Over-the-Counter Savings Bond Sales to End Effective December 26, 2011 The Bureau of the Public Debt has decided to end the sale of paper savings bonds at financial institutions. UW Credit Union will no longer be selling savings bonds as of December 26, 2011. This decision supports the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s goal to increase the number of transactions consumers are able to do electronically, which will save taxpayers approximately $70 million over the first five years. Savings bonds, however, are not going away. Electronic savings bonds in Series EE and I will be available through TreasuryDirect®, a secure, web-based system at treasurydirect.gov. UW Credit Union will still be able to redeem bonds. Find out how much your bond is worth at treasurydirect.gov/BC/SBCPrice. Save Money On Everyday Items Knowing Where to Shop Makes a Difference It’s always good to save money on items you buy frequently. Use these tips to help you shop more efficiently. Take Advantage of Market Highs & Lows Dollar-Cost Averaging What to Buy at Dollar Stores – The best deals at dollar stores are most commonly associated with household cleaning. This includes items such as dish detergent, sponges, paper products and brushes. Other bargains include holiday decorations and candy, crafting supplies, baby clothes and non-perishable foods. What to Buy at Warehouse Clubs – Some of the best bargains at warehouse clubs can be found in the supermarket section. Alcohol is typically 35% lower in price than at supermarkets, while basics such as milk, butter and eggs are 20% less expensive. Cooking oils are also a good deal. Electronics can also be a good buy, and warehouse stores often offer more generous return policies and longer warranties than electronic stores. Other deals can often be found on eyeglasses and prescriptions. What to Buy at Large Retailers – Deals can be found on brand-name groceries and snacks, as well as store-brand items. Purchasing store-brand items can save up to 10-20%. Try store-brands out to see if you like them as much as their brand-name counterparts. Cosmetics and small electronics can also be good buys. What to Buy at Outlet Malls – You can get good discounts at outlet malls on items like clothes and shoes, especially on popular brands. However, compare the price to what you’d pay at a regular retail store to make sure you are getting the best deal. Outlet malls typically contain last season’s merchandise and overstocks, but there are items manufactured exclusively for them. Protect Yourself from Smishing Customers of financial institutions are likely targets for smishing scams. Smishing attempts to obtain your account or personal information by sending you a fraudulent text message on your cell phone. Often, the text gives you an urgent matter you need to attend to, like the suspension of your account. You are given a toll-free number to call, where you provide account information and passwords to a fake automated response system. Afterwards, scammers typically use your information to create fake credit and debit cards for themselves, often in as little as thirty minutes. UW Credit Union will never send you an unsolicited text message or email asking you to confirm your account information. The best way to protect yourself from financial fraud is to never give out your account information including ATM and credit card PINs and online banking passwords. If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of a communication, or if you have given out your account information, please contact us at 800.533.6773. With the recent volatility of the stock market, it may be a difficult decision whether or not to jump in altogether. However, rather than trying to outguess the market, you can incorporate an investment strategy that takes market highs and lows into account—dollarcost averaging. Dollar-cost averaging works similarly to a 401(k) plan. You contribute a fixed amount of money in regular installments over time, helping to take the sting out of market volatility. It could be $10 a week or $200 a month. The idea is to invest consistently and ignore all the short-term fluctuations in the market. People, by nature, tend to buy a lot of stock when prices are rising and stop buying them altogether when prices are low. Dollar-cost averaging forces you to do the opposite—you end up buying the most stock when prices are low. And it helps you adhere to a disciplined approach of investing on a regular basis, even in declining markets. Dollar-cost averaging does not assure you of a profit or protect you from a loss. You should also consider your ability to continue to dollar-cost average through changing markets. Our financial advisors can help you determine if dollar-cost averaging is right for you. For more information and to learn more, call 800.533.6773, ext. 2107, to schedule an appointment. What the Raised Debt Ceiling Means to You Changes to Student Loans & Low Mortgage Rates With the deal to raise the nation’s debt ceiling to reduce government spending in place, learn about changes to student loans and advantages of getting a mortgage now. Student Loans – Undergraduates will still be eligible to receive subsidized Stafford student loans. However, this loan will no longer be available to graduate students as of July 1, 2012. Student Drawing Winners Announced Congratulations to our Campus Package, Wiscard and TitanCard sweepstakes winners, Lina from UW-Green Bay, Liam from UW-Madison & Tawny from UW Oshkosh. Students who opened a Campus Package online or linked their Wiscards and TitanCards this summer were entered to win. In addition to an Apple iPad or MacBook Pro, they each won a $250 scholarship. UW-Madison Parents’ Weekend The change to Subsidized Stafford loans for graduate students was made to cover the shortfall of the Pell Grant program, which provides grants to low and moderate-income students. The Pell Grant program still has a $1.3 billion deficit, which may change eligibility requirements. Learn more at studentaid.ed.gov. You can also learn about our Private Student Loan option at uwcu.org. We are sponsoring UW-Madison’s First-Year Parents’ Weekend, November 4–6. Hosted by the Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA), Parents’ Weekend is an opportunity for parents to come to campus and participate in activities inherent to the student experience. Learn more about this event at uwalumni.com/parentsweekend. Mortgages – Mortgage rates will stay low for now. However, there will likely be less incentives for potential homebuyers as details of the debt deal come together. Lawmakers are working on a simpler tax system with lower tax rates and fewer tax breaks that potentially could reduce mortgage tax deductions. If you are thinking of buying a home, it may be best to act quickly because of these upcoming changes. Learn about our affordable home loans at uwcu.org.
