This month’s large breakfast
ride was to Cartwright’s Maple
Tree Inn. Larry Helber, Mike and
Ginny, Mike Lewis, Paul Thayer,
and I attended. The pancakes
were plentiful, the syrup was
tasty, my eggs were scrambled,
and I was told that the sausage
was great.
After breakfast I felt like wandering a little. So I went
over to Arkport Cycles and drooled. Their new show
room is a beautiful facility filled with all kinds of goodies.
Yes, there is a large emphasis on Harley Davidson and
other cruiser type bikes. They did have two GL1800s
and one GL1800F6B all new, and there were two used
GL1800s as well.
The real reason I went to Arkport Cycles was the
display of antique bikes that they have. I really get a kick
out of looking at antique vehicles and equipment. It is
always good to look back at what was state of the art in
the past. Most of us would not be caught dead on some
of the early motorcycles; but we need to remember that
we would not have the machines we have today if not for
the machines of yesterday.

Each year the manufacturers up the ante of
technology available in motorcycles. Just looking back
at how far motorcycle technology has come in my
lifetime is pretty amazing. When I was a kid every bike
had drum brakes. Then they started to have disk on the
front and drum on the back. Today most bikes have disk
brakes all the way around. Engines have gotten more
dependable, longer lived, and less emissions all the
time. I still miss the blue cloud and sound of two-stroke
motors at times.
It was fun to look at the old bikes and think back to
the days of my youth. I enjoyed looking at the old
bikes, but I will stick with the one I have. Although now
that I think about it; my bike is getting a little old.
That’s ok though, I still love it and try not to leave it
locked in the garage any more than I have to. I hope to
have it out soon.

April Anniversaries
None on the list.
It is Saturday morning March 26, 2016 and this past week
saw another act of senseless violence perpetrated on the
citizens of this world. I have seen a lot on the news this week
about a useful motorcycling skill. This skill is situational
awareness.
What is situational awareness you ask? In a nutshell
situational awareness is being aware of what is around you and
what is happening around you at all times. Everyone who rides a
motorcycle practices situational awareness to one extent or another. Like most skills it takes practice to
preform proficiently and some days it seems to work better than others. Don’t worry too much about
every little detail; you cannot possibly keep track of everything. You do need to keep track of the major
details though.
Just because we have arrived at our destination does not necessarily mean that we are safe. Our
travels take us to different areas and events. In our travels we can meet people from all over the world
with many different ideologies and social norms. There are dangers all around us all the time; usually
trip and fall dangers, but sometimes there are more serious dangers.
It is not my desire to get people nervous or scared with this article. I just want people to think about
where they are and what is going on around them more often than not. I hope that none of the people
reading this are ever involved in an incident like the one in Brussels this week. I think that I have more
to worry about from my feet or my own actions than the actions of others. Hopefully the rest of you are
more coordinated than me.

Ramblings From Your Editor
Our ride to Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn was on a great sunny day. Unfortunately
it was too cold for bikes. We all 4 wheeled it. Here’s a picture of those, minus
one, who enjoyed the ride, good
company and great pancakes with
real maple syrup.
Our next big breakfast event, or
should I say brunch, is at Tillman’s
Village Inn, 14369 Ridge Rd, Albion,
meet there 11am, Sunday April 11.
If you missed the last one, be sure
and come this year. The food is
great. We are hoping for good
weather so we can ride.
Thank You
Paul and I would like to thank everyone for your support and kind words since we announced Paul’s
diagnosis. We also want to thank everyone who supported the ALS Association fund raiser in Paul’s
honor held at McDonalds recently. The funds raised will help those afflicted with ALS right here in our
local Rochester area. Thanks again for your support.

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month. Affecting an estimated one million Americans and four
to six million worldwide, Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative
disease after Alzheimer’s and is the 14th leading cause of death in the United States. There is
no cure for PD and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.
Research from the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) Parkinson’s Outcomes Project has
proven that 2.5 hours of exercise per week has a significant difference on the quality of life for
those with PD. Regular physical activity is linked to improved mobility and less cognitive
decline. For more information, visit www.parkinson.org
April is also National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Pledge to be an attentive driver
# Turn off your cell phone Put it in the glove compartment, in your purse or in your trunk. There
is no safe way to make a call while driving – not even hands-free.
# Send and read text messages and emails before you start driving.
# If you’re going on a longer drive, schedule breaks to stop, park safely, and respond to
messages.
# Using voice features in your car’s infotainment system is also distracting. Take care of
communications before you start driving.
# Know where you’re going before you put the car in “drive.” Put your destination into your
GPS so you do not need to fiddle with it while the car is moving.
# Social media can wait. No update, tweet or video is worth a life.
# Park in a safe area if you must take a call, return a text or check email.
# Do not call or text friends or family if you know they are driving.

