Thirteen Corning members then transferred the flag to the Binghamton H.O.G. chapter and dealership. As many as 150,000 riders nationwide are expected to participate in the 2011 Nation of Patriots tour that began Saturday, May 28th, at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson in Oconomowoc. One Man’s Vision: 100,000 Answer the Call “Riders will carry our nation’s flag city-to-city through all 48 continental states over the ensuing 100 days in an effort to honor America’s past, present and future Armed Forces and their families,” said Bill Sherer, founder and executive director of the Nation of Patriots. The idea for the larger Nation of Patriots tour came to Sherer while on the road. “I was all alone on my bike somewhere in New York State when I realized that my voice was not strong enough to reach coast to coast or all the way to our men and women overseas,” he said. “This is why I decided to undertake this effort. I wanted to include as many proud American voices as possible to stand with me in a unified and collective salute of appreciation to the U.S. military.” Arkport Harley delivering the flag to American Twin (Photo provided by Jim Crooker) Corning H.O.G. chapter 2077 donated $100 to the organization, which will be used to augment funds raised throughout the tour for distribution to the families of wounded veterans. Paul Koekebacker accepting the flag from Arkport’s HOG member Sherer was the lone rider and flag bearer on the 2009 Patriot Tour, traveling through all 33 states east of the Mississippi on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and, at his own expense, raising awareness and money for the families of wounded veterans. He ended the tour in Milwaukee and worked with the VA Hospital there to direct the money he had raised to military families. More than 100,000 riders across the U.S., many of them veterans, answered the Nation of Patriots’ call early in the spring of 2010 and volunteered to take part in the second annual Patriot Tour. Background: Founded in 2009 by Bill Sherer, the Nation of Patriots is an independent, non-partisan 501(C)3, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide financial support to the families of wounded men and women who have volunteered their lives in the preservation, protection and future of the United States and its citizens. More information, donor opportunities and a complete Nation of Patriots tour schedule can be found at www.nationofpatriots.org. It all began with a simple oil change. Four years ago I was getting my 2001 Low Rider serviced at Total Cycle in Henrietta when I noticed a couple of plaques and trophies displayed while I was waiting. They came from the Skin & Steel Bike Show where my personal bike service expert, Mike Papa, had shown his bikes every year for the last 4 years prior and won or placed 2nd in his classes. There is where I caught the bug. I looked at my Low Rider and said “I could show my bike too.” Then the transformation started. The first year in 2008 was the carb, an S & S Super E, and changed the wheels from spoke to custom polished aluminum billet wheels, polished her up believing I had a chance to place. I was in for a rude awakening. My first year entering, there were over 100 bikes entered in 9 separate classes. Mine was in the street stock class and I knew from the onset I had no chance, but was optimistic for the next year’s show. Don Benedict — Proud winner at 2010 Skin & Steel Bike Show In 2009 I did more to the bike — changed the handlebars, all the cables, a Mustang seat and added new pipes and other chrome accessories — thinking that was enough to place. It was entered again with increased hope, same as the previous year, 140 bikes in 9 classes and got skunked again. In 2010, with great determination to place in my class so additional items and upgrades were added to the bike — replaced the cylinders to bore it to 95 cubic inches, added racing pistons, push rods, a Daytona Twin Tec ignition system, new mirrors, grips, new headlight and matched my wheels with identical disc rotors and drive pulley and sent them all to Santa Ana to be chromed. I entered it again and said I’d better place this year. 120 bikes had entered. Everyone told me at the show I was sure enough to win without a problem. Then the street stock class was announced and the result was I placed 2nd . . . happy I placed but disappointed I didn’t win. This past winter, tons of engine work was done to it; all S & S engine components/parts: racing heads to get the engine to 10.5:1, 585 easy start self-releasing compression cams, racing oil pump, new air flow induction system, increased the ignition to red line @ 7000 RPM, dynos @ 130 HP @ 100 ft/ lbs of torque, chromed the rest of the bike parts that weren’t chromed and redid my paint with 6 coats of clearcoat paint. This past spring, I entered it again — same class, same number of bikes entered. After all was said and done, I finally placed 1st in the Street Stock class at the Skin & Steel show. Mission accomplished. The morale of the story is, “If you invest in accessories and upgrades and it winds up more than you bought the bike for, you are definitely a Harley rider/owner.” So all of you who have read this article now have an idea on how much was invested thus far, yes thus far, and may not be finished yet. The changes/upgrades keep on going. There is always more to do to it. If I am ambitious enough, I may keep going; however there are two more bikes to worry about — My wife Debi’s 883 Sportster and our Road King we take on long distance rides. All of the upgrades were done by Mike Papa of Total Cycle in Rochester, NY — the only S & S certified technician in NY State. So when you see me on the bike, don’t hesitate to ask about it and will be glad to show you all its features/upgrades. Ride Hard or Stay Home! ••• Don Benedict Road Captain, Corning HOG Chapter Newsletter/ Summer 2011 5 H.O.T. Time in Buffalo H.O.G.® Officer Training . . . April 8 - 9, 2011 The weekend of April 9th, H.O.G.® officers Paul and Yvette Simonson, Bruce Paulhamus and Tom Doud had the distinct pleasure to attend H.O.T. (Harley Owner’s Group Officer Training) in Buffalo, NY. We were insanely busy. We were entertained a lot, fed a lot, but more importantly we learned about the ins and outs of running a chapter . . . from working with team members to brainstorming new activities to promoting our chapter and its events to knowing what to do if something goes wrong. We also met a lot of like-minded people with varying levels of experience in their own H.O.G. chapters. We learned from their experiences and shared some tips and tricks of our own. To give you an overview of the training, the following was taken directly from the H.O.T. Toolkit (Handbook): Active Alliances is all about building and promoting your chapter – tips for keeping members involved, promoting your chapter and its events, writing interesting newsletters and maintaining your chapter’s Web site. Better Bonds looks at working with the people in your chapter. You’ll find out how to run meetings that keep members interested and involved; how to motivate, train, and retain volunteers; and how to work with people with different personalities and opinions that may conflict with your own. Cohesive Chapters gets down to the nitty-gritty of leading your chapter – what it means to actually lead a H.O.G. chapter, the roles and responsibilities of your dealer and H.O.G. Regional Manager and how to work effectively with them, and how to help new officers transition into leadership. Decisive Details focuses on the legal aspects of chapter management. You’ll learn the technical aspects of chapter finances and how all officers can support the Treasurer. You’ll also learn about potential risks you may encounter, including what risks are presented by having alcohol available, how to manage use of logos, and what to do if there’s an emergency situation. Extraordinary Events covers how to run events – how to come up with new, awesome ideas, the ins and outs of group rides and leading them, and what steps to take when actually planning events. Flexible and Focused addresses the special focus of H.O.T. – growing membership and working well in your particular officer position ••• 6 Newsletter / Summer 2011 More H.O.G.® Officer Training . . .
