serama show - Aviculture Europe
Proud owners, top animals and striking breed products Part 3 On the First Saturday in September 2007 it was a crowded house in Barneveld (NL), honouring its history as a town of Chicken and Eggs. Under supervision of the Local Club ‘Gallinova’, several Club Shows were hold in the Market Halls: the Young Animal Day of Gallinova, the Brahma Club Show, the Silkie Club Show and the Club Show of the brand-new Dutch Serama Club. At the same time, the Rosecomb Bantam Club Show was held at another location in Barneveld. In the following, a photo report on the Serama Club Show and the Brahma Club Show. Left: The biggest (a Columbia Brahma cockerel) and the smallest (Serama cock) together in the picture. Photo: Klaas Dillema. SERAMA SHOW Text and photos: Monique de Vrijer. Picture right: When I arrived early in the morning Drakie, the Serama cock of Sigrid van Dort, was already present. Drakie was used during the day as an example how the ideal Serama should be. Drakie is a stunning cockerel who managed to pose and 'strut' for over one and a half hour continuously. After a pause he went 'on stage' again, several times. Picture below: This is how Sigrid had built up the Serama Show Stand. It was a good idea to put chairs around, so the visitors could sit down and admire the Serama and take pictures. In these pictures you can see the chickens of 'Just one Serama' (owner Henk van Vaassen) who have thought of a special way of showing their birds. They are a pair of silky Serama named ‘Jopie’ (the pullet) and ‘Giddy-up’ (the cockerel). Jopie (born at January 1, 2007) is the first Serama with a certificate, meaning: Jopie is a true Serama! Here is Jopie being scaled. She gained 85 points and from 80 points the certificate is granted. Giddy-up also gained his certificate. Below: Jopie and Giddy-up are badly in love! Above: Some of the ‘For Sale’ group Sigrid especially bred for the club members; they could choose their pairs in the order of applying for membership. A cockerel and a pullet from Klaas ‘Sweetlake Serama’. In the picture left below is a cockerel of 'Hillridge Serama', doing his utmost in performing! Right: The last two pictures are of ‘Deukie’, owner Klaas 'Sweetlake Serama'. Deukie (meaning ‘little dent’) owes her name to the egg she hatched from, which actually had a little dent. Right: ‘Eye catcher’ was Drakie, the Serama cockerel of Sigrid van Dort. Below: All day long interested visitors were asking questions, even from abroad. Late in the afternoon the national and local press arrived. Pity that at that time both 'boys' were a bit tired and timid by all that attention. BRAHMA CLUB DAY Text and photos: Monique de Vrijer Here follows some general impressions of the Brahma Club Day. This year a lot more birds were entered; actually 130 large fowl and 110 bantams, actually the largest number that has ever been entered at a Club Day! Left: Judging and discussing a cuckoo pullet from Martijn van Rongen (in the red sweater) by Judge Van Beek. Left: We could not organise a Club Day like this without help of all the volunteers. Here is one of them, Peter van den Top (whose large Buff Columbia cockerel gained ‘Outstanding’ with 96 points), concentrated on writing the judge’s report. Below: These 3 young men are not ‘qualified’ judges but being members of the Brahma Club they were invited by the Board to judge a number of birds today. Who else could be a better ‘judge’ than those who actually breed the Brahma and study and compare their birds every day? This way, breeders are also stimulated to become a qualified Judge. The young man in the blue shirt is Sander Visser; the one in the white polo shirt is Gunther van Weyenberg (from Belgium) and the ‘writer’ is Martin Lageweg. Fortunately, after a minute analysis of each bird, the decisions of all three ‘judges’ were well-matched. Then, the Brahmas nominated "Best" were also evaluated by other judges. Right below: ‘Delightful task to rear the tender thought’ … Stijn Mijnen 14 years old- is very keen in learning how to judge and asked nineteen to the dozen. In the mean time ‘writer’ Sanna Kwakkel learned a lot! Below: Judge Martin Scheuter points out to the interested breeders and visitors how a proper pea comb should be. Next you can admire the pictures of several Large Brahma top birds (on the next page): White-black columbia pullet of T.Dokkuma. Buff-black columbia pullet of P. Stokkermans. Partridge pullet of Ludwig van Roy. Cuckoo pullet of B. Beekhuis. Blue cockerel of G. Hendriks. In the last picture (below right) you partridge bantam cockerel of Kris de Vos. see a In the before page some of the better bantams are pictured. Maybe they are not always ‘Best’ in their colour variety, but at the moment of photographing ‘the Best’ had not been selected yet. The colour varieties with the corresponding name of the breeders: White-black columbia bantam pullet of Herman Baltus Buff-black columbia bantam cockerel of Herman Clevers Partridge bantam pullet of Kris de Vos Silver pencilled bantam pullet of Marc van Paemel Silver pencilled bantam cockerel of J. Beukers Blue partridge bantam pullet of Kris de Vos Left: This cockerel wasn’t selected winner, still its owner Sander Visser was so very proud of it that I could not resist picturing him together with his very rare colour variety buff blue columbia. ( Good, 92 points. ) I would like to say thanks to the people of the Serama Club, the Brahma Club and the Silkie Club (that report will be in our next issue) who were so helpful to me today. My special thanks go to Sigrid and Klaas of the Serama Club and Berend Beekhuis and Theo Visser of the Brahma Club. They pointed out many interesting details and told me a lot, making this a very fine day to experience. Left: Monique de Vrijer with her Brahma cock Sebastiaan. Photo: Courtesy Martin Marcel.
