The Journey Continues
Every Girl Can™ was created in the fall of 2006 as an after school program for girls at Takoma Park Middle School in
Silver Spring, Maryland by Yasmin Anderson-Smith, MCRP, AICI CIP, president of KYMS Image International, based in
Bowie, Maryland. The program was initially sponsored as a “Rec Extra” after school program of the Montgomery
County, Department of Recreation. Every Girl Can™ is a personal development and life skills enrichment program designed to empower girls to make smart choices that affect their present and future lives. The program offers a fun, creative, learning experiences to educate and inspire middle school girls to become self-confident through the development
of a strong and positive self image, self-esteem, and skills in etiquette, civility, personal appearance. Every Girl Can™
provides girls with tools to help them navigate the difficult and often confusing transition from teenage to young adulthood. The primary goal is to help girls build skills, develop a positive self-image and be empowered to make positive life
choices. By reaffirming their identity and uniqueness, girls in the program will learn to develop the strength, courage
and life skills need to deal with future some of life’s personal challenges. The Every Girl Can “Smart Image” Conference and Expo is a spin-off from the after school and summer programs
In 2009, Every Girl Can™ and other KYMS youth training programs expanded to new schools and community-based
organizations in the Washington DC Metro Area. During 2009, Yasmin conducted image and etiquette programs for Girl
Scout troops, middle schools, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, churches, community centers and the Positive Pathways for Teens
program. Yasmin was a guest presenter at the Free to be Me - Bully Free Conference held at Holy Cross High School
in Bethesda, Maryland and presented other life skills, image and civility programs locally and internationally including,
at the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica, Bowie State University, the 2009 annual conference of the
Association of Image Consultants International (AICI) held in Irvine, California and Montgomery College where she is
an adjunct faculty member. Her role as international chair of the AICI Civility Counts Project is integral to the mission
of all her training programs which is, transforming the lives of youth and adults through a positive image and brand.
Yasmin is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, Howard University, Leadership Prince George’s, the London
Image Institute and a certified image professional of the Association of Image Consultants International. In 2009,
Yasmin co-authored Executive Image Power and became a master trainer with the International Consortium of Civility
Trainers based in Toronto, Canada. Discover Civility was launched as a new sub-brand of the KYMS family. The focus

