We had six rookies show up and it looks like we will have at least four of these pilots racing in September. Scotty and I wanted to thank all of these participants for coming. It does take a lot of time and money to attend the seminar and F1 consistently seems to have the highest number of participants show up each year. The IFl website will have some good pictures to look at from the Racing Seminar as does the RARA website, airrace.org. Gary Dalleske has written a neat report that appears on page 8. I received good news at the Seminar that we will be getting our ninth race back. Now the Bronze racers will have two heat races and the their Final race. Thanks to Reno Air Boss Jeff Tumey for finding time in the schedule for us. Reno entry forms are out and due back in no later than July 18e. It looks like we will have a full field this year so make sure and get your entries in on time. Scott Garland has volunteered to head up an Election Steering Committee. His committee is in charge of selecting names from the list of current members and making contact with them to see if they would be interested in running for an office. If you are interested in running for an office or a committee position LETTERS Smokey Young I just wanted to send you a quick note about the 2003 Fylon Racing Seminar. I was one of the Rookie pilots in attendance and I have to say that it was a wonderful experience. David and Scotty are gteat. They offered outstanding instruction and many insights into the world of Formula 1 Air Racing. The emphasis was on safety and professionalism and both of these gentlemen offered us a fine example. Gary Dalleske and Birch Entriken were also there with lots of good tips and friendly advice. Everyone I have met in this organization so far has been outstanding. My hat is also off to my fellow Rookies. A great group ofguys to hang out and spend a weekend talking airplanes with. I look forward to seeing them again in September as well as getting to meet the other Formula 1 pilots and crews. Smokey Young please notify Scott. Scotty Crandlemire is coordinating the Nellis event in November and Bob Avery and World of Wings has been publicizing our involvement in various aviation magazines. We are awaiting the finalization of their budget and will be distributing more information when we find out our fee. Fly Fast, David FONUUUT FORUM, JULY 2OO3 Dalleske Pilot Profile Bill Rogers with Al Wimer This is Gary Dalleske's 1Oth year with IF1. David Hoover's crew chief since '94, this will be Gary's second year of competition as a pilot. Born in San Mateo, CA, in 1943, Gary had an early exposure to aviation. His father, who was employed by United Airlines in Maintenance Operations in San Francisco, had volunteered for a flight engineer position with the Air In the early 70's, Gary was an active hang-glider pilot and was one of the original 14 members of the Fellow Feathers, an early Bay Area hang-gliding association. In the late 70's he was an avid sailboat racer competing in the Northern CA SBRA series, Mercury Fleet series, and he participated in InterAirline team racing, competing in Japan, England, Denmark, Sweden, GermanY and Italy... sailing whatever the host country provided. He participated in two World Inter-Airline Team Championships, placing Znd in J apan and 3rd in Italy. With an ever increasing interest in anl, thing that flew, Gary attended the 1979 Reno races and was hooked. Gary joined the United Airlines flying club at San Carlos and soloed on his 7th flight in September 1982. Flying every weekend, he soon developed a special interest in F1 watching Dave Morss flying his F1's out of San Carlos. Gary Gary grew uP on the San Francisco peninsula and after high school Gary, too, went to work for United at the SFO Maintenance Center in 1961. He had a Gary crewed for Dave Morss at Paso Robles in'94, when Dave was flYing Eric Mathes on's #92 "Yellow Peril". David Hoover flew down in his Christian Eagle to observe and Gary offered the floor of his hotel room for David to unroll his sleeping bag. They became friends and Gary spent the next three months at David's hangar helping him get ready for Reno '94. GarY was crew chieffor the Frenzy team until stint in the USAF from 1963-67, 200t. Bill Rogers photo Dalleske Transport Command and was flYing in the Pacific Theater when Gary was born. After the war, he returned to Maintenance OPerations. working R & E (radio/electronics) stateside and in Viet Nam. He went back to United as an R & E mechanic and transferred to the Engineering Department in 1969 where he worked until 1997, when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and retired. In remission and with his health returned, Gary was able to reclaim his pilots license and has been living his life to the fullest. FORMUL,A FORUM, JULY 2OO3 After a few of years as crew chief Gary decided to acquire a Formula One. Following Troy Channing's death in a non-racing accident, Gary bought the #90 Midget Mustang, "Destresser". Although he never raced it, he had fun with it until it was damaged in a ground accident. The airplane was eventually acquired by Tim Bovee of Wenatchee