New building materials and construction methods are effectively resulting in “waterproof” buildings. They trap moisture inside just as effectively as they keep moisture out. Open doors and windows provide air circulation and ventilation but security considerations mean that we are increasingly less likely to use this option. As a result houses tend to remain closed up more often. Poor ventilation results in a buildup of moisture generated by cooking/bathing/showering/clothes washing-drying/LPG gas heating...even breathing! Stale air can be caused by cooking smells, odors remaining in the bathroom, a general lack of ventilation around the house as well as a damp atmosphere. PROBLEMS CAUSED BY POOR VENTILATION All these problems cause an avoidable level of discomfort as well as the risk of respiratory illness and general poor health. Problems also occur when steam from the kitchen or bathroom finds cooler surfaces around the house on which to condense. Warm, moisture-laden air condenses on cold surfaces such as glass, cold ceilings and cold wet-wall linings. This is the moisture that you can see. Moisture you cannot see is still present in the atmosphere and will be absorbed into fabrics, wall linings, bedding, etc. Attempts to conserve heat by sealing windows and therefore reducing natural ventilation makes this problem even worse. Condensation can cause considerable problems from peeling wallpaper and mold growth to severe long term structural damage to building materials. MOISTURE GENERATORS: Stale air out BATHROOM SHOWERING CONDENSATION GAS HEATING Correct Ventilation KITCHEN TOILET LAUNDRY 2 BREATHING WATERING PLANTS Ventilate Outside = Healthy Home Incorrect Ventilation Trapped moist air Inside the home = Unhealthy VENTILATION SELECTION YOUR VENTILATION SOLUTIONS It is best to remove moisture from where it is generated to outside the house before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the house. Use ducted fans, through-wall fans or window fans at all times. DO NOT use ceiling fans which discharge into the ceiling cavity, this only moves the problem. Moisture will permeate insulation and ceiling linings causing further problems. In particular with bathrooms think in terms of “room-conditioning”. Warm, moist air is immediately attracted to cold surfaces, where it condenses into water droplets. Cold surfaces include glass, mirrors, tiles, wet-wall linings, cold un-insulated ceiling linings, etc. You cannot remove all of this air at a rate fast enough to stop this happening and if you could, you would be standing in a wind tunnel. Use of a bathroom heater to warm the room prior to use greatly assists in reducing condensation. FAN PLACEMENT Careful location of an extraction fan will ensure maximum air-flow through the room. Air extracted from a bathroom, for example, can be replaced with dry air drawn from an adjacent bedroom or hallway, in turn, drawn from an open window or door. This ensures that fresh air is being drawn into the entire house at regular periods. Switching the fan on before starting showering or cooking sets up effective air-flows before condensation problems occur. Closing doors to adjacent living areas assists in stopping the transfer of moisture to those areas but ensure that sufficient air can enter under the door to replace extracted air. Use a door vent if necessary. For a fan to remove air effectively, the same amount of air being extracted must be able to enter the room. E.g. air in = air out. An air-tight room will mean no air movement. If the room is tightly sealed (e.g. a tight-fitting door, with no gap at the bottom), you may need to fit a through-door grille to allow replacement air into the room. Poor Circulation Medium Circulation Best Circulation 3 VENTILATION SELECTION FAN REGULATIONS WHAT THE LAW STATES “Buildings shall have a means of collecting or otherwise removing: cooking fumes and odors; steam from laundering, utensil washing, bathing and showering; odors from sanitary and waste storage spaces; poisonous or flammable fumes and gases”. Natural Ventilation for the above is acceptable as long as opening windows in each room have an area of 5% or more of the floor area of the room. For internal rooms without natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation (extraction fans) must be installed to extract the air at given