Tarter Farm and Ranch Equipment is a 66-year-old company still privately owned and operated by the Tarter family and currently operated by the fourth generation of Tarters. As the largest farm and ranch equipment manufacturer in the nation, they make over 1000 SKUs across 10 product categories, and ship product to dealers in all 50 states and Canada. Tarter has total control of all phases of manufacturing, from raw materials to final delivery, which means you can order a complete arena custom-designed exactly the way you need it, and get it right away. Nine-time NFR roper David Key and 2011 world champion Turtle Powell are fans of the chute, which has a head gate that opens no matter how much pressure a steer puts on it, and is easily operated from horseback with faster cycle times so your practice goes smoothly. Chutes by Tarter are extremely quiet, and you can order a lead-up alley that’s longer than most (good for wrapping steers) and a stripping chute with a reversible swing gate, so you can install it facing either direction. The best part is that through the end of May, they’re offering a 10 percent discount on all arena packages. For more information, call or email Roping and Rodeo Product Manager Dale Sorge at Dale.Sorge@TarterGate.com. With Micro-Rain, you not only don’t have to do it, but you also don’t have to fuel up a cumbersome water truck or stay out there for hours moving stationery sprinklers. The Micro-Rain system is a massive sprinkler on wheels that actually runs on water power and shuts off automatically when finished. It travels the length of your arena via a turbine-driven system powered from any water supply (even from a pond or river) before the same water moistens your arena. Deep sand or clods are fine—the cart retracts easily over any landscape, delivering water evenly from side to side at the speed you choose. While standard models water arenas up to 190 feet wide and 450 feet long, you can also customize with higher-speed gearing options and sprinkler head models that can fit any arena. For instance, the huge NRS Arena in Decatur, Texas, uses a Micro-Rain unit with an engine and broader hose to water faster during big events. Finally, because Micro-Rain was created by a major distributor of irrigation systems, its components are made by the best manufacturers in the world and packaged for you in Oklahoma for speedy delivery. Most ropers familiar with Micro-Rain wonder how they ever got by without it. Located in Parma, Idaho, this company was founded in 1907 as a blacksmith shop that later began building specialty farm equipment. Its line of tractor-powered farm equipment skyrocketed in popularity, and it also produced one of the country’s first sugar beet harvesters. You could say these guys wrote the book on big-time tractor implements. While it still markets manure spreaders and irrigation and cultivating equipment, Parma came out 15 years ago with the Parma Arena Groomer. Frequently used on horse arenas and racetracks around the country, the tool prepares the base as well as the top surface. It features vibrating S tines that can be set to your desired digging depth, followed by a leveling bar that will shave off high spots and carry dirt to fill holes as you pass over your ground. At the rear is a roller that conditions the surface and gauges the depth of the tines to leave a uniform finish on your arena. Five widths are available, and now you can even order parts online. Feel free to contact Wade Johnson, the manager of the Arena Groomer Division, or check the web site for a list of dealers. (800) 373-9325, MicroRain.net (208) 722-5116, ParmaCompany.com Prime Metal Buildings Prime Metal Buildings and Design is located in the Cowboy Capital of the World (Stephenville, Texas), so it’s plenty familiar with the needs of ropers. Owned and operated by the Brown family since 1997, Prime is the name on the front of many of the world’s best agricultural buildings, including the NRS facility just outside Decatur, Texas. There, the arena alone boasts 60,000 square feet (150’ x 400’) and it’s adjoined by 56 stalls, wash racks, a pro shop, concessions plus meeting and viewing areas—all covered by one Prime Metal Building. The company not only manufactures the building frames and components themselves, but will help you with design from the first minute of the process through the arena’s evolution. “We’ve seen too many people waste money on outside design services they didn’t need, resulting in expensive planning mistakes,” says Austin Brown. “Our experienced team helps you assess your needs. By understanding your vision, we can design the building of your dreams.” Prime creates preliminary drawings to help you visualize the end result, and they’ll make changes along the way to ensure you get exactly what you want at a price that few can beat—whether it’s a pre-engineered bolt-up structure or a field-fabricated weld-up building. Bob and Jim Kiser have decades of experience creating perfect ground, which is why their drags are used and recommended by the AQHA, NRHA and NCHA—and by guys like Trevor Brazile, Stran Smith and Clinton Anderson. On many of their drags, ABI has the exclusive “Profile Blade” technology that slices parallel to the base, which eliminates ridging and the need to cross-drag your arena. Plus, the new Kiser SpeedMaster—designed specifically for speed events—is the only three-point arena drag with a hydraulic leveling blade independently adjustable from the frame (it also features double rows of hydraulic rippers, grooming rods, a rolling basket to break up clods and a smoothing blade). When you call, you’re connected to a professional arena maintenance specialist who knows what questions to ask to ensure you get