A very warm welcome to the RB Hull Marathon 2015. We hope you will find in this guide all the information you need to arrive fit and prepared at the start line. RB are proud to sponsor the Hull Marathon Be a Game Changer with us today Our aim in putting this event together is primarily to provide a great experience for runners, both as a stern physical challenge (who said that running a marathon was easy?) but also as a well organised sporting event. Equally, we hope that residents of Hull, Hessle and Barton will find their own satisfaction from having a major sporting event come past their front door and will come out to watch and get into the spirit of things. We also hope that the event will be another chance to showcase Hull and the East Riding in advance of Hull becoming the UK’s City of Culture in 2017. The area has got so much going for it, there’s so much to see and do that we would urge anyone coming from afar to make a weekend of it. This event simply wouldn’t have been possible without the willing support of huge numbers of people. These include our hundreds of enthusiastic Marathon Maker volunteers, the local running clubs who have given us their valuable advice, the many organisations who have pledged their time, money and resources and, not least, the incredible team of individuals who are actually making the event happen. We have a motorway corridor on our doorstep and a range of public transport options. BY CYCLE There is plenty of covered cycle parking in the Hull College forecourt. View the Hull Cycle Route map on www.hullcc.gov.uk. BY BUS Hull is well connected by bus from across the UK. For more local services see East Yorkshire Motor Services (www.eyms.co.uk) or Stagecoach (www.stagecoachbus.com). The main bus station (Paragon Interchange) is a 10 minute walk to the Event HQ (see www.walkit.com for exact route finding). BY TRAIN Hull is easily accessible by rail from across the north of England. Please take time to read this event brochure as it contains all the information you need to take part in the race. Your race number goes on the front of your running top. Please pin it to ensure that it is clearly visible and that you have completed the medical information requested on the reverse. This could save your life. Your timing chip should match your number. The timing chip goes on your shoe in the following way. Help Desk Should you require any assistance on the day please go to our HQ Help Desk (1a) in the main Hull College building. Toilets Toilets (3) will be available both in the main Hull College building and outside in Queens Garden throughout the day. Make sure you avoid the pre-race rush by going well beforehand and not drinking excessively in the lead up to the race. There will also be sufficient toilets on the route at selected drinks stations (see p23). As we will be running in a residential area, please resist the temptation to relieve yourself behind a building or next to a wall. Neither will endear us to the residents of Hull and East Yorkshire! Changing Room There will be male (5) and female (6) changing areas in Hull College. There will be no access to showers on site. All bags should then be taken to the baggage area (7) in Queens Gardens. Refreshments Refreshments (2) will be available throughout the day in Queens Gardens and in Hull College. For family and friends there are also numerous catering facilities throughout the city centre (see back page). Baggage You can deposit your baggage for free at our facilities in Queens Gardens (7). You will find a slip for this on your race number. Carefully remove the perforated slip, attach it securely to your bag and hand it in. You can then retrieve your baggage after the race. We advise against leaving any valuable or breakable items in your luggage as we can’t accept responsibility for any loss or damages resulting from their storage. Any baggage not reclaimed will be disposed of after 2 weeks. Step 1 & 2: Take the strap and thread it through a single lace with the logo and race number facing outwards. Step 3: Peel the 3M sticker off and stick the 2 tabs together using the blue square as a guide, ensuring that you have created a loop. Step 4: Rotate the strap so your race number is visible from the front and the Blue Square part of the timing chip is against your trainer. You can tighten your laces to ensure the tag does not rotate around. Failure to attach your timing chip correctly could affect your results. TOP TIP Make sure you have everything you need ready on the night before you race. This will make for a more comfortable race day experience. So, remember to pin your number on, attach your timing chip, pack your race bag with everything you might need, know where you’re going and what time, know where you can park, prepare your race belt and supplements, know the layout of the Event HQ, know what time the race begins and what time you need to be in position. 8 The RB Hull Marathon 2015 Massage There will be a pre and post race massage service (8) for runners. This is provided courtesy of Warners and the University of Hull, both of whom would welcome a charitable donation for their efforts. Warm Up & Start There will be a pre race warm up activity in Queens Gardens at 8.20. Runners will be invited to the assembly area from 8.35 based upon their estimated finish time (faster runners first). Please be realistic about your finishing time as this will help ensure everyone gets a decent start. Please study the Event HQ plan (p6) and decide how you will get to the start area. By 8.45 all runners should be in the assembly area on Wilberforce Drive. The race will start at 9.00. MP3/Personal Audio The use of personal audio devices is not allowed during the race. We would like to minimize any risks associated with runners not being able to hear warning noises from the urban environment e.g. emergency vehicles on the route, as well as instructions from marshals. In addition, we think this also encourages fuller awareness of fellow runners and their welfare. For these reasons, anyone with such a device will be politely asked to remove it. