Cape Ann By The Road
Cape Ann, a small cape along
Boston’s North Shore reaching
eastward into the sparkling waters
of Massachusetts Bay and the
Atlantic Ocean, is truly a gem
whose qualities and attractions,
like fne wine, just keep getting
better with time. Thanks to wide
scale conservation efforts that
have preserved its marshlands,
beaches and historic areas, Cape
Ann’s unsurpassed beauty and
allure endure. Indeed our region
has long been a favorite location
for Hollywood flm productions
because of its unspoiled,
authentic landscapes and rugged
beauty.
Visitors fnd that they can savor a
relaxing porch view of the Atlantic
Ocean at an historic inn along
the Rockport shore, walk along
pristine wide open beaches or
dine at quaint, family-owned
restaurants. Cape Ann is famed
for its fried and steamed clams
and visitors have many options
from clam shacks to gourmet
eateries. They can shop at unique
boutiques and antique stores,
cast off a dock and sail around
spectacular harbors, see world
class art, dig into history and
enjoy the stories of our earliest
settlers whose homes remain
intact to this day.
So, turn your wheel toward Cape
Ann this season – it is easy to
reach by car or train and it offers
worlds of delightful experiences.
By road, the best way to see Cape
Ann is to travel along our scenic
roadways. Starting – for example
– by exiting route 128 or major
highways and traveling along the
newly designated Essex Coastal
Scenic Byway that locals simply
call Routes 127 and 133. This
byway takes one past beautiful
seaside estates and coastal
marshes and bays and offers an
unprecedented view of our region.
Scenic coastal Route 127 arrives
in Cape Ann by way of the town
of Manchester-by-the-Sea with
its fne 17th and 18th century
homes lining a historic downtown
area flled with unique shops and
galleries. Travelers can stop for a
respite at Masconomo Park and
enjoy the view of Manchester
Harbor or lunch at any of a
number of great bistros and
restaurants and fnish off with
a homemade ice cream. Many
visitors like to park and walk to
famous Singing Beach – where
the sand literally “sings” and the
gradual sloping beach gives way
to beautiful vistas of the rocky
Cape Ann coastline.
From Singing Beach, return
to Route 127 and continue
northward, taking a brief detour
through the village of Magnolia
– famed for its Shore Road vistas
and historic summer homes.
Hesperus Avenue soon brings
one to Magnolia’s Hammond
Castle Museum, well worth a
visit. Hesperus Avenue rejoins
Route 127 near Ravenswood Park
which offers unspoiled woods to
walk in and a nature center that
caters to children. Route 127
(now Western Avenue) next brings
capeannvacations.com
the traveler to panoramic views
of Gloucester Harbor, seen from
historic Stage Fort Park. The route
continues along Gloucester’s
Stacy Boulevard overlooking
Gloucester’s eastern shore and
outer harbor. In summer, the
harbor is full of sailing craft
and fshing boats – and three
schooners that take passengers
sailing: the Thomas E. Lannon,
the Ardelle and the Adventure.
After stopping to see the sights
in Gloucester, continue along
Route 127A via beautiful Good
Harbor Beach and the eastern
shore of Gloucester and then on
to historic Rockport. Rockport
remains the quintessential artists’
retreat and coastal New England
village. It is a perennial favorite
and its penny candy general store,
art galleries, and boutiques along
historic Main Street, Dock Square
and Bearskin Neck give way to
exquisite in-town inns and B&Bs
and seaside lodging nestled along
the rocky shore.
From Rockport, this same route
leads visitors around the cape’s

northeastern-most point, passing
Halibut Point State Park, and
then turns back southward
through the laid-back village of
Lanesville and past idyllic Lobster
Cove at Annisquam. Halibut Point
is unique geographically and
offers nature trails, a seasonal
visitor center and sweeping ocean
vistas, all in all a perfect picnic
spot by the sea.
Exiting the island portion of Cape
Ann there is still much more to
see and do along the byway via
Route 133. Visitors can stop at
both Wingaersheek Beach and
the historic town of Essex, famous
for its shipbuilding and Essex
clams. 2014 marks the centenary
celebration of Woodman’s of
Essex, where the fried clam was
invented in 1914. Drop by the
Essex Shipbuilding Museum
and learn about this town’s rich
contribution to our nation’s
maritime heritage. Vessels built
and launched along the banks
of the Essex River populated the

