WE STOOD UP AND FOUGHT BACK United Steelworkers Local 1010 2013 Union Calendar LOCAL 1010 RESPECTING OUR PAST SECURING OUR FUTURE After months of contentious negotiations including the company shutting down all the blast furnaces in an attempt to force us into accepting unreasonable demands, our Union prevailed. I have never been prouder of our membership and retirees. Every one stood up and fought back, old and young alike showed up at the plant rallies in solidarity and support. Next time will be harder start getting ready now! NEW UNION HALL LOCAL 1010 Let’s make 2013 the Safest year ever !! Our safety performance has improved significantly, OSHA Recordable Cases and Lost Time Injuries being the main indicators. I strongly believe this is in part because of our Hazard Recognition Training, new Plant Manager, new Safety Manager, Advocates and our Union Safety Committee. Keep up the good work. As we go to the printer with this calendar we are in the process of buying the Library building at 171st & Grand in Hammond, just South of Morton High School. Closing should occur early next year, and more information will follow. Place and Date: Near Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, 11 April 1970. Entered Service at: Chicago, IL. Born :23 June 1949, East Chicago, Ind. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a machine gunner with Company E. Returning with his squad from a night ambush operation, L/Cpl. De La Garza joined his platoon commander and another marine in searching for two enemy soldiers who had been observed fleeing for cover toward a small pond. Moments later, he located one of the enemy soldiers hiding among the reeds and brush. As the three marines attempted to remove the resisting soldier from the pond, L/Cpl. De La Garza observed him pull the pin on a grenade. Shouting a warning, L/Cpl. De La Garza placed himself between the other two marines and the ensuing blast from the grenade, thereby saving the lives of his comrades at the sacrifice of his life. By his prompt and decisive action, and his great personal valor in the face of almost certain death, L/Cpl. De La Garza upheld and further enhanced the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. TAPS Fading light dims the sight, And a star gems the sky, Gleaming bright. From afar drawing nigh, Falls the night. Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, From the hills, From the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Then good night, Peaceful night, Till the light of the dawn Shineth bright, God is near, do not fear, Friend, good night.
