NEWS FROM AROUND THE GREENS
The mighty Helensvale Hawks nest is now home to one of our newest
Australian Champions with KEN READ taking out the Naonal Deaf Singles Title
at the Australian Deaf Championships which were held at Mareeba Memorial
Bowls Club in North Queensland from the 1st—7th June. Ken was in such
impressive form that he also finished in second place in the pairs event and
third place in the triples. At the compleon of the championships a side was
selected to represent Australia at the World Deaf Bowls Championships in
2015 - and our KEN was selected. Ken will now head to Belfast, Northern
Ireland late next year to play in the green and gold. Congratulaons on your
outstanding achievements Ken, we are all very proud of you!
Some more interstate success was enjoyed during June with Jim Merrick and
Cheryl Hutchinson compeng in the NSW Bowlers Arm Singles Tournament
which was held at Beresfield and East Maitland Bowls Clubs in NSW on the
16th and 17th June. Both Jim and Cheryl successfully won their way through
the first days play to earn a place in the Gold Secon of the Championship
playoffs where Jim Merrick was crowned Gold Secon Champion defeang
Mick Kedwell from Taralba who finished with a silver, and Jeff Huntley from
Cardiff who took out the bronze. Jim said this event was a fantasc concept,
thoroughly enjoyed by all those that competed. Jim was approached by Bowls
Australia President and Bowls Queensland and asked if he would like to be in
charge of organising a Queensland Bowlers Arm Championship, in a bid to
further develop the concept across the country. Jim has agreed to mastermind
the operaon and I am sure he will do a great job in ensuring Queensland
Bowlers with a bowling arm get the same opportunity to compete in such a
great event.
Several more of our Club Championships came to a close last month. We
crowned our Men’s Open and B Grade Singles Champions with Anthony Fanni
defeang Anthony Kiepe in the Open, and Steve Pearson defeang David
Co>ell in the B Grade. While the Senior Fours tle went to Brian Crook, Laurie
Pickering, Ron Lewis and Ray Perkins who defeated Geoff O’Meagher, Peter
Smith, Ron Boydell and Jim Merrick in their final. Some fantasc bowls were
played during these matches so a big congratulaons to all involved
(Champions photos will be published in the next edion of our newsle>er).
And in one of our most excing championships for the year, our Mens B Grade
Pairs final came right down to the wire with Ron Wallace and Paul Wilson
taking out the tle aBer picking up 4 shots on the last end to win by just 1 shot
over Richard Delaney and Richard Huff! What a tremendous effort from both
teams, well done!
The Men’s Novice Singles is currently underway with Neil Donaldson the first
man through to the final. Neil will play the winner of J Phillips and J Phillips
(John Phillips or Jamie Phillips/Snake). The next event on the men’s
championship calendar is the men’s open triples which will commence on
Sunday 13th July.
In the ladies, our B Grade Singles championship is down to the finals stage with
April Wilson and Judy Gille>e the two women leB in the race for the 2014 tle.
This final will be played on Thursday 3rd July at 9am, good luck to both
players—I’m sure it will be a fantasc match. The final ladies championship of
the year will be the Consistency Singles event which will start on the 10th July.
Always a fantasc field, may the best draw bowler win!
The Gold Coast Champion of Champions events have all been completed
except for the ladies pairs which will be on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th July. Our
men’s fours team of Anthony Fanni, Anthony Kiepe, Bre> Wilkie and Nathan
Rice were beaten by 1 shot in the semi final by a team from Mermaid Beach.
Our men’s pairs combinaon of Wilkie and Mark Casey lost out in the final to
Tweed Heads by just 4 shots. While Fanni was unlucky to bow out in the first
round of the singles discipline, going down to Coolanga>a
25-24. In the women’s fours event Shahn Griffiths, Teresa
Armitage, Pam Rowe and Lynsey Clarke were defeated by
3 shots in their final by a strong Broadbeach team;
however Lynsey Clarke was able to win the ladies singles
tle defeang Mudgeeraba in the final 25-14. The zone
playoff for this match will be held in September at a Gold
Coast club to be advised. Thanks to all our mighty Club
Helensvale Supporters who were able to cheer on our
representaves at this years finals.

The Gold Coast District Ladies Senior Fours Championship was held at
Mudgeeraba Bowls Club on Monday 16th June with two Club Helensvale teams
taking part. Pat Allsopp’s side did well winning both matches, however our
mighty team of Jean Rae, Audrey Wheeler, Carmel Gibb and Terry Heath
played extremely well to finish with the runner up tle at this event.
Our annual Ladies Invitaonal Pairs event, sponsored by LJ Hooker Pacific Pines
and agent Brad Clarke, was held on Sunday 22nd and Monday 23rd June and was
a fantasc success. The elite field of internaonal, naonal and district
representaves thoroughly enjoyed the tough compeon, our fantasc
greens and the wonderful hospitality of our club and our staff. Winners on the
day were Australian representaves Lynsey Clarke and Karen Murphy; in
second place was Helen Wood-Bradley and Eryn Finnigan who is a state Over
65 rep; third was won by Val Jackson and Australian Champion Chris Pavlov;
fourth place went to Queensland representave twins Cass and Bolivia

In closing, on behalf of Bre>, Nathan and myself, I just like to express the most

COACHES CORNER
Communica
ng from the Head
Skips should acquaint their teams with their taccal thinking. Brief
opportunies to communicate among team members occur when changing
ends.
Team members can exchange views out of earshot of opponents.
Skips should:
•
Avoid unse>ling their teams with unexpected changes of ends length
•
Use verbal head direcons effecvely when condions are favourable.
Environmental noise or players hearing impairment can effect verbal direcng.
•
When taccal circumstances are complex or if the required shot has a
fine margin for error, they should invite players to the head for a
personal inspecon.
A simple direcon such as “Beat your last Bowl” is oBen all that a player
requires.
•
Avoid vague direcons such as “Be Up”, “Put one behind” or “Come
through the head”.
When they require a bowl in the same posion the same distance from the
mat as another bowl at rest, they should draw a>enon to the la>er as a guide
for appropriate delivery speed.
•
They should avoid negave instrucons such as “Don’t hit that bowl in
the approach”, otherwise they make bowlers more aware of the risks
of a shot than of its more important taccal objecves.
Alternavely, skips can use visual signals in direcng a head, parcularly if
circumstances are un-favourable for verbal direcons. They should not leave
their leads guessing where to place the mat and roll the jack to.
•
They can use fingers on one or both hands to beckon (bring the mat
forward), to push (take the mat further back) or to pat downwards
(place the mat where you are).
•
They can plant a foot or hold a white cloth to indicate where they want
a jack or bowl to come to rest.
•
They can similarly indicate the required point of impact for an
a>acking shot.
•
They should use an outstretched arm to indicate the required hand to
play.
•
Both skips and directors should accurately communicate the results of
shots. If a skip reports a delivery that is a metre short as being two
metres short the correcve a>empt is likely to be a metre long.
•
Skips should indicate distances in front of or behind the jack, which are
hard to gauge from the mat with one foot in a jack high posion.
By converng distances along the rink to distances across the rink skips should
give players on the mat a clear guide to the result of shots.
•
Skips should incorporate movaonal messages in their verbal and
non-verbal communicaon.
•
They should acknowledge careful a>empts at playing as directed,
parcularly when those a>empts produce favourable results they
should avoid any temptaon to offer undeserved praise.
A draw to the jack that finishes over two metres past the jack, is probably
undeserving of praise as a “handy back bowl”, for example.
Most experienced skips and players would be aware of these
communicaon skills, however for those unfamiliar to the
role of skip, some of the skills menoned should assist.