1600s to the days of Kipling’s
Captains Courageous. The
shipbuilding tradition lives on to
the present day with three Essexbuilt schooners plying the tourist
trade out of Gloucester Harbor.
Cape Ann is not only a perfect
place to see by road, it also
offers an abundance of on-thewater tours and excursions.
Options include guided pontoon
boat and kayaking and standup paddleboard tours of the
pristine Essex River and its outer
bay that features Hog Island
(where Arthur Miller’s play “The
Crucible”, starring Winona Ryder
and Daniel Day-Lewis, was flmed
in 1996) and Crane Beach.
Whereas in Gloucester one can
sail the harbor and beyond on
Essex built schooners, in Essex
one can paddle or poke along a
tidal river and its estuaries among
marsh birds, seals and sails and
surrounded by unmatched natural
vistas. It is the best of all worlds.

Navigating Arts & Culture on Cape Ann:
There’s a Free New App for That
Whether it’s the coil
of a fsherman’s
knot, an author’s
storyline, an artist’s
brush stroke, the wheel of the
Fishermen’s Memorial or a scenic
drive, loops repeat through every
village and cove of Cape Ann.
Life is cyclical. Children grow up,
move away and long to return
home. Visitors come once and
yearn to visit again and again.
Successive generations of artists
– and art afcionados – make
pilgrimages and relocate to Cape
Ann. The roads and waterways
that connect our towns whorl and
bend. Alluring neighborhoods dot
our map and essential landmarks
fall within our combined
geography. Ever alluring, there is
enough to keep anyone occupied.
Anyone with even a passing
affection for arts and culture will
certainly want to take a good,
long look.
As of 2014, Cape Ann boasts four
dazzling new cultural districts
teeming with history, creativity
and talented artistic communities:
Gloucester’s two cultural districts,
the downtown Harbortown
Cultural District and the Rocky
Neck Cultural District; the
Rockport Cultural District and the
Essex River Cultural District. The
cultural districts are jam-packed
with museums, studios, galleries,
bookstores, antique shops,
venues (music, cinema, theater),
trails, restaurants, attractions
and festivals. Gloucester, Essex
and Rockport share nearly four
centuries of maritime history and

cultural attractions is about to
become much easier. The four
cultural districts have teamed
with the Cape Ann Chamber
of Commerce, seARTS and the
Massachusetts Cultural Council
to create a most convenient arts
and culture travel guide dedicated
to Cape Ann. Users can now
download the free Cape Ann
Cultural Districts mobile app
to their smartphones instantly,
anytime, anywhere to navigate
the best of Cape Ann creativity.
To supplement websites and
brochures, this app can be on
hand as easily as the phone
already in pocket. The user can
take it to help guide their way
wherever they go on Cape Ann.
The app will act as an insider
key for hundreds of arts and
cultural points of interest as
well as a gateway to Cape Ann.
There will be a selection of top
quality restaurants, unique shops,
attractions, services and lodging –
all with strong connections to our
local art communities. Peppered
with pushpins, the app’s maps
will let any user see the surprising
and humbling concentration of
arts, landmarks and things to do.
The app can also be a casual

Great Expectations ... Cape Ann Dining
You already know you can enjoy
the freshest seafood around when
dining on Cape Ann. But, what
dining experiences might surprise
and delight you?
In Rockport you can expect to
buy a freshly steamed whole
lobster at Roy Moore Lobster
Company. But, why not enjoy it
while sitting on the rocks at the
end of Bearskin Neck? The chefs
at Roy Moore’s make it easy
for you by cracking the lobster,
and throwing in melted butter
and lemon. Once settled on the
rocks, surrounded by the deep
blue waters of the Atlantic, you’ll
never want to leave. Well, you
might want to leave for dessert.
For a nearby treat, visit Helmut’s
Strudel, also on Bearskin Neck.
There you will fnd “addictive”
Austrian style apple and cherry
strudel, fresh baked muffns, and
cinnamon buns. Try your strudel
with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
for a real treat.
Just a few minutes away in
Gloucester, you’ll fnd culinary
adventure at every corner. Stop
by the Azorean Restaurant for
Portuguese style cuisine, a full
bar and a diverse menu. Ever try
octopus? Now’s your chance.
What about a dining adventure
on the water? Gloucester now
offers its frst dinner cruises
on the Beauport Princess. Just
launched in late 2013, you can
fnd out more information by
visiting www.cruiseportgloucester.
com.
Speaking of “frsts” on Cape Ann,
you know that Essex is the home
to America’s frst fried clam. But
where might you want to stop
before your clam dinner? How
about enjoying a before dinner
drink? Just across the street
from Woodman’s (celebrating
100 years in business in 2014)
is Shea’s Riverside Restaurant &
Bar, where you can sit on the deck
and watch the Essex River wind
towards the Atlantic. The peaceful
scene will relax your mind and
soul.
“My recipes for cooking octopus
mostly came from my mother,”
says Manuel Lapa, Executive Chef
at the Azorean. “I recommend
San Miguel octopus for frst
timers. We brush the octopus
with olive oil, grill it, and drizzle
with garlic spiced oil. It only
takes one bite to convince diners
that it’s a good thing to be
adventurous when dining out.”

