Conveniently located at the intersection of one of Japan’s major rivers and the Seto Inland Sea, throughout the
centuries Osaka, which is known as the “water city”, was a principle center of trade and cultural exchange with
not only other areas in Japan, but also parts of mainland China and the Korean peninsula. During the Middle
Ages, the city was a base for religious pilgrimages to the many temples and shrines in the region and later came
to be known as the “nation’s kitchen” on account of the central role that it plays in distribution. Today, Osaka is
developing as a hub for the production of next-generation robots, combining a rich cultural past with a sophisticated high-tech future that provides countless attractions for visitors and residents alike.

A City that has Always
Thrived Around Water
Thanks to its convenient location, Osaka has
developed as the gateway to Japan, serving as a
center for international trade and cultural interaction. It had its own port by the 5th century and
by the 17th century, the city had become a center
of distribution for the rest of Japan, with many
specialty products from the provinces finding
their way to Osaka. The canals and bridges that
were built by the people to facilitate the
movement of goods helped to shape the city and
their influence can still be seen to this day.
Riverside attractions include the tree-lined banks
of the gently flowing rivers in the Okawa~
Nakanoshima area, the lively Dotombori area and
the Bay area with its new amusements and theme
parks.

Immersed in the Romance of History
From around the 5th century through to the 8th century, Osaka was
declared the nation’s capital several times and played a major role in
trade and cultural exchange. Later, the city served as a base for the
pilgrimage routes to areas such as Kumano.
Osaka Castle was constructed during the 16th century by Hideyoshi
Toyotomi, who managed to unify the various warring factions within
Japan, and during the 17th century, the city became a center for trade
and distribution activities and was referred to as the “nation’s kitchen”.
Underpinning this prosperity were the city’s resourceful and enterprising
merchants, who introduced the world’s first futures trading system.
The city is full of historic places, especially on the Uemachi plateau that
runs north to south through the city. Osaka Castle and the remains of
Naniwanomiya Palace are located in the north, Shitennoji, which is one
of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, is located in the central area,
and Sumiyoshi-taisha Grand Shrine, which is said to have been built in
the 3rd century, is located further to the south.

Delicious & Distinctive
Osaka-Style Food
CITY OF CULINARY DELIGHTS
From ancient times, Osaka has been a lively
center of economic and commercial activity
located on both overland and maritime
trading routes. In latter years it came to be
known as the “nation’s kitchen” on account
of the central role that it plays in the
distribution of seasonal produce from
throughout Japan. Blessed with an environment rich in a wide range of foods, the
people of Osaka have inherited a traditional
food culture that boasts a style and flavor
that is unique in Japan.
A distinctive feature of this food culture is
the use of fish stock, which is known as
“dashi.” Used to bring out the natural taste
of ingredients and to enhance the aroma of
dishes ranging from everyday udon and
takoyaki (octopus dumplings) to the most
sumptuous of gourmet dishes, “dashi” is
the epitome of Osaka’s food culture and
even today has an ongoing influence on the
food culture of Japan. In addition to the
many traditional Japanese restaurants in
Osaka, there are also more modern
restaurants that have incorporated cooking
styles and techniques from other areas of
Japan and from overseas, as well as
restaurants with famous chefs cooking
French and Italian cuisine, and world-class
patisseries. The huge range of top-class
cuisine available means that visitors are
sure to find something exceptional as they
explore this gourmet city.

In Osaka, in June of 2008, organizations related to the restaurant industry in cooperation with educational
institutions, the government and various business groups formed the Gourmet City ‒ Osaka Promotion Council
in order to further promote the food culture of Osaka to the world. Then in September 2008, Osaka joined the
Délice network of Good Food Cities of the World.
Established in the city of Lyon in France in September 2007, the aim of the Délice network is to bring together
cities whose food cultures are an important part of their identities. The organization also seeks to foster and
promote these food cultures and enhance the spirit of fine dining, while encouraging intercultural exchanges
among member cities.
Osaka is the first city in Japan and only the second city in Asia to join this network, following China s
Guangzhou, and its acceptance is proof of the city s worldwide reputation as a gourmet city. The city is
determined to make the most of this opportunity to showcase Osaka s unique food culture to the world.