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in this request which we think will make the event a safer one for all involved. www.thehullmarathon.co.uk 9 RACE DAY - RUNNER INFO (RACE) RACE DAY - RUNNER INFO (RACE) Pacers There will be pace runners for the target times of 3 hours and every 30 minutes up to 5 hours. They will be clearly marked. Mile Markers There will be prominent mile markers during the race. Each mile has been designed individually and supported by a local organisation. Which was your favourite mile? Timing Your run time will be timed electronically at the start and finish points. There will also be a timing clock at half way (13.1 miles). Closed Roads To ensure runner safety, the whole race will be run on roads closed to traffic except for the south bound crossing of the Humber Bridge when we will be running in the inside lane of the carriageway. Vehicles will be separated from the runners with doubled cones and rope, and will be restricted to 30mph, but runners are urged to be especially careful at this point in the course. Please also be mindful of emergency vehicles potentially accessing Hull Royal Infirmary (around mile 7.5) on the route. Drinks Stations There will be drinks stations every 3 miles up to mile 20 and then every 2 miles. There will be toilets at all drinks stations except mile 16 (Barton) and mile 20. More details of each station are on page 23. Medical Our medical providers, North East Medical Services, will be located throughout the route. If you are not feeling well or have any medical concerns please speak to one of our marshals on the course who will make contact with our medical team. If you see someone else in need of medical attention on the route, please contact a marshal. Please make sure you are fit enough to complete a marathon. See a doctor if unsure. Cut Off Time The RB Hull Marathon is a challenging competitive running event which demands a level of commitment in training as well as performance on the day. As organisers we also need to take into account the interests of residents and cannot keep roads closed indefinitely. As a result we will be working with a 6 hour cut off time (this is standard to similar marathons) which is the equivalent of just under 14 minutes per mile. If you do not reach the following points at the following times you will be given 2 options. Option 1: Continue as a Responsible Pedestrian: You can continue and complete the race on the understanding that you have no special rights and the roads will be reopening and the marshals/drinks stations will be standing down. You continue at your own risk and on the understanding that you may run an alternative route due to some parts of the course being closed to public access. The Event HQ will remain open until you retrieve your kit and you can also pick up your event mementos. Your time will not be displayed in the final event results. Option 2: Get a Lift in the Sweep Bus: You will be given the option to have a lift back to the Event HQ in our sweep minibus. Marshals and other volunteers will be giving up their time to make your race special so please be polite, patient and friendly with them. Photography A team of professional photographers (Sussex Sport Photography) will be taking photos throughout the race. These can be seen and purchased 24 hours after the race via www.sussexsportphotography.com. One of our Main Sponsors Eon Visual Media will be putting together a video of the day as well. Please be aware that they will be using an unmanned craft (courtesy of Octovision) to get some stunning aerial shots of the race. Finish Markers will be placed at the following distances from the finishing line: 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m. After you have crossed the line you will receive your event medal, t-shirt, goody bag and a bottle of water and then directed down into the Recovery Zone. Please do not delay longer than necessary in the finish straight as other runners will be finishing. Nuffield Health Recovery Zone In the Nuffield Health Recovery Zone you can get some light refreshments (fruit, cereal bars, squash). There will also be a massage area and access to medical services. Leaving the Recovery Zone, runners can then pick up their baggage and enjoy everything else going on in the Event Village. Medal Engraving If you would like to have an immediate record of your achievement, then why not have your medal engraved with your finishing time and the event date? Pop over to (15) and Hull based MWJ Trophies will give you a lasting momento of your achievement. (Price: £2.50). Awards and Prizes The main awards ceremony will take place at 12.30 at the Event HQ. A second prize giving will take place an hour later at 13.30. Name: Matthew Hayes Club: East Hull Harriers Marathon PB: 2.40 Local lad Matt Hayes from East Hull Harriers is looking forward to plenty of local and vocal support as well as “running around my home city on closed roads rather than dodging pedestrians and traffic on my training runs around Hull!” Results Results will be available online at www.sportstimingsolutions.co.uk shortly after the conclusion of the race. Those runners who have signed up for it