G’day Athletes,
The Mighty Hamptons Triathlon has come a long way since 1982. While looking through the archives, we
decided we had to bring back something from this historic event. We got together as a team and it came
down to two choices: Change the run back to the original 10 mile run or bring the Mighty Hamptons
Newspaper back to life. Since you are reading this, you probably know what the majority voted for!
Maybe for the 40th Anniversary we will have the Race return to its original distance of a 1.5 mile swim,
25 mile bike and a 10 mile run.

Triathlon. Take your time to read and enjoy this publication. A lot of effort has gone into the paper and it
has passed through many a team member’s hands.
We hope all of you have a great race, and we ask you to pay attention while out on the course, listen to
the staff, volunteers, police and STAY SAFE. We wish you all GOOD SKILL, as there is no LUCK in this
journey; your hard work and dedication is what will get you to the finish line.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
My name is Tiger Britt.
I am a senior at Pierson High School and I have lived in Sag Harbor for 3 years. At
Pierson, I am a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB DP),
an educational program that provides a more involved way of learning for students and
is designed to offer students an experience that will provide the skills and habits for
life in the 21st century.
A part of the IB DP is a community service project for CAS (Creativity, Action, Service). This project
has to show creativity and service which is why I have helped EventPower and the North Coast
Subaru Mighty Hamptons Triathlon revitalize the triathlon newspaper. My role was to approach local
businesses that had an interest in advertising. This process has been a fun and informative experience,
as I have gotten to work directly with several people at EventPower and with local businesses in Sag
Harbor and East Hampton that were supportive of this school project.
I am also the captain of the Pierson High School Cross Country team and will be participating in the
2013 North Coast Subaru Mighty Hamptons Triathlon. I am proud to say that this will be the second
year that my team will be volunteering at the triathlon to help support this local competition of
athleticism and challenge.
END YOUR SEASON IN MONTAUK
Montauk is one of the birth places of triathlon in the NE
USA. Athletes enjoy this venue for its beauty and small town
atmosphere.
The MightyMan Montauk weekend will showcase Montauk at
a time when the weather is still nice but the summer crowds
are not as heavy. This is a great family weekend to spend on
the East End with the Olympic and Half Iron distances on
Sunday and a Sprint distance race on Saturday. The awards
party takes place on Sunday at Sole East! Come for the
Party, Stay for the Race!
Come out to Montauk, join us, get inspired and support our
challenged athletes. On Saturday at the Sprint distance
event, we will host the NE USAT Regional Para Triathlete
Championships!

THE HISTORY OF
“THE MIGHTY HAMPTONS TRIATHLON”
The Mighty Hamptons is one of the longest running
triathlons in the NE USA and will be run for the 32nd time
this September 8, 2013 (the sport of triathlon is barely 35
years old). Some events have humble beginnings, but the
Mighty Hamptons came bursting out in 1982 and immediately
established itself as one of the world's premiere triathlons and
an iconic Long Island event that would inspire people around
the globe (as far as New Zealand!) and showcase the beauty of
the Hamptons.
2. John Howard: Raced at Mighty Hamptons from 1982
– 1985. John is a member of the Cycling Hall of Fame,
seven Time National Champion cyclist, three time
Olympian and 1980 Hawaii Ironman World Champion.
3. Allison Roe: Flown in from New Zealand to participate,
Allison was the current women’s marathon world record
holder and just trying her hand at triathlons.
4. The Puntous twins: (Patricia and Sylvie) from Canada
won just about every race they entered in the early and
mid 1980’s.
5. Stu Mittleman: An ultra distance runner who at the time
held the six day record.
a company was formed to nurture and guide it. EventPower
was established in 1999 to revitalize the Mighty Hamptons
and have its future live up to and exceed its past. The Mighty
North Fork was also produced by EventPower that year to
create the Long Island Triathlon Series.
When the original organizers lost their title sponsor, they
decided to sell the Mighty Hamptons to the Southampton
Hospital. Although the hospital did the best they could to
keep the event running, they did not have anyone on staff
who realized the small things that made the event what it

EventPower thanks all the athletes, spectators, municipalities,
organizers and the community that have made and continue
to make the Mighty Hamptons the iconic and legendary event
it is.