Experience Cape Ann 2014-2015
What if you’re looking for a
guaranteed good dinner and a
livelier night, but nothing too
crazy? You might be surprised to
hear The Landing at 7 Central in
Manchester by-the-Sea not only
offers some of the best comfort
food around (Shepherd’s Pie,
Macaroni and Cheese, Braised
Spare Ribs) but also trivia nights,
acoustic music and karaoke – all
in the atmosphere of an old New
England inn.
Visit Cape Ann for the reasons
you always visit, the fresh
seafood, beautiful coastline,
family-friendly beaches and
authentic people. Just remember
to keep your minds and appetites
ready for the unexpected culinary
adventures of Cape Ann.

Whale Watching On Cape Ann: A Summertime Must!
Thousands of tourists vacation
on Cape Ann every summer. One
of the most popular activities
enjoyed by visitors to our
community is whale watching.
Visitors can taste the salty air
as they cruise out of beautiful
Gloucester Harbor past jetties,
lighthouses and even a historical
castle on the way to Stellwagen
Bank, home to many kinds of
wildlife, including the beloved
Humpback Whale.
Gloucester is located eight miles
from Stellwagen Bank, a National
Marine Sanctuary and even closer
is Jeffreys Ledge and Tillies Bank,
all prime whale feeding grounds.
Gloucester is the ideal place
to whale watch because of its
proximity to these fertile feeding
grounds. Gloucester’s whale
watch companies are the only
ones in New England who can
easily reach these feeding grounds
on any given trip.
The ledges and banks of these
feeding grounds create a rich
and productive marine habitat
that attracts numerous species
of whales. Whale watching
season on Cape Ann begins
when the whales return to Cape
Ann in early May, seeking our
rich offshore waters and ends
sometime in early November,
weather permitting.
Each of Gloucester’s whale watching
companies hosts an onboard
naturalist to help identify the whales
and describe their behaviors. All
are committed to education and
environmental awareness and all
guarantee whale sightings. Every
journey is unforgettable and aweinspiring, from the frst sighting of
a breaching whale to the voyage
home. A narrated tour of historic
Gloucester Harbor is included on
every trip.
58
Minke, Sei, Northern Right and
Finback whales are regularly seen
off Gloucester, but the beloved
Humpbacks are the whale
watchers’ favorites. Rolling, tail
slapping, breaching, even playing
with the whale watch boats
are everyday activities for these
majestic beauties. Mothers bring
their new calves to Cape Ann’s
feeding grounds to teach them to
hunt and feed. The Humpback
whales that return each year
are among the world’s most
thoroughly researched whale
populations. Naturalists have
been tracking them off Cape Ann
for years.
For bird lovers, these bird species are
often seen:
• Gulls & Terns
• Shearwaters and Petrels
• Jaegers and Skies
• Northern Fulmar
• Wayward Land Migrants
• Sea Turtles
Here are a few hints to help you
enjoy your trip:
Don’t pack anything larger than a
daypack. You won’t want to keep
track of a large bag while trying
to watch whales. Boats do have
heated cabins where you warm up
and can buy snacks, but you will
want to be out on the deck were
the whales are! Wear sensible
shoes or sneakers for good
traction on the decks. During
early April, May and June, ocean
temperatures are still very cold
and any breeze over the ocean
can make it uncomfortable if
you’re not dressed appropriately.
Even gloves are a good idea.
During July and August don’t
forget your sunglasses, sunblock
and a sweater or light jacket.
It can be 10-20 degrees cooler
offshore. It is also a good idea
to make advance reservations
during July and August. And most
importantly, don’t forget your
camera!

may be seen while whale watching include:

(extremely endangered)
• Long-fnned Pilot Whale
• Beluga (White Whale)
• Harbor Porpoise
• Atlantic White-sided Dolphin
• White-Beaked Dolphin
• Common Dolphin
• Bottlenose Dolphin
• Grampus (Rizzo’s Dolphin)
• Blue Sharks