will also receive their results by SMS text message. FAQs Can I transfer my entry? Transfers of entries in case of injury can be done free of charge via the Sports Entry Solutions website up until Sunday 30th August. Use the log in details given to you upon registration and then select the ‘Edit your Details’ option. Please contact us if you do not have your log in details. Name: Alison Kerr Club: Victoria Park City of Glasgow Marathon PB: 3.02 Alison aims to nip under the 3 hour mark for the first time at Hull. Living in Glasgow, why did Alison pick Hull? “I wanted an autumn marathon and don’t like running the same races as there are so many all over UK. I saw Hull was a new race and thought it would be great to be one of the first to give it a go.” Name: Richard Spooner Club: Barnsley Harriers Marathon PB: 2.44 Now living in Barnsley, Richard is returning home to Hull for his next marathon. Richard is most looking forward to “passing some of the iconic landmarks of my old stomping ground, particularly crossing the Humber Bridge as I’ve never run over it.” What do I do if I transfer my entry after I receive my race pack? You will need to pass on the event number and chip to the new runner. Please DO NOT give your number to someone else without undergoing the transfer process. Can I have a refund? Like most major events we operate a no refunds policy. We are not currently running any deferral system. Can I change my individual marathon entry to a relay team entry? Yes, providing there are still places in the relay competition. You will need to i) add the extra runners and the team name into the system using your log in details ii) notify the event organiser iii) send a cheque for the difference between individual entry and relay team entry to the event organiser. A small charge will be made to cover the additional postage of the team numbers. What shall I do if I’m concerned about my health? Running a marathon is not something to be taken lightly. Make sure that you’ve done sufficient training and are confident you can safely complete 26.2 miles. If in doubt, see you doctor. It’s not heroic trying to take on a marathon if you’re unprepared, it’s foolhardy. The majority of the race takes place within a varied urban enviroment which includes parks and long straights. The sectors crossing the 64 A1 Humber Bridge and into North Lincolnshire will provide scenes of great natural beauty. The elevation profile is overwhelmingly flat with a maximum variation of around 5 metres, making the course ideal for a fast time. This will contain 4 identical race numbers, 4 identical timing chips, copies of the event brochure and specific relay instructions, and a small bracelet. It is the responsibility of the team captain to distribute these to members of their team. Please look after them. Arrival At Start Responsibility for arriving at your relay start location is each team member’s responsibility. We advise each member to be at their start location at least an hour before they are due to run. See below for free shuttle bus service. Runner 1 relay start point: Wilberforce Driver (Event HQ) Runner 2 relay start point: Alfred Gelder Street Runner 3 relay start point: Humber Bridge Runner 4 relay start point: Sirius Academy Does Runner 1 have a separate start to the main marathon runners? No, Runner 1 starts off at the same time as the main field. We hope this adds to a greater sense of occasion for all relay runners being part of the main race. Does it matter which order we do it in? No, you can do it in any order, though only your team name will feature in the final results. The split times will be shown but only as Runner 1, Runner 2 etc. not as individual names. The split times will be calculated using a manual timing app. Only the start and finish times will be chip timed. Runners must only run one leg. What happens if we forget to hand on the bracelet? Don’t worry, it’s not a disaster. The bracelet is not a timing device, just a physical way to let the marshals know that one team member has finished before the other one starts. What happens if a runner gets injured and can’t complete their leg? The injured runner must inform a marshal who will then arrange for their message to get to the next relay changeover point so that the outgoing runner can then depart. Baggage Baggage storage will only be available at the main baggage area (7) in Queens Gardens. Any clothing left at relay stations will be donated to charity. We recommend that no new or important clothing or valuables are taken to the relay changeover points as we can’t be held responsible for any losses occurring. Who are the wondeful helpers at each Relay Changeover (RC)? At RC1 in Alfred Gelder St we have staff from nearby Scotts Property. At RC2 on the Humber Bridge we will have members of Yorkshire Wolds Runners whilst looking after RC3 will be runners from City of Hull AC. Changeover Process The changeover points will be signposted in advance but please check the maps beforehand to be aware of where these points are. These will be to one side of the main marathon race. • Incoming runners will be directed into the relay changeover points by marshals. • Split times of finishing runners will be recorded on our STS Pro Score Timing System. • Incoming runners then hand over the bracelet to the outgoing runner who puts this on and sets off. • Incoming runners will then receive their event mementos (t-shirt and medal) and post run refreshments and receive information about the depature time of the next shuttle bus to return them to the city centre or their starting point. We will attempt to advise outgoing runners of when the