Paulette Watson, Ph. D. (Yasmin’s sister) is a collaborating partner in the development of Every Girl Can™.
Dr. Watson is a veteran high school language arts teacher and has served as Head of the Department of English, and Vice
Principal at St. Hugh’s High School in Kingston, Jamaica, and also as a lecturer at Mico Teachers’ College in that city.
A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Dr. Watson is a former faculty member of Kansas State University
where she completed her Ph.D. in Education with a focus in curriculum and instruction. Dr. Watson is currently a senior
Education Program Consultant at the Massachusetts State Department of Education.
The Vision
Every Girl Can™ will be an internationally renowned program of The Maryland Institute for Civility and Image,
the soon to be launched, not-for-profit, training and development arm of KYMS. The Institute will be dedicated to cultivating and sowing the seeds of civility as the foundation for personal and professional image and branding, and providing life skills training and other educational enrichment opportunities for youth and adults. About the Keynote Presenters
First Lady of Prince George’s County, Leslie E. Johnson
After receiving a B.A. degree in history from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, Leslie
earned her Juris Doctorate from the Howard University School of Law where she met and
fell in love with now-County Executive, Jack Johnson. Upon graduation from Howard, Leslie served as a Reginald Heber Smith Fellow lawyer at Neighborhood Legal Services before
joining the District of Columbia Government, from which she recently retired after twentyseven years as a dedicated and committed public servant. While working for the District of
Columbia, Leslie held numerous positions, including Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor, Legislative Liaison, and Administrative Law.
While maintaining a successful professional career, Leslie has always found time to give
back to the community. Some of the groups with which Leslie has worked are: The Shaw
Area Optimist Club; Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts; Kettering-Largo Boys and Girls Club;
Largo High School PTA and Cheerleaders; Kenmoor Middle School Parent Association; DeMatha Catholic High School Parent Club; St. Mark’s Volunteers; Howard University’s
School of Business Parent Support Group and the Shiloh Baptist Church Sunday School
among others. One of Leslie’s greatest passions is working for progress on issues affecting
women and children, especially those with unique life challenges. She co-founded the Sisters to Sisters Empowerment program which is designed to reduce the number of women in our local correctional center and to provide them the strength, guidance and life skills needed as they prepare to re-enter society. A residence
named Leslie’s House was renovated and opened in December 2004 and serves as an after-care home for recently released women. Another effort which Leslie is very proud is Prince George’s Women United to Help Others which she
founded in 2007 because she believes that each person’s life should be committed to community service and helping to
uplift others. The program acts as a vehicle for Prince George’s women from all walks of life to use their wisdom,
skills, special gifts and resources to help girls and young women rise to their full potential and become future leaders
in Prince George’s County and beyond. Leslie volunteers because it is her passion and has received numerous awards
for her efforts and spirit of giving. She serves on the Literacy Council of Prince George’s County and the Prince
George's Community College Foundation boards. She is particularly proud of this service because the focus is on
learning and the development of skills critical to ensure success in the work place and in society. She is often heard
talking about the importance of life-long learning and is deeply committed to ensuring these opportunities throughout
our County. Leslie Johnson has been blessed with many accomplishments in her life, but she considers her highest
accomplishment to be motherhood. Jack and Leslie are the proud parents of three wonderful adult children and grandparents to their first grandchild, Christian Jackson Jones.
Award-Winning Author, Janice Ferebee
Janice Ferebee, MSW is Director of the Bethune Program Development Center at the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW), responsible for community-based and national programs for women and girls of African descent, appointed by human rights icon,
Dr. Dorothy I. Height. In addition, she is an author, consultant, speaker, and founder and
CEO of Ferebee Enterprises International, Inc. (FEI), a global female empowerment social
enterprise. Janice is the self-published author of an innovative, interactive, personal growth
and development handbook series for girls, Got It Goin’ On® (GIGO®). She is also the
creator of the award winning GIGO® Empowerment Program for Girls and the mastermind behind the GIGO® Girls:
Hip Hop Fitness & Empowerment Team. Her life experiences and over thirty years of expertise advancing the selfempowerment and leadership of girls and young women were recognized by ESSENCE and Oprah Winfrey, who acknowledged GIGO® as an effective empowerment solution for girls. Janice holds a Master of Social Work degree
from the University of Pennsylvania and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Guest Presenter Profiles
Dr. Rita Wutoh, M.D., MPH
is a board certified Internist and Director of the Henry Wise Wellness Center at
Bowie State University. She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from University of Virginia, a medical degree
from University of Maryland at Baltimore and a master's degree in public health at Johns Hopkins School of Public
Health. Dr. Wutoh has worked in several arenas of health care including international health, academia and private practice. She served as a co-founder and project director for a girls alternative school in Dakar, Senegal and has been medical director for several medical missions to West Africa. In addition, to her professional responsibilities, Dr. Wutoh has
authored children's books and enjoys traveling and cooking.
Claire Nelson, Ph.D.
Dr. Nelson holds an industrial engineering degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo,
Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in engineering management from the George Washington University. Dr. Nelson has served on numerous boards/committees including: US Department of Commerce US/Caribbean Business Development Council; International
Think Tank, Commission on Pan-African Affairs, Constituency for Africa; National Democratic Institute/Carter Center Election
Observer, Caribbean Heritage Group; National Society of Black Engineers-Alumni Extension; Dr. Nelson is sought after as a
speaker on issues pertaining to economic development, globalization, and issues concerning the Caribbean and its peoples.
Gail Crowder
is a native of San Antonio, Texas, Ms. Crowder is the Founder and President of Glamour At Its Latest
(G.A.I.L.) a full-service image consulting firm serving men and women. With over 25 years of experience in the fashion industry,
Gail has dressed celebrities, political figures, and women from all walks of life. Her heart and focus are on women, from stay-athome moms to executives. Her style philosophy is teaching women how to dress by building a firm foundation for their wardrobe
accomplished through the proper fit of bras and undergarments. Gail has presented on women’s fashion and design throughout the
United States and the Caribbean. She is also the proud co-owner of Image Me, an organization committed to empowering women
through education, networking and dialogue. Gail is a member of the Association of Image Consultants International.
L. Isabelle Blackwood-Ellis, Ph.D.
is a clinical psychologist and co-owner of Psychological and Educational Associates, PLLC. Dr. Blackwood-Ellis has over 20 years experience received her Masters and Doctorate Degrees from the University of
Virginia and her Bachelors Degree from Amherst College. She is trained as both a school psychologist and a clinical psychologist.
Dr. Blackwood-Ellis has extensive experience providing individual, family, group, and couples therapy; psycho-diagnostic and psycho educational evaluations; admissions testing, consultation; and training to children, adolescents, and adults. Her areas of expertise include physical and sexual abuse, learning disabilities, adjustment issues, depression, and women’s issues. 202-726.6062, Ext.