WA, properly repaired and returned to Gary also acquired "38 Special", a flight. Cassutt run the year before by Hep Porter and qualifiedit at207 m/h. With Over the years, since 1984, Gary has been busy with a Cessna 172...a l50...another 172....and a flying RV-3 two planes in the Silver, Gary recruited Ib Hansen for pilot duties. "38 Special" lost it's canopy after rounding pylon 4 on Wednesday. Gary was extremely thankful to have such an extraordinarv project. His fleet currently comprises the latest 172,the RV-3 and two F1s hangared at his home on the airpark in Cameron Park, just east of Sacramento. pilot at the controls. Our intrepid Gary also attended the Jim Russell Racing School at Sears Point and raced sports cars in the late '90s, mostly road racing Mazdas at places like Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill and Buttonwillow. He still has two race cars and participates occasionally. Gary acquired an unraced Cassutt in 2001 from Eugene Norman, named it "Blackjack" #21, went to Rookie School and was ready to race it at Reno. He qualified at 191.2 m/h when 9/11 shut us down. Disappointed but determined, he worked hard on it and in 2002,he qualified on the Silver pole at2l9.7 rn/lt, avery impressive 28 mftr improvement. He indicates that he had an outstanding teacher, none other than our own David Hoover. Gary finished 5th in the Silver with "Blackjack" last year. Showing all the symptoms of race fever, he is planning on bringing "Blackjack" to Reno again with even more performance. He has a flow bench for engine work, is reducing the fuel tank size and has installed the small wheels. His other Fl, "38 Special" is still sans canopy, is for sale to anyone who needs an otherwise well sorted, well-cared-for Cassutt. Gary's support of IFl is well documented by his participation in the Reno Rodeo Parade with his airplane. This promotes both IFI and Reno Air Racing Association and is much appreciated by both organizations. "Blackjack" appeared in both 2001 and 2002. He had to miss this year since the parade clashed with the Pylon School and his plane was in pieces an),way. ,id.1$I**Jf lHna.*". Six new pilots with widely varied backgrounds have joined the IFI family and five of our new pilots plan on participating in this year's races. In addition, Birch Entriken, who hangars his clean #50, Scarlet Screamer at Stead, also participated in the PRS just to get a little time on the course and was turning some pretty hot laps. Maynard Crosby, a retired big band leader, who hails from Granite Falls, WA, will be bringing his Jim Miller creation, #14 "Pushy Caf'to Reno in September. Maynard, who has been flying for more than 50 years, has been involved in many facets of aviation including, owning a flight school, performing aerobatics, airqaft sales and aircraft" modifi cations, has some significant landing gear work to do on Pushy Cat and hopes to have the work completed before September. Steve Dari, a business consultant from San Diego, CA, will be bringing his Cassutt IIIM "Redhead". Steve has been flying since he turned 16, and became interested in air racing after reading an air racing article written by Biplane Champion David Rose's mechanic, Eric Hereth. Living in San Diego, Steve also met Charlie Greer along the way and the rest is history. Pat Gleason, who recently purchased Kevin Kelly's award winning#4Z, 'oBarbara Jean II", also participated but will not attend Reno this year as a participant as he is in the middle of rebuildins the engine and doesn't want FORMULA FORUM, JULY 2OO3 2003 Pylon Racing School it. Pat is an ironworker from Half Moon Bay, CA, and has also to rush worked as a traffic-reporting pilot. Daniel Marcotte, a welder from Bakersfield, VT, will be bringing his recently purchased Cassutt IIIM to Reno in September. Daniel began his flying caf,eer flying ultralights and went on to acquire his pilot's license n 1992. Daniel has not yet named his airplane. Scott Thomas, from Sacramento, CA, be bringing his yet to be named Cassutt IIIM to Reno in September. Scott, currently employed as a fire attack pilot had his first flight with his father in a 172 when he was 7 years old. Since then, Scott has gone on to fly Beaver float planes in Alaska for six years, Airtaxi to the Bahamas, air cargo from Key West to Honduras, and he has also will flown in Peru and Chile. Scott has always wanted to be a participant in the Reno Air Races. Our last rookie PRS participant was R.G. "Smokey" Young, who will be arriving in September with his#77 Cassutt IIIM "Zarrin d' that he recently purchased from Tim Bovee. Smokey is the only rookie pilot to bring his airplane to Reno this year and is the only rookie pilot fully qualifred to race at Reno in September. Smokey, a USAF graduate, turned airline pilot is domiciled in Chicago and calls Franklin, TN, home. He hangars his "new" Cassutt with Midnight Oil in the Wrights'hangar in Aubum, CA. Smokey flew F-l I 1's in the USAF and since then has flown 727's,37's and 57's for ATA. We want to give a warm welcome to our new IF1 race pilots and hope they will enjoy their participation in this years competition and in the future. ifl'? iri ;l e,, lF1 Class of '03, L to R, Scotty Crandlemire, David Hoover, instructors, with Smokey Young, Maynard Crosby, Steve Dari, Pat Gleason, Dan Marcotte, & Scott Thomas. FORMUI.A FORUM, JULY 2OO3 Design Analysis - Arnold AR-6 Bill Rogers David Hoover's new, as-yet unnamed N616DH Fl racer is an impressive piece, built with the care and craftsmanship we have come to expect after seeing the beautiful "Frenzy". It also comes with pretty impressive credentials. About six years ago Mike Arnold (Class C-l.A/O 3 Km speed record holder with his AF.