POSTMASTER: Send address changes to: And All That Jazz, 2787 Del Monte St., West Sacramento, CA 95691-3811. by Greg Willett T his year’s Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee is now behind us. It’s time for reflection, wrap-ups, and (while thoughts are still fresh in our mind) putting pen to paper about what we can do to make things even better in 2012. We welcome input from everyone. As you can imagine, I’ve heard from many event attendees about what they enjoyed, and what suggestions they might have for improvement. Please know that every suggestion is important, and while planning for future events, we’ll consider all input. Feel free to e-mail us directly at info@sacjazz.com, drop a note to the office, or give us a call. Several suggestions have already come to the office. Thank you to the folks who have already offered their great ideas. From the Opening Parade to the Closing Ceremony, it’s very clear that this great event belongs to the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. In the opening moments of the parade, we had a chance to wave goodbye to our dear friend, musician and former Executive Director, Gene Berthelsen. At closing, we had an opportunity to recognize our own Bob Ringwald as Emperor for the 2012 event. It’s only been through the SUMMARY The Sac. Trad. This official meeting is open to all members of the STJS and their guests; the general public is also welcome. ADMISSION Admission to “Jazz Sunday” is by donation of $8 for members, $12 for non-members. Persons under 12 are admitted free. Youth 12-20 (members) $5, youth 12-20 (non-members) $7. We especially encourage attendance by music students in our jam sets. GOLD CARD AUDITIONS Auditions are held twice a year: Mar. & Oct., 11 am prior to “Jazz Sunday.” Applications are available from the Gold Card Coordinator, to be completed one month before the audition. Call 372-5277 for details. STJS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR <greg@sacjazz.com> tireless efforts of folks like these that we still have the event. It never ceases to amaze me that every year over 2000 people—some coming from across the country—volunteer their time and energy to make the Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee happen. A small staff works on the event for the better part of a year, but it could not happen without the support and efforts of every single volunteer. Thanks to everyone! Let’s pause and appreciate a job well done, for we start work on the 2012 event almost immediately. Speaking of on-going efforts, be sure to visit our websites often. Both sacjazz.com and sacjazz.org offer amazing amounts of club and Festival information. Take a look at the STJS site (sacjazz.org) where you’ll find an updated schedule of our Jazz in the Park free concert series. We’ve once again teamed up with the City of Sacramento to bring great music to several local parks. This year features a wide selection of musical offerings, and you’ll find location and band details listed on-line. If you don’t have access to a computer, a quick call to the office will get you the info you need. JAZZ FESTIVAL & JUBILEE May 25–28, 2012 – Memorial Day Wknd. July 2011 Notes... (cont.) While we reflect on our recent Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee, and make plans for the the success of the 2012 edition, let’s all remember that there’s several things that happen in between. STJS Trad. Jazz Camp starts next month. Jazz Sunday offers great music every month. A new version of TNT convenes early in the school year. Then there’s the Crab Feed, the Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival, ongoing fundraising... The list goes on and on. Each takes strong commitment and support. Call the office today, and let us know how you can help make the organization stronger. Thank you! 2 President’s Message by Tom Duff STJS PRESIDENT <tom.duff@hp.com> T he 2011 Jazz Festival & Jubilee is in the books. Who called for the rain on Saturday, anyway? As the clouds started building on Saturday afternoon, I was hoping that we did not get a downpour that would ruin this great event, but the rain did come. Except for some inconvenience, the bands continued to play, and we all endured. The festival continued through the weekend and became quite successful. The final numbers are not in yet, but I will expect that we will have done okay, rain and all. This year, I received many compliments