Chairperson’s Greeting Welcome to the 27
th
Branford resident
and six-time festival
volunteer Barbara
Barringham is the 2011
Branford Festival Chair.

Branford Festival
It’s June and we all know what that means:
graduations, weddings, baby showers, and
….the 27th Annual Branford Festival! On behalf
of the entire festival committee and corporate
board, welcome!
For the last six months, dedicated
volunteers have been making plans to present
a weekend of food, fun, shopping, and musical
entertainment for the entire town to enjoy. Every
year, the festival brings thousands of people to
the green on Father’s Day weekend. In fact, the
festival is the number-one attended event in
town and the unofficial kick-off for summer!
This event would not be possible without
all the hard work of committee volunteers and
the financial support of the festival’s numerous
business sponsors. Please take a moment to
thank a committee member—it’s not hard to
find us, just look for the tie-dye shirts. Also,
take the time to notice all the banners hung
above and around the stage as well as the
flag pole banners on Main Street. These are
business sponsors that support the festival
each year—and support our school students
all year long. Please think about supporting our
sponsors during the year with your business.
I would also like to thank all the citizens
who donated in response to our residential
fundraising effort. Whether you are a new
donor or an annual donor, know that your
donation is greatly appreciated. Lastly, thank
you to all those who responded to my plea
for help—you know who you are—and to the
festival volunteers that turn out each year to
donate time during the weekend, adults and
kids alike. I would like to take this opportunity
to thank you all—volunteers, sponsors,
and donors—from the bottom of my heart.
This festival would not be possible without us
all working together!
Annual Branford Festival
Let’s take a walk through the festival
weekend. Starting at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, the
festivities kick off with a parade featuring the
Town Band, the 2nd Company Governor’s Foot
Guard, and other participants terminating at
the flag pole on the Green to raise the Festival
Flag. The Town Band kicks off the musical
entertainment on the front stage followed by
the Branford High School Concert Choir. Take
a stroll down to the food court and sample
some fried dough pizza, a cheese steak sub, a
Caesar chicken salad, some Thai food, maybe
something sweet from Holy Cannoli, or even
some ice cream or Italian ice. Come back to the
front stage to enjoy the music of The Hitlist,
last year’s Sunday Superstars. Stick around for
our featured act Christine Ohlman and Rebel
Montez, with Branford’s own Sin Sisters, who
take the stage at 8:45 p.m.
Return early on Saturday morning and enjoy
a hearty pancake breakfast, an egg & bacon
sandwich, or a cinnamon bun with coffee. Just
remember to pace yourself to save enough
energy to make it through the Chamber of
Commerce’s Craft & Business Expo, which
runs until 4 p.m. After all that cruising, it’s time
for some lunch or to splurge on some funnel
cake or strawberry shortcake. Time for a
break? Sit down and enjoy the entertainment
on the Backstage, including the musical talents
of our elementary and intermediate schools
and a Zumba presentation! Or check out
the entertainment on Main Street, including
Because, MSRP, Steamroller, and our very
own Branford Has Talent competition. Entries
have been submitted and finalists have been
selected to come back and compete live on
Saturday. The top three contestants will perform
on the main stage on Sunday at 3 p.m. and a
first-place winner will be selected! Once the
Business and Craft Expo wraps up, bring your
chairs and blankets to the Green and get ready
to enjoy The Taxmen, Freeplay, and, at 8:45
p.m., get ready to rock out with Satisfaction, a
Rolling Stones tribute band.
Let’s not forget the kids! There will be rides,
a fun house, a moon bounce, and games to
keep them happy all weekend long. They can
get their faces painted again, too. The Kids’
Activity area is open on Friday from 5 to 10
p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and
on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An all-day
discount bracelet, available for all the rides in
the Kids’ Activity area is offered for the first time
this year on Father’s Day only!
For Sunday, get those sneakers on and think
about participating in the Road Race or just
come cheer the runners and walkers. Road Race
registration is at 8:30 a.m.; the health walkers
step off at 10 a.m.; followed by the five-mile
runners at 10:15 a.m.; and the fun runners at
11:30 a.m. Food vendors will be ready to serve
up their specialties first thing in the morning and
all afternoon. While you’re on the Green, don’t
miss the Annual Baking Contest. This year’s
theme is tropical–think Margaritaville–pineapple
and coconut! Sounds yummy!
The annual Classic Car Show will be on
display on the Green accompanied by The
Barons, an Oldies Band to entertain young and
old. This year’s car show is dedicated to long
time festival committee member and festival car
show founder, Gary Dinello, who sadly passed
away in May. Gary’s dedication, hard work, and
inspiration have made the car show what it is
today. He will be sorely missed! After the road
race, baking contest, and car show awards are
presented, get ready to lay back and enjoy the
sounds of Changes in Latitudes, a premier
Jimmy Buffet tribute band. Wrapping up the
afternoon, the winners of the Branford’s Got
Talent contest perform at 3 p.m.
Once again, welcome to the 27th annual
Branford Festival. Enjoy a weekend of food,
fun, friends, and fabulous entertainment on
the Green. Visit the festival website at www.
branfordfestival.com to enjoy pictures of the
event, past and present. I thank my committee
members again for their hard work and
dedication to give the citizens of Branford this
opportunity. They have worked tirelessly since
January to make this weekend the memorable
event that it is. It has been my honor and
privilege to work with such a fine group of
people. Thank you for allowing me to be your
chair. Enjoy the Fest!!!
Barbara Barringham, Festival Chair