exactly what you need within your budget. Financing is also available, and the best part is that you can try a Kiser SpeedMaster risk-free with ABI Equine’s 30-day money-back guarantee. Many times, ordering an arena instead of building one means setting up something that looks temporary or doesn’t match the good-looking outbuildings at your ranch. Red River has an answer for that with their brand-new permanent arenas featuring infinity fencing. “These pens use wood posts with steel rods and it makes a super stout, permanent-looking arena,” says owner Justin Kimmel. “It’s something you’ll want to set up next to a really nice home.” Red River has long known that the same arena doesn’t fit every customer, and the company’s clients run the gamut from a husband and wife who practice on five steers to a guy who might host a round robin every Sunday and needs to hold 100 steers in the return alley. The company is happy to customize your team roping arena or calf roping lane right at their headquarters in Texas using chutes made of pure galvanized steel and guaranteed for five years. If you’re a newcomer to the arena market, the Red River web site has your back, including installation videos and feedback from customers like Ty Murray and Tyler Magnus. CowboyEventFinder.com Special Advertising Section Spin To Win Rodeo’s Arena & Arena Equipment Guide Solar-Powered Q36 Chute The folks who brought you the fully automatic roping chute, the manual chute that has become the official chute of the PRCA—and even a chute that lets you score a steer without letting the steer out—have innovated again. The newest edition to Priefert’s collection of roping chutes is the Q36 Solar Powered Front-Release Chute. It’s a state-of-the-art chute that requires absolutely no electrical cords or air lines—just sunshine. The solar panel is attached to the top of the compact release box and uses the latest patented, high-frequency Pulse technology, while the panel itself is virtually indestructible and weatherproof. The system is also equipped with a battery backup in case you get a few days without enough sunlight to recharge the chute. A single button on the remote control works the chute’s front gate. You can get the solar-powered system as part of a package with a new chute or simply buy it as an upgrade that can be easily installed on any manual Priefert RC98 roping chute. Then you can do like Priefert says, and “practice like you compete” with no power needed. (800) 527-8616, Priefert.com Priefert Arenas There’s nothing like having your own arena, but the thought of building one from scratch can be daunting. The biggest decision is usually whether to build a permanent pen or use portable panels. This is where the Priefert experts can help. Modular arenas are becoming increasingly popular and offer more advantages sometimes than a permanent pen. For instance, panels let you expand or modify over time and can be taken with you if you move. Here are a couple other incentives: they cost less to maintain, are easier to install and are not a taxable asset like a permanent arena, so they likely won’t make your property taxes go up. What’s more, Priefert panels and gates are made with UV inhibitors to resist fading in the sun and are powder-coated with a high-gloss, furniture-quality finish that requires no repainting or rust remediation. They’re also known for their durability. Vertical stays are fitted through drilled rails to increase their strength. Priefert panels and gates are so tough they’re the exclusive equipment of the PRCA and PBR. Finally, Priefert is truly a one-stop shop. You can accessorize your arena with their roping and stripping chutes and their ArenaMaster groomer, which comes with a blade to level your boxes and a water tank for dust control. (800) 527-8616, Priefert.com Reveal 4-N-1 Barrel racers are notoriously pickier about their footing than ropers. It pays to know that Reveal 4-N-1 is the only arena groomer endorsed by the National Barrel Horse Association. This groomer is rugged and works hard to make arena preparation and maintenance easier and less time-consuming. Its front chisel plows are adjusted hydraulically to dig to any depth up to seven inches deep, while the channel iron beams are positioned at angles to move material for leveling and allow you to get at those hard-to-reach areas. The harrow beam can be adjusted hydraulically separate from the chisel plows to a depth of 2.5 inches, which breaks up and aerates your dirt for cushion. Finally, the roller works in conjunction with the harrow beam to further pulverize and firm up your ground. Happily, all of the functions just mentioned can be done at the same time from the comfort of your tractor seat. And plenty of different sizes are available to fit your needs with a versatile three-point hitch hookup. Ground is just made of dirt, but this company will tell you that great footing is made by the Reveal 4-N-1. The brand is owned by Metro Gate—a family owned company founded in 1982 that today is large enough to get the job done (its production facility covers 10 acres in Paris, Texas), but still small enough to care. The foundation of each arena is heavy-duty panel construction, with everything galvanized and powder-coated for durability and available in your choice of colors. Plus, you can expect handy details like lead-ups with tailstops to keep cattle from backing out. Quicksilver offers several arena layout options, from 50-by-300 calf roping lanes to combination sizes and standard 150-by-250 roping pens. The company also offers horse stalls and roping chutes, including Tee Woolman’s favorite—the one-button remote-controlled chute that fellow header Blaine Linaweaver calls the “Cadillac of all roping