Picture-Book Bohemia: A Children’s-Book Walking Tour of Greenwich Village
Led by historian and critic Leonard Marcus (www.leonardmarcus.com)
Greenwich Village—fabled mecca for cool cat poets, musicians, and artists--was also a
vibrant creative crossroads for children’s literature’s greats. On this walking tour, we’ll see
the place where Where the Wild Things Are, Make Way for Ducklings, and The Very Hungry
Caterpillar were each created; visit the park that H.A. Rey sketched from his living room
window; stop at the school where Goodnight Moon author Margaret Wise Brown learned to
write and at the improbable Wonderland cottage that inspired her classic Little Golden
Book Mister Dog; and inspect the architectural “ghost” where modern American children’s
book publishing began. Pre-registration of $20.00.

Literature in Stone and Bronze: Central Park in New York City
Meeting point: Entrance at West 81st Street (Hunters’ Gates)
Duration: 2 hours
Tour Guide: Olga Bukhina, translator, writer, critic, and children’s literature specialist
New York Central Park is an enormous artistic, cultural, and nature masterpiece
created by the geniuses of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Literature, and
especially children’s literature plays an important role here, because so many of the
Park’s visitors are children. We will start at the Shakespearean Theater with its statues
representing The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet; we will walk through the
Shakespearean Garden; we will stroll through the enchanted Rumbles which
lampposts always remind me of the Narnia stories; we will pass by the Lake and the
Angel of Bethesda of the Bible and of Angels in America; and will spend time by the
Conservatory Water Pond where Stuart Little took part in a sailboat competition. We
will see Alice in Wonderland and her friends, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter,
and will sit on the Park bench next to the famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen
and his Ugly Duckling. So many New York children come here every Sunday to hear
a new story. We will say goodbye to the Park at the Mother Goose statue at 72nd
Street and Fifth Avenue on the Museum Mile, the home of the Metropolitan
Museum, the Frick Collection, and the Guggenheim Museum.
This is a free event. Register at executive.director@usbby.org