An Easter Ride
By Larry Helber
I went for a ride on my motorcycle today. Nine months ago I spent a sleepless night suffering
excruciating pain in my right arm. I had helped a friend move and suspected I had strained
something. A doctor agreed and prescribed only rest and applying heat. One week later my
oncologist called informing me a routine scan uncovered that my cancer had appeared again; it
was gnawing at the bone in my right arm causing the terrible pain. Another whirlwind round of
treatments and a long hiatus from riding my beloved Gold Wing motorcycle ensued while I
recovered. This Easter weekend I had the opportunity to determine, would this be the end of
my riding career or a resurrection of my favorite hobby.
Friday night I received a phone call from my youngest son, a college student in Buffalo. He
decided tomorrow would be a good day to wake his motorcycle from its winter slumber in
Rochester and ride it back to Buffalo. He needed a little help performing some maintenance
before he rode it back. His friend's motorcycle was being stored in the same place and would
be traveling with him. They arrived a few hours later with an additional person to drive the car
back. After dropping luggage and making bedding arrangements, I went to sleep; they headed
for a garbage plate at the late night burger stand. I requested an early start the next morning.
For college age boys, 11:00 Saturday morning is an early start.
We assembled to begin our trek to reclaim the motorcycles. I stood, on the porch, admiring the
sunshine, and took inventory of what I may need to get the bikes ready to ride to my house. In
my garage, I had a nice compliment of tools and supplies to make preparing the motorcycles
for the season easier. An assortment of hand tools, tire inflator and jumper cables is what I
should bring with me. All of them neatly stored in the saddle bag of my Wing. All I needed was
my boots and a jacket. I saw the boys watch in envy as I wheeled my trusty steed out of the
garage and thumbed the starter. My heart skipped a beat as the slumbering motor roared back
alive. Leaning into the turn, I exited the driveway; it felt right. Just like riding a bike, you don't
forget.
We pulled the motorcycles out of storage and checked them over to make sure they would be
safe to travel the short distance back to my home. One bike needed a jump start, but further
testing later showed it just needed a charge and not a replacement battery. Back at my house
we rechecked everything and took an inventory of the requested repairs and any parts needed.
Standing in the sunshine armed with a complete shopping list the choice was easy, we donned
our riding gear and headed en mass across town to Hollink's for the needed supplies and a
peek at the latest new machines and accessories. My son also purchased a needed Gremlin
Bell for his riding friend. Returning to my garage, the boys went to work on their now awakened
rides checking off items on their maintenance list. I assisted where needed but mostly enjoyed
the two young minds busily enjoying their budding romance of men and two wheeled machines.
Building the skills required to allow them to keep them running and safe so they too can enjoy a
lifetime of riding as I have.

With the last item checked off the task list, we said our goodbyes and they wrapped themselves
in their protective gear for their trip home. Hugs and handshakes were exuberant. Crafted by
the experience of a magical day. I was proud of them as I stood in the shadows and watched.
They checked the weather and temperature conditions then held a driver meeting, the two
motorcyclists and the chase car coordinating signals and caravanning specifics. I reminded
them of the signs of hypothermia and instructed them to keep an eye on each other. They
mounted their freshly maintained vehicles and headed down the street. I stood there, watching,
wishing I was going with them, but I knew my job was complete. It is now time for them to
create their own adventures.
Sitting here in the quiet of my living room reliving the events of the day, occasionally my eyes
will tear, as the emotions and magic of this particular spring day on Easter weekend engulf me.
My riding career is winding down as some of the pains of last summer return from the stresses
of the day. Medicine and prayer will help extend my riding season, but I know my abilities are
reducing. My resurrection is in the enjoyment of observing those young riders commencing their
season of adventure on two wheels.
For those who have followed my exploits in these pages, I apologize for my absence. My
treatments over the past nine months have not been very kind. As has been said, "the cancer
is not the problem, it's the treatments that will kill you." First, one drug and now a second have
failed to manage my disease but present an array of side effects. Again as you read this, I will
be returning to the hospital for a series of tests and imaging to establish a baseline for my next,
yet to be determined, treatment. I felt good riding today. I was able to control my craft well.
Unfortunately, I felt the familiar discomforts creeping in. It was tolerable for the short distances
performed today. Still to be determined is how I will fair on longer rides or if the wonders of
medicine can help without causing ill effects that will prevent me from riding. I accept the
challenge of discovering my new limits. One thing I do know, the memories of days like today
are enough to keep me happy for a very long time.
