Mar/Apr 2016 Shorelines Newsletter Delivery Survey
March/April 2015 March/April 2015 Shorelines Newsletter Delivery Survey The Communications Committee conducted a survey to see if residents are willing to read the Shorelines news online. The South Down newsletter is currently mailed to each owner's address on record with Harvard Management. It is also available on our website: www.SDShores.com. The South Down Council is reviewing whether it is beneficial to limit the hard-copy versions of the newsletter sent by mail, since it is available online. Some of the reasons to go electronic are Costs, the Labor/Effort to create, publish and mail, and Timeliness to get information out to our residents. An online survey was developed and the link was emailed to owners of South Down. 70% of the owners who were sent the link completed the survey, which is an excellent response rate. It was also impressive how many comments and valuable feedback were received. The Communications Committee has forwarded the results to the Council to aid in their evaluation. SDRA website: www.sdshores.com LBHOA website: www.longbayassociation.com Message from the SDRA President Bruce Miller Red Sox spring training is in full swing; hope springs eternal and winter predictably does not. As of this writing, it has been the winter that wasn’t in New Hampshire. Paugus Bay has waves rather than ice, and fishermen (and fisherwomen) everywhere are cursing El Nino. The pond hockey tournament has been moved to Waukewan due to a lack of ice in Meredith bay and there has not been any word regarding the dog sled races. This will all be in the rear view mirror by the time you read this. As we move into spring and subsequently summer, I thought that I would dedicate this edition of the President’s Letter to sports fandom in the lakes region. Most of us have seen our athletic glory days pass, but remain sports enthusiasts, none the less. There are ample opportunities in the lakes region to take in interesting (and obscure) athletic events. The newly renamed “Winnipesaukee Muskrats” of the New England College Baseball League (NECBL) play at Robbie Mills Field right around the corner from South Down Shores. Single game tickets are a mere $5 and kids get in free. The NECBL is one of the country’s most competitive college baseball development leagues and it has produced a number of players that have gone on to play in the majors. http://winnipesaukeemuskrats.pointstreaksites.com/ view/winnipesaukeemuskrats Nearby Portland is home to the Portland Hurling Club (stop snickering) which is sponsored by….drum roll…Guinness. Hurling is a sport of ancient Gaelic and Irish origin which has been played for over 3,000 years. The object of the game is for players (using a wooden stick called a hurley) to hit a small ball (called a sliotar) between the opponents’ goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for a goal worth three points. The Portland Hurling Club schedule can be found on their webpage: http://www.portlandhurling.com/index.php?p=home The New Hampshire Boat Museum runs an annual Vintage Race Boat Regatta in Wolfboro Bay. Vintage boats in classes from small outboards to Grand Prix hydroplanes run heats on a one mile oval course. It is possible to get pit passes and even a ride on a race boat. The Regatta is scheduled for September 14, 2016 through September 16, 2016. http://www.nhbm.org/vintage-race-boat-regatta/ New Hampshire Motor Speedway will host a number of races in 2016 including the New Hampshire 301 (July 17, 2016) and the New England 300 (September 25, 2016). But in my opinion, the premier event of the season is “Extreme Chunkin” (October 15, 2016, October 16, 2016). Competitive teams from across the country will use trebuchets, catapults and air cannons to launch pumpkins. http://www.nhms.com/events/extreme_chunkin/ One of my favorites is the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association’s Grass Drags and Watercross held in Freemont New Hampshire on Columbus Day weekend. This three day event includes snowmobile grass drag racing with speeds reaching 115 mph. In addition, there is water cross racing in which snowmobiles race (skim) on water on straight line and oval courses. Invariably, some sink and they use a buoy attached to the snowmobile to find and fish it out. Notice NEW: Golf cart owners can now submit registration for their golf carts using an online form. The form is filled in by the owner and electronically sent to Harvard. Harvard reviews the form and confirms back to the owner within 3-5 business days. If the owner does not get confirmation by 5 business days they should contact Harvard Management. Turning off your water when you leave for 24 hours or more can greatly reduce the possibility of damage, especially during power outages. If your unit is unattended, it is a good idea to leave your key with a neighbor for emergency access and to have them periodically check the unit during your absence. It was a two-week cruise from Bridgetown, Barbados through the Panama Canal to Balboa/Panama City, Panama via the Grena-dines; St. Georges, Grenada; Isla Margarita and Isla Blanquilla, Venezuela; Kralendjik, Bonaire; Willemstad, Curacao; Oranjestad, Aruba; Cartagena, Colombia; the San Blas Islands, Panama; and a transit of the Panama Canal. We also had three full days at sea, two days from Aruba to Cartagena and one day from Cartagena to the San Blas Islands.. The ship is the S.P.V. Star Flyer, part of the Star Clippers fleet, a 360-foot, 4masted (16 sails totaling 36,000 sq. ft.) barkentine, yes, a sailing ship. The company has 3 sailing ships and cruises in the Med, the Far East, the Caribbean as well as ocean crossings (delivery cruises). Cruises run from 3 to 28 days. It carries 160 passengers; We were part of a group of 58 members of the United States Power Squadrons from around the country. Other passengers were from the US and several European coun-tries. Right is a photo of Star Flyer off the San Blas Islands with 15 of her sails deployed. And check out the ship docked in St. Georges, Grenada. The ship on the other side of the dock is the