McGinnis, MD, Internist and Pediatrician at Louisburg Family Care, answers frequently asked questions about the importance of childhood immunizations. 1) Why are immunizations important for the safety and well-being of a child? It’s important for parents to educate themselves on issues pertaining to their child’s health and remain his or her advocate. Raising children is challenging enough without having to filter out all of the misinformation available in Michael P. McGinnis, MD print and on the Internet regarding immunizations. Following the routine schedule for childhood immunizations provides your child with protection from a wide array of illnesses and related complications of those illnesses, including death. 2) There are several common misconceptions about immunizations. Can you provide accurate information about these claims? “Immunizations cause autism.” The origin of this false claim came from an article published in 1998 in the Journal Lancet. Many subsequent studies have shown no link between autism and childhood immunizations, and that article has since been retracted. “If all other children are immunized, my child doesn’t need to be.” Leaving your child unprotected against a vaccine-preventable illness is not a risk worth taking. A single exposure to such an illness could lead to an otherwise preventable cause of infertility (due to lack of immunity and exposure to mumps); a brain infection, such as meningitis or encephalitis, deafness or death (due to lack of immunity and exposure to Hib, Strep pneumoniae, measles or others); lifelong liver disease, liver failure and/or liver cancer (due to lack of immunity and exposure to hepatitis B); or cervical cancer (due to lack of immunity and exposure to HPV). “Immunizations are too expensive.” Preventive services, such as immunizations, are covered by insurance. If you don’t have health insurance, the Miami County Health Department is a great resource for standard immunizations at little or no cost. 3) Is it important to follow the routine immunization schedule? Yes. Following the routine immunization schedule gives your child the most protection with the fewest shots and provides protection at a time when they are at highest risk for many of the illnesses covered. 4) Where can I get additional information about immunizations? The most important job of any parent is loving and caring for your child, as well as preparing him or her for a long, healthy life. Your partner in this task is your child’s health care provider, and they are a tremendous reference for immunization-related questions or concerns. Other great resources for vaccinerelated information can be found on the websites of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP.org), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP.org), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC.gov) and the World Health Organization (WHO.org). Expanded Walk-In Clinic Opens in Paola In October, Associates in Family Care – Paola (AFC-Paola) will open its expanded clinic space to include a special area dedicated to serving walk-in patients. The clinic has been providing walk-in care and extended hours since last September. “We want to offer the best care possible in a patient-friendly manner,” said Eric L. Dyck, MD, family practice physician who provides care for the walk-in patients. “Having dedicated space will further help us offer walk-in care. Our expansion will also help open space in the current clinic for an additional provider to see AFC-Paola patients.” This new walk-in clinic was developed as a result of community input received during the Community Health Needs Assessment. It features additional space to accommodate people who need immediate care. The addition includes patient rooms, a nursing station, an office for the providers and a waiting room dedicated to walk-in patients. This expansion will improve patient flow throughout both sides of the clinic. AFC-Paola has also added two new family practice providers. Jawaria Khalid, MD, and Karl Kroen, APRN, have joined Kerri L. Fellows, MD, and Brooke Ottesen, APRN, in caring for patients. F or Dwight Heincker of Spring Hill, being stuck in a recliner was no way to live. Active all his life, including competing as a high school and college athlete, Dwight, 56, suffered hip pain in his 30s and 40s. It finally got so bad he went to see William W. Bohn, MD, at Johnson County Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. He found out he had a congenital problem called hip dysplasia. “My hips never bothered me when I was younger,” Dwight said. “But by the time I went to see Dr. Bohn, I was in constant pain on my left side. It hurt to do anything. It hurt to walk.” Dwight tried steroid injections. But they only helped for a while. “Dr. Bohn told me, ‘The good news is we can fix this with surgery. The bad news is you will have to see me again.’ So I knew I’d eventually be back to replace the other hip,” he said. This year, almost exactly 10 years Dwight Heincker is happy to be back to his active life after a total hip replacement surgery at Olathe Medical after the first surgery on his left hip, Center. He is now pain-free and able to enjoy his hobbies like fishing, gardening and cutting wood. Dwight was back to see Dr. Bohn for his right hip. He performed the total hip pain after the procedure. I walked the next day. I was walking all replacement at Olathe Medical Center. Dwight was surprised by around the hospital.” how much easier the recovery was the second time around. "Now I can go out and cut wood, mow grass, work in the “This is a fantastic procedure,” he said. “I had almost no garden. I can get back to life. I was not able to do any of those things before surgery. It’s only been five months, so I’m still healing, but last night I went out to the barn and mixed and poured some concrete and dug potatoes.” His advice to anyone experiencing hip or joint pain: “See what your options are. If the doctor says a total hip replacement is the way to go, don’t be afraid of it. I wish I had done it earlier. Why go through the pain if you don’t have to?” “Once the pain is gone, you’ve got your life back.” "Once the pain is gone, you've got your life back." -Dwight Heincker olathehealth.org FREE JOINT PAIN