In spite of the clearly positive economic assessment, the transport and logistics sector continues to face great challenges. We have not achieved all the goals we set in the Group. Nevertheless, there is reason enough to look ahead at the second half of the financial year with optimism and confidence. In recent months we in the IMPERIAL Logistics International Group have grown together into an even more competent and thus efficient unit group-wide that is equal to any challenge. Each and every one of you contributes his or her very personal share to this positive development and for these efforts I would like to thank you. The forecasts of economic experts assume economic growth of 1.5 to 2.0 percent for the current year. However, this presumed stability should not induce us to pursue less ambitious goals in future. We as the IMPERIAL Logistics International Group want to continuously expand our market position and keep a watchful eye on disruptive and destabilising factors that exist even in these good times. We all know that current trends have become more short-lived and, on top of that, our customers are getting more and more demanding. In addition, further increasing energy costs, the greater degree of regulation, liberalisation of the market and increased safety and environmental protection requirements make the conditional framework in our sector difficult. We have to continue to respond to this situation responsibly and with good solutions – promptly, flexibly and applying a modern approach. LEHNKERING’s Road Logistics Division has extended its range of services and now also transports liquefied gas. LEHNKERING Gas Logistics AB is a newly established company that will initially take over LPG distribution for a well-known international energy supplier in southern Sweden. It has launched operation of its own fleet of special vehicles for this order, which runs for several years. Kopernikus complete train means further growth for neska Page 4 The PANOPA Group has achieved another milestone in its development in Eastern Europe through its new Logistics Optimisation Centre in Győr, Hungary. PANOPA Logistik Magyar Kft. now carries out extensive transport and logistics activities at this location. They include management of a warehouse measuring more than 75,000 square metres as well as all order picking operations, handling empties and shuttle transport for the automaker. LEHNKERING enlarges capacities at the Schönebeck location Page 11 We are thus headed in the right direction. The 2013/2014 financial year reveals numerous interesting prospects. Thanks to our stable business model, the outstanding commitment of our employees and cooperation between our management and customers based on trust, I am very confident that this year, too, we will take another big step forward. At this juncture I would once again like to warmly thank all of you and, of course, our customers in particular for the good cooperation last year. Nonetheless, the logistics sector, currently with sales of 930 billion euros, remains a major economic factor in Europe. This is one reason more for us not only to boost the internationalisation of the IMPERIAL Logistics International Group outside Europe, but also to maintain special focus on the development of our core market, Europe, where we currently do 95 percent of our business. BUSINESS AND PROJECT DEVELOPMENT Gerhard Riemann Three years ago we started to continuously extend our presence as a global service provider outside Europe to other continents, such as in China, by opening our office in Shanghai. At the moment we are broadening our activities in the Mercosur region through the new company IMPERIAL Shipping Paraguay S.A. In this context two push boats and twelve pushed barges belonging to the IMPERIAL Shipping Group were upgraded recently and brought from Rotterdam to South America. There they will move diverse raw materials between ports in Brazil and Argentina. There is a substantial need for development in the region due to a lack of infrastructure for transporting such raw materials as soy, cotton and grain. Fifty highly motivated employees were hired on site for the IMPERIAL Shipping Group. We are confident that the activities can be expanded from there. The mathematician and astronomer based his entirely new view of the world on his conclusions from observing the sky. Just as the person to whom it owes its name developed his own ideas, the rail shuttle “Kopernikus” will set new trends in intermodal transport. Ready for the train christening (from left): Frank Schuhholz, Managing Director of ERS Railways B.V., Holger Kemp, Managing Director of KCT Krefelder Container Terminal GmbH, May-Britt Schrader, Anke Engler and Bodo Engler, managing partner of dls Land und See Speditionsgesellschaft