Page 2 MAKING OUR WAY TOWARD $175K In early 2006, during Lahainaluna’s historic 175th year, a challenge seemed logical, TO RAISE $175,000 for the 175th. Lahainaluna alumni from across the nation, young and old, joined with the West Maui community, businesses, foundations, etc. to support our school, its goals, and its vision. As soon as the year is done, the Financial Statement of the LHS Foundation will be posted on the website. HOPEFULLY, WE WILL HAVE DONE IT!!! What an amazing and incredible group of people love and support Lahainaluna High School, what it was, what it is, and what it will become. This year, with volunteer support from Tennis, Band, Baseball, Basketball, HOSA (Health Occupations Services Assn.), FFA (Future Farmers of America), Boarders, Cheerleaders and alumni, we will again be beneficiaries of this prestigious event. PLEASE COME & SUPPORT IT! Andrew Kutsunai: Scholarships Last school year, the LHSF distributed $14,450 in scholarships to 14 students and one teacher at Lahainaluna High School. The Scholarship Committee consists of four members from the community and the senior class counselor at Lahainaluna. The committee members are: Penny Wakida, Lydia Saribay, Tonata Lolesio, Andrew Kutsunai and Eric Balinbin. All student applicants submit a common application form for all LHS Foundation administered scholarships and are selected through a process based on a point system which takes into consideration future potential and a desire to continue their education beyond high school. Applications will be available in the counselors office at the end of January, and will also be available on the web- Mahalo for your support in 2006 Basil Tomatoes Italian Grill BJ’s Chicago Pizzeria Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Buzz’s Wharf Cilantro Gerard’s Restaurant Hula Grill I’o Restaurant Ka’anapali Beach Hotel Kimo’s Restaurant Kobe Japanese Steak House Lahaina Fish Company Lahaina Shores Beach Resort Mala Ocean Tavern Maui Tacos Maui Arts & Cultural Center Maui Time Weekly Moose McGillicuddy’s Old Lahaina Luau Pizza Paradiso Precision Cutting Services Resort Quest Ron Kawahara & Co. This year, the Board of Directors of the LHS Foundation has approved $5,000 for scholarships in addition to already endowed scholarships. This will bring the total amount of scholarships to be dispersed in 2007 to nearly $20,000. Also this year, for the first time, we have an alumnus from the Class of ‘ 52 who will fund, through an annuity, an annual $2,000 toward scholarships. Another alumnus, also from the class of ’ 52, has funded the teacher ’ s scholarship for the past three years. Donations of any size earmarked for scholarships, from individuals, classes, businesses and community organizations enable Lahainaluna students and teachers to further their education. It is a very real way to make a difference. Friends of the Library Endowment Program The Friends of the Library Endowment Program, with inspiration from Charlie Fox, began with one book endowed in 2002 by Harlow Wright. It continues to GROW. It now has 73 endowed books, an Endowment Fund of over $37,000 and the number books and educational materials added to the library increases annually. Each book has a bookplate with donor and honoree noted. A record is kept in the library in a special place. This is a wonderful way to honor and remember those who have meant so much to us. Our goal is to reach 100 endowed books before the end of 2007. A display/map of the Lahainaluna High School campus, including current and historic sites, was installed in April 2006 in front of the Administration building for the Lahainaluna High School 175th Celebration, and funded by the LHS Foundation.
