In last year’s annual report Kinship Center announced our July 1, 2011 merger with the Oakland-based Seneca Family of Agencies. Just a few months later on March 1, 2012 we welcomed Canyon Acres, an Orange County child and family agency with a 31-year history, into the new family. Carol Biddle Executive Director Kinship Center and Seneca Family of Agencies Ken Berrick President and CEO Seneca Family of Agencies Kinship Center Many positive outcomes are falling into place in this first merger year. Canyon Acres has been able to fold its placement and mental health programs into Kinship Center’s and continue a set of unique community services to Orange County. Kinship Center’s programs in Southern California and on the Central Coast have been strengthened by the integration of Seneca’s superior data and outcomes reporting system, and we are positioned to be accredited by the end of 2012 through the prestigious Joint Commission, a landmark accomplishment for our statewide nonprofit. ® A Member of Seneca Family of Agencies Neil Gilbert, Chairman Board of Directors A year of mergers has led to a unique partnership with Irvine Company to restore the historic Canyon Acres Anaheim HIlls Ranch property as a therapeutic center. (See story on page 8) “We have convincingly seen the strategic value of our mergers and other collaborations to achieve impact and measurable change in a climate of diminishing resources.” Two members of Kinship Center’s former Board of Directors are seated on the Seneca Family of Agencies governing board and will soon be joined by a former Canyon Acres Director. We are especially pleased by the creation of two regional Leadership Boards in Monterey and Orange Counties that will continue to engage local community support. (See story on page 17) This report also highlights significant new collaborations: the opening of a unique children’s mental health clinic in partnership with First 5 Monterey County focused on family stabilization; foundation partnerships to challenge and stimulate successful fund raising; a new partnership with the Irvine Company in Orange County to refurbish the Canyon Acres Ranch property to house revitalized therapeutic programs for children; and more. In the past year we have convincingly seen the strategic value of our mergers and collaborations to achieve impact and measurable change in a climate of diminishing resources and gaps in services. We wish to express deepest thanks to all our partners and supporters, who enable us to offer the broadest scope of life-changing services to the most vulnerable children and families in our state. Kinship Center does not discriminate in the provision of its services, programs and products or in its employment practices. ©2012 Kinship Center Design by Adpartner, Inc., Seaside, CA Fiscally Confident 10 Community Supported 11 Volunteer Service and Leadership 17 Making A Difference! 28 years strong New Beginnings for Children 2 Kinship Center creates and strengthens “forever families” . . . those who will be there for a lifetime Outdoor Adventure Promotes Learning and Healing Young campers in a special Family Ties summer camping program learn life lessons such as teamwork, self-respect, cooperation and communication while building outdoor skills that promote healing from past trauma. T he strength of Kinship Center’s nearly three decades of success has been faithfulness to mission . . . to connect children to safe, loving families that will be there for life. Each year more than 2,500 children throughout California receive services from Kinship Center that help them heal from past abuse, neglect or abandonment and thrive in a stable new family. Statistics show that children who spend their childhoods in a series of foster homes or institutions without the love and support of a permanent family are likely to become dependent adults: homeless, chronically unemployed, mentally ill. 84% will become single parents. 20% of males will become career criminals. Kinship Center is committed to breaking this cycle A Talent and a Future Nine-year-old Logan and his caregiver grandma Debbie are proud that Logan has not only overcome his early trauma but has also discovered a life’s passion. After exposure to musical theater in Kinship Center’s Family Ties program, Logan found his voice and has become a featured soloist with chamber orchestras, college chorus ensembles, and other venues. by creating safe, permanent families and ensuring their success for traumatized children, through specialized training for adoptive parents and a host of professional and therapeutic services. As a result, more than 98% of Kinship Center families achieve long-lasting family stability, an exceptional success rate far in advance of the national norm for adoptive families. Building and Maintaining Connection: An alternative to adoption for some children is a relative’s home, and Kinship Center partners with Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties to bring critical services to relatives, primarily grandmothers, who have stepped forward to raise one or more children or teens, most with the scars of past trauma. Kinship Center’s ‘Family Ties’ program provides about 400 such families each month with emergency assistance, resources and referrals, education, counseling, parent training, children’s