mbH. ince recently the complete train has linked Krefeld to Warsaw. The route is currently served on a round trip basis twice a week. The 635 metre long trains are in operation for around 23 hours. For each direction and departure S dls Land und See Speditionsgesellschaft mbH transports 36 trailers and containers on 18 double pocket wagons by means of “Kopernikus”. Up to 144 truck shipments a week are shifted from road to rail in this way. The key to the rail shuttle in Germany is the Krefelder Container Terminal (KCT), which belongs to the neska intermodal network. The loading units are entrained there using reach stackers or cranes. The freight going to Poland primarily consists of paper, chemical products and confectionery. Mainly furniture, paper and building materials are transported in the opposite direction. KCT Managing Director Holger Kemp is pleased about the cooperation with dls: “Since launching operation of the terminal in October 2008, we have been recording constant growth. With 15,000 additional shipment operations ‘Kopernikus’ will generate further growth in our order volume.” In future the plus amount will presumably be even higher since the number of round trips between Krefeld and Warsaw will increase as of April. A freight train linking the Krefelder Container Terminal to Mortara near Milan five times a week provides for an added boost in capacity utilisation. IMPERIAL NEWS >> The IMPERIAL Shipping Group continues to pursue its internationalisation course and has established a new company for this purpose, IMPERIAL Shipping Paraguay S.A. The activities of the leading European inland waterway shipping company are to be expanded in South America from Paraguay’s capital Asunción. Since January the two push boats Herkules III and Herkules IV have been in operation with twelve barges each on a route measuring 2,500 river kilometres. They transport various raw materials from Brazil to Argentina via the Hidrovía Paraná river system. The two pushed convoys were specially modi- >> LEHNKERING’s Road Logistics Division has launched transport of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). A new company was established specifically for this purpose, i.e. LEHNKERING Gas Logistics AB, which initially handles distribution of liquefied gas with special vehicles in southern Sweden for a well-known international energy supplier. rganisationally LEHNKERING Gas Logistics AB is affiliated with FoodTankers AB, which also belongs to the Road Logistics Division. “Since FoodTankers is specialised in transporting food products, however, we wanted a clear separation of the two segments,” explains Tomas Petterson, Managing Director of FoodTankers and LEHNKERING Gas Logistics. This is why a separate company was created for the gas sector, he adds. Liquefied petroleum gas represents a new business segment in the LEHNKERING portfolio that broadens the company’s base in the market. At the same time customers profit from the O expertise in the Road Logistics Division. Liquefied gas is predominantly obtained from the production of natural gas and crude oil. To carry out the project, IMPERIAL Shipping Individual coverage for employees >> Regent Insurance Brokers (Europe) has recently founded a New location in Hamburg To strengthen activities in the chemical and petrochemical industry in northern Germany, LEHNKERING Chemical Transport GmbH (LCT), another company in the Road Logistics Division, opened a new location in Hamburg. In line with customer demand, equipment will be stationed there on a permanent basis. “In this way we shorten transport routes and times. This more economical and ecological method of transportation not only holds advantages for our customers in the chemical and mineral oil industry, but also protects the environment,” says Hans-Ulrich Höfler, LCT Customer Care Manager responsible for the region of northern Germany. With Hamburg LCT now has a network of twelve locations in Europe. 5 Business boosted in South America Business and Project Development Transport of liquefied gas launched Business and Project Development 01/2014 subsidiary, Procur Assekuranzmakler GmbH, to expand its expertise in providing advice in regard to retirement plans and personal insurance. his insurance agency, located in Bochum, Germany, has been on the market for just four months but is already serving four thousand employees outside IMPERIAL Logistics International Group,” “T Encouraging employees to provide for their own future: Wolfgang Kortus, Senior Director Human Resource Management and Labour Law at IMPERIAL Logistics International B.V. & Co. Three questions to… Udo Griewatz, Managing Director of Regent Insurance Brokers (Europe) GmbH Why did you expand Regent’s field of business? In the past, employees of IMPERIAL Logistics International Group submitted to us many enquiries on the subject of private insurance. We are now placing this field in the hands of Ralph Kleinfeld and his team. Why was this subsidiary organised under a different name? This underscores the firm’s independence. Its clients, both inside and outside the Group, have an absolute right to the inviolability of their personal data. This is why Procur has separate premises and a separate computer system. Which additional activities are you planning? We are continuing to place our faith in individualised consulting. We also offer our clients added value, thanks to the advantages we enjoy when concluding policies with insurance carriers. 