THE PERFORMING ARTS
Old and New Performing Arts
Osaka boasts a wide range of traditional performing arts,
including noh, kyogen, bunraku and kamigata kabuki.
Bunraku, which was registered by UNESCO as a World
Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003, is a form of traditional
puppet theater that originated in Osaka more than 300 years
ago. Accompanied by shamisen music and narrative song,
puppeteers manipulate the puppets to create subtle movements
and expressions.
One of the characteristics of kamigata kabuki is the way in which
it realistically portrays a wide range of social obligations, human
emotions and romance. In 2005 this too was registered as a
World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Noh and kyogen
are performed throughout the year at the Noh Theater, while in
summer Takigi Noh (noh performed in the light of burning
torches) is performance outdoors.
A wide range of concerts and musicals are always being held in
the many halls and venues throughout the city at which people
can enjoy artists from throughout Japan and around the world.

If you want to really experience Osaka, make sure you visit one
of the many shopping areas where you’re bound to find
something you like.
Close to any of the major railway terminals you will always find a
large department store, under which you will discover
underground shopping areas that seem to go on forever. It is
said that Osaka has the largest underground shopping area in
Japan in terms of shop floor space. It also boasts the country’s
longest shopping street (Tenjimbashisuji shopping street) and the
Shinsaibashisuji shopping street, famous throughout Japan
since the 18th century.
Another feature of Osaka is the many specialized shopping
areas. Matsuyamachisuji shopping street boasts many toy
wholesalers stocking traditional Japanese items ranging from
Japanese dolls through to New Year decorations, hina dolls and
carp streamers. You can find everything you could possibly
need when starting a restaurant in the Sennichimae Doguyasuji
street and in Nippombashi Den-Den Town you will find every
conceivable kind of home appliance and computer equipment,
along with animation-related products and high-tech parts for
robotics difficult to come across anywhere else.

CASTLE
OSAKA CASTLE
Castle Fortifications
The castle walls and turrets were designed and built during the Edo period (17th∼Mid19thC)
to prevent any hostiles from entering the Castle. The two-story Inui turret and the powder
magazine with its stone walls and ceilings are places of special interest. Thirteen of the
buildings in the castle complex have been designated as important cultural assets.
The Four Seasons of Osaka Castle Park
The historic buildings of the Osaka Castle complex blend in with the
natural splender of this 106.7ha site that is located right in the heart of
Osaka. In the spring, people come to enjoy the plum blossoms (1,250
trees of 93 varieties) and the cherry blossoms (approx. 600 trees in
Nishinomaru Garden), while in the fall they come to see the enchanting
autumn colors.
Folding Screen of the Osaka Summer Campaign Important Cultural Property, Japanese Government
Timeless, Majestic, Beautiful
Construction of Osaka Castle commenced in 1583
by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who aimed to unify Japan
as a nation. Two years later, the main tower was
completed and used as a command post. This was
burned down after the Toyotomi clan was killed in
1615 and although it was rebuilt during the Tokugawa Period, it was struck by lightning in 1665 and
was once again reduced to ashes. It remained in
ruins for 266 years until 1931 when it was rebuilt to
once again grace the Osaka skyline, this time with
the help of public donations. Another restoration
project was started in 1995 to restore the main
tower to its former splendor, after which this muchloved dynamic symbol of Osaka was registered by
the government as a tangible cultural asset.
Items on Display at Osaka Castle
More than 8,000 important cultural assets are stored in the main tower of
Osaka Castle, the most impressive of which is the folding screen
painting depicting the summer battle of Osaka. In this masterpiece that
is said to have been commissioned after the battle by the Fukuoka
feudal lord Nagamasa Kuroda, the commander of the eastern forces, the
various facets of the battlefield are clearly depicted, such as the castle
and town prior to their destruction and the terrible confusion in the
surround areas. Other items include many good examples of the
writings, armor and weapons, pictures and woodblock prints.

Sakai is known for its keyhole shaped ancient burial mounds that date back
to the 5th century. The city was also home to Sen no Rikyu, the greatest
master of the tea ceremony. Traditional Japanese sweets are still made in the
city, and the scenery within the city still bears some resemblence to the Sakai
of the middle ages, especially on account of the moats that still exists around
the burial mounds.
In Nara boasts many beautiful locations, such as Asuka, where Buddhist
culture first became established, and the expansive Nara Park. In addition,
there are beautiful walkways that wind their way around the base of the
mountains and places such as Hase, Murou and Yoshino, which is famous for
its cherry blossoms.