on the quality of the sound, the selection of talent, and how organized the festival seemed to be. I can take absolutely NO credit for that. There are so many folks to thank that I am sure I will forget some, so I apologize in advance. I want to first and foremost thank Mr. Greg Willett, whose long hours of work really paid off. You did a great job, Greg! Next, I would like to thank our outstanding office staff, consisting of Vivian Abraham and Jennifer Colindres. You certainly achieve the impossible, year after year. The Operations Team of Grif Alm, Dennis Grimes, Bob Harries, Bob Mattingly, Crawford Paton, David Lambros, Kathleen Kelly, and Vivian Abraham really stepped up. Many of them took on new positions this year and executed flawlessly. Nancy Giffin also deserves thanks for her photos, videos, and hard work on the website, e-blasts, newsletter, Facebook and other things that project the STJS image to all of the festivals customers. Thanks to Jim Casseli for working on our “go to market” strategy. Thanks to Scott Kaufman for running another exuberant Swing Dance Contest! And thanks to the 2000 volunteers and managers that spent hundreds of hours planning and executing the tasks of their respective committees. You all are fantastic! Following the festival every year, we have our annual BOARD ELECTIONS. I appreciate all who took the time to come and vote for their chosen candidates. We had an exceptional pool of applicants, but only a few can come out victorious. Ron Swehla, the incumbent, was elected as Secretary. The newly elected musician members are: incumbent Paula Dula, Jay Paulus, and Gary Reynolds. Non-musician members are incumbent Yvonne Au, and Carol Fusaro. Welcome to all new board members; thank you for volunteering to serve. For the last few months, we have asked for volunteers to assist with both society and festival-related projects in the office. I am disappointed to say that no one has offered to assist us with these projects. So again we ask for volunteers that are willing to devote a little of their time on the weekends or evenings. We would love to hear from you. Thanks! 2 July 2011 Newly elected STJS Board Members Also, incumbent RON SWEHLA was re-elected as Secretary YVONNE AU CAROL FUSARO PAULA DULA JAY PAULUS GARY REYNOLDS STJS Election Results Erin Davis and Jeanette Norman Thank you to all who came out to vote on June 12! There were close to 285 ballots cast. Congratulations to our newly elected candidates, shown above. Also, special thanks to these dedicated volunteers who helped with set up and run the STJS Election at Jazz Sunday: Mary Stewart, Chair; Felix and Beth Smith, Joy Skalbeck, Jeanette Norman, Sue Lear, Eric and Erin Davis, Kurt & Alicia Fullbright, Carol Cross, Beth Scott (distribution of ballots). We’d also like to thank all candidates who were willing to donate their time even if they did not get the call this time around. We bid a grateful and appreciative farewell to board members who completed their terms: Beth Duncan and Vivian Lee. CATEGORIES: 1 – Kids 2 – Anyone 3 – Womens (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large) 4 – Mens (Small or Medium) July 2011 The Professors (cont.) Ed Metz, Jr. is simply the world’s best drummer, in any style, and his Dixieland playing is not to be believed! Ed toured with Count Basie when he was in his early twenties (Ed, not Basie), and is in constant demand, worldwide, as a stellar performer and recording artist. He has worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis, Jr., Rosemary Clooney and dozens of music legends. The president of NagelHeyer Records summed him up perfectly: “A most versatile man with great ears, impeccable timing and immense drive, who swings like mad.” “Fast Eddie” Erickson has no peer on banjo and guitar, and is lovably hilarious. Eddie is the peripatetic, globetrotting master of international jazz and fun, and spends about half of his time in the company of other great international jazz stars all over the world. In 1969, Eddie met Bill Dendle when they played together at Capone’s Warehouse on Cannery Row in Monterey. Bill & Eddie are a mainstay of the Sacramento Jazz Fest. & Jubilee where they pack the Paddlewheel Saloon every night during the festival. Eddie has worked with Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Dan Barrett, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, Jackie Coon, Rick Fay, and all of today’s