6 Business and Project Development IMPERIAL NEWS 01/2014 “This shareholding sets new standards in Nigeria” 49 percent share in MDS, one of the leading logistics providers in Nigeria, for around 26 million US dollars. Larry Ettah, CEO of UACN, also underlines the advantages of the shareholding: “We believe that this transaction is excellently suited to boosting the growth of MDS. The company’s outstanding local market expertise, combined with IMPERIAL Logistics’ international logistics know-how, will lead to increases in efficiency and set new standards in Nigeria for the benefit of all those involved.” IMPERIAL NEWS moreover, it has access to more than 60 vehicles belonging to joint venture partners. Although its services are restricted to Nigeria, MDS operates in a logistics market in which the growth potential is three times higher than in South Africa. At the same time the company is a leading pharmaceutical logistics specialist in Nigeria. “MDS complements our services in the pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare segment ideally,” says Dr. Iain Barton, Managing Director of IMPERIAL Health Sciences (IHS) in South Africa. IHS is the leading supply chain provider in these segments in Africa and specialises in multi-channel solutions for reliable provision of vital medication and distribution of healthcare products. In November 2013 the company belonging to the IMPERIAL Shipping Group added two motor vessels to its fleet: AMADEUS Gold and AMADEUS Silver. he 87.50 metre long and 11.30 metre wide ships, built in 2010, each have a hold measuring around 3,400 cubic metres, a loading capacity of 2,400 tons and a draught of 4.15 metres. According to Wolfgang Nowak, a member of the Amadeus Management Board, the primary reason for the purchase is that the demand on the part of shippers for in-house tonnage has increased constantly in the past year. Including the two new vessels, the fleet today comprises three in-house ships and four vessels chartered on a long-term basis with a loading capacity of between 2,000 and 3,000 tons. “With AMADEUS Gold and AMADEUS Silver we are well equipped for further strategic T business development,” emphasises Wolfgang Nowak. Logistics from a single source generates large order >> The neska Group and the IMPERIAL Shipping Group jointly landed a large order that runs for a period of several years. Both corporate groups carry out, in close coordination, storage, cargo handling and shipment of bottom ash for Mitteldeutsche Schlacken Union (MDSU). his ash comprises residues resulting from the incineration of household waste from which secondary raw materials, such as ferrous and nonferrous metals, as well as recyclable minerals are recovered. Around 400 tons of bottom ashes are produced daily at the EEW waste incineration facility in Hürth. The ash is taken by truck to the dry cargo handling facility that neska operates in Cologne. “We are the only logistics location there with approval for handling wastes,” emphasises Branch Manager Michael Wittmann. The bulk cargo is kept in temporary storage in a building measuring 1,250 square metres and equipped with a liquid-tight concrete surface before it is loaded onto canalgoing inland vessels of the IMPERIAL Shipping Group after a short time. The bottom ash is first T transported to Magdeburg, 550 kilometres away, via the Rhine, the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Mittelland Canal and then taken to Reesen by truck where it is subsequently treated in a new, highly innovative and patented process. “We employ our efficient fleet of privately owned ships as well as shipping company vessels for these strategically important volumes,” says Thomas Küpper, Managing Director of IMPERIAL Shipping Services GmbH. MDSU handles precarriage and onward carriage by truck through a company of the Neumann Group. The estimated cargo handling and transport volume comes to 100,000 to 120,000 tons a year. According to MDSU Managing Director André Hartl, the decisive factor for the contract awarded to neska and the IMPERIAL Shipping Group was the solution from a single source: “We attach importance to perfect interplay and a complete chain of logistics since a continuous supply of raw slag is of utmost importance for us in this innovative treatment process.” 