With regards, Your Sincerely (Dr. Ajit Kumar) ABOUT US National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) was conceptualized by Government of India on persistent demand of the food industry to have an Apex Organisation as a One Stop Solution Provider for the various problems of the sector. Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, has set up this institute with an initial investment of about Rs.500 crore (US $100 million). The Institute is spread over an area of 100 acre at a prime location in close proximity of North Delhi – Haryana border on NH-1. The Institute aims at becoming an international centre of excellence in the area of Food Technology and Management. NIFTEM has been recognized as a Deemed to be University under De-novo Category by the University Grants Commission, Ministry of Human Resource Development. MANDATE NIFTEM has a mandate to work as Sector Promotion Organisation/ Business Promotion Organisation of the food processing sector. Magnificient view of NIFTEM Reception and VC Office Practical exposure to students Second International Conference 3 30 Our Progress Path National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) has been set up by Ministry of Food Processing Industries at Kundli, Distt. Sonepat, Haryana as an apex world class institute to: Ÿ Promote cooperation and networking among existing institutions both within the country and industry bodies; Ÿ Bring in international best practices for improving food processing sector; Ÿ Provide industry friendly short term courses including regular degrees and management courses with equal and complimentary emphasis on research and education. NFTEM became functional from May, 2012 and the classes of first academic session started on 16th August, 2012. During the year 2012-13 the Institute has accomplished the following milestones: 1. INFRASTRUCTURE: Ÿ NIFTEM knowledge Centre (Library) made functional with adequate resources of international level. Ÿ 13 out of 14 Teaching-cum-Research labs made functional. Ÿ Completion of three hostel blocks with full furnishing. Ÿ Completion of horticulture work commensuration the building. Ÿ Sanction of additional power load to ensure adequate supply of electricity. Ÿ Wi-Fi facility in whole campus. Ÿ 100 MBPS internet speed. Ÿ Audio-video lecture recording. Ÿ Centralized attendance management system for faculty, students, officials and non-teaching staff. Ÿ Campus wide local area network. Ÿ Authorized access management system for internet, CCTV, gateway security. Ÿ Centralized back-up system in library. Ÿ On-line counselling system. Ÿ Video conference interview/lecture system. 2. BRAND BUILDING INITIATIVES: Ÿ 22 outreach programmes conducted in various cities across the country. 3. COMMENCEMENT OF ACADEMIC SESSION: Ÿ In 1st batch 115 students in B.Tech (Food Technology and Management) and 88 students in the five streams of M.Tech were admitted for the first academic session 2012-13. Ÿ Video conferencing by foreign/national experts, industry persons every month and one experts lecture each month. Ÿ In 2nd batch 178 students in B.Tech and 85 in M.Tech admitted. Ÿ Ph.D. programme in all the five disciplines has commenced from the Academic year 2013-14 and 11 scholars have been admitted in Ph.D. 4. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: Ÿ Establishment of a Research cell for research activities. Ÿ Internal funding of research projects started. Six projects approved and work started. Ÿ A research project from Indian Council of Medical Research in collaboration with NDRI, Karnal started at a cost of Rs. 31 Lakhs. 4 30 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Ÿ A research project on Bio-char from food industry waste has also been started. Ÿ 22 similar research projects are in pipe-line. INDUSTRY INTERNSHIP OF M.Tech BATCH (2012-14): Ÿ All the students of M.Tech were placed in prominent food processing industries for 5 months industrial internship starting from August, 2013. GRANT OF SCHOLARSHIPS: Ÿ Grant of Fellowship to GATE qualified students admitted in M.Tech. Ÿ Two types of scholarships i.e., Merit Scholarship and Merit cumMeans Scholarships to students. INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION: Ÿ Memorandum of Understanding signed with Wageningen University, The Netherlands, Kansas State University (KSU), Manhattan, U.S.A. and University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), USA for faculty/student exchange programme and for research collaboration. Ÿ 1st batch of 18 meritorious students of B.Tech and M.Tech led by 3 faculty members sent to UNL, KSU & University of Saskatchewan, Canada for 1week/3 week study visit during July-August, 2013. COORDINATION WITH INDIAN INSTITUTIONS: Ÿ ICAR Ÿ CFTRI Ÿ DFRL Ÿ DRDO Ÿ IITs Ÿ IIMs. NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: Ÿ Organised 1st International conference at the campus on innovations in Food processing, value chain management, and food safety on January 10-11, 2013 and workshop on food safety on January 12, 2013. Ÿ Eminent faculty from 12 countries around the world attended the conference. Ÿ Organised National Conference on "Bio-Active compounds and Functional Foods in Health and Disease Management" on 15-16 Nov 2013. Ÿ Organised 2nd International conference at the campus on Emerging food safety risks challenges for developing countries & workshop on food safety on 9-10 January 2014& quality on January 12, 2014. OTHER INITIATIVES: v Creation of Innovation Fund: Ÿ An innovation fund scheme to a limit of 15 lakhs is created to encourage research for NIFTEM students. Ÿ Three proposals received from students. v NIFTEM Industry Forum (NIF): Ÿ NIFTEM industry forum consisting of representatives from micro, small, medium and large industries in food process sector has been set up for building partnerships with the industry. Ÿ Two meeting of NIF held. v Research and Development Council: Ÿ Research and development Council consisting of about 50 members drawn from industry and academia has been set up to chalk out the future research agenda of NIFTEM. Experts from ICAR/CFTRI/CIPHET/DFRL/DRDO/IIT Kharagpur, HBTI Kanpur have been included in the council. Ÿ Two meetings of NRDC held. 5 30 v International Grain Processing Research & Training Centre: • International Grain Processing Research & Training centre has been set up in collaboration with grain industry to function as an international outreach organisation of NIFTEM and to enhance market promotion, consumption and utilisation of Indian cereal grains and their value added products. • The centre has organised an International Short Term Training Programme (STTP) on ‘Extrusion Processing – Technology, Applications and Business Development for the Indian Food and Feed Market’ on April 8-10, 2013 in collaboration with Kansas State University, USA & M/S Wenger, USA. v International Bakery Research and Training Centre: • International Bakery Research and Training Centre has been setup to bring together the world of business opportunities for bakery concerns, • NIFTEM delegation during their visit to Germany held discussions with IREKS GmbH, Germany, a leading company in bakery ingredients. Collaboration arrangement with them is being worked out. v International Centre of Excellence For Food Safety and Quality: • Setting up of an International Centre of Excellence on Food Safety and Quality to address all the related issues in a holistic manner. • Food testing lab would be commissioned in next four months. v Setting up of Professorial Chairs in collaboration with FSSAI, NHB and Industries. v Setting up of Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Corporate Resource Division. It involves a unique blend of food technology and operations management to foster improvement in production processes of food industry. It deals with the design and management of products, processes and services. It considers the acquisition, development, and utilization of resources that firms need to deliver the goods and services, their clients want. The purview of Food Plant Operations Management ranges from strategic to tactical and operational levels. Representative strategic issues include determining the size and location of food manufacturing plants, deciding the structure of service or production system. Tactical issues include plant layout and structure, project management methods, and equipment selection and replacement. Operational issues include production scheduling and control, inventory management, quality control and inspection, traffic and materials handling, and equipment maintenance policies. The students are exposed to advanced lean manufacturing and operation optimizing techniques.