jazz greats. Trumpeter Rusty Stiers was a child-star of Dixieland jazz as leader of Oregon’s (later Disneyland’s) Jazz Minors, and is currently still appearing at Disneyland. He’s found his way into management in the Entertainment Department, and supervises some 50-odd musicians (some odder than others). Bill Dendle’s trombone and banjo have been heard at DisneyWorld and Disneyland, on USO tours, as leader of the now defunct South Market Street Jazz Band, and even once in Germany. Bill directs both of the STJS Trad. Jazz Camps—youth and adult—as well as the Mammoth Lakes Youth Jazz Camp. He’s also one of the best M.C.s in the business, with a witty style that has been compared (unfavorably) to Steve Allen’s. Anita Thomas has been heard with The Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals, and most of Hal Smith’s groups, as well as with L.A. big bands, and many fine bands in Australia. Anita plays all of the woodwinds/reeds, the trombone, the didgeri- July 2011 doo, and sings like an Australian lark. She teaches jazz at a community college in Maryland. Jason Wanner is a young jazz piano genius, featured at festivals across the country with the Blue Street Jazz Band and Blue Renditions. He is also a featured pianist at the San Diego Jazz Party in 2011 and again in 2012. Jason was honored as the 2010 Guest Clinican at our Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival, and the Dixieland Monterey festival named him their 2011 Musician of the Year. Jason is the first former camper to join the faculty of the Jazz Camp. We waited until he was 18 before we promoted him, but he was ready at about age 14. Tuba/bassist Lee “Westy” Westenhofer is not only the most adroit tubist you’ve ever heard, he’s also screamingly funny. Westy’s roots go back to Disneyland, Banjomania, the Rhythm Brothers, the Reynolds Brothers, and many fine L.A. bands. A native of Detroit, Westy’s formal music education was on the euphonium, but his innate sense of silliness prevented him from pursuing a classical career—thank goodness! Shelley Burns adds world-class jazz vocals and Carol Burnett-ish comedy to The Professors package. Shelley is a Sacramento native who began her career with three of her sisters in a group cleverly called “The Burns Sisters.” Featured for years with the best musicians in our area, Shelley has led her group, Avalon Swing, at many festivals, and stars with Bill & Eddie in their comedy/music trio. Shelley, Bill & Eddie are making their cruise debut this coming Christmas/New Year’s for Jazzdagen Tours, cruising to Hawaii for fifteen lively, funfilled, overeating days. The band is called “The Professors” for two reasons: first, all the members teach at the Jazz Camps; and second, “Professor” is a vintage title of respect for one who is an acknowledged and respected expert on his/her instrument. All of these musicians deserve that title, and live up to it in performance and in teaching. Despite spending two weeks at a time together in close quarters at Jazz Camp, there has never been a cross word, a conflict, a controversy, an argument, a disagreement or a disagreeable thought in this band. The mutual respect, and enjoyment that suffuses the band is obvious to an audience, and a good time is always had by all. 2 Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums Blue Street with Bria Skönberg Carmen Getit Tom Rigney Phil Crumley Natural Gas JB Kim Cusack Bob Schulz Reedley River Rats Bob Ringwald Zydekats Sankofa 101st Army Swing Dance Contest Finals St. Louis Rivermen Red Lehr Scott Kaufman Swing Dance Contest Finals July 2011 California Honeydrops The Black Dogs Tom Hook Bill & Eddie Danny Coots Bob Draga The Tin Men Matt Perrine Jennifer Leitham Vince Bartels See more photos on page 3 PHOTOS BY NANCY GIFFIN Tom Hook July 2011 Dante Club Notes By “The Cricket” [who is NOT the AATJ editor] W hat is it with STJS and clarinet players? Seems we turn out en masse at the merest mention of a reed man. Case in point: guest Pieter Meijers triumphed over the area’s first nice weather to draw an enthusiastic house for June Jazz Sunday. He surprised no one but pleased everyone by playing great, great, great! Started by saying Bob Ringwald told him he wasn’t being hired to talk. (Bob must have a script—not the first time we’ve heard that line.) Nonetheless, his repartee was almost as good as his music. His backup bands included John Cocuzzi, Renard Perry, Jim Maihack, Bob Ringwald, Greg Sabin, Lenny Pollacchi, Gene Copelan, Chuck Bond, Brandon Au, Stan Jarmolowicz and Joey Ventittelli. (See page 13 for set details.) OH! EXCUSE ME! That would be EMPEROR Bob Ringwald! Bob follows 2011 Emperor Tom Rigney’s beneficent reign. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget us little people. Pieter pointed out that he knew most of his sidemen, but the one he had known the longest was the youngest; Brandon Au started sitting-in with High Sierra when he was only about twelve, courtesy of his Uncle Howard Miyata. One sideman Pieter hadn’t met before was Stan Jarmolowicz—they capitalized on their joint “foreign origins” by playing a Poland/Holland duet, to everyone’s delight. June 12 PIETER MEIJERS Dancers enjoying music on the Main Stage Main Stage Set 1 was Celia Cottle’s Crazy Eights from Davis. Evan Hamaguchi plays clarinet, tenor and bari sax while also fronting the band. Andrew Stephens and Sam Theg are on trumpets. Bryce Korte is on alto, and Scott Yamamoto is on tenor sax and vocals—including a little scat! Dana Natov (piano), Emma Maul (bass) and Drew Thomsen (drums) make up the rhythm section. Cindy Korte is the Band Manager. If you weren’t there, you probably won’t credit my assertion that these 14-16 year olds are very, very close to professional grade. I heard Lenny Pollachi congratulating Celia on their skill and polish. Their last number was a barnburner on an “Amazing Grace/Saints” medley, and then they went and tore it up for Tailgate Set 2. Gold Card Room and Tailgate had a good roster for the day. Jared Blum got a workout. Pat Blucher and Jan Buhlert were on GCR Set 2 together, about the only way I can seem to keep their names straight, given that their names are the only things similar about them—oh, and being good musicians, of course! John Hearnley hasn’t been here since November, so it was nice to see him back. And is Isaac Smith new? Never had a chance to ask since he played 4 sets in the Tailgate. Also didn’t have a chance to confab with horn player Louis Trovato. Both good players, hope to see them again. Details to follow. We see Richard Leupp about once in a blue moon, which I believe this was not, but there he was anyway. Jim Maihack was called in as a sideman for our guest artist, but (homeboy that he is) he also made his way into the GCR for a set. Pieter Meijers, Chuck Bond, Brandon Au John Cocuzzi and Pieter Meijers STJS Pres. Tom Duff Felipe & Randy Joe Walton Standing ovation for Pieter Meijers July 2011 Raphael Lopez appeared out of nowhere to play a fine guitar in the Tailgate, and Carl Van Dam is a new-to-us clarinet player. They were on TG Set 1, along with Rich O’Day and either Larry Salerno or Greg Ayala or both on drums. That reminds me...there was a slight slip-up in Tailgate musicians recordkeeping by subs while Jane Reinmuth was cruising away. What looks like the picture caption on page 13 of last month’s paper was NOT intended to mean that we don’t know Dave Sieber and Jared Blum’s names (although the drummer and trumpeter in the photo were not identified)—it meant that the list of all the musicians signing in for May wasn’t available at press time. That isn’t a complaint; the alternate Tailgate Tsars are very much appreciated—YOU try to do that job! And don’t worry, guys/gals, the list has been located and your participation noted for 2012 Jubilee badges. Larry Salerno, by the way, was part of Paula’s change-up in the GCR; he and Scotty Harper joined Charlie Hull and Ken Meyers as the Vocal Set backup band. Terrific line-up. Always a surprise or two. Larry Sikorski had a particularly fine cheering section: his friend/doctor of almost 30 years, Dr. Lou Orlando, brought his daughter, Lisa Orlando; two nurses, Samantha Hand and Brittney Flynn; and Tony Aiello, cousin of actor Danny. Larry did them proud! Speaking of Jubilee—so much goes on that it would take a whole paper to tell all the good bits, so I don’t even try, but I did want to give a shout out to Jerry Mayfield, 80 years old Jimmy Spero and loving it. Jerry, along with then-wife Bev, was here for the very first planning meeting for the very first Jubilee—not a large number of us left. If you have a chance, ask him about riding around town in the back of an 18-wheeler with Tom Dawson at the wheel, hitting all the hot spots (Capone’s Chicago Tea Room and Original Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, for two). What