We are pleased to host you in our neighborhood while you visit our participating businesses to sample some of Northern California's finest wines. Wine Walk is an annual fundraising event for the Downtown San Mateo Association, a non-profit organization representing more than 800 businesses in Downtown San Mateo, California. The Wine Walk is the Association’s premier event to help promote and showcase Downtown’s unique character and its abundant shops, restaurants and businesses. Visitors to San Mateo purchase a wine glass and tasting tickets and visit businesses sampling wines and hors d’oeuvres. This event attracts people from all over the Bay Area. Because this event is a celebration of fine wines, we operate under the laws and regulations established by the State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) for festivals and events. We also are very concerned about your safety and well being and want everyone to have an enjoyable evening and return home safely. The Wine Walk is a tasting event that is designed to allow you to sample a wide variety of different wines. The amount of wine that is poured is a sample tasting and we are required under our ABC license that the tasting take place within the street closure boundaries or on premises, so if you are in a business that is not within the street closure area, we ask that you complete your tasting experience within the business before strolling to the next location. Signs will be posted and boundaries clearly marked so you will know where you can or can not go with wine in your glass. We appreciate your help in observing these rules and hope you enjoy Wine Walk 2010! We look forward to your visit and hope you come back. Welcome To Wine Walk 2010! The Downtown San Mateo Association (DSMA) thanks you for joining us for our 15th annual Wine Walk. This year we are pleased to host two dozen wineries from around the world! And to keep things interesting, we have carefully selected a dozen artists to make your walk between tasting locations more interesting. We’ve also responded to requests for a more intimate wine tasting experience, so we added a catered VIP reception with boutique wineries and live jazz. We are constantly striving to bring you an experience that provides “all the ingredients” to enjoy yourselves. This event is a fundraiser to keep the DSMA alive and well. And without our corporate financial sponsors, the 10+ volunteers that plan it, and another 50+ volunteers who help produce it the day-of, none of tonight’s Wine Walk festivities would be possible. Kudos to you all! Downtown San Mateo continues to thrive in very tough economic times. Its very eclectic business mix has served us well. Retail storefront vacancies are surprisingly low compared to neighboring cities’ and interesting new retailers open as soon as a space becomes available. A further testament to downtown’s appeal, and one that makes me the most proud, is the number of technology and media start-up businesses which chose to plant their creative roots here. We are really in the epicenter of what is a huge transformation in how we communicate, obtain information, and conduct our daily lives. The DSMA’s focus is to continuously improve your downtown by responding to consumer demand. Much of it is very nuts-n-bolts. We collaborate with city staff to address such things as the public’s safety, ample parking and sidewalk cleanliness. We strive to improve the overall aesthetic experience as well as looking forward by planning for future greatness. The DSMA is extremely fortunate to have hired one of California’s most sought-after downtown revitalization professionals as DSMA’s new executive director. Rob Edwards has extensive training, experience and tangible successes in managing and improving historic downtowns. Rob and our long-time event manger, Sue Dambrosio, are responsible for the production of this year’s Wine Walk. I would like to also welcome Steve Dworetzky, Senior VP of Business Development & Community Relations of United American Bank as the next president of the DSMA. It has been a pleasure serving as president of the DSMA for the past two years; it has been one of my most rewarding volunteer experiences. I want to thank all downtown San Mateo business owners for allowing me to serve in this position. Everyone please enjoy the 15th Annual Wine Walk! Our best ever! Aromas of dark berry and licorice fill the palate ahead of fine oak tannins, providing a most satisfying finish. Australia’s premier wine regions enjoy ideal maritime climates, perfect for producing our 12 Apostles Chardonnay. Full of fresh fruit flavors, this delightful white opens with tropical fruit on the nose and persists with a smooth citrus and melon finish on the palate. Pouring in the wine garden Wells Fargo Bank Shiraz; Chardonnay Avery Lane Avery Lane offers a wide variety of premium wines from the Columbia Valley, representing some of the finest varietals that Washington State has to offer. The portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling. All of the wines are brimming with fruit and balanced with natural acidity making them perfect to enjoy on their own or with your favorite foods. Pouring at HSBC 277 S. B Street Cabernet Sauvignon; Riesling Bad Dog Ranch Welcome to Bad Dog Ranch