SWIMMER FACTS "Success doesn't always come at a time when you want it too, all you can do is prepare" Natalie Coughlin Natalie Coughlin USA Natalie Coughlin Hall (born August 23, 1982), née Natalie Anne Coughlin, is an American competition swimmer and twelve-time Olympic medalist. Ten days before her 20th birthday in 2002, she became the first woman ever to swim the 100-meter backstroke (long course) in less than one minute. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, she became the first U.S. female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympiad, and the first woman ever to win a 100-meter backstroke gold in two consecutive Olympics. Coughlin's success has earned her the World Swimmer of the Year Award once and American Swimmer of the Year Award three times. She has won a total of forty-nine medals in major international competition, twenty-two gold, seventeen silver, and ten bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she earned a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Her total of twelve Olympic medals tie her with Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres for the most alltime by an American woman. 6 ADVICE FROM A SWIMMER WHO HAS MADE THE BIG TIME Words from Cameron McEvoy in a recent SV article: Question: What are your best tips for beating the big boys? Cameron has become so successful, even though he was a head shorter than his competition. He said his mum, a psychologist, really helps him get his head around the fact that he couldn’t control how tall he or anyone else was, or how fast anyone else was, and that he could only control how hard he trained and how much effort he put in. While he was focusing on every single aspect of his training and technique, he was improving a little bit but not very much, so he dropped down the rankings slightly, but kept at it and it eventually paid off and he started to improve heaps when he started to grow. Question: How do you deal with a bad swim? Realise that it wasn’t the swim as a whole that was bad, and that you have to identify the elements that were bad and work on them in training. Remember that the sun will always rise tomorrow, you’ll still go to school, you’ll still see your friends, and life will pretty soon go back to normal – a bad swim doesn’t change your life. I was excited as it is my last year competing in Primary School swimming. I had 2 races, the back and breast. I came 6th in breast and after a very close race in the back I was 2nd by 0.04 seconds. The best part was getting on the podium and getting a medal. We represented our schools but like usual, all the Sharks found each other and sat together to cheer each other on. Well done to all that qualified to swim at this meet – Jen Dobie, Chloe Maczka, Layla Murrell, Bianca Mathews, Megan Irvine, Mirela Cazacenco, Josh Gomes, Keiya Osumi, Tiaan Kulkens Bedian, Sophie Parton, Jenny Cui, Luzaan Du Preez and myself. A special mention to Bianca for winning the 12/13 yr old freestyle and Josh for winning the 10 yr old breaststroke and Chloe for winning gold in the 10yr old breaststroke. They all qualified for state finals. Good luck to Josh and Chloe for the finals. Bianca had to withdraw as she has recently had an operation on her elbow. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Also a special mention to the following swimmers who also medalled – Keiya Osumi silver in 11 yr old breaststroke, , Mirela Cazacanco silver in the 12/13 backstroke, Heathdale 11yr old freestyle relay team Jenny Cui & Luzaan DuPreez, Jai Rauner-Smith silver in 11 yr old backstroke, Bianca Mathews bronze in 12/13 yr old butterfly Well done to all you participated. The air was crisp and the wind had a bite when Emma Chang-Kum, Tristan Harrison, Tyler Smit and I arrived at Kardinia Park, Geelong. We were swimmers from Werribee Secondary College, but more importantly, swimmers from Wyndham City Sharks. We were greeted with other familiar Wyndham faces. Ariana Chase (from Point Cook Senior), Erin Devlin (Williamstown High School), Emma Oorloff (Hoppers Crossing Secondary College), Caitlin Huell (Maribyrnong Sports Academy) and Sophia Potter. There was some heavy competition from other clubs such as Melton, Laverton and Geelong, but we managed to pull through, snagging some silvers and bronze, and yes, some gold. All in all, Regional’s was a success, for both the schools and the club. A huge congratulations to our swimmers who have progressed to State Level. Erin Devlin Emma Chang-Kum Emma Oorloff Caitlin Huell Sophia Potter Naomi Janmaat We wish you all good luck and great fun.
