There has been increased participation throughout the East of the City in both Secondary and Primary Competitions. Over a week in November there was a huge take up in the Primary Sportshall Athletics at the Alan Higgs Centre with the finals in January. Wiseman and Grace Academy, these schools have excelled in other Level 2 events in Year 7 netball, badminton, basketball and rowing. Other schools in the Level 3 include Whitley Academy in girl’s football and Year 9 boys rowing and Ernesford Grange in the U14boys badminton. Willenhall Primary was successful for the 2nd year running. The Secondary age group winners were shared between Bluecoat, Cardinal Wiseman and Grace Academy. The atmosphere at this event was incredible with staff and pupils thoroughly enjoying it. There are over 50 pupils who have been on Leadership courses in basketball, football, badminton and netball. Ambassador training has achieved 25 Silver Ambassadors and over 20 Primary Schools taking part in Bronze Ambassador training. The level of commitment the Ambassadors and Leaders have shown in supporting Level 1 and 2 events is inspiring and it is a great credit to their schools that they release them as much as possible. The swimming galas were a great event with Wyken Croft being the Primary winners. The Secondary was again shared between Bluecoat, Cardinal It has been a busy time for the Secondary Schools; with leagues in Basketball and Rowing as well as competitions in Swimming, Sports Hall Athletics, Football and Badminton. We have been pleased to see the rowing becoming stronger growing to a league from a one off event last year! In many competitions it has been a matter of seconds/metres or points between the top places. Coventry West Competition has been keen to qualify for the Winter Games Finals. The badminton teams from Finham, Tile Hill Wood and Woodlands all qualified from competitions held at the Xcel Centre and Westwood Academy in December but unfortunately did not achieve success in the Games. The boys from Woodlands Academy just missing out, a bronze being the closest. The basketball level 2 competition saw year 10/11 Barrs Hill going through like last year with newcomers President Kennedy to join them in year 9. The girls’ footballers from Finham played their level 2 finals at the Astros at Woodlands Academy beating all challengers quite convincingly. The Sportshall athletics level 2 finals saw some excellent athletics with some new winners this year. Finham boys won year 7, wish all of our competitors the best of luck in quicksticks hockey, rounders, quadkids, rowing and tri golf! Eastern Warwickshire The Eastern Warwickshire area started the year with some exciting competitions which are continuing into the summer term supported by some excellent young leaders. Participation has increased this year with the most popular primary competition continuing to be the year 5 & 6 Sportshall Athletics competition. Paddox Primary School continues to dominate in this event, successfully qualifying again for the level 3 competition. Paddox Primary School have entered most school games events and have also qualified to represent their area in Tag Rugby and High 5 Netball. Northlands Primary School won the level 2 Year 3 & 4 Mini Red Tennis with a clear lead and Bilton Junior School beat a strong team from Wolston St Margarets Primary School thereby securing their place in the level 3 Year 5 & 6 Mini Red Tennis competition. Our KS1 Multiskills competitions are taking place over the next few weeks with 360 year 1 and 2 pupils taking part. We look forward to the remaining primary competitions and The secondary competitions have been equally well attended also with some closely fought competitions. The winner of the rounders league had to be identified by score difference – well done Avon Valley School! The swimming gala was a great competition with Lawrence Sheriff School winning all but one of the boys competitions and Ashlawn School winning all of the girls events. We now look forward to the last level 2 secondary competition – Super 6 Athletics and wish congratulations to all of our secondary winners so far: Swimming: Ashlawn School and Lawrence Sheriff School Bishop Ullathorne year 8 boys, Coundon Court year 8 girls and Barrs Hill year 7 girls. South Solihull showed their strength in the Level 3 Badminton finals, finalists in all four competitions and winning three of them!! Congratulations to Langley and Arden representing the SSP!! Our Primary Competitions have kicked off in February with Langley Primary winning the indoor Sports hall Finals with an incredible 18 schools taking part. The culmination of the netball season is nearly upon us, with 4 leagues and 3 tournaments and 23 schools playing it will be exciting to see who will go through to the Level 3 event shortly. Secondary Competition Winners so far: Swimming Finalists: Saint Martins, Arden, St Peters, Alderbrook Basketball: Arden Indoor Rowing: Langley, Heart of England, Lyndon Badminton: Langley, Arden Sports Hall Athletics: Heart of England, Arden Girls Football: Heart of England North Solihull Numerous pupils in Solihull North have had the opportunity to engage in level 1 and level 2 sporting competitions striving to participate in the Winter and Summer School Games finals. Students ranging from Year 2 (aged 6/7) to Year 11 (aged 15/16) have represented their schools taking part in Basketball, Badminton, Indoor Athletics, Girls Football, Multi