
and that’s no joke. So here it is.

Rhododendron 'Red River'
Rhododendron 'Spätlese' 'Spatlese'
Rhododendron 'Red River'
Rhododendron 'Sneezy'
[maximum 'Mount Mitchell' X ('Mars' x 'Fanfare')]. Leach. This plant is a late bloomer, tall,
full truss of 16-19 flowers and the large, longish
leaves of maximum. The flowers are larger
than maximum, bright red with a white throat
and small yellow dorsal flare. Zones 5-7. H: 5-6

(yakushimanum x 'Doncaster'). Waterer, Sons
& Crisp hybrid. The idea of growing each plant
of the famous Seven Dwarfs series is appealing to the Disneyphile but not practical in the
Northeast. 'Sneezy' seems to be the exception.
The flowers are rose with a lighter throat which
is enhanced by dark red spotting to create
a flare. Low growing with midseason bloom.
Zones 5-7. H: 1-2 ft. W: 2-3 ft.

Rhododendron 'Ring's Monarch'
Rhododendron 'Solidarity'
Domed trusses of lovely ruffled pink flowers accented with a golden yellow blotch in
mid-season. Gorgeous dark green leaves are
quite sun tolerant and always look great, free
of leaf spots. Does much better here than
'Scintillation' and of a similar color so obviously
we prefer it. Don't think of this as "just another
pink"! Zones 6-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

(yakushimanum X 'The Honourable Jean Marie

signature plant! Hank Schannen hybridized
this winner, with luminous extra-large flowers
combining red, pink and white hues as they
age and new buds open. The vigorous, wider
than tall plant has dark green leathery foliage.
Southerners report it to be one of the best
eleps for its excellent heat tolerance. Very

Rhododendron 'Rockbridge'
('Maxecat' X hyperythrum). M. Stillwell/W.
Lefever. NEW! Very easy to please plant has
several distinctive qualities. Elegant tall trusses
of white flowers have heavy red speckles on
the upper lobes open from pink buds. The new
growth occurring with the flowers has matching
red coloration. These trusses contrast beautifully with the especially dark black-green matte
leaves. Zones 5-8. H: 4-6 ft. W: 4-6 ft.

Rhododendron 'Shrimp Girl'
(yakusimanum X Fabia Group). Waterer/Crisp.
We believe this to be the best of the yak x 'Fabia' crosses for our climate. It's a plant of low,
spreading stature with small gray/green leaves.
The flowers are mostly pink with an sherbet
orange cast. It buds young and consistently,
blooming in the middle of May. It presents an
exotic look in a kaleidoscope of color. Zones

Rhododendron 'Silberreif'
(sport of 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum'). H. Renken. Some variegated plant fanatics will search
the globe for new and different forms. That's
how we acquired our original cuttings of 'Silberreif' from Germany. The variegated leaves
of this variety are very prettily "embroidered"
with a silvery margin around the edges. The
name is an accurate depiction, as "silberreif"
means "silver frost" in German. Zones -. H:

Rhododendron 'Silver Sovereign'
Rhododendron 'Spätlese' 'Spatlese'
(R. yakushimanum X smirnowii). Morris/

well clothed, and has excellent silvery-white
compact trusses. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 4-5

sweeter grapes picked late in the season. Big
deep pink, ruffled, funnel-shaped flowers have
red interior flecks. Glossy dark green leaves
and vigorous, wide upright habit. Wunderbar!

possibly the truest to blue color yet in an
elepidote rhody! This is very new for us so we
haven't even seen it bloom yet, but based upon
its parentage, it should grow well here in the
east. It was bred by Mike Bones of Florence
Oregon. We have a report from France that the
plant and flowers tolerate sun well. Zones 6-8.