8 Business and Project Development IMPERIAL NEWS 01/2014 IT capacities make for efficient document management >> No matter whether the staff is dealing with delivery notes, waybills or invoices – whenever documents IMPERIAL NEWS Business and Project Development 01/2014 PANOPA wins over major client >> Bochumer Verein Verkehrstechnik GmbH (BVV) enables trains to keep running all over the world. need to be stored and recovered, the Information Technology Department at headquarters supports all the companies in the IMPERIAL Logistics International Group. In 2013 alone 120,000 wheels for rail traffic rolled off the line at the manufacturer of rolling railway material. Since recently PANOPA Logistik GmbH has been responsible for organising shipments. “W ixteen PANOPA employees have their office at BVV’s headquarters in Bochum. There they coordinate worldwide transport via truck, aircraft and sea container. In addition, they take care of customs clearance for incoming and outgoing goods, procurement of packaging material, loading trucks and securing their cargo as well as proper stowage of sea containers. “Winning the tender was a huge success for us,” says Thorsten Domke, Head of Transport Organisation at PANOPA. “Thanks to our concept, which we developed jointly with colleagues at PANOPA Steel Logistics and documents each week,” says GILLHUBER Managing Director Srecko Mühling. To meet that need in the past, the staff had to search out and send the documents needed – and in some cases to even request them from the subcontractors. The digital document management system, “Docuware”, was tailored to suit the demands of the process. This makes it possible for GILLHUBER staff to organise the scanned papers so that they can readily be recovered later, with just a mouse click or two. The system, with the help of which 34,000 documents have been organised, has been in use for six months. Six thousand documents are added each month. By the end of the year all the associated companies will be integrated into the concept – and volume will rise to 60,000 documents per month. “Even now, our effective savings come to 60 hours a month, time we can use for other tasks,” Srecko Mühling sums up. Fleet expanded by 18 push barges >> De Grave-Antverpia N.V., an inland waterway shipping company belonging to the IMPERIAL Shipping Group, has taken over the barging assets of Compagnie Française de Navigation Rhénane. y acquiring 18 push barges belonging to the French competitor, De Grave-Antverpia is significantly expanding its fleet. This means the Belgian company can continue to handle the increasing volumes of its big industrial customers without any problem. Moreover, expansion of the fleet provides for synergy effects and cost savings in the company’s network. With headquarters in Antwerp and branches in Liège and Tournai De Grave-Antverpia has developed into one of the major inland waterway shipping companies in Belgium. It is specialised in transportation and storage of dry bulk cargo. It ships around twelve million tons a year on all European waterways. B S Old Logos New gas tankers launch service >> The sister ships IMPERIAL GAS 90 and IMPERIAL GAS 91 were recently put into service, thus boosting IMPERIAL Gas Barging’s fleet. he two modern tankers are able to transport the entire range of gaseous products. Currently they mainly carry propylene, but they are equally suited for transporting propylene oxide, ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The 110 metre long and 11.45 metre wide vessels each have a capacity of 2,760 cubic metres and are driven by 634-kilowatt engines. At present the gas tankers operate on the Rhine route, though they can also navigate canals. With the two new tankers IMPERIAL Gas Barging’s fleet currently consists of 17 ships. In December 2013 the gas transport activities of the former LEHNKERING Reederei GmbH were transferred to IMPERIAL Gas Barging, Hamburg, a branch of IMPERIAL Liquids Barging GmbH. T from Europe, the major sales regions include Asia, in particular the Chinese market. However, South Africa as well as Latin and North America are markets with great potential for BVV. Bochumer Verein Verkehrstechnik GmbH has been operating in the steel processing industry since 1842 and today it is part of the Rail Technology Division of the Georgsmarienhütte Group. He and his colleagues now make sure that truck shipments and sea containers reach their destination safely. Apart Redesigned Logos Revitalisation of corporate logo >> IMPERIAL Holdings Limited has modified its