Ce-lebrity Summit. If you look closely, you'll see that the masts of the Star Flyer (the tallest is 226 feet high) are taller than the Summit. As we departed St. Georges before the Summit; many passengers on that ship watched and waved as we sailed away. I think they might have been a bit jealous. The ship has one dining room, a library, several lounges, a bar, two small swimming pools and plenty of water toys for the use of the passengers. There were land excursions available (at extra cost) at each of the stops; at most of the stops, you could just walk around the cities we were docked at on your own or get a taxi and create your own excursion. The atmosphere aboard ship is very laid-back and casual; no coats and ties required. The only dress requirement is that men have to wear slacks and collared shirts at dinner and the ladies have to wear slacks or skirts with blouses or dresses at dinner. The rest of the time is shorts/shirts or bathing suits/cover-ups. There were varied daily shipboard activities, both during the day and in the evening. One morning I climbed the rigging to the first crows nest on the forward mast; the views of the ship from there were amazing. The final activity was a talent show with both passengers and crew participating; it was great. The transit of the Panama Canal was a very interesting experience. The locks, both on the Caribbean side and the Pacific side were really neat, still functioning after 100 years. Panama is building additional locks, much larger than the existing locks, on both ends of the canal to accommodate larger commercial ships; the new locks are scheduled to be in service this year. After we exited the canal on the Pacific side we had to pass under the Bridge of the Americas, part of the Pan American highway that runs from Canada to South America. Our masts were so tall that we had to time our passage under the bridge to be at the lowest of low tide; if we didn't make that 15-minute window, we'd have had to wait until the next low tide (the next morning) to try again. We made it the first time. The crew, from the captain on down, were very friendly and helpful. They are from multiple countries. So if you want an interesting and unique cruising experience on a small sailing ship, Google either "Star Flyer" or "Star Clippers" to find out about the company and the ships. At the Annual meeting the membership voted to make repairs to the docks and stain this spring. This may delay placing boats in the slips until after May 15th. I will keep you up to date as we go along. The Membership discussed the demand on dry berths in 2015 and how it will affect Long Bay property owners moving forward. It was decided, for 2016 SDRA dry berths will be offered to SDS property owners first. They will have until March 15th to commit to renting a dry berth. Any SDRA dry berths available, after March 15th will then be offered to Long Bay property owners. Priority will be based on longevity of previous rental. PWC moorings will not be offered to anyone who is not a Boat Club member. (Member - one who owns a dry berth or boat slip.) Remember to notify me of any changes to your - mailing address, email, phone number. New Boat Approval forms are required from anyone bringing a boat into the Boat Club for the first time. If needed, they can be downloaded at www.sdshores.com or contact me and I will be happy to send you one. Have a Great Day! December 8th Annual Christmas Party Location to be determined Message from the LBHOA President Dick Bordwell As I write this letter, it is amazing to see that Lake Winnipesaukee is 80% clear of ice. We could be in for an early season for outdoor events and of course our boaters, kayakers, and canoe riders, this year. I want you to know that while things have been relatively quiet with our committees at this time of year, we continue to actively prepare for all the events that will make this an enjoyable time for all. The Board is currently planning for the following events this year, and as I noted in my past letter, the Clubhouse has moved to the top of our agenda. There will be more to review in this newsletter as well as upcoming articles. Long Bay Priorities for 2016 Clubhouse – This will be a two stage assessment and you will be asked to voice your opinions during this process. The first stage will be required repairs to the external structure of the clubhouse. These repairs will take place prior to the Annual Meeting. The second stage will be the renovation of the clubhouse itself internally to reflect an updated and functional area for Long Bay resident use. Various plans for this will presented at the Town Hall and Annual Meetings for vote and funding. South Down Front Gate Project – This is a major project to relieve congestion, reduce damage, improve security, ease access for contractors, and allow for closed gates during our key summer holidays which is currently restricted by Laconia due to the backups that are caused on route 106. Long Range Planning – This is the financial planning that takes place to assure that all of our amenities are planned for 20 years out, and the Operating Reserve is suitably funded to handle the required projects thus eliminating the need for special assessments. Long Bay Roads Paving – Paving of our roads occurs every 20 -25 years and this is a major expense for which we utilize the reserve budget. This year we will pave Teddington Way and Oakleigh Drive. We have moved the paving of Cowpath Lane to 2017. Beach Furniture – We will expand the new furniture we have had on the main beach the last two seasons, now to the North Beach. Our beaches are being used more than ever and Long Bay is continuing to grow as a community. Key Meeting Dates Village Presidents – March 12 @ 8:00 am Teleconference Town Hall Meeting – July 9th @ 9:00 am Beane Center Annual Meeting - - August 20th @ 9:00am Beane Center Most sincerely, Dick Bordwell President, LBHOA II COMMITTEE UPDATES New Members in Long Bay: Please welcome the following new families to Long Bay Steve & Elizabeth Burdeau 155 Long Bay Drive Garden Committee – The Long Bay Garden Committee is still on vacation.