rates. Residential requirements are listed below. Where fans are used to remove moisture and other contaminants from kitchens, bathrooms and laundries in housing, the exhaust air must be ducted to the outside at the flow rates mentioned above. The above requirement for ducting also applies to any fan in those areas, even if there is an opening window (i.e. even if the fan is not a requirement to comply with ventilation regulations, but is installed as an optional extra). INDUSTRY RECOMMENDATIONS The mentioned flow rates below are minimum allowable. in general these would not be enough to overcome excessive moisture and condensation problems encountered in modern homes. The ventilation industry has a “Recommended Air-changes per Hour” approach solution. i.e. An air flow rate sufficient to remove/replace the total volume of air in a given room a specified number of times each hour. Obviously fans will not necessarily be left running for an hour - a fact which is taken into consideration in the formula. For example: A bathroom is recommended at between 11 & 15 air-changes per hour. Therefore 15 changes per hour means the total air in the room would be replaced after 4 minutes. E.g (60 minutes @ 15 changes per hour = 4 minutes). This would mean an average bathroom usage of 12 - 16 minutes resulting in the total air volume being changed 3 to 4 times. This equates to a rate of 15 ACH. 4 BATHROOMS KITCHENS The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 liters per second when installed. The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 50 liters per second when installed. TOILETS LAUNDRIES The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 liters per second when installed. The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 20 liters per second when installed. VENTILATION SELECTION CALCULATING FAN PERFORMANCE Calculate the room volume in meters (l x W x H). LITERS / SECOND (I/S) CUBIC METERS / HOUR (m³/hr) WORKING OUT THE RIGHT FAN FOR THE JOB Milk 1 Litre 1m Multiply the room volume by the recommended air changes per hour for that room. Always use the higher limit. 1m The result is the total performance required in cubic metres per hour. 1m TO CONVERT FROM ONE TO OTHER TYPES OF MEASUREMENT: If you know Liters/ Second (l/s): l/s x 3.6 = m³/hr (e.g. 25 l/s x 3.6 = 90m³/hr). If you know Cubic Meters/Hour (m³/hr): m³/hr ÷ 3.6 = l/s (e.g. 200m³/hr ÷ 3.6 = 55.55 l/s). Note: 1m 3 = 1000 Liters ACH Select a fan with a higher performance than this figure. For Example: What is the best fan for a bathroom that is 2.8m long by 2.8m wide with a ceiling height of 2.4m? Calculate the volume of the bathroom: 2.8 x 2.8 x 2.4 = 18.8m 11-15 air changes per hour are recommended for a bathroom. Multiply the room volume by 15: 18.8m 3 x 15 = 282m 3 /hr. AIR CHANGERS PER HOUR (ACH) The number of times the total room volume of air is changed each hour. Refer to the table below for the recommended Air Changes per hour based on the room type. The fan to choose for this bathroom would be a fan that performs at greater than 282m Application Description Air Changes Per Hour Bathrooms 11 - 15 Kitchens - (domestic) 15 - 20 Laundries - (no drier) 6 - 10 Laundries - (with drier) 10 - 30 Toilets 6 - 10 400 Bedroom 2-5 350 Offices 6 - 10 Cafés 10 - 12 Canteens 8 - 12 Garages 6-8 Kitchens - (commercial) Restaurants 20 - 30 8 - 12 Factories 8 - 10 Stores & Warehouses 3-6 Libraries 3-5 Classroom 5-7 A fan that has a performance level of 313m 3 / hr or higher (e.g. XP150, or SF150) would do this job. SIMPLE FACTS: Smaller duct = greater resistance to airflow. More bends = greater resistance to airflow. Longer duct runs = increasingly reduced airflow. 01 Wrinkled ducting causes turbulence and reduces airflow: WRINKLED DUCT AIRFLOW COMPARE CENTRIFUGAL AGAINST AXIAL FAN PERFORMANCE: SF100 (axial) vs an SF200 (centrifugal) fan. The starting point is the free air performance of 23 l/s for the axial and 31 l/s for the centrifugal. As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 20Pa of pressure the 100mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 100mm centrifugal fan is still moving 29 l/s! SF100 & SF200 PERFORMANCE GRAPH* 02 Smoother, extended ducting allows smooth, increased airflow: SMOOTH DUCT AIRFLOW SF200 FAN TYPE SF100 *Graphs are a visual representation only. Centrifugal: Pressure