Free Fall
Baltimore
In 1904 the city of Baltimore was
almost destroyed by fire. Hundreds
of firemen, policemen, soldiers, and
citizens battled the blaze for three
days. One hero stood head and
shoulders (literally) above the rest, and his name was Goliath,
a fire horse assigned to Engine Company 15.
Claudia Fridell, author of the children’s book, Goliath: Hero
of the Great Baltimore Fire, will be on-site to sign copies of
the book. Children can also see an antique fire truck and real
horseshoes!
Since March 2010, local Kohl’s stores have
partnered with Port Discovery Children’s
Museum to send Kohl’s associates to the
Museum to volunteer with guests!
Kohl’s associates and Museum guests
love the family activities that Kohl’s volunteers facilitate.
Some of the activities facilitated by Kohl’s volunteers
include: Make Your Own Teddy Bear Ears for the annual
Teddy Bear Picnic; Make a Coin Mobile for the annual
Financial Literacy Fair; Chinese Lion Dance Masks and
Shrinky Dinks for Chinese New Year Celebration, and many
more!
Kohl’s Associates in Action program works with youthserving non-profit organizations and environmental initiatives
that benefit youth-serving organizations in the communities.
From the United Way to local parks to children’s hospitals,
Associates are lending a hand and demonstrating our
commitment to helping kids in the communities we serve.
Port Discovery Children’s Museum thanks Kohl’s for its
volunteer time and support! If you want to learn more about
Kohl’s Associate in Action program, please visit:

Mi Tierra for a special performance of traditional Hispanic
dances. Families can even learn a few dance steps of their
own! Performance times are 1 pm and 2 pm.

The goals of People Are Alike, People Are Different are:
• To teach children to correctly define the word “disability”
• To allay myths and fears about people with disabilities through discussions and hands-on experiences
• To encourage children to examine the similarities and differences that everyone has– no two people are alike.
• To provide hands-on, sensory experiences for able-bodied children and children with disabilities to experience:
using a wheelchair for mobility, using other senses when one sense is impaired.
The program is divided into 3 sessions that can be
completed on-site. Once a participant completes all
sessions, she will receive her patch.
Overnight Adventures also includes:
• People Just Like You patch (upon completion
of session)
