MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Welcoming Ceremony Throw out Items
As we celebrate our 79th, we are welcoming our 2016 Champions with a parade. The champs will gather
at Canal Park at 11:30 a.m. At noon all the champs, along with other parade units, will march from
Canal Park to Lock 3 in downtown Akron. Once in Lock 3, each champ will be introduced. The champions are then escorted across the stage one at a time and introduced. While the announcer is speaking,
the champions throw trinkets to the crowd. Items such as Frisbees, t-shirts and water bottles have been
used in the past. We ask that you DO NOT have them throw their badges, pencils or any other items that
could be harmful. Also, please do not bring gum or candy. Each champion should plan on supplying his
or her own bag of trinkets to be tossed during this ceremony.
Badge Trading
On Monday, July 11 the champions have the opportunity to attend a “Badge Trading” session where they
exchange badges and trinkets from their hometowns. We suggest bringing approximately 300-600
badges for trading. Families will ask the champions for their badge all week long. We want to make sure
that you are aware of this tradition so that your champions can take part in this event.
Champ Driver’s License
Champs driver’s license available for purchase daily at the Information Tent. The cost is $5. For Champs staying
at a Partner Hotel the license is FREE and can be redeemed at the office tent during office hours throughout
the week.
Champ Car Messages
Want to write and give a message for a Champ wishing him/her “good luck” in Saturday’s race?
If so, then blank message cards can be picked up, filled out, and given to the volunteers at either the
white or blue building entrance. These messages will then be placed in the Champs’ cars for them to
read on Saturday morning before the race. All messages are due by Friday at 5 p.m.