LEPIDOTE RHODODENDRONS
Rhododendron 'Amber Lantern'
Rhododendron 'Lemon Twist'
Rhododendron 'Amber Lantern'
Rhododendron 'Faisa'
(Keiskei Hybrid). Frank Arsen. This dainty
spring charmer is an antidote to winter blues!
Yellow flowers with a tinge of pink cover this
early blooming (late April to early May) lepidote
rhododendron. Small medium green leaves
cover a compact plant. A good spring wake up
call before the big-leaved rhododendrons begin
to bloom. Zones 5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
(minus, Carolinianum Group, pink flwd. X polycladum Scintillans Group). Delp. A top choice
when we're asked for a "foolproof" lepidote.
Smoky lavender-blue flowers, with a densely
compact, upright form and bronzy foliage. Unlike many lepidotes, our hot, dry summers don't
seem to bother it. It's also cold hardy, growing
and blooming in MA in an exposed location
after reaching -26°F above the snow. Zones
4-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Angel Powder'
Rhododendron 'Ginny Gee'
('Epoch' X mucronulatum, white flowered).
Delp. Among the best of Delp's lepidote
hybrids, this grows in popularity every year
as more gardeners discover 'Angel Powder's
ethereal beauty. Large white flowers with a
subtle pink blush and light pink spotting, on
a medium-growing plant with larger leaves
similar to R.carolinianum. Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft.
W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
(keiskei var. 'Yaku Fairy' X racemosum). Berg.
Named by Warren Berg after Hank Schannen's wife Virginia, this award-winning favorite
is grown around the world. Two-toned pink
flowers that turn to pinky-white totally cover this
dwarf, small-leafed plant which is both heat
and cold tolerant. Foliage turns dark maroon in
the winter. Zones 5-7. H: 18-24 in. W: 30-36 in.
6-10", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Caramou'
Rhododendron 'Hank's Snowball'
(minus, Carolinianum Group, white flwd. X
moupinense). Nearing. Early, very thick and
waxy pure white flowers light up the garden in
early April. This is one of the first lepidotes to
bloom and occasionally you will lose flowers to
late spring frosts but it is worth the risk. Forms
a compact mound of dark, evergreen leaves
that will not get over 4 feet in 10 years. Zones
5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
Hank Schannen. NEW! One of Hank's
creations which we've never had enough of
to sell until now. Nice very compact plant that
stays quite small, loads of light pink buds
open to pure white flowers like a dwarf 'Rik' or
'Pikeland'. Limited quantity. Zones 5-7. H: 1-2
ft. W: 2-3 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Coral-Pink Prologue'
Rhododendron hippophaeoides 'Blue
Silver'
(mucronulatum hybrid x lutescens). Frank Furman. This is one of our favorite plants from the
late Frank Furman who bred rhododendrons
in northern NJ. Plant grows about 4-5 feet tall
and slightly less wide. Evergreen leaves are
large and long for a lepidote and attractive
apple-green providing a wonderful foil for the
gorgeous bright clean pink flowers in Mid April.
Zones 6-8. H: 4-5 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
(hippophaeoides hybrid or a selection of the
species). unknown. An unusual selection
or hybrid of R. hippophaeoides with narrow
silvery-gray leaves and lavender-blue flowers.
Winter color is bronze. Plant habit is domeshaped. Our stock plant came from Glendoick
Nursery in Scotland. Prefers cooler climates;
NJ is about the southern limit of it's tolerance
for heat and humidity. Zones 5-6. H: 2-3 ft. W:

Rhododendron diversipilosum (formerly tomentosum) 'Milky Way'
Rhododendron laetevirens (AKA 'Wilsonii' or Wilson Rhododendron)
Steve Hootman, Rhododendron Species Foundation. 'Milky Way' covers itself with rounded
trusses of pure white flowers in mid-spring.
While each individual saucer-shaped flower
is small, they are grouped in six or seven
individual trusses containing up to 20 flowers
each. Formerly considered Ledum. Zones 3-6.
H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
(minus var Carolinianum X ferrugineum). An
old reliable yet distinctive and attractive small
leaf rhododendron that is rarely seen any more.
It resulted from a cross of our native R. Carolinianum with R. ferrugineum, the Alpine Rose
of the mountains of Europe. Growth habit is
low and dense, leaves narrow. Lavender-pink
trusses nestle in the foliage in early May.
Zones 5-7. H: 1-2 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
Rhododendron 'Fairy Mary'
Rhododendron 'Lemon Twist'
(keiski 'Yaku Fairy' x 'Mary Fleming'). Berg
hybrid. One of the best and hardiest of Berg's
Yaku Fairy hybrids. Forms a tight bun similar in
habit to 'Ginny Gee', but flowers are more white
in color, sometimes tinged with light yellow and
pink. Very dark bronze foliage in winter. Great
for rock gardens, troughs and small gardens.
Zones 5-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
6-10", 1 gal. $25
(keiskei var. ozawae x lutescens 'Bagshot

red new growth. Foliage is dark bronze in the
winter. Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

Rhododendron 'Mary Fleming'
Rhododendron 'Sugar Puff'
Rhododendron 'Mary Fleming'
Rhododendron 'Southland'
(keiskei x racemosum x keiskei ). Nearing.
Some plants play supporting roles rather than
starring ones. A great choice for separating the
strong colors of other plants in the late April
garden, as the combination of pale yellow from
R.keiskei and rays of salmon pink from R.racemosum produce a unique effect. Attractive
bronzy winter foliage on a reliable performer.
Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 4-5 ft.

(minus var. chapmanii X keiskei). Auggie Kehr.
A truly fine lepidote from the late Augie Kehr,
'Southland' has many good features. From
chapmanii, it inherited heat and sun tolerance
and from keiskei, cold hardiness and an interesting peachy color. It is a semi-dwarf plant
that forms a low dense mound of glossy medium green leaves slightly larger than its keiskei
parent. Zones 6-7. H: 2-3 ft. W: 2-3 ft.
10-15", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron minus var minus
'Southern Cerise' seedlings
Rhododendron 'Sugar Puff'
Selected by Ron Miller, Clarence Towe, and
Tom Ranney along the shore of Gantt Lake
in Southeastern Alabama. An exceptional
southern form of minus with vivid pinkish-red
flower buds and tubes that open with bright,
pinkish-violet petals. Heat tolerance is a given
based on its provenance. Grown from seed
from the wild plant. Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W:

