Prescott, MD As Chief Academic Officer, John E. Prescott, MD, oversees AAMC efforts designed to prepare and assist deans, faculty leaders, and future physicians for the challenges of 21st century academic medicine. He leads a staff that addresses critical medical school data; administrative and operational issues; explores new models of successful mission alignment; focuses on key faculty issues and leadership development; and supports medical school accreditation activities. Dr. Prescott also leads activities supporting the Council of Deans, the Organization of Student Representatives, the Group on Student Affairs, the Group on Faculty Affairs, the Group on Business Affairs, the Group on Institutional Planning, and the Liaison Council on Medical Education. Prior to joining the AAMC in 2008, Dr. Prescott served as dean of the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine for four years. He also has served as president and CEO of University Health Associates, WVU integrated multi-specialty faculty practice plan; founding chair of WVU Department of Emergency Medicine, and as the first director of the WVU Center for Rural Emergency Medicine. Before WVU, he was a military physician in the Army for eight years. Dr. Prescott earned his medical and his bachelor’s degrees from Georgetown University. Lt. Colonel Lee Burnett, DO Lee Burnett, DO, is a board-certified family medicine physician currently serving with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. He is founder and volunteer director of the Student Doctor Network http://studentdoctor.net/. A California native, he graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1993 and graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in 1997. After a one-year osteopathic internship at Downey Regional Medical Center, he went on to complete his family medicine residency at the University of California, Irvine in 2000. During his time in medical school, he founded the Student Doctor Network website. He joined the Army Reserve in 1997 during his internship. Following graduation from residency, he served for one year as Director of Medical Education at Downey Regional Medical Center and joined as a partner at Oso Family Medical Group in Orange County, CA. He was activated with the Army Reserve in 2003, 2005, and 2008. In 2009, he chose to sell his practice and go full time with the Army Reserve in 2009 and transitioned to the regular Army in 2011. He deployed with 82nd Airborne Division in 2012, where he served as Brigade Surgeon in the two most violent districts of Afghanistan. He is married and has two children. In July, he and his family are moving to Kansas for a 10-month training course in Army operations and management. Speakers and Panelists Geoff Aumaugher (OPM screen name: DoctorGeo2008) Geoff Aumaugher has been an active member of OPM since 2002. He has held various positions from Treasurer to Chairman of the Board and currently serves on the Executive Advisory Council. Geoff's desire to become a doctor was reinvigorated while researching his daughter’s diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. During his research, he found OPM and was convinced to attend the 2002 Convention in Dallas by "OldManDave,” one of the founding members of the group. Since then he has been working to complete his degree and medical school pre-requisites, raising two daughters as a single father, volunteering in the community, and working a 50+ hour per week job. He is currently in the process of applying for the 2014 entering class and hopes to become another success story of the OldPreMeds family. Charles E. Campbell Charles Campbell has been Director of Admissions for the Georgetown University School of Medicine since October of 2012. He has been associated with Georgetown for more than 4 years serving previously as the Interim Director of Admissions as well as Assistant Registrar for Student and Faculty Services. Before entering the academic setting, Mr. Campbell worked for several years at the First National Bank of Arizona where he was a manager for Broker Development Training. He also worked as a consultant for Vocus, Inc, where he specialized in brand development, web site traffic growth, business planning, and sales strategy development. Mr. Campbell earned his undergraduate degree in 1999 at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey. Judy Colwell, MA (OPM screen name: Judy Colwell) Ms. Judy Colwell counsels nontraditional applicants who are interested in what it takes to become well-qualified candidates for medical school. Formerly Assistant Director of Medical School Admissions at Stanford University (1990-1999) and an ongoing part-time premed advisor there, she knows and understands the questions and uncertainties that premedical students face. With twenty years of undergraduate advising experience and ten years of medical school admissions experience, she has a unique knowledge of the admissions process from the "inside.” Ms. Colwell has now spent more than ten years creatively and efficiently blending her experiences to help applicants be successful. Ms. Colwell has also been a constant contributor to the OldPreMeds forums and is one of our regular conference speakers. She always donates consultations for the annual conference raffle and offers sound advice and support on a continual basis, online and in person. Look for her eyes to be "dancing" at the conference, as she presents a perennial favorite conference topic on what medical school