chutes.” Monthly specials are also usually available. This summer, you can buy a roping arena and Quicksilver will throw in a free scoring lane or trailer panels. That’s why the Ground Hog Arena Tool now comes with its own watering system that works on any size or brand of tractor and any outdoor or indoor arena. “The watering system component was only introduced last year, but has exceeded all our expectations,” says Marketing and Sales Manager Tammy Laakso. The Ground Hog Arena Tool itself was designed in 1996 by Raymond Lucas—a father and grandfather of barrel racers who needed consistent, safe footing. When he looked around at existing groomers, Lucas discovered that rodeo producers were forced to use multiple tools to get great footing for different events. In response, Lucas’ Ground Hog so perfectly grooms an arena for any event that it’s the preferred tool at the National Finals Rodeo and College National Finals Rodeo. Lucas’ small family business has expanded into five different divisions with more than 30 employees. As for the innovative new watering system, it does more than control dust in your arena—it helps the Ground Hog penetrate, rework and finish your arena’s surface. It can be mounted on any Ground Hog, from the 7’ model to the 12’, and is available in blue, green and black. Systems are available to professionally time a wide variety of events, including: Barrel Racing Team Penning Show Jumping Arena & Arena Equipment Guide Tarter Horse Stalls The folks at Tarter Farm & Ranch Equipment thought of everything in manufacturing a new one-of-akind, user-friendly horse stall. The big innovation is in the feed compartment, which is designed like a “lazy Susan” on the lower portion of the stall, so you can access it from outside the stall. “No more lifting hay over your head into the stall or even entering the stall,” says Equine Product Manager Kayla Gooch. The stall door can be mounted to open from the left or right, and its metal grill is hand-welded to reduce sharp edges or corners, with small gaps within the grill to prevent hooves from getting caught. Also, the stall’s rolled tubing on the lumber helps foil cribbers. Finally, the gate locks with just a little push, so it’s unlikely you’ll ever feel that pit in your stomach when you wonder if you locked it or not. The innovation doesn’t stop at the stall itself—the feed door and optional Tarter feeder let your horse eat in a natural feeding position while keeping hay off the ground to save you money. The feeder is also ventilated to reduce dust and mold, and has a drain hole in the bottom for easy cleaning and disinfecting. (800) 733-4283, TarterFarmandRanch.com Southwest Equine Bull Riding Roping Safe-T-Lighting Red Master Harrow As summer approaches, roping in the cool air of the evening takes on a special appeal. If you’re interested in practicing when it cools off, shadows and dark spots just won’t cut it. The guys at Safe-T-Lighting out of Crockett, Texas, are experts at lighting football and baseball stadiums. “We approach our arena lighting like we do any sports venue,” says co-owner Kirk Brenner. “We make sure our lighting levels are fluid so there isn’t much variance. Most of our arenas are lighted like a baseball outfield.” Safe-T-Lighting offers a complete package, including 34-foot galvanized-steel poles delivered inside Texas. Most 150-by-300-foot arenas take seven poles and 14 fixtures, including a pole behind the boxes. For anyone out of state or installing a permanent arena, they’ll drop-ship the fixtures and supply the design and technical support, including the voltage you’ll need and what size wire to run. Brenner has owned the company with Kevin Holbrook since they teamed up in 1996. Coincidentally, they got into lighting arenas when their next-door neighbor, the maker of Outlaw Ropes, wanted his arena lit. “People came and roped there and loved the lighting, so other people started calling us,” says Brenner, who has lit arenas for Speed Williams and Tyler Magnus, among other pro ropers. While several companies sell arena grooming tools, not many offer eight different harrows the way Red Master does. “You don’t have to settle for one tool and hope it will work for your type of ground,” says owner Floyd Fain, a team roper himself. “We can fit any need.” The original Red Master is free-standing, so you don’t have to be a tractor expert to work your ground efficiently. Plus, it provides leveling action and offers double-sided tips for longer-lasting tynes. Two other versions let you choose spring teeth, a leveling float bar, a longer frame length or more adjustable depth. Is your arena mostly clay, so it packs quickly? Check out the new T-Rex, featuring Red Master’s renowned ripper at the front with a paddlewheel and float pin at the rear for smoothing clods and injecting air into the dirt for cushion. There’s also the 22-shank Pulverizer that cuts deep to loosen even the toughest compacted soil. The Reiner creates ground you can slide in, and the Cutter offers a depth of up to seven inches. Finally, the Travel Right is specifically for synthetic footing, and the Mini-Red can be pulled with an ATV. Want more? You can also order a roller to pack your arena pre-rainstorm and a water tank kit with most harrows. For instance the lead-up panels are shorter on the heeler side so it’s easier to wrap steers. And they always have all the items you need in stock, so most arenas are ready to ship right away. Professional cowboys are big fans of Southwest Equine arenas, including Travis Tryan, Todd Suhn, Bobby Harris and recent RodeoHouston champion Justin Davis. The biggest news from Southwest Equine is that it now offers financing, making a new arena easier to buy right away.
