THE AQUARIAN WEEKLY INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! Check out over 40 years of The Aquarian’s archived issues in this pictorial review. Established 1969. SPECIAL 16 PAGE COMMEMORATIVE PULL OUT SECTION www.theaquarian.com ARTS WEEKLY APRIL 25, 2012 17 April 2012 Arts Weekly, Inc., is proud to announce that The Aquarian Weekly has been accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives, the world’s preeminent research collection of written and audiovisual materials relating to the history of rock and roll. Current publishers/owners Diane Casazza and Chris Farinas were told of the decision to take the newspaper into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by library director Andy Leach in early January. “I spoke with Andy about the collection and he was thrilled, even amazed that we have copies of every issue printed,” said Casazza.“Throughout all our moves, we’ve always maintained the archives, as they were a valuable resource when we needed to look up past information.” The Aquarian and all supplements — The East Coast Rocker and The Nite Owl — will be delivered to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Library at its new 22,500-square-foot facility in downtown Cleveland. A collection of over 1,800 issues—from 1976 on— will be sent to Cleveland. “We see this collection as a historical record of the evolution of the music and times. It certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame Library,” says Farinas. “New Jersey has always played a big part in the rock music world, and still does. The Aquarian still covers the up-and-coming bands, as well as the major acts that come through the state.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library’s mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to these resources for scholars, educators, students, journalists, and the general public in order to broaden awareness and understanding of rock and roll, its roots, and its impact on our society. The grand opening of the new Rock Hall's library and archives on Cuyahoga Community College's Metropolitan Campus, will be preceded by nine days of tie-in events on Saturday, April 14, during the 2012 induction ceremonies. ABOUT THE AQUARIAN WEEKLY PHOTO BY CATHY MILLER James Rensenbrink, founder. First Issue Of The Aquarian Weekly, 1969 18 ARTS WEEKLY APRIL 25, 2012 www.theaquarian.com Founded by James Rensenbrink in 1969, the Aquarian is New Jersey’s longest running arts and culture newspaper. An alternative voice for the Woodstock generation, it concentrated on radical politics and uncompromising ecological writings.Rensenbrink published passionate writers expressing their exuberant love of life, sharing natural expressions of their own individuality while retaining a powerful voice for Mother Earth and human rights. Over time, the newspaper gravitated to the music scene that was exploding across the Garden State and beyond, reporting each week on dozens of musical and cultural happenings. Going through its back pages, one finds a continually unraveling Jersey scene starting with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith in the mid-‘70s to any number of current artists of the day making local and national waves. Although it never relinquished its political edge, the blend of music and social issues became the guiding balance of the Aquarian’s weekly agenda, and remains so today. Diane Casazza and Chris Farinas took over The Aquarian Weekly in 1998, when Rensenbrink retired to Oregon, and found a third, silent partner in Mark Sceurman of Weird N.J. and the Weird State book series, who started with the Aquarian in 1979 and still retains a desk at the office in Little Falls. “The Aquarian was always something special,” says Sceurman.“There was always something going on. I was more of a ‘behind the scenes’ guy, working in production, but I’ve been with the paper through all its ups and downs, and the craziness of the times. It was a great environment to be in. The deadline was on Monday, and I hadn’t missed a Monday deadline in the 19 years I was in the art department. I remember laying out many of those issues that are going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” Many well-known names in the rock music world have written and photographed for The Aquarian Weekly, including its longtime music editor Mike Greenblatt, the late Lydia Carole de Fretos, future Billboard Editor Timothy White, Star Ledger Music Editor Jay Lustig, The Boston Globe’s Jim Verniere, Mike Daly (who fronts indie rock band Mike Daly & The Planets), disc jockey Vin Scelsa, Bob Santelli of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), Joe Dera, the late Gene Kalbacher, Catholic Priest Father Charlie Crespo (who started as an Aquarian gossip columnist dubbed “Everynight Charlie”), George Dassinger, acclaimed novelist Susan Shapiro (who was published for the first time in her career in the Aquarian) and Ruth Polsky (pioneering provocateur and promoter who covered Great Britain and the early punk scene for the Aquarian, and who died in the line of duty on September 7, 1986 when a cab jumped the curb outside The Limelight nightclub).Such respected journalists as Scott Shinder, Craig Zeller, Bob Makin, John Reynolds, Jeff Tamarkin, Joe Edwards, Bob Cianci, Anna Cerami and Rich Lee all got their starts at the Aquarian. Photographers have included Bob Sorce, Charlie Frick, Bob Leafe, Karen Bialecki (K.B. Shoots), Mark Weiss, Mitch Kearney, Ebet Roberts, Cathy Miller and many others. Unlike many of The Aquarian’s predecessors in the music publishing business, which either folded or sold out to trendy commercial concerns, The Aquarian has maintained its integrity and once-aweek print deadline. The newspaper certainly had its ups and downs both financially and editorially over the years, but it still stands as New Jersey’s most-awarded music newspaper. Time marches on, formats change, butThe Aquarian Weekly continues to provide music content and social issues to all its patrons, 42 years after its first issue, either on the newsstands or online. From its first office next to the Capitol Theater in Passaic, then Montclair and now in Little Falls, The Aquarian Weekly is one of the few independently owned newspapers in the U.S., and might just be the final pioneer in original music.