admissions committees look for in applicants. This will be the 12th OldPreMeds Conference that Judy has participated in. Ensign Michael ‘Mitch’ Eliason, MS-III, MEM After graduating from the US Naval Academy in 2003 with a degree in mechanical engineering, Mitch Eliason went through Nuclear Power training commands. He eventually served as an officer aboard the submarine USS LOS ANGELES (SSN 688) out of Pearl Harbor, HI, for three years, making two Western Pacific Deployments and earning junior officer of the year award in 2007. He then went on to serve on the faculty of the US Naval Academy in the Leadership, Ethics, and Law Department. He also completed a master’s degree in engineering management from Old Dominion University. During his two-and-a-half years on faculty at USNA, he fulfilled the prerequisites requirements (20+ credits) necessary for application and matriculation into medical school. Resigning his commission as a Lieutenant (O-3) Line Officer, Mitch was recommissioned as an Ensign (O-1) in the Medical Corps on the day he started Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in August 2010. Since then Mitch has served as Class President and Battalion Commander in addition to his academic obligations. He also has several publications and is active in research and organizational committees at USUHS. During his career, he has earned two Navy Commendation Medals and four Navy Achievement Medals for Individual Merit. He is presently finishing his third year of medical school. Mitch is married to Jenny Eliason, who is currently a stay-at-home mom, and they are blessed with three children, ages 4, 2 and 1. Captain Ryan L. Gray, MD (OPM screen name: Doc Gray) Dr. Ryan Gray, or “Doc Gray” as he is known in the flight medicine clinic, is the Chief of Aerospace Medicine at Hanscom Air Force Base, MA. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, until age 13 when his family moved to Tampa, FL. Quickly realizing he wanted to be a Florida Gator and become a physician, Ryan graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Exercise Physiology. Somewhat a nontraditional student himself, he took three years off and was a fitness program manager for Boston Sports Clubs. He completed his medical training at New York Medical College and received the Health Professions Scholarship Program award from the United States Air Force. As a Flight Surgeon, Ryan is often approached by young airmen in the Air Force for advice on how to become a physician, and as a result, in the spring of 2012, Ryan realized that he wanted to help premedical students more widely and began brainstorming with his wife, who is also a physician. Together they created MedicalSchoolHQ.net, a website devoted to providing advice to premedical and medical students on their journey to becoming physicians. In November 2012, he launched a podcast specifically for that audience, with weekly interviews featuring experts ranging from deans of medical schools, admissions committee members, and current premedical and medical students, all to give the listeners the information they need. To fulfill his love of flying and everything about airplanes, Ryan received his private pilot certificate in 2012. His other hobbies include photography and religiously following Florida Gator football. Katherine Hedian, OMS-III (OPM screen name: Kate429) Katherine Adelicia Hedian , RN, CNM, BSN, MSN, graduated from University of Maryland with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. She worked 13 years as an ICU/Cardiac Surgery nurse and preceptor, while raising three children and becoming a certified childbirth educator. She then switched career paths to attend the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing (FSMFN) in Kentucky and Case Western Reserve University, obtaining her Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery and a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN). She was a National Health Service Corps Scholar and then practiced for two-and-a-half years in rural Tennessee as a CNM. Returning to Richmond, she spent 10 years working in hospitals, health departments, free clinics, and teaching nursing before returning to school. She is currently a third-year medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. David Kelley, DO (OPM screen name: OldManDave) Dr. David W. Kelley is a founding member of OldPreMeds and served as Chairman of the Board for the initial 10 years of the organization. He started OldPreMeds in 1997 as an email listserv with only 6 people; it has now grown to over 9000 members. After struggling during his initial attempt at college, where he majored in party and minored in fraternity, he dropped out of school to grow up and find a direction in life. Dave paid his way through respiratory school as a bouncer and bartender and spent much of the next decade working with critically ill children. When Dave expressed interest in becoming a physician to a physician he worked with, he was told, and you don't have an ice cube's chance in hell. However, the most assured way to get something done is to tell him it cannot be done. He worked his ample butt off, earning a degree in neuroscience with magna cum laude honors from the University of Texas at Dallas. He was then accepted by the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (now AT Still University) and was awarded his DO degree in 2003. Dr. Kelley went on to do his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Critical Care at Dartmouth