therapeutic services, legal assistance, support groups and more. Finding Stability with Long-lost Families Abandoned at birth, T.J. had never known anything but a succession of foster homes. More than anything, the 11-year-old wished for a family of his own. Recognizing Impact and Support Executive Vice President Lisa Fujimoto (left) of the Change a Life Foundation presents the “Most Impactful Grants in 2011” award to So CA Division Director Allison Maxon for improving the quality of life for foster and adoptive families facing catastrophic times. “We are proud to honor Kinship Center for the wonderful work that you do on behalf of your clients,” said Fujimoto. Kinship Center’s ‘Family Finding’ program, a former program of Canyon Acres, conducted a wide search and discovered family members around the country who were anxious to meet this unknown young relative. Today T.J. is being adopted by his aunt, and he looks forward to having a “forever family” at last. Children who grow to adulthood without the security of a permanent family overwhelmingly become society’s statistics in terms of homelessness, criminal behavior and mental health problems. Kinship Center’s Family Finding breaks this cycle for youth like Ricky (center in sunglasses), who has found a forever family. Family Finding uses sophisticated searching techniques to locate long-lost family members (to date more than 3,800 relatives have been located) for children who have been in the child welfare system for many years. Restoring a youth to his or her roots provides a new sense of identity and belonging, and helps the healing process for a child who has lived with severe trauma. Once located, these relatives are helped to build and strengthen new relationships so that children who have grown up believing they had no family are discovering their roots, experiencing new connections, and building trust in the prospect of lifelong family love and support. 3 Thriving Families and Communities Kinship Center builds and supports the family stability that is at the heart of successful communities New Children’s Clinic Helps Families in Crisis A collaboration with First 5 Monterey County, the Mental Health Services Act, and Monterey County Behavioral Health Department resulted in a new Kinship Center Children’s Clinic in North Salinas. Mayor Dennis Donahue, Supervisor Simon Salinas, First 5 Executive Director Francine Rodd, Monterey Co. DSES Director Elliott Robinson, and Board of Education member Francisco Estrada joined Kinship Center Executive Director Carol Biddle and Board Chair Sandy Haney, Seneca Family of Agencies CEO Ken Berrick and other guests in a March 2012 ribbon cutting hosted by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. The clinic offers preventive services to keep young children out of foster care as parents struggle with community and domestic violence, substance abuse, financial hardship and other stresses. 4 Under the leadership of new Clinic Director Jill Walker, Ph.D. (right), clinic staff help families build skills and empowerment through the clinic’s therapeutic playgroups, a parenting series and parent dialogue groups, on-site and in-home therapy, and expert consultation to local preschools. K inship Center’s therapeutic services provide an essential bridge for parents in helping a child with the scars of severe abuse or neglect find healing and become part of a new family. Without professional help a troubled child or teen can easily end up back in foster care or in an institution and remain there until age 18. Through Kinship Center’s five children’s clinics, more than 600 children each week work with masters and doctoral level licensed clinicians to overcome severe losses, build trust and learn to connect to a new family. Kinship Center’s family-centered therapeutic approach includes parents as critical partners in their child’s journey to stability and permanence. Building Stable Families with a Community of Support Recognizing Life Changing Outcomes The San Luis Blues baseball team honored Kinship Center’s local services for improving the lives of children in San Luis Obispo County. The first pitch at a June home game was thrown by 8-year-old Hunter, a member of a client family. Kinship Center therapy for children and families takes many forms and makes broad use of local community resources. Art, music, dance, drama, yoga, animal-assisted therapy, baking, gardening, sports, and nature are regularly used by expert therapists in creative ways to help children’s minds and bodies heal. Each summer youngsters participate in Kinship Center camps that use surfing, science, animals or dramatic arts to build trust and confidence in a group setting. Building specific community support for at-risk families is at the heart of a special “Wraparound” program for adoptive and other parents struggling with the most severely troubled children. Trained professionals work closely with the youth and also help parents develop skills and create important community networks to keep children from being placed in residential institutions or psychiatric hospitalization. Stable families are at the heart of thriving communities, and creating strong, healthy families is at the heart of Kinship Center’s mission. Camp K-9: Bonding, Learning and Fun A special July graduation of