developing fans which achieve good flow against the resistance created in a ducted system. Particularly useful in venting areas like internal bathrooms/laundries, multi-room extraction systems, heat-transfer systems, etc. Mixed Flow: Powerful in-duct mounted fans, designed for applications that require high air flows, with low relative noise. Can handle more pressure than an axial fan, although not as powerful as a centrifugal fan. Axial: Suitable for wall, window and roof applications where they can extract directly to the outside. Short duct runs are an option but the length of duct should be limited ID150 (axial) vs a MAN150 (centrifugal) fan. The starting point is the free air performance of 89 l/s for the axial and 115 l/s for the centrifugal. As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases the volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 120 Pa of pressure the 150mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 150mm centrifugal fan is still moving 102 l/s! 0 72 144 216 288 360 432 504 350 300 MAN150 250 200 e.g. 100mm dia : 2-3m length 125mm dia : 3-4m length 150mm dia : 4-5m length 150 100 50 0 6 ID150 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 *Graphs are a visual representation only. WET AREAS & RECOMMENDED FAN TYPES ID150 (axial) vs a MAN150 (centrifugal) fan. When considering where in the room to place an extractor fan, you must consider the wet areas. Zone 1: This is the zone directly within the shower or bath up to 2.25 meters above the floor and 150mm around the bath/shower cubicle. A SELV fan or an in-line fan kit will be required in this zone. For example if a fan is mounted directly over the bath or shower it must be a low voltage fan (SELV). Zone 1: Requires a SELV Fan or an In-Line fan kit Zone 2: Any fan model can be used Zone 3: Any fan model can be used Zone 2: This zone is 0.6 meters horizontally outside of zone 1 and up to 2.25 meters above the floor. Zone 3: The outer layer is zone 3, which is 2.4 metres horizontally HOW TO ORDER Select the model that exhausts the closest to your requirements. If the performance required falls between two fans, it is recommended you select the one handling the most air. 7 VENTILATION SELECTION FAN APPLICATION EXAMPLES Location of your ventilation fan will depend on the physical constraints of your room. The wet area zone guide (shown on the previous page) will help you decide the most suitable physical installation to meet your requirements. Within the above mounting options there are various other features available, such as: • • • • TIMER (maintain fan run-on after the room is vacated). PULLCORD (Switch at fan, instead of wall switch control). AUTO-SHUTTER (electrically operated shutters inside the fan - closed when the fan is not running to stop droughts). PIR SENSOR (provide automatic motion-sensor control of fans). 1. Ceiling Mounted Fan Designed for low-pitch roofs or between floors, where there is no ceiling access. Also available with heat lamps & lighting. 01 4. In-Line Mounted Fan Kit Most common bathroom installation, the fan is mounted in the ceiling space with the grille directly above the source of the steam. Generally this type of installation is quieter as the fan is not directly in the room. 04 2.Thru Wall Fan Kit Used where the bathroom is on an external wall, or there is no ceiling space for an in-line fan. 02 3. Window Mounted Fan Used in situations where an existing window fan is being replaced, or where there is no available external wall space and no ceiling space access. 03 8 5.Thru Roof Kit Used where there is limited access to the roof space, or where there is no soffit available. Thru Roof Kits can be used with any extraction fan, or use a Thru Roof Fan Kit with the fan mounted within the cowl. 05 Redu carb cing the on fo otprin t ENERGY EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS These fans offer substantial energy savings, utilizing market leading motor technology, which lasts considerably longer than conventional AC motors. SIZING A FAN TO A ROOM To get maximum comfort and energy savings, it is necessary to choose the correct size fan for a room. Blade span is the key. A fan that is too small or too big for your room may look awkward. A fan that is too small probably will not move enough air and a fan is too big might over power the room.