University. After completing his training in 2008, he became a staff physician Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital where he was appointed medical director of Intensive Care and Respiratory Care, and led multidisciplinary teams that constructed both sections from scratch. Dr. Kelley currently balances clinical practice with medical/IT/EMR consulting. He provides anesthesia services in central Illinois, critical care coverage in Santa Fe, NM and Gulfport, MS, and assists in EMR adoption support, systems design/integration for ORs and ICUs wherever those opportunities manifest. He is the principal in two private medical companies, SOVA Anesthesiology Consulting, LLC and DWKelley Associates, LLC. Gabriel Lerman, DO, MS (OPM screen name: Gabelerman) Dr. Gabe Lerman , a member of OPM since 2003, is an internal medicine resident at the Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, PA. He reached the goal of becoming a physician in 2011 when he was awarded his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduating from Rutgers University in 1997 with a degree in Biotechnology, Gabriel conducted genetic research in the pharmaceutical industry before moving to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. During his tenure at MSKCC, Gabriel conducted genetic research on Colorectal Cancer, Non-BRCA1/BRCA2 Breast Cancer, and into the efficacy of radiation and chemotherapy in Prostate Cancer. While at MSKCC, Gabriel attended graduate school at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ, where he obtained his Master’s of Science degree in Biology. Janette Martin, M.Ed. In the summer of 2006, Janette Martin moved to Harrogate, TN, becoming a key member of the team at Lincoln Memorial University that founded the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has worked at LMU-DCOM since its inception and now is its Director of Admissions. Prior to her career at DCOM, she worked in social services for over 30 years in Wichita, KS, first managing a reintegration facility for juvenile offenders for 15 years followed by 15 years working with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Janette received her undergraduate degree in Human Resource Management from Friends University in Wichita and her master’s in education with a counseling concentration from LMU in December 2010. She has been a volunteer in many areas: a conservator through the Kansas Guardianship Program; volunteering with the Teen Heartline, a suicide prevention service for young people; and countless hours of volunteer service with the Special Olympics. Diane McQuail, MS Diane McQuail has been involved with admissions at George Washington University School of Medicine (GWU-SOM) throughout her professional life. She earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master’s concentrating in psychology and women's studies from GWU as well. During her career, she has had a strong interest in both women and nontraditional students in medicine. She is a member of the Consortium of Medical Schools and Women's Colleges. One of Diane's proudest achievements is the instrumental role she played at GUW-SOM in initiating linkages with post-baccalaureate programs over 20 years ago. As the advisor for SALUD, she supports students in offering medical Spanish and outreach to the Hispanic community. Major Michael B. Moore, DO (OPM screen name: Mike Moore) Major Michael Moore has just graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathy from the Pacific Northwest University of Health Science at the age of 50. Featured in the 2011 CNN blog article “Never too late to be a doctor,” he optimizes what a highly motivated nontraditional student can achieve. Even as a busy older medical student, he has embraced new technology in social media and blogs. He has a following of nearly 10,000 on twitter and was student blogger last year with the prestigious British medical journal “The Lancet.” Mike’s work has been reposted on such sites as Medgadget, TEDMED, KevinMD and WingofZock. Mike has become a physician after many years of service in the US Army as an Airborne Infantryman, Aviator, and Physician Assistant and will continue to serve at the Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he will do his residency in Family Medicine. He is a decorated combat veteran both as a Cavalry soldier during Operation Desert Storm and as a medical officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Major Moore’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Army Aviator Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab. He was born in Jacksonville, FL, but as a "military brat" and solider, has lived in many places in the United States and around the world. Major Moore has also received Bachelor of Science degrees from Troy University and Alderson-Broaddus College as well as a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (Emergency Medicine) degree from the University of Nebraska. He will be the first physician in his family. Mike is married to a physician and they live with their two children in the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington State. His interests include the outdoors, reading, running, writing, and community service. He served on the board of Operation Ward 57; an organization devoted the care of wounded service members. He is a "Marathon Maniac" (#2283) and one of three men in the Pacific Northwest region to receive the Gold Phidippides Award from USA Track & Field in 2010 for "Outstanding