numbered incoming runner is coming but outgoing runners should also try and estimate a time window when the incoming runner will arrive and be more vigilant during this period. Shuttle Buses We will be operating a looped shuttle bus service (courtesy of Arrow Self Drive and Ellie Rose Travel) to take runners to and from the city centre. The service will start at 8.15 and finish at 14.00 and will depart from the bus stop on the east bound section of Castle Street (between Fish Street and Vicar Lane) every 15 mins. This will provide transport for the following runners: Runner 2: Transport from Humber Bridge to City Centre (after run) Runner 3: Transport to Humber Bridge from City Centre (before run) Runner 3: Transport from Sirius School to City Centre (after run) Runner 4: Transport to Sirius School from City Centre (before run) Runners are under no obligation to use this free service and are welcome to provide their own transport. Either way, please make sure you give yourself plenty of time to reach your start point. 16 The RB Hull Marathon 2015 www.thehullmarathon.co.uk 17 OUR PEOPLE MARATHON MAKERS Making the marathon great Helping to make your race experience a great one will be our Marathon Makers, volunteers from across the community who will be supporting you throughout the day in a variety of ways. We’ve had a tremendous response to our call for volunteers and it’s great to see people wanting to get involved in making this a great sporting event. Many will be marshals, encouraging and directing you around the route, but there’ll also be drivers, helpers at HQ, meeters and greeters and many more. Please feel free to show them your appreciation as you run around. Marathon Maker Training n order to ensure a great race experience for runners and marshals, many of our Marathon Makers have done a preparatory training session. This has covered the background to the event as well as giving them a taste of what will happen on the day and what their roles and duties will be. There’s so much to discover; from its 800 years of history to the ultra-modern submarium, The Deep. Why not make a weekend of it? 14 10 The Deep (1) is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world and is home to 3,500 fish, sharks, rays and a colony of Gentoo penguins. One of the city’s best assets is its series of free museums. Starting in the city centre, these include Ferens Art Gallery (2), one of the finest provincial galleries in the country. Across from Ferens is the Maritime Museum (3) charting the city’s seafaring past. 2 3 And all that’s without mentioning some of the Old Town’s other attractions such as the Arctic Corsair, Hull’s only remaining sidewinder trawler (7), as well as a modern marina and inspiring waterfront vistas (8) and much more…. 4 5 6 From here follow one of the city’s oldest streets, Whitefriargate, down to the Old Town and find the Museums Quarter on High Street. The Quarter features three distinctive attractions; Hull and East Riding Museum (4) which charts the area’s history from the dawn of time to the 17th century. Streetlife Museum (5) covers 200 years of transport history. The final free museum in the area is Wilberforce House (6), the birthplace of William Wilberforce, Hull MP and slavery abolitionist whose story is told through fascinating items including his journal, plantation records and personal stories. 24 HQ 9 N AGO PAR ANGE RCH INTE 3 2 16 12 13 11 8 15 6 5 4 7 1 8 150m 9 HERITAGE OPEN DAYS - Hull, 10-13 Sept Heritage Open Days (www.heritageopendays.org.uk) is a national scheme when for 4 days in the second week of September, buildings of historic or architectural interest which aren’t normally open to the public, open up for free. Hull’s Open Days are one of the best in the whole country and the four highlights we’ve picked out below are all within 5 minutes walk of the Event HQ so why not visit them whilst in the city? Holy Trinity Church 10 11 If all these aren’t enough, then there’s always shopping with Hull having 3 major shopping centres and a compact central shopping area. For fashion, St Stephens (9) with its major brands including H&M, Next, New Look and River Island is a must visit, while nearby Prospect Centre (10) features a range of popular high street stores including Boots, WH Smiths and Currys. Heading eastwards is the shopping centre which ‘floats’ on water – Princes Quay (11), a stone’s throw away from the heritage of the Old Town and with a wide range of choice from fashion to sportswear to food and drink. Continuing into the Old Town takes you to a broad range of boutique shops and bustling indoor market (12). 13 This 800 year old building is said to be the largest parish church in England. It has a light and airy interior with some fine examples of stained glass windows and ornate pew sculptures. Climb the tower to get an excellent panoramic view of the city and the runners finishing their race. Blaydes House 15 Built around 1740, this is the former home of the Blaydes family, shipbuilders and merchants, and gives an excellent idea of the type of living enjoyed by the Hull merchant class at this period. The Blaydes family were also responsible for the nearby construction of the world famous HMS Bounty. The RB Hull Marathon 2015 12 www.thehullmarathon.co.uk Hull Charterhouse 14 Founded in 1384 by Hull’s wealthy patron Sir Michael de la Pole as an almshouse for the elderly, the present building dates from 1780, the highlight of which is the Georgian era chapel whose finely carved pulpit, chandeliers and decorated plaster ceiling are all well worth a visit. Ye Olde White Harte 16 All of Hull’s Old Town pubs are worth