two-footed and four-footed campers marked the first year of Camp K-9, a program of Kinship Center’s Children’s Clinic in San Luis Obispo County. In partnership with the Equine Alliance Youth Foundation (who lent their facility), guidance from Linda Hardy, Behaviorist and former Humane Educator for San Luis Obispo CounXander and Keough ty’s Camp P.A.W.S., and donated funds from Eberle Winery, the camp provided an opportunity for adoptive and foster children to gain hands-on experience in how to teach dogs the skills needed to be a good pet. Meet Valkyrie, the Newest Member of the Therapeutic Horse Program! Located at Canyon Acres Ranch in Anaheim Hills, the Therapeutic Horse Program is now a joint program of Canyon Acres and Kinship Center, designed to help children with past trauma develop positive relationships. The program is one of very few PATH Premiere Accredited Centers. Valkyrie, an orphaned 6-year-old Icelandic horse, hand-raised as a foal, is part of a team of five horses who work with children ages 6-12 to help them build trust and selfesteem. “Camp K-9 uses rescue dogs that are in need of a family and a home,” said Kinship Center Clinician and Camp Coordinator, Jennifer Hudgins. “That really resonates with the kids in our therapeutic programs who participate.” Caden and Peanut Campers built confidence and responsibility as they learned the basics of pet care and obedience and how to encourage positive behavior in their charges. 5 Education, Innovation, Empowerment Kinship Center provides leadership for positive and lasting change with training, influence and innovation Summit Recognizes Staff Dedication and Outcomes A special Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) award at the May 2012 Summit in Ohio honored Kinship Center Family Recruiters Sarah Hutson (left) and Kim Felder for their dedication and success in exceeding goals for placement of children with the greatest need: older teens, children with disabilities and those with severe emotional scars. “I can’t think of anything more important or rewarding,” said Felder, who was recognized in 2008 by the U.S. Congress. 6 Kinship Center is a longtime partner of WWK, a program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. T his year Kinship Center’s Education Institute joined with Seneca’s Training Department, disseminating best practices in child welfare and mental health to practitioners and families in California and nationwide. Two signature Kinship Center curricula — ACT and “Pathways to Permanence” lead the industry in equipping professionals and parents to manage complex adoption and trauma-related issues, and this year Kinship Center experts were featured speakers at the Child Welfare League of America National Conference, the North American Council on Adoptable Children Conference, the San Diego County Systems of Care Conference, the 2012 CASA Conference, and other prestigious forums. Fostering Education and Outcomes: Each fall masters and doctoral students from California campuses come to Kinship Center for practical training in social work and psychology; agency staff also provide service and influence on a number of national and regional boards and committees. Our positive impact is enhanced by collaborations with public and private partners, and we leverage these partnerships to manage diminishing resources and create exceptional outcomes. The Importance of Connections Two Kinship Center staff members addressed a national audience in Washington D.C. at the 2012 conference of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC). Mom-son team Kim and Paul Felder (far left and right) joined Bryan Miller and Sari Grant from the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services to speak on helping foster teens form sustaining lifelong relationships. Kinship Center leaders are widely recognized and respected voices in child welfare, and our organization continues to innovate, helping formulate policy and promote legislation that serves the nation’s children and families. Sharing Model Practice The Power of a Story: Teen Victims Speak Out Two Southern California Kinship Center teen clients found the courage to write about their experiences as victims of bullying after a Kinship Center Wraparound staff member strongly encouraged them to enter an essay competition. The goal of the contest, sponsored by the Orange County Social Services Agency LGBT League, was to address bullying on school campuses. The two young women submitted powerful essays that won them two of the three competition awards. In February, Executive Director Carol Biddle shared Kinship Center’s clinical and educational practices with Linda Steele (right), Curriculum Chair for the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) in Huntsville, Alabama. “NCAC’s goal is to prevent further emotional distress, fear and trauma for a child in the aftermath of abuse…that’s why I’m here to learn more about Kinship Center’s comprehensive approach,” said Steele. “Imagine being terrified to go to school because of being afraid of someone making fun of you, calling you names and making you feel unaccepted and worthless,” wrote one. “‘I want to die so all this ends’ is what many victims of bullying think about on a daily basis as a way to cope with such a malicious situation. I say this because I am a victim of bullying and that was my reality for so many years... Bullies need to understand that their actions are detrimental to others.. .” “Maybe if the teachers at school had noticed that something was wrong, things would have been better. . . I could be a better student,” wrote the other. “And trust me . . . it made me stronger. When no one has the courage to step up for those who get picked on, I’m there. If there is any way I can stop it, even if just for a little while, I will. Someone has to make the difference.” 