Vineyards, home of Bad Dog himself and a line of California varietal wines expertly crafted and deliciously blended for easy-to-drink finishes and easy-to-take prices. When Bad Dog was a puppy, he had the pain-in-the-hind-quarters habit of playing upside-down fetch with newly planted baby grapevines. That’s just how he got his name-o. He’s lived up to it too, and then some. But His Mastiffness does have his strong suits. Number one, he particularly enjoys keeping the place free of pesky varmints—not to mention pesky wine snobs. But better still, it turns out Bad Dog has an uncanny nose for grapes. Like clockwork, when he starts eating the fruit off the vines, we know it’s time to harvest. We love that, because our varietal grapes have to be picked at the peak of ripeness for the big, bold flavor that’s making our BDR wines famous. Try our Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, or Pinot Grigio and our latest arrivals at the ranch—Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. With friends, at a backyard BBQ, on any old occasion—we promise a BDR wine will never do you wrong. Pouring at 3 Bees Coffee 244 E. 3rd Ave Petite Sirah; Pinot Grigio Pouring in the wine garden B Street Boxing Cabernet; Chardonnay Cardiff Cellars Cardiff Cellars Chardonnay shines with tropical and citrus fruit flavors against a backdrop of toasty vanilla. The full production Wine Estate hosts wine tasting guests daily in the old-world Chateau and is home to over 1200 aging oak barrels of wine. Winemaker Bill Anderson joined proprietors Bob & Patty Brower with the first vintage, producing the winery's premier 100% Merlot. Today, with over 25 vintages produced, the tradition and commitment to consistent, uncompromising quality continues with the Wine Estate's flagship Merlot and new Proprietary Red Blends. Drytown Cellars is the brainchild of Allen Kreutzer, shown here at the winery. Allen is a veteran of winemaking and vineyard management. He earned his BS in Fermentation Science at UC Davis in 1980, and after stints as a cellar rat and mobile wine bottler with the pioneer Chateau Bottlers, he started making wine with Pedrizzetti in Morgan Hill. Allen obtained a Masters degree in Agricultural Chemistry from Fresno State in 1990. Over the years, Allen has worked for a number of wineries, either in winemaker positions or as consulting enologist, including Washington Hills Cellars in the Yakima Valley and Charles Mitchell Winery in Fairplay. Pouring at J’me Boutique 60 E. 3rd Ave Estate Syrah; Viognier Emerald Bay California’s coastal grape growing region presents an ideal climate for Emerald Bay wines. Cool ocean breezes and coastal mountain ranges maintain moderate temperatures throughout the growing season enabling the grapes to stay on the vines longer. These extra days on the vine allow the grape flavors to intensify and represent the true varietal character. Pouring at Carlyle Jewelers 67 E. 4th Ave Cabernet Sauvignon; Chardonnay Fantelli Congress Springs Vineyard A graduate in Political Science, Daniel Gehrs had developed an interest in wine while at university. He managed to obtain an entry level position at Paul Masson Vineyards in 1974. Soon after he and his wife Robin discovered a derelict mountain vineyard, with head-pruned Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc vines dating back before Prohibition. The vineyard was on Congress Springs Road, so they named it Congress Springs Vineyards. The vines are still in production today. The goal of this growing winery is to produce a complete line of viticulture products. In order to reach that goal, we are growing high quality varietals, improving the harvesting systems and incorporating techniques and incorporating techniques that allow the production of super premium wines, contributing to the growing reputation of Argentine wines both nationally and internationally. In the early 90’s, Al dreamt of a large horn-based band playing R & B music and began his search for musicians. Through his musical connections, Al obtained a professional horn section: Lee Cahalan (Trumpet), Russ Renzas (Trumpet), Paul Siebel (Trombone), Dennis Marenberg (Alto Sax), Mark Heckman (Baritone Sax), and Tony7 Serrano (Tenor Sax). Guitarist Toby Garza responded to Al’s ad and soon became the band’s Musical Director. Toby called in his old rhythm section James Stewart (Bass Guitar) and Chris Alcobendas (Drums). Ken Nelson’s keyboard adds a magical touch to each selection. Suddenly the band took form and with lead singer Christine Noble, and West Bay Rhythm was born. The legendary trumpet player Fred Berrry performs with the band on special occasions. West Bay Rhythm has been leaving audiences spellbound with their horn-based mix of old and new R & B and Funk. Today, third generation brothers George E., Gene, and Gary keep the family tradition alive by producing award-winning, premium varietal wines from more than 100 acres of Santa Clara Valley estate vineyards — as well as wines from other premium winegrowing regions within California. Guglielmo wines reflect the tradition and dedication to their family’s cultural heritage — and celebrate one of the simple pleasures of life. Pouring at Junior Gym 101 S. Later, he became Vice President of National Sales at Parrot Company, the