Chanel Outley is a sophomore Industrial Engineering student at Pennsylvania State University.
A native of Prince George’s
County, Chanel graduated from Charles Herbert Flowers High School in 2008 in the top 5 percent of students in the state of Maryland. Chanel is highly engaged in student activities at Penn. State including the Engineering Ambassadors, National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People, Society of Women Engineers, and THON. Chanel is a member of the Leadership Board for
Penn State’s FastStart program,will serve as the 2010-2011 THON Chair for Penn State’s chapter of the National Society of Black
Engineers, and is a mentor to incoming freshman through Penn State’s Multicultural Engineering Program .
Sha-Shana Crichton, Esq. is a licensed attorney and literary agent.
She is the proud graduate of Howard University School of Law and the University of the West Indies. Sha-Shana teaches legal research and writing at Howard
University School of Law and is fluent in French and Spanish.
Cindy Ann Peterson
is an independent fashion and design consultant specializing in couture. Her interest and passion is
the creation of a complete client package by dovetailing her couture skills with image consulting, creating a product that is a unique
synthesis of fashion and image transformation. Her works have been nationally recognized and published in numerous magazines.
Cindy received her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a major in Apparel, Textiles and Design, and a minor in Business Administration. She has studied image management under Dominique Isbecque from the Fashion Institute of Technology in
New York City and is a member of the Association of Image Consultants International .
Onyinye Nwokorie
is a junior at Springbrook High School and an intern with KYMS Image International. Ms. Nworoke
leads a school-based research project on girl-on-girl hate which encompasses cyber bullying and sexting. Her research has led her to
understand some of the reasons behind the negative behaviors of teen girls and will result in a technology-based solution. Fueled by
her passion for empowering girls and women, she is involved in SGA and MCR (county-level student government), community
service and is a member of the marching band dance team at Springbrook. Ms. Onyinye is college bound with a possible focus on
mass communication. Her interests include public speaking, music, reading and hosting her own radio or TV talk show.
Domonique Malloy
is the creative owner of 3D-Desserts Catering Company located in Laurel Maryland. Dominique graduated from Stratford University with an Associate Degree in advanced culinary arts and is currently working

Pat Locke
is the President and CEO of LifePlan Services, dedicated to promoting core life skills including etiquette,
civility, communications, image management, leadership and ethics. Pat has presented seminars to corporations, professionals, and educational foundations and given workshops to Children in Crisis Network, a recovering gang members’
program in North Carolina. She received her etiquette training from the Emily Post Institute and is certified by the Association of Image Consultants International and with St. Petersburg College, FL as a certified professional coach. Pat is an
Internationally Certified Montessori Educator through the Washington Montessori Institute and holds a Masters in

Morgan Chandler
is co-founder of Miss Believe, a nonprofit organization based in Maryland dedicated to improving the self-image of adolescent girls in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Miss Believe offers resources and programs for building self-perception in adolescent girls, through education mentorship, constructive guidance, role models,
and friendship. Miss Believe was created to produce healthy, confident, young powerful girls who will later build on

Carlotta Wade
is a program specialist with the Maryland National Capitol Park and Planning Commission. Ms.
Wade has coordinated and managed numerous educational and recreational programs for teen and pre teen girls. In her
capacity as program specialist, Ms. Wade has also assisted with the planning and implementation of several conferences
for girls including, Diamonds and Pearls, Me Myself and I, Positive Pathways for Teens. Ms. Wade is the Director of
Advocates of Peace Girls mentoring program. She graduated from Rutgers University and is a member of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority.
Vanessa Ballard
is a Certified Fitness and Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Weight Management Consultant and
Personal Trainer. Ms. Ballard provides individual coaching and designs personalized nutrition programs as a tool to help
individuals (teens to adults) lose body fat, maintain muscle, and gain energy. Ms. Ballard has a B. A. in Business Administration/Marketing and a Master’s degree in counseling psychology from Bowie State University. Vanessa has
helped many women on their journey to a healthy lifestyle and it is her desire provide a solution to overcoming obesity

Allison Manswell
has a BA in Justice and Law Enforcement from the University of Winnipeg, Canada and a
Masters degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Managerial leadership, from City University in
Bellevue, WA. Allison is the author of The Champions Ride — Success Skills for Teens. She has served as an adjunct
faculty member with the University of Phoenix, Maryland and online campuses. She delivers numerous workshops and
training seminars for youth and in corporate, government and educational settings. Ms. Manswell is known for her highenergy presentations and is one of the most electrifying speakers in the Les Brown Speakers Network.
Kimberly Booker
is the Founder and Executive Director of the Alexander Lance Booker Child Safety Foundation, a nonprofit established in the memory of her 12 year old son, Alex, killed in June, 2007 in a construction site accident at National Harbor,
Oxon Hill, MD. Since then, she has vigorously advocated for new laws to protect children. Kimberly has been a community servant
for over 25 years, championing several social causes and is a well-recognized advocate for the prevention of childhood accidental
death and injury and as a National Parent Advocate for Safe Kids USA. She co-wrote Federal Bill H.R. 3094 introduced by Congresswoman Donna Edwards-MD and State Senate Bill 985 sponsored by Senator C. Anthony Muse. keepingkidssafe@verizon.net