7 Partnerships for Success 8 Kinship Center’s vision and practice embrace excellence, collaboration, effective use of resources, and the most positive outcomes for children and families Many Hands Contribute to Renovation for a Therapeutic Center The first group of Irvine Company volunteers launched a renovation project on June 23-24, 2012 for the Canyon Acres Ranch in Anaheim Hills. Besides the major sponsorship of the Irvine Company, other goods and services have been donated to date by Foundation Real Estate Advisors, Rolling Green Landscape, RGS Landscape, Bizzy Bee Lawn Care, The Home Depot, Optima Asset Management Services, Stephen Appel, and Three Brothers III, Inc. dba Zito’s Pizza. Exterior Designer Miriam Tate Company is providing extensive design consulting to ensure a unified, welcoming look. M ore than 60 volunteers from the Irvine Company of Newport Beach participated in a “Community Build Day” at the Canyon Acres Ranch in June, completing the first part of a year-long renovation partnership to refurbish and equip the Anaheim Hills facility to accommodate a variety of therapeutic programs for children with backgrounds of abuse or trauma. Irvine Company earlier announced their philanthropic plans to support the revitalization of the 4.6-acre property, which originally functioned as a group home until closure of Canyon Acres’ residential program in 2008. As the result of the recent merger of Kinship Center and Canyon Acres, the property serves as an outpa- A Partnership for Kids Board member Jeff Lerch, here with the Irvine Company’s Heidi Molgaard, initiated and is spearheading the partnership that will accomplish the first two phases of a renovation to revitalize a beloved community icon. tient mental health facility for individual and group therapy, a therapeutic after-school program and a premiere accredited Equine Psychotherapy Program (See story on page 5). Kinship Center’s Anaheim Children’s Clinic will also relocate to the Ranch when renovations are complete. Camp PAKK: An 11-year Partnership Gives Families New Hope Some 140 campers, parents and counselors gathered in August for a special family camp on the Stevenson School campus in Pebble Beach, directed by Kinship Center in partnership with Santa Clara County. A Team with a Vision An idea is born and takes shape as staff and volunteers come together from around the state. Standing (l-r in back) are Carol Biddle, Executive Director of Kinship Center; Ken Berrick, CEO of Seneca Family of Agencies; board members Harald Herrmann and Jeff Lerch; Allison Maxon, So CA Division Director; Shane Patterson, Seneca Facilities Director; Gina Capitano, Facilities Supervisor; (in front) Ron Brown, Program Director, and Kristine Peters, Director of Development, So CA. Camp PAKK (Parents Adopting Kids Kamp) provides special needs parenting workshops, kids’ discussion and project groups, therapeutic sessions, and family activities, all designed to support adoptive families with extraordinary needs, many of whom are in crisis. “Parents and children learn new coping skills, have bonding experiences, meet others with similar challenges, and create a lasting network of support,” says Kinship Center’s Carol Bishop, Camp Director. “They leave renewed, rejuvenated and hopeful.” In Phase One of the refurbishment, volunteers began the demolition and remodeling process of a former group residence; future phases will include converting the main house into a home environment, removing and replanting trees and shrubs, and repairing other existing structures on the property. The estimated underwriting value of Irvine Company’s contribution exceeds $200,000. Local board and staff members are proactively planning for how to raise the additional funds needed to complete the project. “We want to express our deepest appreciation to the Irvine Company for championing this major renovation project,” said Kinship Center So CA Division Director Allison Maxon. The “Adoption Angels” 8-9 year-old girls group poses with some Kinship Center therapeutic staff members, who bring expertise in meeting the needs of children with past trauma. Santa Clara County participants in Camp PAKK include Irene Peoples, Supervisor of Post Adoption Services (2nd from right) and Tracy Bowers, Program Manager II, Family and Permanency Bureau (3rd from right). 