-5 at21.3.2 mlh on 65HP Rotax) did a Formula One configuration design for Troy Channing. No further work was done until David contacted him, and they refined the design together. Mike built the fuselage plug in 8 months while completing the detailed design. Construction is in graphite composite, and the airplane was built mostly by Hoover, while Craig Catto built the wing. The only metal is in fittings, controls and in the steel gear and engine mount. Six or seven molds were pulled from the plug to lay up the higlly contoured composite shells and a male form was built for the canopy drape mold. David's requirement obviously, was for an airplane to beat The horizontal is fairly high aspect ratio, and is mounted at the fuselage/fin intersection. The fin and rudder extend above and below the horizontal and the extremely narow aft fuselage. All the tail control surfaces are balanced, and upper and lower rudder surfaces work together. The engine installation is beautifully done with precisely contoured cooling ducts, an oil tank conforming to the engine mount for maximum caPacrtY and a 4 into 1 exhaust system exiting under the insulated fuselage. Engine cooling air is extracted around the exhaust and the carburetor inlet is neatly faired into the front. The two-piece cowling carries an inte$al oil cooler in the lower section with it's own inlet/outlet ducting. ot'{emesis", but also for outstanding visibility, a small static ground angle, and side stick control. 'T.{emesis" is an excellent design, but Jon Sharp's size dictated alarger fuselage than ideal, resulting in extra weight and wetted area. This is addressed in Mike Arnold's design and the AR-6 has less frontal flat plate area than the AR-5. David Lednicer who also worked on'Nemesis", modeled the desigrr and calculated the flat plate area to be only .75 sq ft vs .86 sq for'Nemesis". In addition, the wetted oNemesis". area is 20 sq ft less than AR-6 The slightly tapered wing has a span 24 ft 4 in and an aspect ratio of 8.5. 10 The airfoil has l4Yo thickness/chord ratio, similar to "Nemesis", laminar back to 70Yo chord, but with the section slightly modified by Harry Riblett to add a little camber and leading edge droop to address a little burble outboard experienced at 39. Long span, short chord ailerons provide roll control. FONruUI./T FORUM, JALY 2OO3 ft of The landing gear is attached to the wing, canted 35 deg. forward, and carries the small tires housed in modified 5.00 X 5 wheel pants. The left wheel pant carries the pitot tube. The tail wheel is fixed to the ventral fin and provides an 8 deg. static ground angle. The cockpit, covered by the spacious canopy, houses conventional instrumentation, turn and banh altimeter, airspeed, electronic tach, oil pressure and temperature, and switchable electronic CHT and EGT readout. Radio chores will be covered by a hand held unit. The 5 gallon tuel tank is housed between the firewall and instrument panel. Obviously a successful flight test with The low wing design allows the wing to be removed from the bottom, with the gear attached and a handling dolly no nasty surprises will be necessary before its potential can be proven, but the established front runners are sure to consider David's masterpiece a serious allows the fuselage to be transported. threat. Is it the ultimate design? Not yet. The The aircraft came in heavier than hoped at a little over 600 lbs and David feels that design refinements could shave 20 lbs from another wing. The photos show the urcraft.without wheel pants and leg fairings but it is complete and flight testing at Byron should be under way prior to the 4ft July. The plane is in primer but will be painted white. race horse start is so important that light weight is critical and the AR-6 has a way to go. There is no easy way to accomplish a weight savings program on Would this design have beaten oNemesis"? We will never know, but its performance numbers over established courses and compared with current race planes will tell us if it could have. In any case this is the first unique design to emerge since'Nemesis" and looks like a potential winner. a composite airplane without building new parts. The steel tubular gear could possibly be redesigned but only weighs 12 lbs now. The exhaust system is steel but the trade for engine power may not be worthwhile. We won't need the altimeter and g-meter for racing. I was surprised not to see a more sophisticated wing tip design, but David assures me this was carefully researched. Many thanks to David for allowing us into his hangar at Hayward to see his baby before the christening.