a hoot! Former Navy Band drummer and current STJS Drum Tsar Dan Lobay was stationed in Hawaii twice back in the 70s. Thanks to Facebook, he has reconnected with some of his former bandmates, and one of them provided an official band photo—quite the hunky guy! Caught Bob Schleh just as he was headed out, accompanied by his granddaughter, Samantha Martinez. She just turned sophomore at the Performing and Fine Arts Academy in Natomas where she is a guitar student. Her boyfriend, Aldon Baker, is from Seattle (knows Demetrios’ Jazz Alley well) but is now a jazz guitar and composition student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Honored to have you visit. Bernie Davitto asked me to say hi to Patti Jones. It wasn’t until later that Vicki Bezzone told me Bernie’s wife, Amy Dean, died on May 7. We’re very sorry to hear that, but glad to see Bernie here. And I didn’t know until the May AATJ that Marcella Crow had died. She was a staunch supporter of her husband, horn player Bill. Our sympathies to both families. Patti Schneider told me that Shirley Hofheinz was in the Emergency Room on Saturday, but there she (cont. on pg. 11) Pieter Meijers and Brandon Au, voc. Gene wanted to make them available so that any musician who was looking for a particular piece of sheet music could maybe find it in his collection. He has some real gems: a lot of old chestnuts and some real esoterica. 2011 ADULT TRAD. JAZZ CAMP 2011 YOUTH TRAD. JAZZ CAMP CONCERT CONCERT Fri., Aug. 5 7–10 pm Sly Park Ed. Ctr. (They’re the tall and the short of it on the dance floor.) Shirley and Marty are members of San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society, too. Patti and her husband, Mike, attend Modesto, Stockton AND Sacramento jazz clubs. Did I mention that Set 3 on the Main Stage was a Jimmy Spero-led session with John Cocuzzi, Chuck Bond, Gary Reynolds, Lenny Pollacchi and Joey Ventittelli? Charlie Gehlbach put together a group NOT named Dr. Bach for Set 5; he called them Charlie’s Volunteers, and they were Gene Mondro, Larry Tyrell, Pat Blucher, Don Schumaker, Dave Sieber and Carl Warmdahl. Both groups pulled a lot of dancers out on the floor. And yes, sorry, we have let the sound mixing board encroach a bit—we’ll back it up a little next month. Ro Mefford was wearing a Riverfront Refuge t-shirt. She and Meff missed Jubilee 1 and 2 but have been to every one since, and always renew their membership at Riverfront—brilliant reminder device. (Meff says he been chasing Ro for 60 years! Tee hee.) And Paul and Timmie said they’ve been members for one month, but they’ve been going to Jubilee for 6 years, so they “recognize most of these people.” Their granddaughter, Jaimie Gilbert, is a drum student at Paradise High School. Pat Raney said it’s been a couple of years since the last visit; next time, maybe with the guitar, yes? Jean Weathers’ daughter, Kellie Kirkman, brought Jean’s great-granddaughter, Rhianon Fritze. And Azaria McCauley was helping grandma Mabel Burhans at the recordings table between taking diligent care of her dollbaby. Pieter Meijers ended his second set by mentioning that High Sierra was just back from a tour that ended with a concert in Tokyo. He said there were many (maybe all) in the audience still affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Subdued at first, they were a stomping, cheering clapping mass at the end. Pieter suggested that, if our friends are having trouble with this-or-that regime or disaster around the world, we should call up a Cold War staple and send JAZZ AMBASSADORS. It could work wonders! Don’t forget Cline Wine & Dixieland Jazz Fest is coming up on Sat., July 16. As far as I can see, it is the foodie’s jazz festival (although they don’t have barbequed oysters). Be back in town on Sun., July 17 for “Jazz in the Park” from 5:30pm–7:30pm, featuring Miss Margie & the Hot Five (incl. John Cocuzzi, Reggy Marks, Jimmy Spero, Joey V, and Lenny Pollacchi). Head south to Costa Mesa’s Orange Co. Classic Jazz Fest., Aug. 4-7. Snack Sovereign Beth Scott recruited Denise Kenner to help serve those cheesy nachos this month. BIG surprise for July 10 Jazz Sunday (if she can get clearance from the powers that be). So now you have to be there to find out, right? That, plus all those parading bands—all 15!—how can you resist? 2 July 2011 Raffle Cent$ by Kathy Becker STJS RAFFLE COORDINATOR W ell, we had another fabulous Jazz Sunday at the Dante.