9 Fiscally Confident A Volunteer Auxiliary Celebrates Five Years of Support This year the Salinas-based “Kinship Support Unlimited” (KSU) Auxiliary Chapter will mark its fifth anniversary of support to Kinship Center. Here, members catered the March 2012 open house for the new Children’s Clinic in North Salinas. (See story on page 4) The brainchild of Kinship Center adoptive parent Susan Guidotti (right) and volunteer Monika Fewtrell (left), the 18-member auxiliary has already raised thousands of dollars for Kinship Center programs in Monterey County and provides hands-on help with special needs of Kinship Center clients. KSU President Monika Fewtrell (right) was honored at the November 2011 Philanthropy Day by Kinship Center No CA Division Director Carol Bishop and others. A gift from KSU to the Kinship Center Cypress Committee (center photo) provided direct support for former foster children trying to complete their education. Flicker Challenge Grants: Major Support and Faith in the Mission Three challenge grants from Monterey County foundations have sparked purposeful fundraising efforts and a significant increase in new giving for Kinship Center. In early Spring 2012 the Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation awarded $50K, to be matched by other fundraising, and in June the agency was able to make the match through aggressive fundraising efforts and strategies to attract new donors. Also in the Spring the Monterey Peninsula Foundation notified Kinship Center of a three-year $150K challenge to build donor relationships that support families taking on the care of traumatized children. Kinship Center board members are developing new donor initiatives to generate the matching support. In July 2012 the Harden Foundation made a $25K challenge grant in support of Kinship Center programs that help relative caregivers — primarily grandparents — meet the profound needs of children in their care. “We are so grateful for this expression of faith in Kinship Center,” said Sandy Haney, Chair of the Leadership Board in Monterey County. “The support from these key funders inspires us to greater efforts.” in memory of Irwin Gluckman Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Speyer in memory of Robert Heess Ms. Patricia Heess in memory of: Ed Smith Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Culler in memory of Frank Greco Gabilan Chapter Auxiliary in memory of Mary James Mr. and Mrs. Jim Guidotti in memory of Manuel Vais Mr. and Mrs. Michael L. The 5th grader lives with her grandparents and has struggled to find her place in the world and something she can be good at. Her grandparents are challenged to stretch their limited income to meet the significant needs of the grandchildren they are raising. Kinship Center staff recognized how Renee’s life might take a more positive turn if she had a special skill and the chance to pursue a dream. They turned to the Change a Life Foundation for help. (See story on page 3) The Foundation provided grant funds to purchase a drum set and lessons for Renee, and in June 2012 she made her debut in her school’s talent show. Today Renee believes that she has the power to make her dreams come true. Once again, the Foundation has changed a life. The Chapter’s long history of fundraising for the needs of foster and adoptive children pre-dates Kinship Center, but since 1985 members have devoted their energies and hearts to supporting the agency’s programs in San Benito County, with total giving to date of more than $600K. Gabilan’s signature fundraiser is the oldest consecutive Wine & Food Tasting in California, attracting some 1,000 guests each September to the lush tree-shaded lawns of the historic Paicines Ranch in Tres Pinos. 15 Monterey Peninsula Host Lions Mr. Keith Moon Mr. David Morales Ms. Prudence Morford Mr. Peter G. Board member Jeff Davi and wife Kelly participated with Kinship Center as a selected charity of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, raising funds through the generosity of Mercedes-Benz USA, Rolex, and Pebble Beach Co. Orange County programs benefited from the 27th annual Par Fore Kids Golf Classic. Here with board member Erin Lastinger, noted golfing pro Esteban Toledo joined golfers for the day at Yorba Linda Country Club, a primary sponsor of the event. The Harvest Moon Festival brings together Monterey County’s finest wine and food at Kinship Center’s headquarters in the Salinas Valley. Board member John D’Arrigo and wife Sandy enjoy the evening of tastes, dancing, auctions, and a stirring program. From I Padrini di Antonello: “An Evening under the Stars” takes on new meaning at the Antonello Ristorante in Costa Mesa, as guests dine, dance and bid for exclusive travel and wine opportunities to support area programs. Dozens of wineries and restaurateurs donate their wares each fall for the Gabilan Auxiliary Chapter’s Wine and Food Tasting, the oldest such event in California, which supports Kinship Center programs in San Benito County. Volunteer Service and Leadership Board Commitments Create Strength Statewide In addition to the Seneca Family of Agency Board of Directors, Kinship Center is supported by a statewide non-governance board structure that comprises key community leaders. Twenty-nine regional “Leadership Board” members cultivate local interest and support for programs in their counties that serve needy children and families. Kinship Center and Seneca Family of Agencies are particularly grateful for the active involvement of many members of the former Canyon Acres Board of Directors, who have joined with Kinship Center board members in Orange County to engage local donors in helping the most vulnerable children in the region. 17 Leadership Board Sandy Haney, Chair Central Coast Sharyn L.