exploring, but this one is maybe the best for it was here in 1642 in the little changed ‘plotting parlour’ that the momentous decision to refuse entry to King Charles I was taken, a decision which sparked the English Civil War! 25 AROUND THE ROUTE AROUND THE ROUTE Mile 8: West Park Football Shoot Out 0930 - 1130 See how accurately you can kick a football or try some penalty shoot outs with the Tigers Trust super inflatables. Plus it’s carnival in Barton so be prepared for a party atmosphere and street entertainment along Far Ings Road as well! There’ll be lots of chances to see runners around the route, but this is a rare chance to to see the runners as they go through ABP’s Albert Dock, just when they will most need support. Make sure you are in the best physical condition possible to take on the challenge. It is your responsibility to be ready to run a marathon. If you have any medical issues which you think may affect your participation (Heart Disease, Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy) or have experienced any unsettling symptoms in your training, make sure you see your GP before taking part. Any serious known medical conditions should be declared to the Event Organiser before the race and noted on your race number. All runners must complete Make sure you’re ready for the challenge the medical information on the back of their race number. Do not attempt to start the race if you have been feeling unwell (feverish, vomiting, severe diarrhoea, chest pains, serious muscle injuries) in the days before the event. You won’t be doing anyone, including yourself, any favours by forcing yourself to compete. How will I know I’m ready to run a marathon? While the answer to this will vary from individual to individual, one broad guideline is that if you can run 15 miles one month before the event and still feel that you can reasonably comfortably run a bit more, then you are probably at the right point in your training. If you don’t feel you can go on after 15 miles you might like to reconsider your participation – we do have a runner transfer system. Pre-Event Make sure you give yourself every possible chance of getting to the start line injury free by increasing your training load gradually and build in rest days or lighter training after heavy mileage sessions. On Day Make sure you check the weather forecast prior to the day to give yourself an idea of what to expect. If it’s a hot day (and our event takes place in mid-September when temperatures can still be high) make sure: -you have enough fluids in your body to start the race. If you’ve hydrated well before the event day, on race day this shouldn’t mean more than half a pint (250ml) of water or sports drink in the half hour before the start. Remember, drinking too much (hyponatraemia) can be equally damaging as drinking too little (dehydration). This applies before and after the race. Try to sip rather than gulp down drinks. -It is not obligatory to drink water at every drinks station but be mindful that you will be losing fluids around the course and will need to replace them. Understand Preparing for a hot day what your own body needs by experimenting on your longer training runs. -Use sun cream for exposed parts of the body. Consider wearing sunglasses or/and a peaked cap to keep glare from your eyes. Wear loose fitting, wicking clothes and consider a vest to ventilate armpits. -Understand that the hotter conditions will lead to slower times, so forget all thoughts of a PB – slow down and just enjoy the experience. 28 The RB Hull Marathon 2015 If it’s a cold day -Take longer to warm up than usual and be prepared to use the first few miles as part of that slow warm up. -Be prepared to wear a disposable old t-shirt, hat to the start assembly area which you can take off immediately before the start or as you’re running and start to get warmer. -Know where the baggage tent is so you can change into some warm clothes as soon as possible after finishing. How Do I Know I’m in Trouble September can be cold and wet too! We will have marshals and first aid professionals all around the course. If you think you might be in trouble, don’t hesitate to approach them to seek help. Dehydration - Getting thirsty is the body’s first response to let you know that you are low on fluids. Drink something! Other symptoms can include: • Dizziness or light-headedness • Headache • Dry mouth, lips and eyes Again, at these stages you can help yourself by getting something to drink. Don’t try to push on beyond these stages as you will do yourself serious damage. Slow down or stop, take on some fluids and recover before going again if you feel up to it. Others Blisters - Don’t wear new trainers for the marathon. Make sure that you have fully worn in any new trainers before attempting 26.2miles in them. If you do experience sores on your feet our medical team around the course will have plasters available to reduce the pain. Chafing - To avoid chafing, friction burns to the skin caused by constant rubbing of fabric, try out different garments in your longer training runs to discover which ones reduce rubbing. During the race try Vaseline or a specially formulated lubricant to reduce the irritation. Pace yourself to avoid ‘the wall’ Pacing - Cramping, exhaustion and hitting the wall can all be mitigated by following the correct pace. You will need to work out what is your ideal pace in your longer training plans, but be realistic and follow the golden advice not to start too quickly. Accept that you will suffer hardship at some point in the second half of the race but try to minimize this by keeping a sensible pace in the first half.