Gary Dinello Classic Car Show Sunday, June 19 at 10 a.m.
The Branford Festival once again features the
Classic Car Cruise on Sunday, June 19.
This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Gary
Dinello, who passed away this year. Gary was a longtime festival committee member and founder of the
annual car show.
Due to the activity on the Town Green and the Road
Race, all participants are asked to arrive between 7:30
and 9:30 a.m. and to proceed to the Green down Main
Street following the signs. All cars should be in position
for viewing and judging by 10 a.m. A $10 entrance fee
includes a goody bag and T-shirt.
Judging begins at approximately noon, followed by
distribution of awards and raffle prizes. Award categories
include “Top 10,” “Best in Show,” and more!
All are welcome to bring cars, trucks, and bikes.
There will be a nice open space to display cars, trucks,
and bikes right on the Town Green, with oldies music
being played just for us.
For more information about the car show, contact
chairman Kevin Cudgma at 203-868-2013 or
kcudgma@yahoo.com.

The Barons perform Sunday during
the car show, on Sunday, June 19. One
of the tri-state area’s most popular oldies
group, this is a band that goes perfectly
with the classic and antique cars of the
Car Cruise. A band that can boast more
than 30 years of performing experience
and the area’s top musicians, the Barons
are known by fans for their 1963 hits,
“Pledge of A Fool,” “Remember Rita” on
Epic Records, and “Possibility” on Old
Town Records recorded under the name
The Crowns. The Barons have shared
the stage with groups that include Kenny
Vance and The Planotones, Brenda Lee,
Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge,
The Duprees, The Classics, The Passions,
The Mystics, The Harptones, The Tokens,
The Skyliners, The Drifters, The Shangrilas, Lloyd Price, Eugene Pitt & The Jive
Five, The Del-Vikings, TheTeenagers,
Earl Lewis & The Channels,Randy & The
Rainbows, Johnny & Joe, The Chantels,
The Tymes, The Orlons, Herb Cox & The
Cleftones, and The Regents, in addition
to backing up Johnny Tillotson with music
and vocals.

Record Crowd Expected at Branford Road Race
Sunday, June 19 at 10:05 a.m.
Start Times
Fitness Walk: 10:05 a.m.
5-Mile Road Race: 10:15 a.m.
Fun Run: 11:30 a.m.

The 31st annual Father’s Day Road Race is on Sunday, June 19 and
race organizers are expecting a record crowd of nearly 3,000 participants
for the 5-mile Road Race, Fitness Walk, and Fun Run.
The race field is already well ahead of last year’s record number of
participants for one of the country’s largest 5-mile races and one of New
England’s top running events.
“We’re overjoyed about the way the local running and fitness community
has supported the event. Thousands of Branford residents come out
each year to cheer on the participants. Thirty years ago we never could
have imagined this level of support,” said race director Ray Figlewski.
Starting on the Branford Green, the 2-mile Fitness Walk kicks off the
day’s festivities at 10:05 a.m. The 5-mile race starts 10 minutes later,
and the 1-mile Fun Run follows after the last 5-mile runner finishes, at
about 11:30 a.m.
This year’s 5-mile race once again serves as a State Championship.
Many of Connecticut’s top runners are expected to participate. Julie
Francis, Branford Road Race committee member and owner of Sound
Runner says, “We are dedicated to bringing Connecticut’s best athletes
to Branford and making the Branford Road Race one of the best in
the country.” Runners can enjoy musical entertainment along the race
course at seven locations.
The race has also supported the Branford Rotary and the Italian
American Club by purchasing food for more than 20,000 race
participants over the years. This year’s event supports scholarship funds
in honor of two local students (Branford’s Sandra Ciccone and North
Branford’s Nicole DeFilippo), as well as the James Blackstone Memorial
Library, The Harkness House, The American Heart Association, and the
Branford Community Dining Room. The Sandra Ciccone Scholarship is
given to a Branford High School Senior who demonstrates academic
12 • Branford Festival 2011
achievement. Sandra, a frequent race participant, passed away eight
years ago at age 22. The Nicole DeFilippo Scholarship Fund has been
established to provide financial support to a graduating senior who is
entering the special education field. Nicole, also a past event participant,
passed suddenly on November 15, 2006 from Viral Myocarditis.
Participants can contribute to the James Blackstone Memorial Library
as well. The library provides information, resources, and programs for
residents on the Connecticut shoreline. The race supports the Harkness
House, whose purpose is to provide transitional housing for veterans.
The American Heart Association is accepting donations in honor of
Lisa Pelosi, a friend and employee of Planet Fitness who died last year.
In addition, we support Branford’s Community Dining Room which is
committed to serving the community by feeding the hungry.
Participants who raise $100 or more for any of these six charities will
be given an entry to the Branford Road Race free of charge.
The Branford Festival weekend offers much in the way of food, fun,
and entertainment. Saturday features juried crafters, a business expo,
and fun for all ages throughout the day. The race kicks off the final day
of the Branford Festival, a community celebration that attracts tens of
thousands of people. All 5-mile race participants receive T-shirts, food,
and many other race amenities.
The 2011 race’s major sponsors are H.D. Segur Insurance, Stratton
Faxon Law Offices, Chapin & Havlicek Physical Therapy, Pasta Cosi,
Planet Fitness, RE/MAX Alliance, Sound Runner, Lynn’s Restaurant,
Delicatessen & Caters, The Sound, and 99.1PLR.
For information about the race, visit branfordroadrace.net or call
203-481-5933. Register or pick up a race packet at Sound Runner,
1088 Main Street, Branford, on Friday, June 17 or Saturday, June 18.