F. Read/Brigg's Nursery. One unique rhodo!
Small, 1.5" long narrow leaves loosely clothe
showy red stems of this densely twiggy wonder
that buds extremely heavily. As many as 7-8
buds per shoot producing 14-20 flowers in what
appears to be one large domed truss of puffy
white flowers which cover the plant. Blooms
late March to early April. Zones 5-8. H: 4-5 ft.
W: 4-5 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $30
Rhododendron 'Molly Fordham'
('Balta' x minus var. minus Carolinianum
Group). Mezitt/Weston Nursery. This has
become our white lepidote of choice. Think of it
as a PJM-type rhododendron, but covered with
trusses of exceptional white flowers in early
to mid April, set off by dark green and glossy
foliage. Growth habit is compact and upright.
As with all lepidotes, provide sharp drainage.
Zones 5-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
18-24", 2 gal. $50
Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Cornell
Pink'
(selected clonal species of seedling). Bowers.
From the mountains of Korea comes some of
the first blossoms of spring, in very early April.
This clear light pink selection is well-known as
an alternative to lavender. Unlike most other
lepidotes, R.mucronulatum is fully deciduous,
but compensates with great cold-hardiness.

THE BEST METAL TAGS
We offer what we consider to be the longest lasting, permanent labels available. Made of a heavier aluminum with
a soft core, they become embossed when you write on
them with a ball-point pen or pencil.
Lewis. Dave Lewis found this pink form of R.
viscosum growing along a NJ road near an old
toilet seat, so he had a landmark when it was
time for cuttings! Nicknamed "Old Toilet Seat"
until he decided to register it, Betty Cummins
received the recognition for her work in propagating and introducing many new varieties.
Zones 5-8. H: 5-6 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
18-24", 3 gal. $60
Rhododendron viscosum 'Summer Hill
Blue Leaf'
Flower color is the typical fragrant late-blooming white; the difference here is the very glaucous (blue-green) foliage on an upright plant.
Thanks to Summer Hill Nursery of Madison CT
for providing this notable selection of R. viscosum, which like most of this species prefers
moist sites and will tolerate a fair amount of
shade. Zones 5-8. H: 5-6 ft. W: 3-4 ft.
15-18", 1 gal. $35
Rhododendron viscosum var. montanum (Swamp Azalea)
This distinctive form of R.viscosum is undoubtedly the best for garden use. The growth
habit is low and compact, very different from
the normal tall lanky growth of the species.
Native to higher elevations in the Blue Ridge
Mountians of NC, it has the same late, fragrant
white flowers, usually around early to mid-July.
Zones 4-7. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

They are superior to all others we have seen. We discard
the aluminum wires that come with them and instead use
plastic coated bell wire from the hardware store. Use an
8-10" piece, attach one end to the label and make a large
sliding “lasso” at the other end around the branch to avoid
girdling. You can also attach them to a pipe or stake with
a hole drilled in the end.
With your plant order, the price is $20 per box of 100;
ordered alone, the minimum order is two boxes plus $6
shipping. (Add to your Order Form in the center.)

Rhododendron 'August to Frost'
Rhododendron 'August to Frost'
(R. mucronatum 'Sekidera' var. 'Indica Rosea').
Matlack/Beaudry. Repeat bloomers are the
newest trend in evergreen azaleas, but many
are not hardy. This is hardy here in Zone 6b,
with large white (sometimes sectored with
lavender) flowers on a spreading plant. The
name is apt as it doesn't bloom in the springunlike most azaleas, it blooms on new growth
in August and continues into the fall. Zones

Creech in 1972. A perennial favorite with customers, this attention-getting bi-color blooms
in the early mid-season and features white
margined petals with bright splashes of orange
pink flames deepening to a darker pink flare in
the center. Growth habit is tall, fairly open and
hard to miss! Zones 6-8. H: 3-4 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

(unknown X ['Hexe' x 'Vervaeneanum']). From
the Linwood azalea series, developed here in
New Jersey, this has become one of our most
popular evergreen azaleas. The pure white, fully double flowers really do resemble gardenias.
The plant is low growing and dense with dark
green foliage. A caveat: The name describes
the flower's appearance-it has no scent. Zones

Rhododendron 'Bixby'
Rhododendron 'Hilda Niblett'
[(yedoense var. poukhanense x 'Vuyk's Scarlet') F2 (or F3?)]. Weston Nurseries. Clusters
of dark red buds open to deep red flowers,
on a low and spreading plant. Foliage is very
dark green, turning to mahogany red as colder
weather moves in. Bred in central Massachusetts. Yes, that means exceptional cold
hardiness! Zones 5-7. H: 1-2 ft. W: 3-4 ft.

A best seller! 'Hilda Niblett's exceptional flowers are large (4") and spectacular multi-colored

the parentage. Growth is compact, remaining
low and mounding. Zones 6-8. H: 2-3 ft. W:
