The sage colored home features reclaimed wood, pops of red reclaimed barn wood, light colored wooden deck, and a tin roof which adds rustic flair and homage to the natural surroundings. This parkitecture inspired home serves as a getaway from reality for this bustling family and presents a blend of the owners’ ideas and the builder, Kevin Malon’s, ability to create a unique home from years of experience and the fountain of creativity he taps into for every building project he dives into. Kevin Malon 605-484-3730 lmalon@rushmore.com www.mtnwoodwork.com This family home opens with large two inch thick alder wood double doors, handcrafted from Montana with the strength of the west to withstand any harsh mountainside winter. Upon walking in you are encompassed in a high ceiling and open floor plan constructed with a light timber frame, which was built on site. The living room area, fireplace, and kitchen space are all a blend of the soft gray painted walls, rusted tin, and patches of the red reclaimed barn wood. The trim and windows of the home are whitewood pine, accented by darker stain. Besides the gray tiles in the entrance way, the floor showcases blue stained bug-wood, laid to create “little walkways” instead of creating butt joints with the wood. This allows for a cleaner look and matches the technique used on the deck on the front of the home which does not use butt joints, but clean cuts of wood instead. The dining area boasts a handmade dining table which the owner constructed from an antique church stained glass window. Above towers a black matte globe lighting fixture shining light on the handmade wine rack, made of reclaimed wood, a rusted hook, and rope. Another unique feature between the dining area and the kitchen space is an antique Coke machine, which still spits out the occasional pop for this family on the go. 10 • April 2014 A kitchen island featuring the barn wood and bits of tin resides in the center of the kitchen featuring black granite with speckles of tan accents. Above hangs a handmade lighting unit, which Kevin created from reclaimed wood, bulb-like antique glass, and rope. The counter space uses a different granite, which is mostly tan with black accents, but still compliments the home’s color scheme and the slick stainless steel stove top, sink, and refrigerator. An important concept of the home for both the owners and the builder, was to create a home which flowed while implementing Continued on page 12 www.blackhillsbuilderinfo.com • 11 Continued from page 10 elements throughout to create harmony. To tie in the reclaimed barn wood, originally from Sioux City, Iowa, above the kitchen cabinetry, Kevin incorporated the barn wood to create a balance in the room. Walking down the hallway, the home has a mudroom area where children’s helmets, shoes, and sports equipment are tucked away in hand crafted shelving, which Kevin constructed from reclaimed wood and leftover granite from the kitchen space, little touches creating a living space with balance. Further down the hall sliding dark wood doors roll back to feature a bathroom with shower, handmade vanity with accents of barn wood, and a bowl-like granite vessel sink beneath a stainless steel waterfall-like spout. Next to the hallway bathroom another sliding door reveals a tan painted guest bedroom, filled with bits of the owners’ creativity. A window casts light into the spare bedroom, where an antique wooden toolbox is hung sideways on the wall with clothes hangers on the handle for a guest’s clothes to be hung and the bed’s headboard was created from stalks of old fence posts and reclaimed corrugated red metal. Across the hall from the guest bedroom, the master bedroom slides into view behind another sliding dark stained door. The master bedroom draws on the rustic look of the home, and the bed rests upon a wall created entirely from the red barn wood Continued on page 14 12 • April 2014 24/7 Emergency Service No over time charges - ever! The nearby window shines on the grains of the wood showing the deep intricacies of the grain and subtle strokes of red throughout. A black double-headed antique ceiling fan keeps the room cool and heralds the antique touches the owners love. Attached to the master bedroom, the master bathroom has a unique handmade shower encased in corrugated silver metal with a gray, tan, and cream pebble floor. The shower also has built-in gray tile shelves for bathroom amenities. Barn wood is beneath the sink with granite used earlier in the home. The owner used an old pipe attached to reclaimed wood to create a one-of-a-kind towel rack and above the white porcelain toilet a vintage milk crate is attached to the wall for another one-of-a-kind shelving unit. An old fashioned white soaking tub brings nostalgia to the room, while the thin modern faucet which creates a waterfalllike flow into the tub, pinpoints the modern luxuries this home has to offer. Moss rock from the Black Hills creates the hearth and framework of the fireplace. The timber wood mantel piece is lined with eclectic antiques ranging in bottles to vintage boxes and the stone chimney is topped by rusted metal and cut in a slope to recreate the feel of rustic barn roof. In the corner of the living area, a trap door opening to the basement was created, so the family could use their rock wall built from the basement that rises to the upstairs living room. The furniture of the living room balances with the colors and mediums of the home, with dark brown leathers, a brown and white spotted cow hide area rug, and sanded down pieces of telephone poles for end tables shows the owners creativity and love of upcycling items into new uses. From the living room space guardrails made of timber and galvanized mesh lead up a stair case of light toned timber where at the top a carpeted loft bedroom looks out into the open space of the floor plan below. In this area hidden closets open from the walls for storage and an antique bedroom set, with a matching card table, create a comfortable space to relax. Following soft neutral colored carpet downstairs leads to an open play area for the children and a place for adults to relax and watch television. The basement houses built-in shelving filled with toys, a ping pong table, pool table, and an arcade-like air hockey table. In the corner of the room a plush sofa surrounds a handmade corner shelf produced by Kevin, with barn wood and displays a television, perfect for family movie nights or when the children’s friends come for sleepovers. On the wall adjoining the handcrafter shelf, the owner created pallet art with the quote, “Wake up in the morning, and put on love.” A simple mantra and yet, another unique detail, making this house a home. Down the hall of the basement, the children’s room presents six hand crafted bunk beds built into the walls of the room. The bunk beds are crafted two-toned from reclaimed gray stained wood and barn wood with soft touches of red hues. Each bunk bed offers the perfect space for the children, and even feature a small triangular shelf in the corner, for lanterns to rest for late night reading. Next to the children’s room, a bathroom with sand-like colored and textured tile creates a unique touch to the downstairs area. Another granite counter top with a bowl like sink allows for easy clean ups for the children. The owners and Kevin created a childproof towel rack from reclaimed wood and giant blue hooks, to add a bit of child-like zing to the bathroom space. meticulous attention to detail 605.209.3341 i jjcUsTomhomes.com P.o.