Festival Music: Christine Ohlman Friday, June 17 at 8:45 p.m.
Known as “The Beehive Queen” for her outrageous, mile-high hairdo, Christine Ohlman is
the current, longtime vocalist of the Saturday Night Live band. The queen of blue-eyed rock ‘n’
soul, Christine grew up loving equally the sweetness of a Memphis horn line and the raunch of
an electric guitar riff. She teased her blonde hair into a beehive in honor of Ronnie Spector and
never looked back, picking up a guitar and forging her career as a songwriter in the process.
Christine sang at SNL’s 25th Anniversary telecast; Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary bash with
George Harrison, Chrissie Hynde, and others; the 2009 Obama Inaugural Gala in Washington,
D.C.; The Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series with Sting and Lou Reed; and the
Central Park Summerstage Tribute To Janis Joplin, fronting both Big Brother & The Holding
Company and the Kozmic Blues Band.
Christine appears on the Grammy nominated A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf with Taj Mahal and
Lucinda Williams and on Charlie Musselwhite’s One Night In America with Marty Stuart; sings
the theme song for NBC’s 30 Rock; worked on a musical with the late Cy Coleman (who
compared her sense of timing to Peggy Lee’s); performs duets live whenever possible with
the aforementioned Miss Spector, as well as with blues legends Eddie Kirkland and Hubert
Sumlin; collaborated on critically-acclaimed tracks with Marshall Crenshaw (Labour Of Love:
The Music of Nick Lowe), Big Al Anderson (Pawn Shop Guitars), and Ian Hunter (Shrunken

Consider everything
you own.
You have a home, and it’s more than a
house to you and your family. You live
there. It may be your greatest investment
and largest asset. You want to protect
it and everything it contains. Is your
Homeowner’s policy all that it should
be? We insure homes all along the shore
from Milford to Stonington...and inland
to Danbury and beyond Hartford.
If you own your own business, you need
a lot more than basic coverage. Businesses
demand proper plans for liability, business
interruption, and employees. We work
with a wide range of commercial clients.
You own an automobile. Many
own more than one car. You should
have proper comprehensive, collision,
and liability. Are your wheels
well-protected?

Festival Music: Satisfaction Saturday, June 18 at 8:45 p.m.
Satisfaction is an international touring tribute show dedicated to
the “World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band,” the Rolling Stones.
With more than 1,500 performance dates under its belt, the
show has been touring together since 2001. As the world’s only
full time touring show of its kind, this acclaimed production thrills
audiences with a colorful performance that gives life to more
than 45 years of classic hits. Featured in dozens of national
publications and television ads as the greatest show ever to
honor the Rolling Stones and the band’s legacy, the show is a
must see.
In 2005, Satisfaction became the first-ever Rolling Stones show
on the Las Vegas strip as it debuted as part of the award winning
show “Legends in Concert” to outstanding reviews. The Las Vegas
Sun wrote “they shined just like the real Stones on the strip” and
Showbiz Magazine said “they’ll have you in the aisles just like
Jumping Jack Flash.”
In 2006, the show became a major draw on the popular
performing arts center and theater circuit, with several sold out
performances. The fall of 2007 saw the group featured on a
CBS News New York special on the ever popular rise of tribute
shows. CBS News advised audiences to “Go get Satisfaction.”
In 2008, Satisfaction was contacted by Paramount Pictures
and the IMAX Corporation to assist in the promotion of the
Martin Scorsese-produced documentary film “Shine a Light,”
highlighting the Rolling Stones’ performance in New York City
with vintage clips from the past. In 2010, the show received its
highest accolades ever when it was approved by the Rolling
Stones to perform a long-term engagement annually at Walt
Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Satisfaction also embarked on
the world’s first-ever Rolling Stones fan cruise from New York
City to Bermuda in July, 2010.
Rolling Stones tribute act Satisfaction
performs on Saturday on the Main Stage.
What People Are Saying:
Las Vegas Sun: Shined just like the real Stones on the strip.
CBS News New York: A must see...go get Satisfaction.
New York Examiner: The best show of its kind...ever!
The Washington Post: A spot on portrayal to the Rolling Stones.
Showbiz Magazine: They have you in the aisles like Jumping Jack Flash.