Skills, Indoor Rowing and Table Tennis. Pupils from Special Needs settings have also had the opportunity to participate in Boccia, Archery, Indoor Rowing, and Football. Multi Skills was an inaugural event for Solihull North this academic year where over 280 students took part in a All in all great representation across the area with nine out of the 10 schools represented. series of skill based challenges relating to athletics held at our central venue, Smiths Wood Sports College. Following our success in Indoor Rowing last academic year, every school within the SGO area has been given the opportunity to participate in rowing workshops which have determined the respective level 2 winners for School Games selection. Pictured above are the Grace Academy Year 10 boys rowing team who having last year gained a silver medal at the School Games finals are hoping to go one better this year after winning the level 2 competition for the second year in succession. Northern Warwickshire Central Warwickshire With the national focus at level one competition, the Northern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership has been using their core offer to enhance School Games. Secondary Schools that have ‘Signed Up for Sport’ and hosted a Level 2 Sportshall Athletics event have been able to access intra school competition support for their Year 7 and 8 pupils. After an amazing summer of sport, the students in Central Warwickshire really do seem to have been inspired to participate and compete in more sport. The number of both primary and secondary schools entered in all our School Games competitions has double and in some sports trebled. With this growth in participation the Sports Partnership has had to support a similar growth in the number of young leaders and volunteers who make running competitions possible. The ideal scenario has seen a whole day of Sportshall Athletics for all ages, incorporating the delivery of Level 1 competitions for Year 7 & 8 pupils first thing, leadership training for Years 9-13 students after break, Level 2 competition for local feeder schools in the afternoon and a Level 2 secondary event taking place after school. One School Games focus day like this can engage up to 500 young people over the course of the day as participants and volunteers. Aside from Sportshall Athletics, the other focus winter sports have seen Level 2 competitions taking place at primary level as play off events between the three separate primary school associations, as well as several new developmental competitions including indoor rowing for Year 5&6 pupils. The secondary swimming gala was held for the third year now and is slowly developing in terms of participation rates. Level 2 girls football was well supported once again by staff from Nuneaton and Bedworth Leisure Trust and is popular due to the central venue formal in place. Sportshall Athletics: Ashlawn School, Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby High School Basketball: Ashlawn School, Lawrence Sheriff School Football: Avon Valley School Trampolining: Avon Valley School, Harris School, Princethorpe College Netball: Rugby High School Rowing: Bilton School, Harris School, Lawrence Sheriff School Table Tennis: Lawrence Sheriff School www.cswsport.org.uk/schoolgames Southern Warwickshire It has been another busy school year so far with lots of competitions taking place for primary, secondary and special schools within Southern Warwickshire. With the introduction of the Winter Games level 3 event, the last few weeks have seen secondary teams qualify for finals of badminton, basketball, sportshall athletics, indoor rowing, swimming and girls football. The secondary swimming gala was a new competition this year and will hopefully develop over the next few years with all schools being involved. Congratulations to Alcester Grammar School who have 9 teams qualified for level 3 finals, Stratford Girls Grammar (4 teams), Shipston (2 teams), Stratford-upon-Avon School (1 team) and King Edward VI (1 team). Primary schools have also seen a lot of competition with the main school games event being sportshall athletics. The two tiered system of separate competitions for small schools and large schools has again been very successful and has enabled very close competitions. St. Gregory’s from Stratford won the large schools event, beating Tanworth-in-Arden for the title. The small schools final was one of the closet competitions for years, with Ettington emerging as winners only just beating Alveston into second place. One of the most successful competitions has been our year 5/6 indoor rowing event. Last year we did not have any schools enter this event, so to support schools to engage we ran a practice competition and optional after school sessions for schools to access. Good luck to all teams competing in both the winter and summer level 3 events! www.yourschoolgames.com After this we had 12 teams enter the competition. The atmosphere in the gym was electric as parents, teachers and children cheered their teams on. Alongside partnership staff, a team of young leaders from Campion School helped run the event. The schools going through to the County School Games Finals are Milverton and Telford Juniors. This year has seen some great sports competitions in schools and there is still plenty more to come. Is your school involved? Is your child involved? It is not too late to be part of these exciting sporting opportunities.