marketing organization for California's famed Wente Bros. and Louis Martini wineries. In 1983, Tom started his own venture, Halby Marketing, Inc., just off the Square in the town of Sonoma. One of the investors was the now infamous Jess Jackson and the company's first client was a small, then unknown Lake County winery called Kendall-Jackson. Tom utilized his sales skills and industry knowledge to develop a national distribution network for Kendall-Jackson and the incredible success of the winery is still unrivaled in the industry. After Kendall-Jackson assumed its own marketing, Tom played a key role in the success of many other important California wineries, Clos Pegase, Robert Pepi, Steele and Hanna, to name just a few. Tom also began importing carefully selected wines and spirits and the Halby Marketing portfolio now includes an impressive collection of products from around the globe, including Canada, France, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, South Africa and China. Now, after forty years in the wine business, for the first time, Tom Halby has put his own name on the label. He has personally selected premium California and international wines that he is proud to call his own. From the elegant packaging, to the rich tasting wines inside, the quality is evident throughout. No matter which wine you choose, Thomas Halby Winery always represents great values. Michael's love for his family and the life they chose is what eventually led him to obtain a Viticulture & Enology degree at Fresno State University. Sitting out on the patio overlooking the Napa Valley, eating toasted almonds and sipping fine sparkling wine, Rich Hartenberger uttered those fateful words: “Dad, why don’t you take some of your money and buy a winery, and Michele and I will run it for you?” It seemed like such a good idea that Rich’s brother Mike soon joined the bandwagon. Robert, Mary Jane, Michael, Richard and Michele Hartenberger founded the Midnight Cellars Winery and Vineyard in March 1995. The Midnight adventure has now celebrated the 10th anniversary of its founding in 1995. Jazz Cellars is focused on producing rich and complex hand-crafted wines for those that enjoy great food, great company, great music and, of course, great wine. Cooling afternoon winds and summer evening fog help create conditions that produce wines with classic acidity and structure, while displaying the lovely depth of flavor for which Carneros wines are renowned. The primary grape varieties on their estate are Merlot and Chardonnay with smaller plantings of Syrah, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Most of the grapes are sold to prominent Sonoma and Napa Country wineries. Pat and Joe hold back a very small portion of the best fruit from their property for their own label, which was established in 1996. Their estate wines are crafted by winemaker, Julia Iantosca, Julia has a masterful touch of maintaining the varietal fruit flavors that are so prominent in this appellation. All of these wines express the estate vineyard from where they were grown, and are priced as exceptional values. Avenue Art A collective of local artists creating paintings in acrylics, oils, water colors; photographers, mixed media artists, jewelry and textiles. B Sharp Art I have been inspired by a variety of physical and emotional moments in my life. I am a Northern California artist, who began working in glass 13 years ago when my husband brought home a microwave kiln from the local hobby store. That was the beginning of my new direction - warm glass (or fused glass as many people know it). Glass is incredible! I love how light reflects through it to reveal its individual properties of character, color, saturation and tone. It is breath-taking! The fact that this liquid can be a solid mass and vice-versa, is just astounding to me. Glass is one of those truly remarkable mediums to work with. She works primarily with sterling silver, which she forms, hammers and solders. She has recently started working with Precious Metal Clay which when fired is pure silver. It allows her to make detailed pieces, like leaves, and other more complex forms. She is inspired by architecture, different cultural traditions and in particular, the Japanese visual aesthetic, which embraces simplicity, texture, asymmetry and nature. Royal Redneck Handmade Gifts and Necessities for the Eco Conscious Shopper. "I try to use something recycled in all my creations. Every time I look at something, I try to figure out how to re-purpose it without being too obvious. That is my inspiration too. I see something and think: How can I improve this, make it green, reusable or at least last longer? Like cloth napkins, reusable shopping bags or crochet dish scrubbies. Sometimes I see something old and just want to give it a modern spin. Everything in my shop is made right here in California. Think Global Act Local is important to me." ME Designs Lis considers art an important part of her life. She says, "It is a source of calmness and expression for me." She began working with metal in 2000 and received her certification in Precious Metal Clay shortly thereafter. Lis believes that working with metal clay has brought her such freedom of design that she developed an absolute passion for making jewelry.