There are a few interesting things to note about the state of
the sport of triathlon in 1982:
• There were no standard distances (other than the
Ironman Distance*) for triathlons like there are today.
Every race was its own distance, and the organizers
usually came up with the distances to fit the area of the
race and have a finish time in the ball park of a marathon
time. The Mighty Hamptons started out with a 1.5 mile
swim, 25 mile bike and a 10 mile run. Eventually the
distance settled in to be an Olympic Distance** race like
it is today.
• There were no aerobars, swimming wetsuits, gels, power
meters, etc.
• Also, there were no timing chips, times were recorded by
people reading the body markings.

was. Over time the attendance declined to the point that they
reached out to a local athlete and coach, Steve Tarpinian,
for guidance on what they should do to re-establish the
event as the premiere triathlon it had been. After a few
years, it became clear the race would only have a future if

triathlon. The who’s who list is too long to put all the notables
in this paper but here are a few:
1. Dave Scott: In 1982 Dave Scott was already putting his
stamp on the Hawaii Ironman and would go on to win
Six World Titles! It was fitting the event organizers flew
him in from California to participate in the first Mighty
Hamptons race.

*Ironman Distance: Do you know how the Ironman Distance
came to be? It was a Honolulu bar room discussion of some
Navy buddies debating who was the best athlete. Was it the
guy who won the 2.4 mile Waikiki Rough Water Swim or the
guy who won the 112 mile around Oahu bike race or the
guy who won the Honolulu marathon? After discussing it
a bit, the idea came: Hey, let’s do an event combining all
three and anyone who can do that is an Ironman! The first
Ironman was in 1978 on Oahu and in 1980 it was moved to
the Big Island.
**Olympic (also known as International) Distance: In an
effort by the International Triathlon Committee and most
National Governing Bodies to get the sport of triathlon in
the Olympics, a standard distance was established. Those
distances are: 1.5 k Swim, 40 k bike and 10 k run (.93
mile swim, 24.8 mile bike and 6.2 mile run). Few Olympic
Distance races are exact to the meter, especially on the bike,
since considerations and limitations of available roadways
make this challenging. Unless it is for a national or
international championship, generally the bike distance can
range from 20 – 28 miles. Mighty Hamptons bike distance is
23.8 miles.
SAG HARBOR TEACHER INSPIRES
STUDENTS TO TRI !
Doug Alnwick is the technology teacher and the boys’ varsity cross-country coach at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor.
After competing in and winning several marathons such as the Suffolk County Half-Marathon in 1982, Mr. Alnwick was an
accomplished runner and athlete. Mr. Alnwick was first introduced to triathlons while riding his bike past Long Beach during
the summer of 1982 and watching people set up tents for the first annual Mighty Hamptons Triathlon. After seeing this as a
new challenge to pursue, Mr. Alnwick signed up and was set to compete against elite triathletes who were brought in for this
triathlon. “By this point, I was already a great runner, but I had never competed on a bike or in swimming. I had done these
things many times before, but never in a competition.” After racing in his first triathlon, Mr. Alnwick continued to compete in
the Mighty Hamptons Triathlon for the next five years from 1982-1987.
Mr. Alnwick is now the coach for the boy’s cross-country varsity team,
which runs and competes against several other schools on Long Island.
The team has run in several major invitationals in the Northeast,
including the Brown University Cross Country Invitational. In 2012,
both the boys and girls cross-country teams became involved with the
Mighty Hamptons Triathlon by working at the water stations. “It was
such a blast to have the teams be involved with this great event. It
was a lot of fun and I am very glad that some of my runners are now
inspired to compete in this triathlon.”

The Palisades Parks Conservancy in partnership with EventPower
introduces the third annual
Escape to the Palisades Half Marathon & 5K Run.
A half-marathon and 5K run along the scenic Hudson River shoreline
and within the Palisades Interstate Park. The half marathon course will
challenge athletes as they run to the hills, with over 1300 feet of gain
and loss of elevation. This is the perfect race for all triathletes as there
is a secure bike area set up near the finish line, This allows athletes the
opportunity to turn the race into the perfect brick workout.