Performance and Endurance in Long Distance Running." Todd, Nelson, MD Dr. Nelson originally pursued dual degrees in electrical engineering and physiology, and graduated from University of Connecticut. In an effort to blend the two fields, he pursued graduate coursework, also at the University of Connecticut, and earned a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering. After graduating, he worked in industry for two years with Hamilton-Sundstrand Space Systems, a division of United Technologies. He then returned to academics and earned his medical doctorate at St. George's University. After graduation, he entered residency training at Waukesha Family Medicine Residency Program and, this fall, will be starting a full time outpatient family medicine position. In his spare time, he enjoys photography, hiking, swimming, boating, and biking, especially with his wife and two children. Mary R. Renard, MD (OPM screen name: Mary Renard) Mary Renard grew up in Northern Virginia and earned her BSN from Georgetown University in 1978. Prior to med school, she worked as an obstetrics nurse, childbirth educator, and nonprofit administrator while raising her three children. In 1997, Mary returned to school to complete her medical school prerequisites at George Mason University in a DIY (do-it-yourself) post-bacc. She went on to earn her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences graduating in 2004 at the age of 48. Mary chose family medicine because she enjoyed every single one of her core rotations during third year of med school and went to complete her residency at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)/Fairfax Family Practice where she served as Academic Chief Resident. Mary likes to say after years of study and debt, being “a real honest to God attending physician is priceless!” As board-certified physician practicing family medicine in Ashburn, VA, her typical day in will incorporate a little office surgery, some pediatrics, a fair amount of psychiatry, lots of internal medicine, and some OB/GYN. When she is not working, she is sharing pictures of her grandchildren on Facebook. Carrie Oldham Robey (OPM screen name: CarrieLiz) Carrie Oldham Robey is a wife and mother from Nashville, TN, who attended Drake University on a full academic scholarship, graduating with honors in 1998 with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She works in a typical middle management corporate job for a large hospital chain, and tours as a singer/songwriter "on the side!" While her corporate job pays the bills, she has no passion for it. In her position, Carrie interacts daily with physicians, practice managers, and hospitals (from the business side), and after wishing she was on the other side of that proverbial fence for almost nine years, her husband finally convinced her to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a physician. She began her post-bacc work back in January of 2010, and she found her company to be supportive—allowing her to flex her schedule for classes, paying her tuition, and even expressing an interest in hiring her back if she makes it through this "crazy scheme!" Suddenly finding herself void of any remaining excuses, Carrie launched her family into this seemingly ridiculous journey. Her biggest concern was the impact her "dream chasing" would have on her husband, Mark, and their two daughters. The family decided to take things one semester at a time. But with her husband firmly in her corner, her extended family close by for support, and her company as her biggest cheerleader, Carrie now finds herself on the verge of beginning medical school this fall. As if the ride wasn't crazy enough already (working full time, going to school, applying, and interviewing, etc.), Mark and Carrie found out in June 2012 (just as her application was being submitted) that they were expecting their third beautiful daughter. Affectionately referred to as "Surprise Robey,” she was born in February of this year! Mark works as a contract pilot for the Army, and his schedule has him in Afghanistan 90 days at a time, so the family is coming up with some unique logistical solutions to make it all work this year. They haven't come this far to stop now! Their motto has and will continue to be, "We are in this together, and we never give up!" Liza Thompson, M.Ed. (OPM screen name: lizat) Liza Thompson has spent the last 20 years advising nontraditional students through their premedical coursework and the medical school application process. As the former director of the Johns Hopkins and Goucher Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Programs, Ms. Thompson has a unique understanding of the issues specific to older students and the challenges they face when switching from a previous career to pursue medicine. She has a special interest in "at-risk" students and has a master's degree in education with a focus on this population. Ms. Thompson advises prospective medical students through undergraduate premedical education decisions, the post-baccalaureate program admission process, and the medical school admissions maze at www.thompsonadvising.com . Paul White, JD Paul White has been affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University since 1994, first as Director of Undergraduate Admissions and then as the Assistant Dean for Admissions at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Mr. White also served as director of the Financial Aid Office from February 2002 until June 2006.
