Cohasset Elder Affairs:
Services, Programs and Activities for Seniors and their Families
Did You Know?
The MassDOT, Registry of Motor Vehicles and Highway Divisions, along with the Massachusetts State Police, are advising
motorists of a new law which
took effect on April 7, 2015 requiring the use of headlights
and taillights on motor vehicles
during inclement weather and
when windshield wipers are in
use. The law is intended to increase safety and visibility of
vehicles on the Commonwealth’s roadway.
The changes to Mass General
Law Chapter 85, Section 15,
signed into law in January, require that front and rear motor
vehicle lights be activated in all
of the following conditions:



When windshield wipers are
on
When low light or weather
conditions prevent other
vehicles or persons from
being seen at 500 feet
From ½ hour after sunset to
½ hour before sunrise
Relying on daytime running
lights for these conditions is not
sufficient under the law. A violation of this law is considered a
surchargeable minor motor vehicle traffic law violation for insurance purposes. For more
information on the Safe Driver
Insurance Plan and insurance
surcharge information, please
visit the RMV’s Merit Rating
Board.
Pictures, clockwise from top left: Members of the Cohasset Elder Affairs Board of Directors conduct their monthly meeting at Willcutt Commons. Angie Mulligan and Sandra Murray paint a Cohasset Harbor scene during “Denise’s Paint Party.” Seniors enjoy a lunch prepared by “Celebrity
Chef” John Campbell in the Kierce dining room at Willcutt Commons. Gentle yoga participants
work on flexibility.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE!
All Tuesday and Thursday CEA activities will now occur at
Willcutt Commons, located at 91 Sohier Street!
In addition, special events may be held at Willcutt Commons on selected Wednesdays (to be announced in
advance).

May is “Older Americans Month”… what does that mean? Who are older Americans? Many people struggle to define seniors. I hear 65 years and older or 60
years and older bandied about as the ultimate definition of a senior, while there are those
who are 80, 90 and beyond who do not consider themselves to be an elder. Personally, I
believe it’s never too early to start planning on being “older.”
I believe that age is a state of mind, more than a chronological ruler. A healthy, active, engaged 90- year-old sometimes feels he or she is younger than those in their sixties who
suffer from a variety of health issues, boredom, loneliness, or a lack of passion for life.
I believe it is what you do with what you have that is important – how you spend the next
phase of your life. Many times it is a conscious choice that we make for ourselves.
(However, I do acknowledge there are forces beyond our control, at times.)
Please come discover what we’re all about. As we transition into our new center, you’ll notice we have programs designed for active “older Americans,” as well as for those who may
struggle a bit. With additional space comes enhanced offerings. Perhaps you would like to
participate in Gentle Yoga or Yoga Nidra (which includes meditation), a Caregivers Support
Group or Line Dancing? This month, we introduce a Multi-Cultural Group, an exploration of
Boston (via van) with professional guide Stephen Collins, and a program on Releasing
clutter through Hypnosis. Our ongoing programs, A Matter Balance, knitting, book group,
Tai-chi and Sit to Get Fit round out our diverse selection.
Regardless of your age, if you enjoy being around folks who like to be around folks, I hope
you will join us.
And lest I forget…hats off to all ‘Older’ Americans! We salute you.

Arthritis Aids
Having trouble performing everyday tasks as a result of arthritis? With a little research, you can purchase handy aids that make working
with stiff hands easier. Here are some examples:
Dexter DuoGlide knives have soft, textured handles that let you chop foods using a rocking motion with less hand strain. http://
knives.dexter1818.com/shop/duoglide.html
West Ben Electric Can Opener is a hands-free can opener that starts and stops automatically once you lock the can in place. http://
westbend.com/can-opener-metallic.html
Zim Jar opener is available in wall mounted or under the counter versions and holds the lid as you use both hands to twist open a jar or
bottle. http://www.arthritissupplies.com/zim-jar-opener.html
OXO Good Grips makes easy to grip cooking and baking utensils with large, soft handles that may be found at your favorite kitchen supply store.
Aids for Arthritis offers a tool that helps you reach for your seatbelt in the car. A seat belt handle attaches to your existing seat belt strap
and extends out six inches to bring the belt within easy reach, making buckling up a breeze. www.aidsforarthritis.com.
Simple everyday tasks like buttoning and zipping clothing can be tough with stiff arthritic hands. One arthritis friendly, multi-purpose tool
comes to the rescue, slipping buttons into holes on one end and hooking zippers to make them easier to pull. A soft rubber handle makes
it easy to grip. $12.95 from www.arthritissupplies.com.
Extend Your Reach. Bending down or stretching up for items can be difficult when you’re stiff and sore. This lightweight, portable tool
allows you to comfortably retrieve out-of-reach items. Slip-resistant jaws have a magnet in the tip to make picking up small metal items
like paperclips easier too. The pistol-grip handle is comfortable to operate — even with stiff arthritic hands. http://
www.everydayhealth.com/arthritis-pictures/10-terrific-arthritis-gadgets.aspx#03
In addition, consider the following:
Lever faucet handles rather than twist-type provide better leverage for easier turning. Door knob extenders fit over standard doorknobs,
making them easier to turn. A big lamp switch is a large knob adapter that provides better leverage for turning on a lamp. Car key turners attach to your car key and offer better leverage. A gas cap removal tool works like a wrench and fits most gas caps, and a steering
wheel cover fits over the steering wheel to make the wheel larger in size and easier to grip.

Nancy’s News
What an exciting time to be a senior in Cohasset. As you may have heard, we are offering programming in Willcutt Commons on Tuesdays and
Thursdays with occasional special events on Wednesdays.
Everyone who comes through the doors of the new building
has remarked on the beauty of the space and how homey it
feels. In addition to new programs, delicious lunches are
being prepared in the kitchen by private volunteer chefs or
provided by local establishments such as 5 South Main, Cohasset Pizza House, and French Memories. The sense of
community and camaraderie during lunch is wonderful. Join
us to take part in the fun! We love to have folks stop in to
check out the new place, so come by any Tuesday or
Thursday, and we’ll give you a tour.
Thank you from the Friends

Want to play cards or dominoes? We have a few folks interested in participating in various games such as gin, spades,
whist, pinnacle, cribbage, etc. Let me know your favorite
game. The day and time will be determined once we know
what works best for the majority. Now is the time to get in
and make this space your own! Call 781-383-9112 with any
questions or to voice your preference!
Ahoy all travelers! We are looking for new members for our
International group which will meet the third Tuesday of the
month at 2:30 pm. This group not only seeks people who
were born elsewhere, but also those who have traveled to
other countries, married in other countries, have relatives
from other countries… It’s an all- inclusive group. Join us
and share your own experiences!
Do you have an old/ unused cell phone? Please consider
donating it to Cellular Recycler. In the United States alone,
an estimated 500 million cell phones have been retired…
meaning they sit unused in someone’s home or end up in
the trash. Cell phones contain harmful materials like lead
and cadmium that are released as phones break down in
landfills. NOT GOOD! By recycling them with us, you will
help the environment and Elder Affairs. A portion of the proceeds from these recycled cell phones will be applied to programs at CEA. Collected phones are either recycled for their
precious metals according to EPA standard or are refurbished for use in developing countries During the refurbishing process, the memory of each cell phone is “flashed” to
wipe out any previous information stored on the phone and
allow for reprogramming. Boxes are available for drop off at
Willcutt Commons, 91 Sohier Street and 3 North Main
Street.