SEMINAR & WEBINAR Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. Visit olathehealth.org/classes or call 913-791-4396 to register. In fact, she was expecting it. “I wasn’t surprised at all; I’m a nurse so I guess I was kind of expecting it. I would’ve been more surprised if nothing ever happened.” Before quitting 10 years ago, Ellen Rowan-Webb, 74, was a smoker for 40-plus years. She learned of a new screening being offered called a low-dose CT lung scan. She decided to schedule the screening, given her smoking history. At the same time, she received a heart scan to measure the amount of calcified plaque in her arteries. “My calcium scoring came back good, but they noticed a teeny, tiny nodule on my lungs," Ellen said. Ellen's pulmonologist, Dominique M. Crain, MD, with Consultants in Pulmonary Medicine, recommended monitoring the lump using CT scans every six months. Last December, the scan showed the nodule was growing, and it was cancer. Dr. Crain teamed up with radiation oncologist Stephen R. Smalley, MD, at Olathe Regional Oncology Center, to quickly devise and implement a personalized treatment plan for Ellen. She had two options - surgery to remove a part of her lung or stereotactic radiation therapy. She chose the noninvasive route of stereotactic radiation therapy. Stereotactic radiation therapy uses focused rays of highdose radiation given over fewer treatments than traditional radiation therapy. Several beams of radiation are targeted at the tumor from various angles. Ellen began radiation in January, needing only three treatments over three days. “I drove myself to and from the hospital and continued my daily activities as normal," Ellen said. "I had no side effects.” Ellen was thrilled she could continue her hobbies like reading, writing and gardening during her treatment period. Since receiving the radiation therapy, the nodule has shrunk considerably. Ellen Rowan-Webb smoked for more than 40 years. Her choice to get a low-dose CT scan resulted in early detection of lung cancer. "With this wonderful response to therapy, there is an excellent prospect of a permanent cure," Dr. Smalley said. Ellen will continue getting CT scans every six months to monitor her lungs. “I feel great," she said. "In fact, since my last treatment in January, I haven’t had to go to the doctor except for my annual blood work in May. And it all came back perfect!” Ellen would’ve never known about the small nodule on her lungs if she had not elected to receive a low-dose CT scan. “It’s important to pay attention to what health screenings are being offered, and if they apply to you," Ellen said. "If I didn’t sign up for this particular scan, I might not be sitting here right now.” Should You Be Screened For Lung Cancer? Olathe Medical Center offers low-dose CT lung scans to help detect lung cancer early, before symptoms begin to occur and when it is more treatable. Candidates for low-dose CT lung screenings should meet the following criteria: n Ages 50-74 years old n History of regular smoking, now or in the past How to schedule or learn more: Please call Jeni Wakefield, Nurse Navigator, at 913-324-8511. She can answer your questions, talk through the required criteria and help you schedule a screening. His nose was always stuffy or runny, and he woke up every morning with a sinus headache. It affected his sleep. It affected his family. It affected his life. When the symptoms first started, Chuck had a few allergy and sinus tests done. He used over-the-counter and prescription allergy medicines and nose spray to manage his symptoms. “I always sounded nasal and was stuffy,” Chuck said. “My kids said it was annoying to listen to all the time.” Nothing was easy. If Chuck went on a camping trip with his family, he had to worry about always having tissues with him. When going out with friends, he would sometimes have to ask them to stop at a store, so he could buy over-thecounter medicine. His symptoms seemed to be worse in the evenings. “Even breathing and talking were hard,” Chuck said. “Every day someone would ask me if I had a cold.” Chuck works in retail management and at times would find himself in compromising situations with a customer when he needed a tissue and didn’t have one on-hand. Chuck's symptoms started affecting his sleep. He overslept his alarm a few times this past winter, which is not a normal habit for him. A co-worker pointed out that his sinuses were probably affecting his sleep. His headaches were also getting worse, and for the first time, he had to call in sick to work with a headache. That’s when Chuck decided to do something about it. "I wish I had done [Balloon Sinuplasty] sooner. Overall, I am a happier person now." -Chuck Smith Chuck was referred to Brian A. Metz, MD, FACS, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Olathe Medical Center. Dr. Metz told Chuck about a minimally-invasive procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty that could help alleviate his chronic sinus problems. He had the procedure in April, and the results changed his life. olathehealth.org Chuck Smith suffered from chronic sinus infections for more than 15 years. He's now breathing easier after a minimally-invasive procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty. "I feel great!" Chuck said. "When I took over-the-counter medicine, my symptoms improved, but nothing like how good I feel now. There is no comparison. I never oversleep now, and I'm getting better sleep. I can tell a huge difference." Chuck said the recovery period from the surgery was almost non-existent. He couldn't believe he suffered through the symptoms for so long before deciding to take this step. "The surgery was easy, and I needed very little downtime after," he said. "I wish I had done it sooner. I suffered from chronic sinus issues for all of my 40s. I think about how much fuller my life might have been if I hadn’t waited so long. Overall, I am a happier person now. I am getting better sleep, and I don’t have headaches. In the four months since I've had surgery, I have not been asked once if I have a cold! And, I haven't bought a single tissue since the surgery." To learn more about Balloon Sinuplasty, visit olathehealth.org/sinus. Your best gardening tool? Legs that go all afternoon.
