2014 Annual Report - Cancer Support Community Arizona
BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF HOPE AND SUPPORT CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY ARIZONA 2014 ANNUAL REPORT COMMUNITY Mission During our 15th year, our commitment to those affected by cancer was as inspired To ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. as ever. Our focus was to look at where we have been and how far we have come so we could plan for the future. Having faced, and moved through, assorted challenges we found a renewed sense of community – the true core of who we are. As the year progressed, we discovered our community continued to develop and grow stronger. We began reconnecting with old friends like Diane Walker, one of our original founders, along with Bob and Paula Hardison, Neil Bassett, Jerry Hirsch and many others. Sharing that sense of community with old and new friends has been both uplifting and energizing. With this renewed energy and the strong circle of support for which we are so grateful, the staff and I are thrilled about our future. Vision So that no one faces cancer alone® “Cancer patients who participate in their fight for recovery along with their health care team — rather than being hopeless, helpless, passive victims of the disease — will improve the quality of their lives and may enhance the possibility of their recovery.” — Dr. Harold Benjamin, founder, The Wellness Community The Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that it is impossible to deliver quality cancer care without addressing a patient’s psychosocial needs and now requires that programs, like Cancer Support Community’s, be incorporated into all cancer treatment regimens. Our rededication, and strong sense of community, resonated with the more than 8,000 participants and their loved ones as they walked through our doors in 2014. They felt warm, welcomed, comforted, and connected. In the ever-changing and complex healthcare environment, we must always be mindful of not just the cancer patient but also the “person.” At Cancer Support Community Arizona, people living with cancer, and their circle of loved ones, can learn how to play an active role in treatment while finding the hope and support so necessary to improve the quality of their lives. We could not provide more than 100 critical programs monthly at no cost to participants without the generous gifts from individual and private donors like you. Thank you for continuing to ensure our vision: so that no one faces cancer alone®. With Sincere Thanks, Kathy M. Our Program offers Emotional Support Services, Healthy Lifestyle Activities, Educational Seminars, Social Connections and Resources and Referral. Our services are evidence-based, professionally facilitated and provided at no cost to our participants. Through participation in our Program, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of disease. THE RED CARPET EVENT: With the help of event sponsors, F2 Family Foundation and Cancer Treatment Centers of America®, The Red Carpet Event was a great success! Co-Chairs Debbie Gaby and Lea Haben led a committee of 25 communityminded men and women to support this event held on March 27. Community Champion, Deborah Bateman was named the 2014 Hope Award Recipient. 133 guests were in attendance and helped us raise over $64,000. Cost of Services At CSCAZ we provide all programs at no cost to our members. We do this to ensure we do not increase the financial burden during a stressful and costly time in our members’ lives. “At no cost” certainly doesn’t mean free. The annual cost to CSCAZ is approximately $1,000,000. PORCH PARTY: Event Co-Chairs Sameer Keole, MD and Molly Stockley led the efforts of our 2014 Porch Party committee. Thanks to the support of both Mayo Clinic and Cancer Treatment Centers of America as well as 340 guests who were in attendance, CSCAZ raised more than $200,000 in support of our critical services. We honored a five-time pancreatic survivor and patient advocate, Kay Kays, along with Michael Gordon, MD, for their continued support in our community. The money raised at our 2014 Porch Party will provide services for over 2,000 individuals. 2014 New Program Services NEW PROGRAM MODEL: CSCAZ established a Continuum of Care Model to help members thrive into survivorship. Two new programs now offered are Surviving and Thriving and Living with Loss. These new support groups were added to support our members throughout their journey. PROGRAM EXPANSION: To better serve people throughout the Valley, CSCAZ launched a Community Support Model. Our goal is to build a community of support for cancer care that will lead to a broad spectrum of services including support groups for both those diagnosed as well as family members in community centers, churches and community organizations throughout the Valley. We currently offer many of our services at locations throughout the Valley including Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix, Via Linda Senior Center, Peoria Community Center, Desert Botanical Garden and Paradise Valley United Methodist. The partnerships that we have created with these community locations allow us to offer services to individuals they otherwise do not have access to and in places where they are receiving cancer care or have an existing community of support.