logo. The most striking changes are the altered course and new position of the logomark “Möbius” strip. As a rule, it is no longer above, but next to the word mark “IMPERIAL” and more or less rounds it off. he red and blue colouring in the arch is more fluid than before. The font has remained the same. However, the letters are now somewhat closer together. To emphasise the affiliation to the parent company in South Africa, the Management Board of IMPERIAL Logistics International decided make adjustments as well. “To make sure the corporate design remains consistent and unmistakable both internally and externally, we have also meticulously revised our logo,” explains Esbade Herzog, Key Account Manager in the Marketing Department at IMPERIAL Logistics International. The changeover to the new corporate design will take place successively. T IMPERIAL NEWS 01/2014 “Hazardous materials warehouse is a strategic milestone” >> LEHNKERING is building a new hazardous materials warehouse in the district of Hedemünden in Hannoversch Münden. The chemical logistics specialist will perform storage, cargo handling and order picking services there for vehicle parts wholesaler Wessels + Müller starting in May. he facility is planned for a capacity of around 5,000 pallet slots with spaciously dimensioned cargo handling and preparation areas. The high-bay warehouse, 15 metres in height, will feature narrow aisle and reach truck technology. The safety equipment includes a modern fire alarm system, a sprinkler system with foam mixing facility and a gas warning and ventilation system. The building, which is divided into two fire zones, will be designed with leakage and fire-fighting water T retention capability. The site at which LEHNKERING is constructing the hazardous materials warehouse is linked to the A7 motorway. Thanks to the central location, delivery to neighbouring countries is possible overnight for orders placed by 6 pm. “The new hazardous materials warehouse is a strategic milestone in the ongoing development of our network of locations,” says Michael Pohl, member of the Divisional Management Board. Other customers can also take advantage of the capacity offered. AEO certificate for LEHNKERING Logistics N.V. Logistics concept for hazmat distribution >> Within just two months, LEHNKERING’s Distribution Logistics Division worked out and implemented a logistics concept for a wholesale company selling automotive industry supplies. EHNKERING organises the delivery of pre-packaged liquids of a hazardous nature to 15 logistics centres located throughout Germany. The customer, given the stringent legislation governing hazardous materials, had approached the limits of its own storage capacities. The solution uses the CargoWare warehouse management system. It is linked with the wholesaler’s SAP server via an IT interface. Thus the shipping orders arriving from that customer’s 15 logistics centres are routed to a central point at LEHNKERING and are then split up as appropriate among the five manufacturing sites operated by the chemical maker. “We have to respond and assemble orders extremely quickly, so that the goods are received the next day,” according to Björn Liedtke of LEHNKERING’s lead branch office for this project, in Mannheim. A further challenge is to accommodate daily and seasonal fluctuations. The wholesaler distributes the materials once again from its logistics centres to retail sales points. Calculated for the year, Björn Liedtke expects that 110,000 order lines and 450,000 picks are involved. And in 2014, that volume is forecast to rise by 30 percent. L >> LEHNKERING Logistics N.V. is a particularly trustworthy partner in international logistics business. The Belgian subsidiary of LEHNKERING GmbH now has proof of this in black and white. he company headquartered in Antwerp has a certificate as an Authorised Economic Operator, or AEO for short, specifically certificate type AEOC. It is considered to be a seal of quality for reliability and safety. Authorised Economic Operators make use of customs simplifications in the import and export of goods in the 28 EU Member States. Among other things, the goods go through fewer physical inspections. “Thanks to AEO certification, we can offer our customers even better service in all aspects related to importing and exporting their goods,” as Hans van den Bosch, Managing Director of LEHNKERING Logistics N.V., explains the advantages. “The simplifications in customs processes and preferential treatment accelerate customs clearance significantly.” That is why the certificate plays a very important role in the competitive market. Headquartered in Rotterdam, LEHNKERING Logistics B.V. is also AEO-certified. Both companies are part of the LEHNKERING’s Distribution Logistics Division.
